Macbook pro ssd recommendations

hello people. I have a 2011 macbook pro 15" and i am not not happy with the responsiveness, the start up speed, and all. I have decided to install an ssd of 256GB and then 8GB ram.
Can i get recomendations on which one to buy please (the ssd).
Thank you

Crucial provides a wide range of alternatives for both RAM and SSD. Just select your MBP and it will show you compatible versions.
RAM: http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
SSD: http://www.crucial.com/store/ssd.aspx
However, you should research to find if you really need these upgrades.
Memory updates are useful when you're multitasking a lot applications. Also your operating system can cache frequently used applications/files into memory and decrease access-time of those applications/files. When you boot up your computer, it load operating system and startup application. Then it uses the rest of the memory to do this caching. It does this slowly, so that it won't disturb you by hard disk usage and slow your system down.
Hard drives are mature elements of computers. There are a lot of correction and fault-proofing going on behind the scene. SSD, however, is a new technology and there are couple of problems, such as lifespan, decreasing performance, so on and so fourth.

  • Macbook pro ssd

Hi all, the hard disk has failed in my Macbook Pro (MC724B/A early 2011) and I'd like to replace it with a SSD drive to improve speed and reliability.  Ideally I'd like a drive in the region of 500GB.
Before I order one I wanted to see if anyone had any experience of advice in replacing the existing drive with an SSD one and what make or manufacturer you'd recommend.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

You are not in MacBook Pro forum.
Yes, http://www.macsales.com/ssd has some options and video guide.
If it was me and it could take any off the shelf SSD I would probably choose a different brand.
For PCIe, there are other options I favor also.

  • Using an early 2013 Macbook Pro ssd with another Macbook externally?

    Hi,
I have an early 2013 macbook pro with retina display that got very badly damaged. Can the ssd be removed from it and used in an enclosure as an external hard drive with my new macbook? And are such enclosures readily available?
    Thanks,
    Nick.

    I would give OWC a call.  http://eshop.macsales.com/search/retina+ssd+enclosure
They have bare enclosures for retinaMBPs, but not for your specific model.  But they do sell external SSDs in an enclosure for your model.  Find out if they can sell just the enclosure.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro SSD drive: need to free up space

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro (late 2011), running OSX 10.7.5, with a 128GB SSD drive. The problem I have is that I am running out of space on my drive, even though I don't appear to be storing that much on it. When I view my usage in 'About This Mac', I get the following:
    Audio=38.2 GB; Movies=0 GB; Photos=7.64 GB; Apps=12.73 GB; Other 41.06 GB
Backups are 0 and my Documents folder is only around 5 GB; my Trash and Downloads are empty too.
So the question I have is, what is this 41.06 GB (or minus the Documents folder around 36 GB)? I have searched through the system folders and I can't find anything that is accounting for this data.
I seem to recall from day 1 of owning this MacBook (my first MacBook I admit), that my drive has been filling up somewhere with gigs of data, and I can't seems to account for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I always forget about the sleepimage file. I turned that off a long time ago.
I have been running Lion for just over a year, and Mt Lion for part of that (Now back to Lion) and have never had this problem. As most Mac users don't. It is a glitch in the OS, is all I can think of.
You could use the Recovery HD, or the Online Recovery system, to Wipe (Re-Partition if you use the Online system) the drive and then reinstall Lion and restore only settings, programs and files from your TM backup at the first boot of the newly install OS.

I've managed to account for 17 GB which is being used in the 'sleepimage' file. Still another 20 GB to go.....
It would probably be easier to buy a 512 GB disc and install this. However, from what I have read with other people having the same problem, some people are losing a whopping >200 GB in space, which they can't account for in Lion.

  • Macbook Pro  SSD SATA III - Worth it?

    Hello everyone
I own a mid-2010 13 inch MacBook Pro (2.4 Core 2 Duo). Since i cannot afford a new mac, i want to speed it up a little bit.
The first thing i did was to upgrade the memory to 8GB (from Crucial). The next thing i would like to do, is replace the hard disk with
an SSD one. I have checked many SSD's and i ended up between Crucial and OWC (128GB versions).
I can afford the cost of an SSD but i just realized that these drives are SATA 3. While, if i am not mistaken, my macbook
supports SATA 2 as maximum speed. Is it worth to buy a 6GB/s SSD afterall or not?
I would really appreciate your help and experience.
    Thanks
    Dimitris

You're correct, they are SATA II, which is limited to 3Gb/s, so it's not worth it to get the faster solid state. Still, though, even at 3Gb/s, you're going to see a giant performance boost over your current hard disk. Enjoy your solid state!

  • Macbook Pro SSD vs HD?  Memory?

I am about to get a MacBook Pro for school. Im going to need it mostly for video editing(final cut , avid etc..), photoshop( the whole  ADOBE CS 5),  music(itunes, IDVD ec..) uploading movies, pictures etc...I need to know what my best option is regarding hard drives, should I invest in the SSD or stick with the standard drive it comes with?
also if i get the 8gb memory option and stay with the standard hard drive is that good ?
and whats the difference between 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm?
i want something with good battery life as well.
    thank you !

ok i think upgrading myself makes the most senseas ive heard more good things about that. Now for the processor what difference does the 2.4GHz to the 2.5GHZ make, is it worth paying the extra $230 since that is not upgradeable?
No it is not worth what Apple is charging for that upgrade. Actually it is a 2.4 GHz CPU as apposed to the 2.2 GHz CPU.
That money would be better spent on RAM, Aftermarket for under $50, and at least a 7200RPM  HDD, again Aftermarket for around $120+/-.
Then get a SATA to USB adapter for under $20 to use the original drive as a backup disk.

  • Ordering 17" Macbook Pro ~ SSD or Standard HDD??

I am ordering my new 17" Macbook Pro direct from Apple, and I think I will be going with the 256MB SSD, but am not sure if the added $500 over the cost of a 500MB 7200 RPM SATA Drive is too expensive. Are there other larger, perhaps less expensive after market SSD's that I can install in a new Macbook Pro?

I'm going to return the SSD to Amazon. Even when it was put in the primary bay, with optical drive re-mounted in it's original space, it would never partition properly. Seems pretty clear at this point that the fault lies with the drive itself.

  • New Macbook Pros: SSD's upgraded to SATA rev3.0?

I have searched  tech specs all over Apple's site; I cannot find a thing about the SSD's of the new MacBook Pros. In some of the 2011 releases,  SATA 3.0 connections started appearing—even though their drives were not 6Gbit/s per se. Does anyone know if they've progressed to faster SSD's?

Since this post I've checked the retina display notebooks at my local Apple store, and discovered that they are equipped with 6 Gb/s solid states. Also, all of the new MacBook Air SSDs are 6 Gb/s link-speed.

  • Macbook Pro SSD Upgrade, odd issues!

    Hello everyone
    My first post here !
    I recently purchased a
    HyperX 240GB SATA3 3K 2.5-inch Gaming SSD Drive
I am having some really weird issues trying to migrate OSX Mavericks to this SSD.
I cloned my HDD to the SDD I used a SATA docking station for this.
If I try and boot the SSD by putting it into the macbook ( connecting to the internal SATA cable) then it will not boot into the OS. However is does appear within Disk utilities with the parathion 'disk0s1' even though I titled it 'Mac OSX'
The strange thing is that if I take it out of the macbook and boot it via the docking station then it works fine and boots to the OS.  ( No drive inside)
The old HDD still works fine internally so I do not believe it is a problem with the SATA cable.
I have also checked the firmware is up to date on the SSD, which it is.
If anyone has an idea of what could be going on here that would be great.
    Thanks

I would do the following (should have been done from the start:)
Install the drive in your MBP. If you have a Late 2011 MBP or later then do this:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. You can upgrade to Mavericks via the App Store if needs be.

  • Can retina macbook pro ssd be upgraded in any way?

so can 13 inch models ssd be replaced with bigger storage option? are there any apple or third party replacements available? if yes then what is aproximate cost for each and how fast can replacement drive be(can it measure up to original) ?

For late 2013 MBPs, only Apple could do any repair in the situation that you describe.  Exactly how they would do it, I cannot answer with authority, but if the SSD was the only issue, I would think only that would be replaced, not the whole logic board.  The SSD is held in place by one T5 Toex screw.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro SSD Capacity

The storage reading of my Macbook is reporting that 'Applications' are taking up 413GB of my 256GB hard drive, yet it still reports that I have 187GB free on the disk. I am trying to find out the cause of this mis-reported figure. The issue has been present since OSX 10.9 and has carried over to Yosemite.

I have the identical problem that you have, with the same history. Burt my drive is only 128 flash storage, showing 69Gb of Applications and about the same amount free. My iMac does not have this problem. I hope somebody has a solution.

  • MacBook Pro SSD problem

Hi, I have an early 2011 MBP and I could install successfully an Intel 330 series 120GB SSD, it just worked well for 6 months. But since yesterday the MBP is not recognizing the SSD anymore. I have tried the SSD in a white MB and the SSD works fine, also I have swaped the Intel SSD for an OCZ and that has the same issue. In disk utility I have tried to erease the disk but failed also the reinstall fails. Any idea what to do?

Since the hard drive worked for the 1st 6 months I would first contact the vendor.  You should have some sort of a warranty.

  • Available space on my MacBook Pro SSD

When I check space available via "About this Mac" it shows 195 GB's available.  When I right click on the HD displayed on my Desktop and seclect "Get Info" the available space show's 336 GB's.  Which of these is the more accurate source of information?

Nevermind! A previous post answered my question!
    Thanks!
