Macbook Pro Speed!?!

Hi there!
Im asking myself: Im using MacbookPro 15" late 2011. When I'm converting movie files that sometimes takes more than 1 day but CPU and RAM are only used 30% or less!? It could be much faster! Is that caused by my hard drive (only 5400rpm)?? Or whats the reason?
Thanks!!

Hmmm... Those should definitely be optimized. Your HDD doesn't seem like the cause for the issue in this kind of task.
I would have a go with resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Afterwards try to repeat that encoding job.

  • How to increase Macbook Pro speed

    Hello,
I have a 2011 15" Macbook Pro with a 2.2Ghz Core i7, 4Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, Dual Graphics which I use mostly for Photo/Video editing and work on my digital photography business.
For this purpose I have Photoshop CS5.1 and also run Windows 7 using the latest Parallels 8 software.
I find its plenty fast enough when running one or two programs but when switching between Windows and OS and having Photoshop, Bridge, Explorer, Proshow, iMovie and other things open at the same time, the computer can understandably get sluggish and can even freeze up for a minute or two sometimes.
My question is, what would be the best way to speed up and help the Macbook Pro cope?  Would adding more RAM memory or a SSD be the best route to take?
I'm not expecting it to run everything at the same time and have lightning speed, but just wonder if there's something short of getting a mortgage to by a completed specced up version, I can do to improve it.
    Thank

What Kappy says, or simply run only one huge performance program at a time.

Run either CS5 or Windows 7, not both at once.
If your taking screenshots out of iMove for instance, do those first, then save them to the desktop. Then quit it and open Photoshop and do that, then quit and open Windows and transfer them there.
Just plan out your behavior, not have everything open and go random cookoo switiching between them constantly.
You don't have that sort of performance machine, it's only a laptop. To do what you want all the time, intense multitasking, really needs a MacPro, a SSD boot drive and 80 GB's of RAM.
You see, even if you put 16GB of RAM in there, over time Apple and developers are going to bloat their code more and more, especially with 64bit processors to force hardware turnover.
Also with laptops the performance will be intentionally hobbled because of the laptops limited cooling ability.
Right now you might be able to run 4-5 programs at once with 16GB of RAM, but that's not going to be the case next year when 10.9 comes out and newer software.
So the least expensive option is to plan your behavior, because multi-tasking too many programs really isn't efficient, your brain really only can handle one or two things at a time.

  • Macbook Pro speed problems

I just bought a MacBook Pro. I have always been a PC user and I have a number of notebooks curently but I really wanted to try a mac mainly for working with video. But in the three weeks since I bought it I'm shocked by how slow it is for simple things like launching a browser. I still have my two year old Dell that I use for work sitting next to the mac. The new mac has 2 Gigs of ram and yet it's so much slower than the older dell it is shocking. Does anyone else experience this?
Second problem, when the browser loads a page half the time it gives a server not found message. Yet I can load the same site on the Dell instantly without problems. Other times half the images don't load on the web page. Even the Apple site. Does anyone have this problem? I feel like I have steped back about five years in the PC world.
This is a real post and I'm pretty disapointed.
    Thanks

What is the browser that you are using?
Have you done all the Airport Extreme and Firmware Updates via Software Update?
I would recommend Safari over Firefox because it seems to load faster in terms of loading a page or startup.
Also, the only problem with Macbook Pro is the connectivity of Airport Extreme, other than that,it works blazing fast than any PC of comparable specifications.
For my case,i did the Airport update using a LAN connection since wireless wasn't connected to internet.
Dont get put off by this minor issue(which has already been solved),Mac OS X is WAY MORE ADVANCED THAN WINDOWS BY AT LEAST 5 YEARS.

  • MacBook Pro speed problems and strange behaviour

    Hi all,
The last few weeks I experienced a serious performance fall back of my MacBook Pro (sometimes it takes minutes to open a simple application like Safari, or show the content of a folder). So yesterday I decided to address this problem. This is what i did:
    ° Cleaned up my desktop
° Cleared up some space on my HD (to about 110 GB = +20% of 500 GB)
    ° Cleaned up
° In Disk Utility verified and repaired the Disk
° In Disk Utility verified and repaired Disk Permissions
    ° Disabled Dashboard
° Deleted MacKeeper (I keep on reading bad reviews of the application)
    ° Purged my RAM
    ° Ran Onyx Maintenance Scripts
° Cleared most of the cache using Onyx
Between all these activities I repeatedly restarted the MacBook Pro.
All with little or no result. The Mac is still very slow. It’s getting really frustrating. But even worse is that after deleting more than 60 GB from my hard drive there seems to be only 50 GB available on the HD, the same amount as before I started deleting stuff.
At least that’s what System Overview (About this Mac) is showing me, the same number that iStat Menus 4.1 and Onyx are showing. But when I open a Finder window, or ctrl click the HD icon and choose Show Info, I see that there is 110 GB free space on the hard drive.
Given the fact that the Mac is still very slow and the fact that the system apparently doesn’t recognize the free space to its full extend, I wonder if these two are related.`
Furhtermore I experience some minor problems, like incorrect dates of files…
I would appreciate any suggestions to get this solved.
    Cheers,

Thanks for your patience Linc. I’m not sure if I want to erase and reinstall Mac OS X without giving other possibel solutions a chance. So these are the results of the UNIX shell script. I hope this gives you a clue to how to solve the problem.
    Cheers

  • IMac or MacBook Pro Speed questions.

I currently have the PB 1.67 Ghz. For those that have a New Intel MB-Pro or a iMac Core Duo could you please tell me if its a night and day difference in speed when using Motion? I'm Not talking rendering.. I'm talking interface speed.
My current computer is far from real time.
    Thanks
    Chris

Being heavy into Motion, I am reluctant to replace my
G5 with something just slightly faster in FCP/Shake
(and Shake Universal Binary isn't out yet), with a
non-expandable GPU. GPU is everything to Motion - I
want a hyperfast PCIe GFx card.
If I had to buy a new machine today, I'd buy a Quad
    with a 7800, not a MBP.
Patrick, true but individuals may need mobility and the MBP provides this. Granted, I am not the Motion poweruser you are, but Motion runs fast on my MBP. In fact, it feels (yes, this is subjective) like it is faster on the MBP than on the G5 Dual it was previously running on.
It all depends on your budget, the amount of time you will be spending in Motion (compared to other apps and their importance to generating an income or additional dollars), and your mobility needs.

  • MacBook Pro Speed with Lion

How can I speed up my BRAND NEW MacBookPro with Lion?

    janlsyv wrote:
OK...I had the external hard drive with my back up from the MacBook Air plugged in....turned on the new MBPro.. and while it was starting up it asks me if I am bringing in data from somewhere and I clicked from TIME MACHINE.  And thats what I did!  Simple right?   I have a feeling it has something to do with the way the files were brought in.   Just now...I am on the internet looking for flights and pretty much with every CLICK I get the spinning wheel....I can type now ok and there is no spinning wheel but as soon as I ask for something NEW...that wheel comes.  I am going back to the Genius Bar on Tuesday and I want them to WIPE this and we'll try again bringing in the data again.  As I have been "googling" this issue though..seems I am not the only one dealing with it with the new operating system.  I know you said its not LION..but why are so many people saying the same thing?
Although I am new to Mac I have been a computer user for many many years.
It has been my experience that when setting up a new computer it is a poor idea to use any type of importing/migration software to take old data from the last computer to your new one. IMHO it just doesn't work the way most think it will. Junk gets carried over, files and setting that are best left on the old system get integrated into the new system.
I have found that once you get the new system up and running, User name or names, passwords, system settings the way you like, it is best to install the programs you use on the new system clean then Copy Over your personal user data from the old system.
I know Apple is trying to make it easy for the normal users but really most of the time they end up where you are now. With a system that is bogged down with old data and settings.
If the system you bought is new it should be fairly fast. Although it only has a 5400RPM drive in it which is slow in todays computer world.
Once you get this straightened out you might think about installing a SSD and definitely upgrade the RAM to 8GB (under $50 from most resellers). If you need more storage space you could look into getting a Optical bay caddy to install another hard drive and or replace the main drive with one that spins at 7200 RPM. It really does make a world of difference.
Try using the system with out using the migration assistant to import your old data and program.
On my MBP 15", i7 2.2 I installed a 128GB SSD and upgraded the RAM to 8GB. From the desktop with the Shutdown, Sleep, Restart dialog windows open from hitting the R key to reboot back to the logon screen takes 18 seconds.

  • Macbook Pro Speed Test

    Hey everyone,
So I purchased a new "super fast" MSP just a few weeks ago. I am having some continuing issues with computer lagging when opening programs and what not. So far I am a little under impressed with what has been reported as lightning fast speed. Are there any simple programs that I can use that will check whether the dual processors/RAM/VRAM are working according to specs?
    Thanks!

What programs are you running? If they are applications that have not been optimized for the Intel chip ("Universal") you will not see "super fast" speeds. While programs like Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office will run just fine on your new machine, they are run using an emulation layer called Rosetta. Rosetta will allow the PowerPC applications to run (generally without a hitch), but they will load somewhat slowly and performance will not be ideal.
You also don't specify how much memory is in your machine. If it's the stock 512MB, you should consider upgrading to 1GB or even the maximum 2GB; Rosetta is a memory hog and the additional memory will dramatically speed up your system.
Net-net: based on the limited information you have provided, I would guess that your machine is running normally...

  • Can i upgrade my macbook pro memory?

i would like to increase my macbook pro speed, i have 4 gb RAM, 500 Gb HD, 2.3 ghz, what should i upgrade?
HD to a SSD or RAM to 8 Gb???
whats the most important thing to increase speed? is it the processor the most important or its not at all?

It all depends on which MacBook Pro model you have - I have a late 2011 and have upgraded to 16GB of RAM and a SSD, shortly after I received my 'new' MBP in April. You'll notice great speed differences in memory-hungry apps if you upgrade your RAM but you'll really be amazed at the shear speed of an SSD.
You should consider what's really slowing you down before making any upgrade - I can't imagine running on 4 GB of RAM these days, but then I can't imagine running without my SSD either. If I were you, I would first make the least expensive upgrade - RAM - taking your MBP to it's maximum, and then look at SSD options.
Please let us know your model - by year is most helpful.

  • Universal FCS 5.1 on MacBook Pro

Just wondering how many people are using the new Universal Binary of Final Cut Studio 5.1 on a new MacBook Pro. I've noticed many people saying they've received their crossgrades, but not heard much about how everything's working. Could this be a good sign?
I'm using FCS at work on a DP 2.0 G5 with 2.5Gigs of RAM, and at home I'm stuck with a 1Gig Dell with 512Mb of RAM and Avid XpressDV...so I'm looking to upgrade my equipment for my freelance work, but I want to know what the MacBook Pro speed comparisons are like against the G5.
    Thanks!

Peter Wiggins has. And tested just what you want to know too:

  • My Macbook Pro Retina 2012 is running very slow and gives me frequent speed problems.

So, I've noticed it happen gradually for about a year now. It started with just minor but not significant delays in opening up programs, but I didn't mind it because the computer was still fast compared to a PC, which is what I used to use before this Macbook. I got this macbook in 2012, and luckily I still have a warranty, but it'll close soon.
    Right now, some problems include:
    1)
    2) Shutting down and turning on the computer is slow (sorry no picture on this one). When I first bought this mac, and until about a year ago, whenever I turn it on/off it would do it instantly. But now, there is a bit of a delay when turning off. The screen seems to just freeze at a certain frame, stays that way for a few seconds (longer when turning it off right after playing a game or two-- don't worry they're compatible with Mac OS), and then shuts off. And when it's frozen at that frame time, you can still see the background materials because they're only faded away. You know what I'm talking about-- Macbook turns out when turning off and then shuts down. So, much of the screen is white, but you can still see the screen prior to the shut down faded.
    3) Internet is running extremely slow. When I check my speed at speedtest.net, I get around 47 mbps on bad days and 53-ish on good days (download speed)

Resetting computer to factory conditions doesn't work, time-machine didn't work, and clearing more storage space didn't work either. I would like to get this problem fixed before my warranty runs out. Thanks for reading and any sort of help will be appreciated!

Do you know of any specific tasks or situations that cause it to perform poorly? If so, make a note of those and demonstrate them for Apple. Do NOT, under any circumstances, restart the machine. You want it at its worst when you take it in. If you try to do any of those magic resets, it may just reset things just long enough for Apple to proclaim it healthy. If Apple does that anyway, then there are plenty of opportunities to try those things later after your warranty has expired.
I wish I knew exactly when it does this, but it doesn't always happen. It sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't. I thought about this, too. But the problem is that it's really hard to catch a time or figure out what causes these symptoms to occur. I haven't taken it to Apple because I thought it'll just be a waste of time because they'll probably say that it's healthy so they don't have to put any money/effort to try and fix it...

  • Does anyone know how to reset the fan on a MacBook Pro 13-inch (Late 2011) to it's factory setting speed (Maybe Terminal may help?)

I have a late-2011 13-inch MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite. (Standard configuration).
My problem is that I downloaded a fan control application and it worked perfectly, but it started to get annoying so I deleted it.
Does anyone know how to reset the fan speed back to factory settings (Maybe a command in terminal?)

  • What's the maximum LAN speed with the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter on my MacBook Pro?

While I was at Yodobashi Camera yesterday, I got a Thunderbolt to Gigabit ethernet adapter for my MacBook Pro. I figure, since I'm paying for the high speed fiber optic (Sony Nuro), why limit my self to wi-fi speeds at home?
Before connecting the adapter, via wi-fi it the speed was 143.8 Mbps down and 181.5 Mbps up.
After connecting the adapter and making a direct LAN connection to the router, the speed is 783.2 Mbps down and 940.1 Mbps up.
I'm certainly happy with the speed, but since Sony Nuro is supposed to be 2 Gbps down and 1 Gbps up I was wondering what the maximum possible is with this computer and adapter. Before asking the provider I was curious what the maximum specs where.
    The ether cable is a 3 m category 6.
    Thanks,
    doug

It's not really your computer that is getting the 2Gbps download - it is the router/ modem.
If you hooked better/ different hardware up you could probably push those speeds around your network too. The trouble is that most residential hardware is gigabit ethernet not fibre. Fibre cards & cable are expensive in comparison.
The existing hardware may allow you to 'bond or aggregate' multiple ethernet connections into one link to get more speed over ethernet. Obviously this requires more complex routers, switches & a network admin to set it up
Those speeds sound nice, this bottleneck will mean that other devices on you network can't choke up the whole connection & make other users sad.

  • My MacBook Pro 2010 unable to link with SSD at SATA 2, 3 Gb speed

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid-2010 that I used with the standard 5400 RPM HDD for about a year. Last week I decided to replace it with an SSD, the Corsair Force GT 120 GB to be more precise. I knew that my MacBook Pro model only supports SATA I & SATA II & that the SSD is backwards compatible. I expected (and still expect) the SSD to link up at SATA II 3 Gb speed.
However, System Profiler gives the following information:
    NVidia MCP89 AHCI:
      Vendor:          NVidia
      Product:          MCP89 AHCI
      Link Speed:          3 Gigabit
      Negotiated Link Speed:          1.5 Gigabit
      Description:          AHCI Version 1.30 Supported
    Corsair Force GT:
      Capacity:          120,03 GB (120.034.123.776 bytes)
      Model:          Corsair Force GT
      Revision:          1.3.3
Benchmark tests show my write & read speeds are at about 100 & 110-130 MB/s. I have searched for a while on this and other forums and not been able to find a way to get negotiated link speed at 3 Gb and then to check whether this solves the rather sluggish performance.
Some extra info that might be useful:
-The 1.3.3 firmware of the SSD is the latest available. There are also no updates available via Apple Software Update.
-The SSD is the only drive in my system. After booting to the Mac OS X Lion DVD I had created, I used the disk tool to partition the new drive with the settings at GUID partition table & HFS+ Journaled. I haven't experienced any other problems.
-I have reset the SMC, PRAM & NVRAM. This didn't change anything.
-I haven't installed any Windows version using Boot Camp (yet).
-System has Boot ROM Version:          MBP71.0039.B0B and SMC Version (system):          1.62f6
    Thank you in advance.

Guys, have any of you tried these:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBook_Pro_EFI_Firmware_Update_1_7_
    http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/22/macbook-pro-update-rights-the-wrong-enables-3 gbps-sata-transfer/
Or solved the problem any other way? I'm thinking on buying a SSD.
    Thanks, and cheers

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!
