Macbook Pro – Some Keys Not Working!

Hi
I'm running a 15-inch ( mid 2010 ) Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8.5.
Some of my keys have stopped working.
I've been throughout his forum but found nothing that helps.
The 't' key sometimes does nothing and sometimes this... IORTUY
other keys that dont work are: number 5, hypens, square brackets and volume up.
Random I know.
Anyone experienced this?
Thanks
B

I'm on a MacBookPro8,2,
Intel Core i7 2.3 GHz
Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B27
SMC Version (system):          1.69f4
OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
I have the same issue with some of my keys, it comes and goes, but it's mostly there.
I have to carry a small Bluetooth keyboard with me now, this really *****.
I'm paranoid thinking this might have something to do with a keylogger process, or maybe just some process in the system that keeps taking all the IO bandwidth for the keyboard, I don't think it's hardware related
I've installed an antivirus and performed an exhaustive scan and found nothing wrong.
When I started typing this post I had to go and get the external keyboard, now I'm typing back again with the keyboard, no clue what might be causing it.

  • 2007 MacBook Pro ctrl key not working

    Hi all,
I have used various iterations of bootcamp with my 2007 macbook pro without problem. I have also sucessfully installed Windows 7 64-bit using bootcamp and got it working almost perfectly (sound, video, magic mouse) despite it not officially being supported by the version of bootcamp that came with Snow Leopard.
My only problem now is that the control lkey isn't working. I've tried various keymappers to map it to another key (generally the Apple key) to no avail. And when I say it isn't working, I mean it's not working at all. Key mappers don't recognise when I tap it, I can't Ctrl-C to copy or Ctrl-anything to anything.
I have installed the Apple keyboard driver and everything else works perfectly, including the F-keys, Fn, alt and the Apple key (which opens the start menu). Any suggestions for how I could fix this would be greatfully received.
    Thanks,
    Alexis

Sadly it turns out that it's not working in OS X either. I had convinced myself it was a software issue but it is apparently hardware. Shows how seldom the control key's used in OS X doesn't it.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might have a bash at fixing it, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Alexis

  • New Macbook Pro number keys not working

    Hi everyone,
I have a brand new macbook pro (running 10.6.4) who's number keys suddenly stopped working. The keys from 1 through 9 do not respond at all. Neither does holding down shift, while pressing them. The key rows below and above them work fine. I have the newest updates on the machine, and have restarted multiple times.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

This same issue happens to me frequently. I've lived with it for the most part just because I didn't want to spend my time running down Apple's glitch. I can not tell if it is a hardware, firmware, or software issue. I have a case number which is 163792369 that I've had since June. I've never taken it in because it is not consistent. I'm leaning towards an OS glitch. I have searched Apple's archives and found one reference to it happening on an earlier version of OS-X, but I was afraid to install the patch because of version differences. Please let me know if you get a solution from the customer support. It is somewhat frustrating as this is my first experience with a Mac and I understand it's a complex piece of machinery from a hardware and software perspective, but fresh out of the box the freak'in keys should work.
    Thanks,

It just works??? Most of the time.

  • Macbook Pro keyboard keys not working

I am honestly so fed up. For the past three days keys have not been working. It started with the question mark and slash button now it's the command, six button, equal sign, and I'm typing in the dark because the key that increases the keyboard light is not working. Soon enough the backlight key will stop working and I'll be in the dark. I've read a couple forums and have tried every single troubleshooting that they've suggested and nothing seems to work. I also can't take it in anytime this weekend due to work. Anything I can possibly do (question mark). Also, trying to fix the question mark button I seemed to have ripped off the key and now it won't go back into place. my question is will apple replace this for free. Thank you. Also, I seemed to notice that the problems started occuring after I bought one of those keyboard covers. Pretty sure that has something to do with it. Since I'll probably have to go in on monday is there anyway I can change some keys so that for example, when I press shift and another button i'll get a question mark. Thank you.

The easiest thing to do might be to get an external keyboard for the moment. As for replacing the key for free, you might get them to do it. If it's just a matter of getting the keycap back on, they probably will. If you broke it off and damaged the keyboad circuitboard, the whole keyboard assembly may need replacement.
Have you tried resetting the SMC and PRAM?

You haven't identified the version so I can't tell if offering you contact options for Adobe Support will be of use to you.  But they will likely be your only hope of getting resolution unless you just happen to be using the wrong number as the serial number.

  • Keyboard: some keys not working

Some keys not working.  Need help/suggestions.  Not great with computers so PLEASE give details/steps re: how to do what you suggest - thanks!
Details: intel based iMac running snow leopard 10.6.8.  Apple wireless/bluetooth keyboard (came with the iMac).
Some keys suddenly stopped working:  space, tab, capLock, option key to the right of space bar (one on the left works), down arrow
The problem happens in various programs (safari, pages, etc)
The keyboard is fine on another iMac
A different keyboard is fine on this/the involved iMac
(nutshell: keyboard works fine - computer works fine, unless they're together)
    Here's what's been tried/checked:
-checked the settings for universal access ("mouse keys" are off) and checked for any bluetooth keyboard shortcuts.
-in system preferences "speech" is not set for "speak selected text when the key is pressed" - this is not checked/selected
-tried creating a new user but had the same issue so it's computer-wide rather than just a user account
-removed the keyboard and reconnected (using the +/- signs and "disconnect" and putting in a new code of numbers to pair keyboard)
    -language/text is set for english
-did the keyboard viewer and the keys in question did NOT highlight when pressed (but don't forget the entire keyboard is fine on a different computer so thekeys aren't the issue)
-"slow keys" is turned off re: keyboard in system preferences.
Any help is welcomed.  It's frustrating knowing the keyboard works, just not with this computer.  Please help.  Many thanks!

yes - not sure how this works...if you can see my original post there are a lot of details in there.  If you can't...
nutshell: the keyboard works on a different iMac
a different keyboard works on this/the involved iMac
I tried to create a different user and the keyboard still does not work so it is computer-wide
I also removed the keyboard from the computer (using the +/- symbols and disconnecting and then repairing it.  The problem remained
Thanks for any help.  It's crazy that the keyboard is fine and the computer is fine but together, there's the problem.
    Thank you!!!

  • Apple Keyboard used on MacBook: Some keys not working

    Hello,
I use an Apple Keyboard (USB-connection, aluminium, Model No.: A1243, 2007) for typing longer texts when my MacBook is connected to an external monitor.
Since I have re-installed the OS X software on my MacBook because I had to replace the hard drive, the Keyboard doesn't work successful. Some keys just don't work; The letters cannot be typed. (Affected keys: "8", "I", "K", "," and number pad keys "7", "4", "1")
I installed all software updates for keyboards that could be found on the apple support webpages.
The keyboard istelf doesn't show any defects for me.
What can I do to solve the provlem? Or to get to know if it's a software-based problem? I want to exclude all possible software reasons.. In a worst case I have to replace the keyboard, I think. But it always worked fine and a new one can be expensive.
    Thank you for all hints!

have you tried command-option and the keys? or command and one of the keys? if so did it work??? if not, try going into the finder, and go to preferences file, but did not know which one would be the culprit. The strategy I adopted, which took me back to my System 9 (and earlier) days, was to go into the Library folder of the affected user account, open up the Preferences folder (after backing it up elsewhere on the hard drive), and take out a small number of files (.plist files, etc) at a time, log out then back in and note any changes. The theory is that if there were any changes then it is most likely that the offending file was in the last group to be removed. You would then replace those files one at a time until the problem returned. Eventually I found the culprit. To my surprise it was the com.apple.loginwindow.plist file. Removing that cured things completely.
Why that particular preference file affected that particular key is beyond me, but it fixed the problem!

  • There are 6 keys in my MacBook Pro that are not working, how can I fix them?

I am experiencing issues with 6 keys (6, y, h, n, =, /) on my very old MacBook Pro, when I boot up my laptop these keys just dont work anymore.
But when I used the keyboard viewer it works, can anybody help me or guide me on how I can resolve my problem?
    Big thanks!

    Hey PurplejinG,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the keyboard keys are not working correctly. I would recommend that you follow these articles, they may be able to help you resolve or isolate this issue.

    Hi
Why do you think that the motherboard is ok?
Maybe its a keyboard controller issue
Did you check if the cable was connected properly?
In my opinion if you are 100% sure that the keyboard is ok then the issue must be related to the motherboard because there is no other part which is placed between the keyboard and mobo.
    Bye

  • Some of macbook pros display lights not working???

i recently went to beijing with my macbook pro, by air. After i came back to shanghai i went to open my macbook pro once i got home from the airport. Something weird happened, when i opened the macbook pro the display had long black lines going vertically about 6 1 cm thick lines. it kinda looked like a stripped pattern.... once i shut it down and waited for about 2 minutes until i turned it on the lines were gone. ( i think the lines were because the back light did not light up) I was wondering if anybody else had this problem and if it had something to do with riding on the plane with me. this only happened once (today) and I think it was something to do with the plane. thins was the first trip on a plane with the macbook pro so i don't know if that was the problem. please reply

Yep, I have this same problem. Looks like a few other people on the forum do, too. For me, though, it's not a random thing ... my screen is always "striped." I've never dropped it or anything. Here's a photo of what the screen looks like:

My guess is that this is relatively easy for Apple to fix. Take your computer into an Apple store or ship it in for a repair. That's what I'm going to do, anyway.

  • Macbook pros to TV not working

I've been connecting my two Macbook pros (2008 & 2011 both on OSX) to a Sony Bravia TV for ages using a HDMI cable connected to a HDMI adaptor to Minidisplay.  For some reason now the connection doesn't work.  I've tried both computers, different HDMI cables, different adaptors, different ports on the TV (and entertainment center), and nothing works.  When connected directly to the TV the screen remains blank, the laptop will flicker when the cable is first connected but then nothing.  The laptops don't recognize the second screen at all.  I've tried resetting the PRAM, unplugging and plugging, turning everything off and on, and restarting the laptop.  Nothing has worked so far.

If your Mac is capable, look in System Preferences > Sound > ouput tab and select the TV or hold the Option key down and click on the Volume icon on the menubar to accomplish the same.
Here are the models that pass sound over HDMI and those that don't.
These Apple computers supply multichannel audio (up to 8 channels) and video signals over Mini DisplayPort:
    iMac (Late 2009) and later
Mac mini (Mid 2010) and later1

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) and later

1No additional adapter is necessary if you are connecting directly to the HDMI port on your Mac mini (Mid 2010) and later or your MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012).
