MacBook Pro speaker volume

I just finished importing a ton of CDs to my laptop and now I find I cannot get the internal speaker volume up past a whisper.  Any thoughts?  This is barely audible yet is working fine on an external output device via Bluetooth.  And, for those of you who say reset PRAM or buy external speakers, this problem never existed until I recently began importing my music library.  I'm sure it's just a setting but I don't know where to begin and definitely do not want to re-import 1000's of songs at a new volume.  Please help.  Thanks.

Hello there, Donna.
There are a few places where sound can be adjusted on your Mac. If you're in the iTunes application, the following link from the online iTunes Help Guide provides some standard information:
Adjust the volume - iTunes Help
Adjust the volume of music and video
Change the volume for all songs (like turning the volume knob on a stereo): Use the volume slider at the top of the iTunes window.
The maximum volume is limited by your computer’s volume setting.
Adjust the volume of a particular song or video: Select it, choose File > Get Info, click Options, and drag the volume slider. iTunes uses this setting each time the song or video plays.
Have all songs and videos always play at the same volume level: Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Playback, and select Sound Check.
If you’re using remote speakers connected to an AirPort Express: You can use the volume controls on the speakers as well as the iTunes volume controls. To use only the speaker’s controls, click the AirPlay button , click Single, and choose the speakers from the pop-up menu.
SEE ALSOChoose which speakers to use
Additionally the Mac OS Help Guide provides this information:
Turn the volume up or down - Mac Help
Turn the volume up or down
To change your computer’s volume, click the Volume control in the menu bar, then drag the slider to adjust the volume. If the Volume control isn’t in the menu bar, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Sound. Click Output, then select the “Show volume in menu bar” checkbox.

  • Every time I plug in my headphones into my Macbook Pro, my volume control buttons don't work.

Every time I plug in my headphones into my Macbook Pro, my volume control buttons don't work. Even after I unplug my headphones they don't work, they get stuck on the level of volume it was at when I plugged in the headphones. I can control the volume if I go to system preferences and do it that way, but that is such a pain. Also, in order to get the buttons to work again I have to completely restart my computer which is also a pain! What should I do, or can do, to fix the problem?

  • MacBook Pro speaker scratchy and warbley sounding

My MacBook Pro speaker has gotten all scratchy and warbley sounding. Have they "blown"? Is this covered in my 1-yr warranty? How is it likely to be resolved?

If it is  hardware defect it is covered under 1 year warranty.
If you wish to do some troubleshooting, do the following steps.
    1. Reset PRAM. Some sound settings are stored in PRAM.
       http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh26871.html
    2. Reset SMC.
Choose the method for: "Portable computer that have a battery you should not remove on your own"

If these steps do not help, MBP should be taken in for service

  • On my macbook pro the volume sounds like its only coming from one speaker?

  • How can I pass Line-In sound input directly through the MacBook Pro Speaker

Why I need to do that:
In a chalet with a lot of friends. We were hoping the chalet we are renting would have a stereo system we could connect our iPods to. Unfortunately, there aren't any and the only speaker we have are those of my MacBook Pro.
Most iPods around have been formatted for Windows so I can not download the song on my computer so the only option is to plug the line in cable from the i-pod to the computer.
However, I can not find any way to get the audio to play live via the speaker. (Actually, I have using Parallel and my Win XP image - so I know the sound card supports it - but the output volume is very weak and I think it would be better if it did not go through the VM).
I tried using Garage Band, but no luck so far. Someone has any idea?

You can simply hook up a Windows iPod to your MBP with a regular iPod USB cable, elguillermo, and play the music directly from it through iTunes. No need to use the Line-in. Macs are capable of connecting to, playing from, and even synching with, Windows formatted iPods, without the need for anything more than the regular iPod cable.
As others have said, you can also use the very handy little utility "Line-In" from Rogue Amoeba (who also make the very useful AudioHijack Pro - which can achieve the same thing and much more too but isn't free) if you wish to enable speaker play-through from the line-in port, but you will then have to control your choices using the iPod screen. It is much easier using iTunes bigger screen on the MBP, I reckon

  • Retina Macbook Pro Speaker Distortion

I bought a Macbook Pro with Retina Display back in 2012 and recently I have had problems with the left speaker. The sound produced by the left speaker sounds very distorted (that awful buzzing noise you hear from old speakers when the volume is turned up high). The thing is, my machine has outlived it's warranty and I don't want to spend money on another machine, so I'm hoping to god that it isn't a hardware problem. I'm willing to pay a little to get the speakers replaced. I'm reluctant to upgrade it because to my knowledge, this is the last remaining model of the retina macbook pro line that accommodates an SSD upgrade. Have anyone had this issue and solved it? If not then how much does it usually cost for the speakers to be replaced?

Go to the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites for parts, prices and instructions.  It may be a good idea to have the MBP checked at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free and you may find that the  replacement cost may be modest.

  • MacBook Pro speaker rattle

    Hey guys.
My MacBook Pro is about 13 months old now, and just recently i have noticed rattling in the right speaker. This mainly happens on high pitched sounds like a piano being played in a song.
My MacBook Pro is the early 2011 model.
I'm now out of warranty so was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences or advice?
    Thanks in advance
    Jack

I have had similair issues. I solved mine by messing with the audio output settings. You can try going to System Preferences>Sound>Output and adjusting the balance and output volume.

  • Macbook Pro 15" volume level changes by itself

    Hi all!
About a month ago I have upgraded my rock-solid Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2012) from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. All seemed fine (with the exception of some known annoyances with WIFI) until last week when all of a sudden the volume level started to change by itself. It started going up and down, turning mute and turning on again and so on, just like an invisible hand or a remote access have taken control of my machine (it wouldn't even let me change the the volume using the volume buttons while this weirdness is happening). This has never happened before. To make things worse, I have then upgraded to Yosemite and all seemed fine but then the weird volume changes appeared again and I now am stuck with no straight forward way of reverting all the way back to the original Lion (which worked perfectly since Mac purchase back in 2012).
    Can anyone help?
I have googled for similar issues and have seen  some answers (mostly not that relevant) including a thread on this forum suggesting to reset the SMC. I have tried that using the suggested key-combination press, but it did not seam to have solved the problem, as the volime changes continue when I least expect it.
Is this a hardware problem? If so, would a change of the keyboard resolve things?   [ At some stage I thought maybe the problem was caused by the fact the I have fiddled a little bit with the keyboard by lifting the :; key (next to L and under P) and applying a bit of WD40 to clean a tiny spil of sugary liqid that caused the key to get sticky.  But the volume keys are way far on top of keybord so my assumtion was/is that the volume changes would not be related to the cleaning. ]
is this a software problem? Some thread on similar (not identical) issues had suggested there are some bugs in soft and Apple is aware. For this reason I gave Yosemite a go but the problem continues. Would reverting to Lion sole the problem you think?  [ Maybe I should ask here if anyone can suggest how to go about this downgrade as Option-Cmd-R key-combination press at start up does not give me the Interner Recovery scree anymore, but keeps taking me (just like Cmd-R) straight to the OSX Utilities where can wipe of the disk (which I did) and reinstall Yosemite only. ]
I would very much apreciate any replies that might help me solve this issue.
    Many thanks
    Ty

  • MacBook Pro Touchpad/Volume problem

Hello all, I've just upgraded to a MacBook Pro and Logic Pro 9 and I'm having some problems with track volumes changing when I swipe the touchpad accidentally. Does anyone know how to turn that function off?
    Thanks in advance!

Hey, thanks for the interest Jazzhead! I'll try and explain it a bit better here. So when I'm in the normal arrange view, you know how there are two channel strips along the left hand side? The track you have selected, plus the output track. Well when I'm trying to move my cursor around or zoom in/out using the trackpad in the arrange portion of the screen, sometimes what I'm doing with my fingers changes the volume on those channel strips. If I have a full mixer up, it will effect some of those channel volumes all though that is less of a problem. It's just really annoying when you go and zoom out of the session using the track pad, and you accidentally put the 1/2 Output to +6dB and not even realize it.
    Thanks again,
    Cam

  • Macbook Pro - speaker socket only outputting left audio

I have recently noticed that my MacBook Pro is only outputting audio to my left sided speaker. The following are the steps I have already taken to troubleshoot:
Plugged my iPod into the speakers and both (left and right) speakers work perfectly
Plugged two separate sets of headphones into the speaker socket on my MacBook and on both occasions I am only getting audio out of the left headphone
Checked the output sound settings (System Preferences>Sound>Output) and the balance slider is set to the central position.
The MacBook Pro is around 4 years old and operates of OS X 10.8.2.
Any further trouble shooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    James

Playing games will usually cause the computer to get very hot, and the longer you play the hotter it gets. To deal with this the fans ramp up eventually having to run at full speed to try and cool the computer. If the computer is not adequately ventilated and/or is used in a hot environment, then there's a potential for a thermal shutdown.
Obviously, heat is not in the best interest of your speakers.

  • MacBook Pro Speaker/Subwoofer

So I heard that the MacBook Pro has 4 speakers and a subwoofer. Does anyone know what the wattage of the subwoofer is? I have the new 15in MacBook Pro Aluminum.

To say the MBP has a "subwoofer" is to laugh. No sound comes from an MBP that anyone who has heard a subwoofer would ever associate with one. The speaker system is OK for listening to Skype phone calls or audiobooks, but there is no bass response worth mentioning. To expect any from a machine like the MBP (or any notebook, for that matter) is just unreasonable.

  • Apple TV messed up Macbook Pro, Keyboard volume controls won't work.

I can't get my Keyboard Volume controls to work on my macbook pro, Apple TV messed it up. This isn't an issue with disabling the remote control infrared receiver. When I want to turn my volume up or down, I have to go to system prefrences and change the volume that way. It's annoying and a big waste of time. Please help me before I throw this computer against the wall.
    Thank You!!

I've got an extremely similar problem. Spillage on the keyboard. Unknown, what it was.
To start with it was dead, no power up.
Then it dried out. There was still a bit of battery power left, and the mouse and track pad worked for a few minutes then it all froze.
So I shut the lid. I left it like that, because I couldnt switch it off.
Much later, opened it up again and all windows opened up, all info was correct,
I was advised to try wireless mouse and keyboard, but you have to get in there before it freezes again.
The battery was charging normally as well.
I made the decision to let the battery die completely and then switch it on again, but sure enough when I did this, it ignored any re-boot command and that's that. Dead as a do-do.
So, without being a computer whizz kid, I presume, it's off to the Apple store for a sizeable bill.
Unless someone else has a cunning plan ????????
I would love to hear it !!!!!!

  • Macbook Pro 15inch Volume, brightness keys not working (All the special F keys)

    Hello,
I have this problem on my MBP where my Fn (Function Keys) on the top row of my keyboard don't work properly. I use these keys all the time to adjust brightness, keyboard LED brightness, pause, play and volume but they aren't working anymore. When I press F12 it shows the dashboard. I already have the 'Use all F1, F2 ect. keys as standard function keys' unchecked in System preferences, Keyboard. I am on a bootcamped MBP but mainly use the Mac OSX. This problem is occuring on Mac OSX not Windows. I have not dropped my MBP to damage it or anything like that. I have installed 16GB Ram and the Seagate Momentus 750GB Hybrid SSD a few months ago. Anyone know how I can fix this?
Any help will be extremly appreciated!
    - Kieran/Paul

Check the setting in Keyboard, Keyboard Tab, that the "Use all F1, F2, ect. keys as standard function keys" isn't checked.

  • My Macbook Pro speaker cannot play

My MBP speaker suddenly have no audio.
There is not built in speaker option for me to select in the audio output selection.
And i also cannot find this file in the my library "com.apple.soundpref.plist"
the audio jack port have also a red light lit up.
But when i am running bootcamp, I do not experience this kind of problem.
the speaker is able to running as normal but the audio jack port still has a red light lit up.
    Can anyone advise me?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Vincent

If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
