MacBook Pro stalls during new software update

During the most recent Apple Software Update, the MacBook stalls at the final stage...
Screen shows bar with message "moving items into place". Computer ran overnight trying to install this update. Is it safe to restart? Update includes new Lion combo update?
Help

Finally... Okay, here's the solution from Apple! (I called, got a waiver, and resolved the issue - after 3 days of trying...)
1. Download the OS 10.7.3 Combo Pkg from the Apple Support Downloads site.
2. Close all programs. (Use Force Quit under the Apple logo drop down menu in top left corner, if needed)
3. Go to Utilities and run the Disk Utility... Verify (and Repair in necessary) the Disk where the OS is to be installed, then run the Repair permissions.
4. Shut down the computer using the shut down command under the Apple logo drop own menu .
5. Re-start the computer in safe mode (hold down shift key and press power button - continue holding shift down until you see progress bar)
6. Run the install pkg previously downloaded.
The install program should run without hanging. (It worked for me)
Good luck

After restart, shows "installing 3 items". Progress bar moved quickly to just shy of half and is now stalled. It has been like this for 4 hours even though it says time remaining is less than one minute. Help!

  • I recently updated my MacBook Pro to the new software, and now my iMessage and my FaceTime are not connected with my computer. How do I get them to match so that I would be able to use my cellphone number?

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to the new software, and now my iMessage and my FaceTime are not connected with my phone number like it is supposed to be. How do I get them to match so that I would be able to use my cellphone number on my notebook?

To reset any OS X program just go to the folder and trash the affected files.
    Open a new Finder Window
Click "Go" in the above status bar
Click and HOLD the "option/alt" key and you will see "Library" now show in the above list
Click Library while still holding the option/alt key and a new window will open with all of your system files
Go to the preference file (NOT Preference Panes)
    Locate a file named <com.apple.FaceTime.bag.plist>
    Locate another file named <com.apple.FaceTime.plist>
    Locate the file <com.apple.iMessage.bag.plist>
Drag the files to the trash
    Delete the trash
Close FaceTime and iMessage if not already closed
Relaunch FaceTime and iMessage from Applications folder
This should reset the program back to default. You will have to put your information back into the program but it should work.
    Good Luck.

  • My macbook pro stalls during software update and never finishes the update

My Macbook Pro is a 17-inch laptop purchased in early 2011. It's on system 10.7.5.  Software Update keeps telling me I need to update.
I click ok, it starts to update, then gets stalled "moving 3 items into place".
I've tried many times to do this update, but it NEVER finishes the update, just stays stalled "moving items into place" and it can stay that way for HOURS.  Then I need to go back to work, so I re-start.  What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Macbook Pro frozen screen from software update

Did a software update to macbook pro, but now the grey screen with Apple logo and spinning wheel are the only things displayed for the past several hours.  I've already tried a hard shut down and reboot, but still get the same results.

First, try booting your Mac in safe mode as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Be aware that booting in safe mode can take a little longer than a normal startup, so I would give it about 15 minutes before giving up. If this works, just restart your Mac and see if it boots up normally again.
If you can't boot into safe mode, there is probably a filesystem issue that is preventing your Mac from fully starting up. You can only fix this by booting into OS X Recovery and launching Disk Utility there to have it repair your system drive. The steps depend on which version of OS X and which model of MacBook Pro you're using.
Generally, there is one of two options:
    1. Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Cmd+R keys.
    2. If this doesn't bring up OS X Recovery, you'll need a bootable rescue medium, such as an OS X DVD or a Recovery USB stick. Insert it and keep pressing the option key (alt) during startup, until you get the choice to boot from the rescue medium.

  • Macbook pro stalls during startup

My macbook pro with Yosemite stalls during startup.  I've tried Command R and ran disk utility.  The disk is ok.  I've zapped the RAM but it still stalls about 25% of the way through the startup process.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook pro not booting after software update

    Dear all,
Since two days ago my macbook pro hangs at the gray apple screen, the round circle keeps on turning. Kept it running for nights but it does not exit this status. I read on the internet that I could run it in verbose mode, that's what I did, see screenshot below. What do you recommend? This seems to be a hard disk issue. How can I boot up in safe mode and possibly recover the hard disk data? Any other recommendations?
    Thanks,

Get your Mac to a Computer repair service, or do it yourself. You will need to put it in an external SATA reader, like I did. I recovered files via an older mac running Slow Leopard and copied files to it.
    What I did:
    1. You will have to remove the screws at the bottom of your Mac, in order to get to the HDD (or SSD, whatever you have).
    2. You need to remove the HDD and put it in an external Case/SATA reader
    3. Copy files from your HDD to another Mac
    4. On that other Mac, go to Disk Utility (search in spotlight) and Erase as 'Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)'
    5. Download Mountain lion on another Mac from the AppStore, and go to that Applications folder.
    6. Right click on the downloaded file and select “Show Package Contents”. Go to “Contents” and jump inside the “SharedSupport” folder and you’ll find a file titled “InstallESD.dmg”. Copy this over to the desktop.
    7. Plug in a USB flash drive to your Mac having at least 4GB memory. We highly suggest going ahead with an 8GB one just to be on the safe side.
    8. Now open up “Disk Utility” and drag InstallESD.dmg from the desktop to the left-hand sidebar. Select the attached USB from left side and click on “Partition” tab.
    9. Select “1 Partition” from the Volume Scheme dropdown menu. Choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” from the left.
    10. Now click on “Option” at the bottom. Select “GUID Partition Table” and press OK. Now click on Apply at the bottom right to start formatting.. (NOTE: This is will erase all data on your USB flash drive)
    11. Once the drive has been formatted, click on “Restore” (it’s right next to where you clicked on “Partition in Step 5).
    12. Choose USB drive you plugged-in in Step 5 as “Destination” with the InstallESD.dmg file as “Source”.
    13. Click Restore and type in your password (if you have any). This will create the intended Lion bootable USB flash drive
    14. Reboot your Mac with the USB drive plugged in. Hold the “Option” key on your keyboard when you hear the iconic OS X startup chime. You can now boot into your Flash drive from there.
    15. Follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X , and after that, reboot
    16. Format USB back to FAT in Disk Utility, copy your files from old PC to new using the USB.
That's it, you're done . Takes a lot of time, but recovered my Mac this way!

  • MacBook Pro 10.6.8 software updates will not install

I have five software updates that will not install. I have checked my hardware and my disk space and all seem fine. I also, downloaded and installed the Apple Software Installer Update 1.0 but my updates will still not install. Any other suggestions?

Installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you. Restart your Mac after the combo is installed. It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.8. Then try launching the app.
if that doesn't help, try contacting the developer of the app >  http://support.aspyr.com/home

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

We can't help you if you don't even know what you are installing.  Never install anything if you do not know what it is.  Installings through Software Update always have explanations which you should be reading to see if you actually need and/or want them.
That being said, it appears you attempted to upgrade to Mavarick.  Although I am not positive.
Sorry, I am going to back out of this because I nor you know what it was you installed.  Hopefully, someone else will chime in here.
    GOOD LUCK!

Ya know what I'm on a brand new MBP just about 24 hours old and you know whats been working amazingly for me. I have a 27inch iMac as well and i've just connected it to my network and been dragging files and apps across the network onto my new MBP. Its really working fast and its flawless. You could always do that option, Just go into sharing options and turn them on for both Macs. Then just click and drag. Of course they have to both be on the same network for this to be possible.
    Look at my network.
Shared is what your looking at.  I click on there see all my computers files and then drag the ones i want form its folder to my MBP folders.  Hope that helps if your looking for a very simple way on a wireless network.
