MacBook Pro Stalls @ Startup

When asked for my password at startup the laptop stalls. I have had to reinstall the computer system software once and re-set everything once.
I have also reset the PRAM (parameter random access memory) which worked once. Laptop stalled again, so I tried to reset the Power Management Unit, which hasnt worked. I tired to start up by holding option button then powering on.
Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks.
MacBook Pro 17in   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

i have a problem sort've similar to this. when i first got my computer (only about 2 weeks ago) startup time was super fast, but now (all updates installed) it hangs a bit on the screen just before login. (i only use one account on this computer)
could this have anything to do with the firmware update they recently released? i'm sorry but i simply can't remember if it was doing this before or not... just noticed it taking longer within the last few days.

Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with your computer. I have the same issue, and it is a bug. Sometimes a restart solves it. Sometimes and if you use subtitles, you will see the first line being displayed but the second one not, etc.
I have reported that to Apple and there is hope for a fix.

Please confirm what version of OS X you are running - I doubt it is the ancient OS 10.1 !

  • Macbook pro stalls during startup

My macbook pro with Yosemite stalls during startup.  I've tried Command R and ran disk utility.  The disk is ok.  I've zapped the RAM but it still stalls about 25% of the way through the startup process.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacBook Pro Stalls/Running slow since Mavericks Installation

On the advice of the more experienced here is a new thread.
Since installing Mavericks my MBP has gone from pretty much an instant response to requests, to stalling, the spinning pinwheel, longer startup and shutdown times, as well as slower access to websites (Chrome and Safari, though Safari appears slower).
I have been advised to run EtreCheck when I first joined a post regarding the same problem.  I posted the results and was advised to work through some of the issues.  This is the initial test result and the very much appreciated advice.
NOTE - EXTENSIVE TEXT TO FOLLOW.
I don't have a specific fix from your report, but I can point out what other users have had issues with.

Red is the items I'd look at these are mostly 'system level' - they can alter a lot in the OS. Check the developers website, update or remove the apps if the developer doesn't say it supports 10.9 or if you can live without them.
Soundflower is out of date & it is a 'kernel extension', the kernel is the core of the OS - you don't want any old code running here.
The installer has a removal tool too https://code.google.com/p/soundflower/ so update or remove it if you don't use it.
Update or remove Paragon's NTFS tool, it is running at a system level & it's background jobs seem to be in a 'problem state', it also has something running in the kernel.
Adobe has an updater running, try to ensure Adobe's apps are all up to date, just incase they have stopped checking. Repeat with Google's apps, just launch the apps & look in the 'App menu' or the Help menu for updates. These companies tend to reinstall the updaters if you try to delete them, so there it little you can do but keep the apps updated.
It's odd that all your User Launch Agents: are not loaded, these are background jobs that start on login (if they are in a loaded state). The same principle applies, update or remove the related apps if they are not needed.
CleanMyMac is a concern - there are lots of posts here claiming it can break the OS - it can help you to remove files that are installed by Apple which is not the best idea. I am unconvinced that running 'maintenance utilities' all the time is a good idea, however the app removal tool may be OK for cases where a developer doesn't have an uninstaller. 'Cleaner apps' use RAM & can spend time scanning files which can slow other tasks. Search here for varied opinions on CleanMyMac. I also use ClamXAV, ensure that is upto date & so check it's engine & rules are current.
The purple items are 'user level' items (run on login of your account).
There is a simple way to see if your issues are because of 'user level' items, create a new test user account & login as that user. If the Mac is stable you can assume it is something within your 'user items'.
Check that you need the Login Items running every time you login. They are listed in System Preferences> Users & groups > select your account… login items tab.
You appear to have 3 LogMeIn internet plugins installed - is Safari behaving OK or running slow? I would consider removing most plugins & then installing them as you need them. You can look inside /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ to remove them manually.
~/Library is your 'home library' Use the Finders Go Menu > Open Folder… and enter ~/Library to reveal it. Apple hid this Library folder.
I'd be tempted to remove the Java applet plugin - old Java is a real secuity risk & Safari has probably disabled this for you already.
There seems to be 2 Facebook plugins installed (probably inside your ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/). Remove the oldest one & look for the newest release. Update the Safari Extension if it needs it too.
The Preference Panes are installed in /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/. Open System prefs & launch each third party pref pane (the bottom rows) & check for updates if possible. These also have an ability to modify the OS, so any errors could effect everything. You can usually right click (or ctrl+click) to remove them from the preferences (it removes them from the OS, but may leave any libraries or extra tools behind - see if the developer has removal instructions).
I see you have Plex installed, does this run very often? I find it can drag a Mac to a slow crawl when it is indexing. I suspect Connect360 may do similar things, but I don't really know for sure what it does .
MenuTab for Facebook seems to be doing something with RAM & CPU, update or remove if you don't need it.
That may all be daunting, but it should help. Start with the system level items, and then look at updating the other items. You may find things improve after a cleanup & a reboot.
This was extremely helpful and I have gone as far as my knowledge will allow for now.  I did make a bootable clone of the main HDD prior to doing anything, and now there seems to be little improvment following the suggestions made.  Also along the way MacFuse was deleted and well as Flip4Mac and NTFS.
Things are far from perfect though and the MBP still stalls and is performing very poorly.

  • MacBook Pro - Stall, Freezes at Random Times & Durations

Hello all, hope you can help me with a perplexing problem.
Starting this past Monday, my MacBook Pro (specs below) started stalling or freezing at random times. The stalls will sometimes last for 5 seconds and then I can use it again, other times it'll last for 30 seconds to several minutes. On occasion it'll freeze up so hard that I have to do a hard shut down. When it stalls, I can move my mouse and even select other applications which sometimes work. More often then not, it stalls all the programs and I just have to wait.
It does not seem to matter what applications are running or how many. Generally I run a web browser (Firefox, Chrome, or Safari - I've been alternating to see if one is better) with one or two tabs open. I've worked flawlessly for several hours with Browser, Word, and Terminal open, then it freezes up when I try to open something like System Preferences (or Spotlight or whatnot). So there is no real pattern when it comes to applications.
The temperature hovers around 55 - 65. RAM usage rarely tops half and CPU fluctuates but nothing outside of what you'd consider normal (i.e. it never pegs at 100% when stalled or frozen).
    I've tried the following:
    * Ran Rember (1 pass, then another 25 passes over night) - No Errors
    * Ran Verify Permissions - No Errors
    * Ran Verify Disk - No Errors
    * Reformatted and Reinstalled the OS from scratch (problem continues)
    * Repeated the Rember, Verify Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk - No Errors
    * Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    * Reset the SMC
    * Ran Applejack and all the tests associated with it.
In the Console system.log, there was an instance of unknown-dev: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5. After doing some Googling, I ended up disabling Journaling to see if that would make a difference. I was able to run for about 25 minutes before it froze up again.
Any other thoughts or theories that I could try out? Much appreciated.

If you done that, then I believe you have a hard drive issue. Did you zero-out the drive (select "Zero out data" under the "Security Options" button in your Disk Utility) before you reinstalled a new system? If not, you might try that to map out any bad sectors first, before replacing the drive.

  • Macbook Pro wont startup on an external backup

    My machine: OS X 10.6.3 - 2010 MacBook Pro
    My backup drive: OS X 10.5.5 - 2004 Power Mac G5
Problem: Backup drive boots fine into my MacBook Air (10.6) , also tested fine on another old white MacBook. But it freezes when my MPB tries to boot from it. Just hangs at a grey screen (tried restarting and holding Alt and starting up from system prefs)
Other notes: The 10.5.5 drive mounts and works fine when I plug it into my MBP.
I'm guessing there is some conflict - Perhaps something to do with 64bit / 32bit?
But how do I solve this? Will it work if I upgrade my 10.5.5 backup drive to Snow Leopard? Or is that not possible at all since everything it is PPC configured?
Please let me know what to do. It is important because all my iPhone data is on that drive, and I periodically switch back into my 10.5.5 backup to sync my iPhone.
Now I am going to sell my MacBook Air, and I'll be left with the MBP. So I need something that can boot up the 10.5.5 for my iPhone syncing.
If that can't work, how can I port over all the iTunes + iPhone data over to my MBP so that I can sync my phone again. (Previously only had 80gb in my MBA, and my iTunes library is over 500gb worth of stuff)
Thanks so much for the help guys! Much appreciated!

Well, your new MacBookPro, depending on when you bought it, may not be able to run Leopard at all if it shipped with 10.6. If it shipped with a version of 10.5, let's say 10.5.8, that was higher then 10.5.5....same thing.
I suppose you may have gotten lucky with the older Macs because the G5 probably had a universal (Retail) install of Leopard and may have enough drivers for your other older Macs to use.
But the bootup is maybe what we are not connecting on here with our conversation. Are you actually booting up on that G5 drive, running 10.5.5, using System Preferences or the Option key at startup with you other Macs?
Because accessing things on the drive and booting up on it are two different things.

  • Macbook Pro slow startup Mavericks (bootlog included)

Hello I have the following MBP:
    MacBook Pro 15-inch Early 2008
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
My Startup time has increased a lot since the move to Mavericks.  I have tried some of the fixes suggested like "Kext" thingy and PRAM reset and made sure my spotlight isn't searching constantly.  Iv noticed that there is seemingly a delay of about 20 seconds just after the spinning wheel appears where the laptop goes quiet and there is no signs of stuff loading etc.  Then after this 20 seconds it starts making the usual startup hard drive noises. i have pasted my bootlog below for the guys who understand it to browse over.  I hope it has some clues in it. Without this 20 second delay my startup time would be something about where I would be happy.  Also my shutdown is slow but thats another matter.
    Any help would be fantastic.
I Pressed the power button at 1:10:30 and the disc drive makes its usual noise then i hear the chime.  A few seconds later the apple logo appears and then the spinning wheel.  This is when it appears my official boot started according to the log.  However i pressed the power button 15 sends earlier.

  • Macbook Pro slow startup, extra slow to load dock/interface

I have a Macbook Pro core 2 duo era 2007, OS 10.6.8, with an interesting problem I've not encountered in reading other issues. Here's the system profile, to get that out of the way:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo

Other than the faulty video card that seems standard for this run of the Pro, I have never had an issue. I have just replaced the battery from the original battery that came with the computer. It was useless to the extent of the word, but my budget did not allow me to purchase a new battery until recently. The battery info only stated "Replace Now" and the LED meter no longer functioned. The battery held no charge, and the computer only ran off of wall power. Up until a few days before I replaced the battery, this provided no trouble. However, it began one day to startup extremely slowly (5 minutes or more on the Apple logo startup screen, and then more time to load dock/top screen toolbar/etc. It also failed to recognize the external HD I frequently use with this computer. My theory was that it was simply underpowered on account of the failed battery, and the internal HD or the CPU was just not able to run properly. I finally put a new battery in hoping that it would fix the issue, but no avail. My startup time seems slightly less, but it seems as if the computer has not loaded interface protocols, as the computer is unresponsive to attempts to open the dock or a finder window, or even hover over battery or volume icons. After 5-10 minutes it finally kicks in and I can use my computer without problem, with the exception of the external HD, which will still not load.
I have run disk utility, verified my HD, no errors reported. I have the activity monitor up which shows a pretty minimal load on the CPU and disk usage. Nothing I can think of would explain the problem my computer has suddenly adopted. I love the **** out of this computer though, so any help is appreciated!

Well you're having issues now!  Time to clean house!  Where did my Disk Space go?
    Slimming your hard drive
OmniDiskSweeper is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
SpaceControl is a free utility that checks HD space.
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.

  • Using MacBook Pro as startup drive?

I need to use some copy-protected apps that are on my MacBook Pro, but I want to use my Mac Pro with dual display to access those apps.
Is there anyway I can use my MacBook Pro as a startup drive? If so, how is this accomplished?
    Thanks!

Is there anyway I can use my MacBook Pro as a startup drive?
Yes, if its OSX is new enough.
If so, how is this accomplished?
    FireWire Target Disk Mode.
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661>
Boot the MacBook Pro while holding the "T" key. Connect a FireWire cable between the computers. Boot the Mac Pro while holding Option, then select the MacBook Pro drive for booting.
This will have the Mac Pro running from the MacBook Pro's drive, but probably won't run the protected software if its key is based on the CPU serial number since it will be that of the Mac Pro.

  • New MacBook Pro C2D Startup issues

    Hi,
I have my MBP for 3 weeks now and normally leave it on all the time (on and off the AC) For the most part it will wake up from sleep just fine.
In the last 3 nights I turned the MBP off before I went to sleep.
When I tried to boot in the morning the machine makes the regular DVD noise but it will keep doing this noise for 3 times, the light on the front will turn on but the machine will not start. There is also no startup chime. No video. When I pressed the power button to turn it off and then on, it will do the same.
I had been thrugh nightmare with a first generation MB so I had an idea on what to do -- I reset the PRAM and it starts fine.
This has been happening 3 mornings in a row. (I don't have anything connected to the MB other then the AC adapter.
I repaired permissions, went throguh the hardware test, took the battery out, checked the Apple website for firmware updates, and although there was firmware update 1.2 for MBP on 11/13, after launching it, I get a messge that tells me that my computer doesn't need the update.
I get all kinds of weird behaviors and the MBP will become very slugish... the highlight was today while burning a DVD in Toast none of my applications will launch, every application I would click on the dock will just bounce about 20 times and then stop. I couldn't even relaunch the Finder and ended up pressing the power button to force it to shut down. mind you, It restarted fine.
I read in one OLD thread here on the Apple forums that someone had similar problems with a MB and it was resolved by the firmware update.
Does anyone has similar issues or have any idea why my machine will act like this? I rather try to resolve it myself before I call Apple care or go to the Apple store.

    MacBook Pro C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thanks for the response.
Yes, I reinstalled the OS (clean install)
The issues with starting up in the morning still consistant.
It appears that if I shut down and restart right away, there is no issue- it's ok, but if the machne is off for awhile it will not boot on the first time.
I left my MBP off all day and took it to the Apple store after work.
The MBP will not reboot at first which really surprised the guy who claimed to be head technician. He kept insisting that's it's a 3rd party software issue, and I was saying, how come a 3rd party software will affect the booting of the computer? ( you can't even here the chime!)
He suggested that I will go home and clean install OS X again, and this time not to install anything else on it. The test is on. I did a clean reinstall. The machine will be off tonight, and we'll see what will happen in the morning!

  • MacBook Pro stalls in start-up

My two month old MacBook Pro decided yesterday to become very slow in opening applications, and as of today it is stalling during the start-up phase. I had re-installed operating software before stalling began. My primary concern is the new sound coming from the left side of the keyboard. It sounds like the hard drive is hung up. The indicator (under the Apple) shows that it's trying to boot, but without moving beyond this point. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated

Assuming there isn't something more troublesome, maintenance may be indicated as suggested by Hatter.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior. DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. However, DW is not yet compatible with Intel Macs. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
    6. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary)
    7. RsynchX 2.1 and PsyncX 2.2.1 (Freeware)
You can perform full backups (only) using the Restore option of Disk Utility.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Macbook Pro: long startup time / very slow in general

    Hello everyone,
I purchased a Macbook Pro 15” in the summer of 2010 before going to university.
The startup time has become ridiculously slow. Even opening a web browser is stressful.
I have now completed my studies and I am pretty sure I have uninstalled all the large software I had installed for my degree and deleted majority of my
document/files however the startup time has not improved.
I have been looking through threads discussing Factory resets?
My Mac did not come with a disk (Snow Leopard originally installed). I simply turned the thing on and it was ready to go.
If I was to reset my Mac to factory settings would I need to purchase a disk? Is there something else that I could do instead?
The problem seemed to materialise when I upgraded to “OS X Mavericks”.
The only software I want to keep on my Mac is Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
I have transferred all the documents I wish to keep to another computer so I do not mind losing everything currently on my Mac.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Do you know what the original disks were? Were they snow Leopard, higher than 10.6.3, they are most likely builld specific.
I can not guarantee that it will speed it up, but if your HD was pretty full 50%+ as well as your caches, it should clear a lot of stuff off the machine that can slow it down. It will probably take a couple hours to go thru this, give or take.
How much of your HD is used, I keep mine at about 20% to help keep it faster, (less stuff to search)
If it is just the speed you are concerned with I will send you some links in regards to that. I answered that you wanted to go back to "New machine" settings, hence my reply.

Maybe something here will offer help. The reason for repairing the disk and permissions, etc... is that smetimes the disk gets errors, which the mackine hen has to work around, if it can. Hvaeing your disk much past 50% will slow it down, having caches that have not been emptied and are full of junk can slow it down. Try going to  Safari menu clicking reset Safari, empty cache, also go to Safari Preferences/Privacy tab click "remove all website data.
This would be a start. read thru the links, or do a tottal wipe and install.
I hope this has helped you in some way.

  • My macbook pro stalls during software update and never finishes the update

My Macbook Pro is a 17-inch laptop purchased in early 2011. It's on system 10.7.5.  Software Update keeps telling me I need to update.
I click ok, it starts to update, then gets stalled "moving 3 items into place".
I've tried many times to do this update, but it NEVER finishes the update, just stays stalled "moving items into place" and it can stay that way for HOURS.  Then I need to go back to work, so I re-start.  What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
