MacBook Pro: SPECTACULAR
I just got this machine delievered to me today. I was debating on selling it off and getting a PC due to CAD programs. Screw CAD, this computer rocks.
It's so wide - at first I thought they sent me the wrong one (17"). It's brutally thin and so stunningly beautiful. My only complaint is that it's so nice that I don't want to touch it and ruin it. Everything works fine and performance is unbelievable. So fast, so quick, but not warp speed faster compared to G4 - like Steve said.
I haven't had a chance to instail anything - heck I'm not even using the battery right now cause I want to properly condition it. My first Mac (after using my buddy's 12" G4 for two weeks) and I know that I can't go back to PC.
Two thumbs wayyyy up, and if you've got one on the way, prepare to be dazzled.
The screen is actually too bright, the computer is too thin and the performance is fast fast fast.

I received mine yesterday, too, and I must agree with the original poster: this machine is incredible. My configuration is:
1.83 GHz Core Duo
2 GB RAM (removed the stock 512 MB stick and added 2 1 GB sticks from OWC)
100 GB 7,200 RPM HD
128 MB VRAM
After I received the machine, my first task was to install the 2 GB RAM I purchased from OWC. There are two memory slots on the bottom of the machine; getting there is not hard, but I found placement of the innermost RAM stick a little difficult. The angle was just hard for me. I felt as though the RAM should go in further, but in reality, it doesn't. I was making it harder than it was.
Once the 2 GB RAM was running, I immediately reinstalled OS X for the purpose of removing the extra Asian fonts, printer drivers, and Garageband sample songs. That saved me about 6 GB.
I then connected the MacBook Pro to my existing Power Mac DP G5 2 GHz, which is about to go on eBay. The Migration Assistant was flawless: approximately 3 hours later, it moved about 77 GB of information to the MacBook Pro. When the process was complete, my MacBook powered on and worked perfectly. It's as if I never left the G5.
My final task yesterday was to calibrate the battery. This, I did overnight.
With my MacBook configured and calibrated, I dedicated significant time to using it today. It's been more than impressive. I don't have the extremely loud hum problem others have. At first, I thought I did, but after listening to some of the sample audio files posted by affected users, I realized my MacBook is nowhere nearly as loud. If you put your ear next to it, you will hear its operating sound, but it is by no means a distraction to me. I can't hear anything when I am in a normal position.
All of the applications are speedy, even Microsoft Office 2004. I could not tell the difference in speed between Word 2004 on my G5 and MacBook. People who have benchmarked things say there is a difference; I honestly can't tell. Word 2004 was always a bit on the slow side for me. Everything else is great.
If you are in the market for a new computer, I really believe this is an amazing choice.

First 4 Days: Life With New MacBook Pro Retina (Business Use)
Wrote a co-worker my early impressions of the new machine a couple of days ago. This is a bit updated. - We are a global organization in 62 countries, so this is written from and for our needs. The co-worker does major video work, but I have no idea what his impression would be.
Not as distinct looking as I thought unless you're looking from the side, but very wellexecuted. It did draw a crowd at the set up table Tues at the Apple Store. Turns out they sold a few they had gotten for display models by accident, so they told me and another guy really lucked out. So far, I think they're right. There's a new Apple Business manager at this store now.
Keyboard seems to have additional rebound in the key stroke, I like it.
Weight loss makes a much bigger difference than I had imagined. Much more comfortable to use and move around. You can easily hold it with one hand by it's corner open.
The screen doesn’t flop anymore! Used to make me nuts. If I used the open 15” MacBook Pro at certain angles, particularly if I was laying back in bed or on a plane reclined, the screen could fall forward some under it’s own weight (or move slightly in turbulence on a plane). Now the retina screen no longer has the glass cover, the hinges function much more stiffly and it holds it’s angle!!
Screen is gorgeous. Did not seem to be such a huge difference at first, but that is because I have been duly spoiled by Apple using the Retina iPad for a while now. When you do get a graphic like a detailed high res photo, and oh my goodness, it is indeed spectacular. Text is like a magazine.
Screen Glare! What happened? I guess when Apple dropped the glass cover on the screen. Anyway, a major issue in certain settings is no longer an issue.
Crazy fast. Loads faster. Once an update is downloaded the install time is spectacular. Sucked up files I was transferring by high capacity thumb drive (USB 2) incredibly quick. Can't wait to use thunderbolt, I ordered a Lacie with two 3 Terra drives I'll run mirrored.
Does not appear to run any warmer than my last generation 15" Mac Book Pro. Perhaps cooler, hard to say this early on. Fan is much quieter.
Seems that Apple's claim of 7 hour battery may be optimistic - not sure. We'll see. This is an issue for us because, for example, the flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg is sixteen hours on Delta, and unless I’m in business class, I can’t recharge. When my laptop goes down, I have to switch to iPad with Bluetooth keyboard. Delta only has wi-fi on U.S. flights as far as I know, even on their regional jets.
Charger chord not attached as firmly, but not a problem either. Bought a second to permanently reside in my office.
Very surprised at the speakers - much improved. I would never compare these new speakers with the Bose Blue Tooth portable; however, it is worth noting that the new speakers in the computer stopped me from buying said Bose speakers as the on-board new ones are enough for the hotel rooms I frequent with my high travel job and I won't be lugging something else around. At home I have even gone to bed with these speakers whereas I used to go through that little black TV box Apple sells to my stereo.
Next machine we buy I'll get the next step up as I need the extra 250 gigs but not the speed. I'm at 62% full with this because I left most of our promotional videos off the machine, and just loaded around 5 key ones.
HDMI worked great in a presentation Wednesday, you have to tell the sound to go to the T.V. speakers via the System preferences. No problems, nice to just take an HDMI chord and no data projector!
My daughter is the most happy - she went from a Vista based laptop to my previous MacBook Pro Tuesday. When I set up her profile, I learned there’s some very cool parental settings available, she’s not as happy about that (set it not to operate between 12a and 6a.Since you mentioned "buisness use" I thought I mention this as thes people usually have security concerns.
1: SSD's/flash are not "scrubbable" like hard drives are.
2: One can't open the MBP-R to remove/replace the SSD for destruction.
3: Best one can do is enable Filevault 2, but the password is required to repair the machine, for Customs and court orders, etc. Of course someone skilled can easily break that password.
The SSD is on a proprietary daughtercard, meaning it could be replaced by Apple, however no mention of a policy or procedure concerning a users private data and if the old SSD is given to the user for destruction or can be accessed via outside enclosure means.
All in all I would assume at this point the SSD is replaceable only if defective.
You will have to be careful who you hand that machine down to later, as there is no way to ensure the data on it is destroyed.
Many people don't realize this, but data on SSD's and in closed devices (iPhones, iPads etc) are accessible with the right technology, even if it's encrypted.

MacBook Pro Enough to Handle Battlefield 2142?
This game is confirmed for the Mac and is coming on Tuesday. Is my MacBook Pro machine enough to handle the game?
Message was edited by: HostFound a listing on the Apple product page. Looks like the graphics card in the MacBook Pro is the minimum requirement for running the game. Since my MBP is my only Intel machine, looks like it will do the job, but I fear not in the most spectacular looking way. I've been a console gamer my whole life, so coming to the computer side of things is a change for me.

Kernel Panic, MacBook Pro, Lightroom 1.0
After being a user of Apple Aperture for the last few months, I just decided to download a trial of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. It's a great product, and I really enjoy its flexibility. However, every time I use it, the program spectacularly crashes in a kernel panic, something I haven't seen since Aperture 1.0.
Here are my specs: I am running a MacBook Pro, 1.83 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB Internal HDD (with 15 GB free). I am importing photos that are stored on an external USB device, a Western Digital 500GB MyBook. I have no problem accessing the photos. They import fine. So far, the program has only crashed while browsing photos or batch applying settings. I've been able to export 500 CR2 files to JPG without incident.
Now, I have not tried working with any libraries on my internal drive quite simply because I do not have enough room on my hard drive to do so. I suspect that the fact I'm using a USB external drive has something to do with the kernel panic. Thing is, I've been doing it this way with Aperture 1.5 for months and I've never had any problems accessing the data and editing it. Certainly no kernel panics, which kind of disturb me.
What gives? Is there a solution, or at least a workaround?Oh, for you tech-heads, I just looked in the panic log, and there are four kernel panics from today. I've tried to keep only what looks like important info here:

MacBook + Dell Vs. MacBook Pro
Greetings everyone,
I would like to know what would be better. Getting a MacBook (2.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, SuperDrive, 100GB HD) and putting a 256 MB Nvidia 7950GT in my Dell XPS (3.2 GHz P4, 1.5 GB RAM, 250GB HD) for $1900 or getting a MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz, 1 GB RAM, SuperDrive, 100GB HD, 256 MB ATI X1600 Pro) for $2300?
As far as what I do with a computer, it's basically a bit of everything. I play some games, do a bit of video editing (just iMovie stuff), some photo stuff, etc. I'm just unsure if adding a video card to a computer with a P4 processor is worth saving $500 or not, or if it will even out perform the MacBook Pro in games.

While the first incarnation (Willamette) was awful, the Northwood CPUs (especially with the 800Mhz bus and DDR400 RAM) were probably one of the best that Intel had released at the time, far outperforming comparable Athlon processors. (which were hotter and more power hungry then their Intel counterparts, and would spectacularly smolder and melt if their cooling solutions failed [unlikely but reflective of a poorly designed response to thermal runaway]) Intel lost that performance crown when AMD introduced the FX line of CPUs, and the Netburst microarchitecture petered out when Intel tried to go to 90nm with their Prescott core. Since then, Intel's CPUs have been relatively lackluster until the debut of the Core line of processors. -

I am in the market to buy a macbook pro. Doesn't have to be anything spectacular, just something to serve me in the meantime. I want to spend no more than $1,100, therefore i decided to purchase on ebay.
But my main question is - Is it better to buy a early 2008 macbook pro 17" (A1261) or a current 09'-10' macbook pro 13" (A1278). I will be mainly using the macbook pro for editing video in final cut and editing photos in photoshop/aperture. On ebay - both units are in the same price range. I would love to hear your opinions.

Hard decision, I'd admit.
1. Processor. I think they're the same, so call it a tie.
2. Video processor. 13" has a better one, but if you can find a 17" with the 512MB memory, then it might be close to a tie.
3. Warranty. Unless the 17" has the extended AppleCare, solid win for the 13". Laptops just start wearing out after a few years, especially the optical drive and HDD.
4. Display. 17" is much easier for photoshopping and video editing.
5. Outputs. The 17" has a FW800, which is important because if you're doing REAL video editing, then you want a FW800 7200RPM external scratch disk. If you're just doing home video, it's not important.
6. Other stuff. Again, if you're doing this professionally or semi-professionally to use Aperture and Photoshop, then you're going to need to upgrade the internal HDD to a 7200 version, and you will want to consider upgrading to 8GB RAM. You can probably do both for around $250.
If I were an up and coming video/photo artist, I would definitely go with the 17", although I'd probably buy a brand new one. If I was in college, learning everything, the 13" is the better choice. -
500GB 7200rpm HD for Macbook Pro
Thinking of upgrading my HD as i have only got 80GB at the moment. Does anybody know of a good 500GB, 7200rpm HD for the Macbook Pro.
I have been looking, but can only find 7200rpm up to 320GB so far.

I was contemplating purchasing a new laptop but after doing the upgrade, I'm happy for at least another year or os.
I HIGHLY recommend the upgrade- I've noticed my machine runs a bit cooler and even battery life is better. I'm assuming that the newer drives have better power management systems than the older drives that originally came with the MBPs.. Your mileage may vary but over the last week or so, I've been VERY impressed with my machine.

Macbook pro gaming seems very sluggish
just upgraded from a Powerbook G4 15 inch... 1.25 GHZ with radeon mobility 9600 (64MB) and a gig of ram...
to a 15 inch standard 2.16 Ghz Macbook Pro.
i've tried loading a couple demo's (including doom... the one they brag about so much on the website ;)), as well as america's army.
These game ran OK-poorly on my old laptop, and i'd say they still run OK to poorly now... so *** gives? It's literally brand new. Bought it yesterday, opened it today.
with a 256mb x600 i was really expecting this to be nothin short of spectacular... i'm pretty dissapointed so far. any ideas why this could be?I've been playing Lineage II in Windows XP mode and it runs pretty swell--although i think the graphics/processing really turns up the heat...It actually crashed after playing for a little more than an hour cos it got so hot... I dont think these macbooks were made to handle the amount of graphics & processing to run some of these games.
I'm afraid it might damage the mbp in the long run. Might have to get a dell xps or alienware for gaming which are made with more substance/practicality/functionality than style -

The battery is not holding a charge what so ever and I realize it is only at 76.9% capacity but is estimated at 80% with 1000 cycles. Is that just an estimate by apple or a warranty? It is older than a year so I realize I'm not covered by that warranty. I really don't feel like paying the $120 for an apple battery and I know aftermarket ones are either hit or miss, but which one would you reccomend?

an 80% maximum charge as compared to the design capacity after 1000 cycles is an estimate, not a guarantee. (Apple’s battery warranty covers manufacturing defects, not maximum charge estimates.) If someone runs power-intensive applications with their display at maximum brightness while on battery power, on average his battery will be consumed more quickly than someone who runs undemanding applications with a dimmed display.
If you’re willing to save some money at the risk of hit-or-miss, then buy an aftermarket battery. If not, then buy an Apple battery. How bad your battery currently is depends on what you’re trying to do on battery power; it might currently suffice for what you’re doing, or it might fall spectacularly short. Only you can make the call of how bad it is. -

Adobe Photoshop CS2 in Macbook Pro
During installation of Adobe Photoshop CS2, the installer runs and freezes in the midst. There is no way of installing Adobe Photoshop CS2 with intel processor. Full reinstallation of Mac OSX doesn't help. Running disk utility doesn't help either. Problems occurred with or without installing of Apple Security Update 2006-003(intel). Any comments?
Edwin, thanks for the input, and I do apologize. You are right. I should be easier with which to live. There are two major problems out there right now. That is also part of the problem. We are not used to two problems in our domain.
I own 20 Mac's in my office, and I only did these updates on my MacBook Pro 17 inch and my G5 Dual 2.3 Ghz machine that has two 30-inch Cinema Displays. I had both problems on my MacBook Pro, and the G5 had the reboot glitch. I won't update the other machines untill these problems are resolved by the OEMs.
Of the two major hiccups out there, this link indicates Quicktime's update is the source of the inability to restart machines, fixed by deleting startup items, I believe. I had this reboot problem also.

Accrobat's freezing the system, the question at hand, is a result of the Security Update, fixed by rolling back to a pre-Security Update state using Archive & Install re-installation of the OS. Archive & Install does not erase your files or network settings.
Apple has released two products that fouled these systems. Bad Quality Assurance I think. I am not sure if the Security Update problem is an Apple or an Adobe software problem, i.e., Adobe may have not followed some software guidance. I am certain both companies are aware of the problem, but I am uncertain of the fix for Acrobat. We probably do need to update for security, but I can't live without Acrobat. So I will wait it out without the Security Update. -

My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
- My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
Starting bootmgr.efi
Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:

The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting

So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ? Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.

And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a mac-model device ID string that specifies yes. An unnecessary hurdle. -

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example. Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized. Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.

Music in the cloud not showing up
This is really starting to get frustrating. Apple needs to get their crap together. I can't access any of my music in the cloud. The "Hide items in the cloud" is greyed out. There are no cloud icons next to my music or movies, local content only. I k
