MacBook Pro - Spinning Beachball

Hi all,
My macbook pro is having serious problems.
The original hard disk died a view weeks back, this was confirmed by the apple store in Seattle.
When i returned to the UK i bought a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB drive and paid to have it installed and have my old documents rescued onto it.
With this new HD in i am continuously getting the spinning beachball. It is not restricted to certain apps. I just get it all the time.
It happens if i double click on a folder in the finder. if i click an app on the dock, if i open system preferences, anything basically.
tried all the usual:
disk permissions
disk first aid
reset pram
i have now done a fresh install of 10.6 and not installed any other apps and guess what, it is still doing it.
I have been using macs for years and normally sort out any problems that i have had.
Do you reckon it is possibly a dodgy HD that has been installed?
MacBook Pro - Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz -  4GB Ram.

i am now running disk warrior and am getting the "speed reduced by disk malfunction" notice whilst rebuilding the directory.
i'm guessing that means the drive is faulty.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro - Spinning Beachball - Why?

Over the last few months I've noticed a rapid decline in the performance of my macbook pro. I've used it to produce music on it without issues so it should still be quite a capable machine. At first I thought it might be my new WD 750Gb scorpio black hard drive but I've since reverted back to my original factory hard drive and the problem is the same. I have been using CCC rather than doing a fresh install so I don't know whether doing a fresh install will help. When I first started out I have leopard - is Lion or Mountain Lion (which I currently run) more processor intensive? I get this spinning beachball often when I'm not doing anything particularly heavy on the cpu. When opening apps and sometimes they don't respond and when I click launchpad sometimes the icons are blank until it has time to visually update them. Ableton often takes up to 5 mins to open but its usually about a minute or so these days. I've reparied all permissions, verified hard drives, reset my PRAM & SMC and tried 2 different hard drives. The battery is on 'replace now' and I notice it may be swollen as sometimes it intereferes with my trackpad functioning (clicking). My 250GB hard drive has about 40gb free on it too as I tried deleting things to free it up. The decline of the battery may coincide with the decline in performance but I can't say for sure if they are related.
I know my laptop is old now but it was working prefectly not that long ago. Is there any kind of log or screenshot I could post to give you more information to help?

My 250GB hard drive has about 40gb free
Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

    Mac Performance Guide
    Slimming your hard drive
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.
    =======================
The battery is on 'replace now' and I notice it may be swollen as sometimes it intereferes with my trackpad functioning (clicking).
You should not be using your computer until the battery is replaced.  If it is indeed swollen and/or leaking, it will cause serious internal damage.
    Have you tried the following?
    Mountain Lion Recovery
Boot up from your computer by holding down the command+r keys.  This will take you to the recovery drive.
Select Disk Utility & hit Return.
In Disk Utility select the HD on the left & click on Repair Disk (bottom right).

  • Mountain Lion on mid-2009 MacBook Pro spinning beachball is becoming frequent

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 2.53 GHZ 4 GB ram and more and more I am getting the spinning beachball. When verifying permissions it says Est time 1 minute for close to 5 minutes, My TM drive won't repair.  The machine is just much slower. I have a new hard drive and I replaced the battery because it was giving me a battery error. Is this all the result of running Mountain Lion? I have had it for several months and it just seems to be getting worse.

Surprised there hasn't been anyone else experiencing this issue.
    I have seen this on 2 new MBP 2.3mhz i5's with the Intel HD 3000 384mb graphics, Lion 10.7.3 & 10.7.4.
Also with the latest Lion firmware for the late 2011 MBP's that addresses compatibility and stability issues.
Hopefully there is a fix soon because the painting on my locked screen to login is getting annoying

  • Macbook pro spinning beachball crash

I desperately need some help - I have tried searching the problem, but I don't really know what I'm talking about, so don't know what to look for.
Recently my (kinda old now) macbook pro has started hanging on some simple tasks. The last crash involved attempting to save a picture from a website. The beachball will spin, then keep spinning. I can still move the mouse, but then that freezes and the ball keeps spinning. I have either pressed and held the power button to restart, or closed the lid. When I reopen the lid after a while, the mac has restarted itself. A crsah report then generates.
I recently swapped the optical drive for a second hard drive. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the problem. The primary harddrive is an SSD.
    Below is the crash report.

  • MacBook Pro  spinning wheel whenever I click on anything.

    Help!
I have a MacBook Pro and I keep getting a spinning wheel everytime I click on a page.

Use Recovery Mode. Then choose Disk Utility and Repair Disk, click first on the top "WDXXXX" drive name, then after that is checked, click on "My Mac Hard Drive" whatever volume-name you use, and repair that.
Do a Safe Boot. Hold Shift key.
Click on page, as in Safari? clear and reset the cache, history, favorites, top sites. Open Safari in Safe Mode. Disable any 3rd party extensions. Turn off plug-ins.
Has the problem changed? stopped? something else?
Mavericks and Safari and MacBook Pro have their own forum.

  • Macbook pro spinning wheel issue in Safari

I am currently using a macbook pro 10.5.8 version I've noticed that whenever I'm in Safari or Firefox and I start to click on things, the rainbow spinning wheel icon appears for a long time before the thing I click on is loaded. Sometimes it keeps hanging up and even crashes. Is there a quick fix to this problem? I don't have time to take it to the Genius Bar. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Your operating system is outdated and insecure, especially Safari, you need to backup you files off the machine to a storage drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
Then call Apple via phone for 10.6.3 white retail disks, it's inexpensive.
Next follow this proccedure to erase the entire hard drive with Disk Utility > Security Zero All Data, install 10.6 and then setup, software update to 10.6.8 (and stay there, don't upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If your computer still has beachballs while offline, then the hard drive is bad and will need to be replaced.
You likely also need to secure your router, update it's firmware or replace it with a newer one (Wireless N) and properly secure it from hackers.

  • 2008 Macbook pro Spinning color wheel

2008 Macbook pro will load to the desktop after login, but the spinning color wheel spins nonstop. I can access application on the dock, but i cannot click on any functions on the top toolbar. I restored the OS but it just sat at a grey loading screen after installation. Cant get into disk utility to verify/repair disk. How can i solve this issue?

Have you tried to boot the MBP with the OPTION key down?  If successful, it should display two HDD icons.  Select the recovery partition, on the right, and then select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu.  Run Disk Utility>First Aid>Verify and Repair.
    Ciao.

  • Frozen MacBook Pro - spinning pinwheel

What to do? I turn on my MacBook Pro (with latest Lion) and it is frozen with rainbow pinwheel. I cannot open anything. Help

I just bought a new 15" MacBook Pro. After I dowloaded all updates, it asked me to restart it. I did so, but I just can't boot the system up. I can hear the sound at the start and then all I can see is the gray apple and the spinning wheel. It just won't move from there. What is wrong with it?

  • 15" i7 Core MacBook Pro + Spinning Beach Balls of Death = What's going on?

As the title suggests, I bought a 15" i7 Core MacBook Pro about 3 weeks ago, but I notice that it has many beach balls (or spinning colored circles) when trying to use applications such as iTunes or Safari on my up to date Mac. Most of the time it happens when I try to open something, but I noticed slow loading times for some applications as well as them being non-responsive to where I have to force quit them (or in iPhoto '11's case, it one time crashed and I had to relaunch).
I did some research, and I found that this issue has affected other Core i7 MacBook Pro and iMac users. I already did a fresh install of Snow Leopard, updated all of my software, and I next am going to run Disk Utility and TechTool Deluxe to see if that will help at all (doubt it will as I still had this problem after running Disk Utility before the fresh install with a temporary improvement before the problems came back).
So, what's going on with my new Mac? I could always bring it into the Apple Store and have the Genius Bar look at it (as it's covered for 3 years under AppleCare), but I wonder if there's something I can do on my end which could perhaps avoid that. Any and all input is appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion, Dale, but the SBBODs come across multiple applications, so it's hard to tell what may be causing it. I can check Activity Monitor the next time I see a SBBOD and see if terminating it helps. I hope it's not (and I don't think it is) a hardware issue as my MBP is only 3 weeks old!
Also, as I think about it, I read on that handy dandy SBBOD FAQ that having the option to put hard disks to sleep whenever possible unchecked to speed up hard drive access time. I also noticed that it stated to do this if I notice lag when accessing a hard drive. I have SBBODs when trying to open a file in programs such as iPhoto, Pages, etc. Also, I notice that programs, iTunes comes to mind, can become non-responsive when trying to do certain things (like using the iTunes store, accessing a different pane like music to iPhone, etc.). Could this be a possible culprit?
Speaking of hardware, I have 4 GB of DDR3 RAM installed. Additionally, I have a Core i7 2.66 GHz processor, just to answer an asked question.

  • Mac Pro spinning beachball solution

I was about to submit my problem when I just stumbled onto the solution and thought this might help someone else. I recently upgraded from a 2006 Mac Pro to an Early 2009 Mac Pro. I removed my 750 GB HD with 10.7.5 installed from the orig Mac Pro and installed it into the 2009 Mac Pro and booted up. I got to the login screen and immediately I started seeing delays and spinning beachballs that lasted approx 30 seconds and occured every 10 seconds, and I could hear the hard drive suddenly go quiet as soon as the beachball appeared and then it would start chattering again when the beachball "let go". I tried a booting from another hard drive and the computer worked just fine, so I removed my 750 GB boot drive and noticed that the drive was jumpered to limit it to 1.5 GBPs, so I removed the jumper and oila, computer was working fine! I verified the 3GBPs status in System Information and made sure all of my hard drives were set to 3 GBPs. Hope this helps!

Hey hatter. I didn't put the jumper on the drive, I didn't even know ithe jumper was installed until I took a good look at it after I put it in my new Mac Pro and started having problems. Must have come that way from Tiger Direct. The strange thing is, why did it work fine with my orig Mac Pro?

  • 2008 macbook pro spinning ball and now won't completely start up.

i woke my computer up this morning and it wouldn't respond. it started with the spinning rainbow pinwheel, but now it won't log in. the farthest it's gotten is the desktop but it's blank - no icons, dock, or top bar. is there a way to troubleshoot this or does it sound like a hardware issue? does it sound like the hard drive is crashing?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Macbook Pro 13-inch Late 2011 with constant Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD)

    Hi Guys!
I really have a problem with the Spinning Wheel of Death and slow performance all the time. It suddently started after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.
These are the things i've tried so far:
    - Boot up in Safe Mode and Internet Recovery Mode to repair disc permissions and disc = No Errors found at all
    - Used SMARTreporter but everything returned as OK
    - Installed 16GB of ram installed
    - Looked in Activity Monitor, but everything appears to be okay with both RAM, CPU and HD
    - Boot with Apple Hardware Test = Everything OK
    - Booted up in Internet Recovery and erased the entire HD, clean installed OS X Lion (the OS i bought the Macbook Pro with)
First i thought it was a problem with my HD or my RAM. But everything is returning the OK result. I really hope some of you out there can help me, cause right now its realy hard to use it at the University. It looks like its a software problem, but i can't figure it out.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
