MacBook Pro speakers aren't loud enough
Ever since I got my Mid 2009 2.53GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro the speakers haven't been loud. For example if I want to listen to content in iTunes, i somewhat have some difficulty listening. So what I do with all my content on itunes is right-click, get info, options and move the volume adjustment all the way to the right and it helps a little bit. I came from a early 2008 17-inch MacBook Pro so I don't know if its just that i was use to the 17-inch speaker? My older brother recently bought a 13-inch MacBook Pro and i think his speakers are louder then mine. So what do you guys think I should do?
I bought a portable battery-operated (rechargeable) amplified Bluetooth speaker. Beats listening to the internal speakers.

The question says it all. It worked perfectly last night and stopped working this morning. A whole day has gone by and the speakers still don't work. I've plugged in headphones and that works.
When I try to increase volume or decrease volume, it shows me the mute sign which makes no sense at all. When I try to unmute, it stays muted.
HELP I'M ON THE VERGE OF BREAKING THIS P.O.S. LAPTOPSO I just now had the same problem. A million threads online suggested to try inserting headphones, toothpicks, or even qtips to try and switch the "switch" inside the headphone jack. Everyone had great results from using the toothpick method. Well that didn't work for me. here's what FINALLY WORKED!!--> I wrapped a toothpick in fashion tape (fashion tape is basically stretchy double sided tape. If you don't have any ask some girls and someone will have). My thought was that maybe this "switch" didn't need to be flicked or pushed like a button. Maybe it was stuck in like a button that has been pushed in. I used the sticky toothpick to pull up the button/switch. Basically, take the toothpick and pressdown on the switch (supposedly the botton is inside the jack at the 6 or 7-0clock position) and then press the toothpick away (so that you are pushing in the opposite direction [1-oclock]). do this multiple times so you're flicking the toothpick back and forth. Just make sure you press firmly enough in the 6-oclock position so the tape can get stuck to the button.
Two tips for this method:
1) I had tried a manicure q-tip first, which in hindsight could've cleaned out the headphone jack, facilitating a surface that can get stuck to the fashion tape effectively.
2) You can see in the photo attached that I wrapped the tape on the toothpick a little past the edge so that there was extra tape on the end of the toothpick. That was (and this is just my theory) to make up for the fact that toothpicks have a tapered end. I figured that having this extra loose bit of tape at the end would allow me to reacch into any nook or crany of the headphone jack where this mysterious "button" might be lurking. -
Itunes will not play through my MacBook pro speakers, how do i fix this?
So my itunes wont play throught my macbook pro speakers, is there a way to reset the preferences back to default? The speakers work because I can play youtube videos and hear the click when adjusting the volume. Thanks for the help!
First check System Preferences/Sound - check all the settings to make sure mute is not selected.

Dust and debris in the Macbook Pro speakers
I've noticed that there is a small buildup of dust and debris inside the small holes of my Macbook Pro speakers. Can anyone recommend any ways of cleaning this debris out, such as removing the top cover, or using a suction device? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Either blow out the dirt with a can of compressed air (but not too close), or use a small vacuum cleaner designed for computer use (anti static). I wouldn't remove the top cover unless you are certain you'll put it back exactly as it was so as not to void the warranty.

My MacBook Pro speakers are stopped working and on screen volume icon shows in gray colour I am unable to change the volume.
Go step by step and test.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
Highlight Internal Speakers.
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
Try this even if you don’t see the red light.
3. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
Do this twice
4. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the appropriate method.
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
Audio Devices window
Side Bar
Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so,uncheck it.
6. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects
Play sound effects through:
Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device". -
MacBook Pro Speakers have a 'start' click. How can I disable it?
Hello all,
It seems that my MacBook Pro Speakers make a 'start' noise, when they have to 'play' a sound from absolute silence. Why is that? This has become extremely annoying, especially when I get notifications from Adium every now and then. Any workaround on this?
Thank you in advance. It is quit possible that one of your speakers has become defective. A had a similar issue with my previous MB, brought it to the Apple Store and the genius determined that i need to replace one of my speakers and sub.
If you are still covered, i would advise you to get it checked out. -
Macbook pro speakers stopped working, earbuds fine
My macbook pro speakers stopped working, but the earbuds work fine. Tried restart and preferences. Volume icon is grayed out, except when earbuds are plugged in. What am I missing?
Look in the audio output port. If there is a red light, the internal switch is stuck. Insert the earphone jack a few times. Blow into the port as hard as you can. Use a toothpick or something similar and jiggle it inside the port. If no success, bring the MBP to the Apple store genius bar.
Ciao.
If there is no red light, try a PRAM reset:

Does anyone else's MacBook Pro i5 make a loud harddrive disk startup sound?
Whenever I boot up my MacBook Pro, It makes a loud disk startup sound. Does it happen to anyone else?
I would take it in if the start up sound is different than the other Macbooks you've had.
Too few people here seem to have a new i5 yet and if its a big problem you want
it seen by Apple ASAP if it needs a replacement laptop.
thats what I would do. -
MacBook Pro speakers fading in and out
Hi everyone,
I have had my MacBook Pro for less than a year and usually very happy with it. However, in the last week the speakers have been playing up. When I'm watching a show or movie, at unexplained times, the audio will fade out so it sounds really quiet and sort of far away. This has been happening on different players, such as VLC and Quicktime. It also happens with different files, and at random times.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Oddly enough, it seems that playing a song or two on iTunes fixes it (!?). Does anyone have any other solutions? It's incredibly annoying!
Cheers,
Kate
Oh, and the laptop has definitely NOT been around any liquid or anything that could have damaged the speakers, I am very cautious!Hi Kate...

Macbook Pro and Beolab3 random loud popping sound
I'm using Macbook Pro and Bang & Olufsen Beolab3 speakers (powered speakers) connect using headphone output but I hear random loud popping sound. Sometimes so loud that it made me jump. It is definitely not a program generated sound. It is more like some sort of electrical interference. This could happen both while an audio is being played or just on standby. The laptop is less than a month old.
The speakers are fine as I tested with other laptop. Is this normal for this combination? or there actually is a fault with my sound card? I need to know so I can do something about it while it is under warrantee. I was recommend to get a audio DAC. But I need to make sure that it is not a problem with the laptop first.
Thanks. Please help. Any suggestions?Sounds like your Mac is all mucked up. Your recourse is an Apple store or Authorized Apple Service. You can also all AppleCare.

Why is my macbook pro's fan so loud all of a sudden since update 10.9.5?
So usually with my nice macbook pro retina 15 inch, I can play 4k videos with no problem and the fan has always been quiet. Now ever since I downloaded the new update, my fan is so loud! Any ideas? And yes I have enough ram and space left for proper use. Update 10.9.5 *****!
Both watching videos and running Chrome will heat up your machine. As your machine heats up, the fans will run faster to help could down the machine. I've not heard of 10.9.5 making the fans run faster or the temperatures climb, so I have to say that what you're experiencing is PROBABLY normal.
Use the trial version of iStat Menus 5 to monitor your temps and fan speeds. If the machine seems abnormally hot, take it to an Apple Store or an AASP and have the techs look it over.
Good luck,
Clinton

MacBook Pro overheating, fan is loud
I have a MacBook Pro 13", purchased August 2012. It has been overheating. The fan has becoming very loud and it keeps restarting. Also, this pop up keeps appearing, but disappears just as fast as it appears. It doesn't give me enough time to read what it says or copy the screen. Only thing I can tell is that there is a yellow triangle with "!".
This is a copy of my activity monitor.

Macbook Pro speakers fade in and out, speaker to speaker
I have an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, using Mac OX Mountain Lion 10.8.3
The last few weeks I have noticed my speakers fading in and out. It does it in various players an browsers (youtube, blip.tv, quicktime, etc.,.) I tried this solution, but I cannot find that plist file anywhere on my computer, even after showing hidden files! I tried doing a PRAM reset, no dice.
Is that plist file suppose to be missing? How can I that plist file on my computer? If I have to go to the genius bar, will they have to charge me, or make me replace the laptop for a 'new' one because I do not have AppleCare?
I have only had this mac for a couple of months, and I haven't gotten any liquids on it, nor have I dropped it! Please help!Hi Kate...

MacBook Pro speakers not working.
I was using my (mid-2010) MacBook Pro running Lion and then started watching a video and suddenly the internal speakers stopped working. There was no red light coming from the headphones jack. The volume was not muted. I tried plugging headphones in and even that wasn't working. I can adjust the volume but the speakers or headphones don't work. The headphones are working, I'm certain of that.
What should I do?Thanks Dave, but I already figured it out.
I feel like such an idiot for not trying to reboot the computer. *facepalm* -
Macbook Pro speakers not working in OS but work in Bootcamp ?
Had macbook pro for over a year so warranty is expired, i had spilled a drink on the laptop and thought that the speakers were lost for ever. But when i set up bootcamp with windows 8 the speakers now worked perfectly, this means that the speakers do still work and hopefully someone can give me some instructions on how to salvage them and get them working on OS !
Sadly i've tried resetting the Nvram (Pram) and the SMC with no change to the speakers in OS, I would like to still have the speakers functioning in OS even though they work in bootcamp and if anyones got any tips or suggestions, please help !
FrankThere are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
11. Reset the NVRAM.
12. Reset the SMC.
13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in theSound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
