Macbook pro starting problems:  on off loop when turning on

Hello apple community.
my macbook pro when i press the power button it turns on, the white light at the corner goes on, and i can hear the fans spinning,
but then immediately it turns off, and then goes on by itself again and goes off,on off,onoff.... into a continuous on off loop. the screen stays black all the time during this. no apple logo
what can this be? i tried reseting the ram chips in their socets but it did not help.
I hope you can help me.

Try starting in Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while booting. Safe mode takes a while to load the OS. After that, restart the computer normally.
If that does not work, start up in Recovery by holding down the Command and R keys. In the window that opens, choose Disk Utility at the bottom and verify and repair your disk. Repair permissions while you are there.

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.

  • My macbook pro has been shutting off on its own. The power cord "shuts off" (does not work) simultaneously. Does anyone know what is wrong? or what could be the problem?

When my mac finally turns on the date/time is reset a windows pops up saying, "Your computer's clock is set to a date before January 1, 2008. This may cause some applications to behave erractically."

  • My macbook pro (2010 13inch) is really laggy when I'm using apps like iTunes and safari. the arrow on the screen seems to not respond and is laggy and when viewing videos it can be really laggy. I just want to know if it was a problem i could fix, thanks.

    You might start with:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the above reveals nothing helpful, then create a new user account. Log out of your account and log into the new account. Do the problems cease?

Several users are reporting a server problem with Software Update. Why not wait and try again later today or tomorrow to see if the problem is resolved.
If the problem is on your computer then give this a try:
    Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
    Delete the following files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist where "xxx" is a number.
    /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)

  • Does the battery charging in the macbook pro retina automatically cut off when the battery is fully charged?

Does the battery charging in the macbook pro retina automatically cut off when the battery is fully charged? or does it continue charging? In which case,is it better for the battery life to switch off the power supply or leave it on while using the macbook?

Yes, and the pilot light on the MagSafe2 connector changes from orange to green. If you unplug, you will start draining the battery again, whereas if plugged the Mac will take power from the brick and leave the battery in a charged state.

You could just try changing your Input Sources under System Preferences>Language & Text:
But I kind of doubt that's going to work. It may be a hardware problem or a system problem. If you take it into Apple they might be able to determine which and might advise a reinstallation of System software. I would take it to an Apple Store or an AASP but, first, make sure that you have a backup just in case they suggest a clean install of the system.
    Good luck,

  • I bought a new MacBook Pro (Mac Os 10.8.4) when conecting my mobile broadband dongle (Huawei E122) the computer does not read it at all. I do not have problems when connecting it to my former computer (PC) and a Mac from last year. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
Yes, I did that. They have uppgrades for the dongles, but just untill Mac Os 10.7. Their solution is to buy a new modem from them or getting one for free if I sign a contract for 24 months! So, i think from that side not very helpful.
It is just that I do not want to buy a new modem, when it works in quite recent computers and after having spent money in the new Mac.
But thank you for your reply!

  • Macbook Pro starts up, has a small loading bar, and then shuts off.

Macbook Pro starts up, has a small loading bar, and then shuts off after a few seconds, but the Windows bootcamp partition works fine.
The repair disc option (using install disc) failed, and the computer cannot locate the original Mac side partition. Only Bootcamp appears under options to "restore from backup" or reinstall. The repair disc options says it should be repaired but doesn't seem to know how.
    Macbook Pro.
    Snow leaopard
    Bootcamped with Windows.
    Any ideas?

Hold c or option key and boot off the 10.6 installer disk, run DU Repair from there.
run through this list of fixes 1-8
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If it doens't work, you can recover files if you don't have any current OS X file backups, then grab what you can out of Bootcamp
Use Data Rescue installed on the extenral boot drive ($100) to read the bits of the internal (non-filevaulted) drive to retrieve OS X data files if you can't get them off manually via drag and drop methods.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
If you want to clone Windows, use WinClone and another drive. However it's likely compromised, unless it something you did in Windows, like trying to create a new parttition perhaps?
Then perform a Zero Erase and install of 10.6 as shown here (on the entire drive, not only the parittions), this will give a new GUID partition table, EFI and map off bad sectors, totally fresh everything.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
You cna use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the new extenral setup to the new scrubbed internal drive. Recreate Bootcamp and WinClone back or fresh install Windows into Bootcamp like before. OR opt to use virtual machine software which is safer.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
Windows 7 can write to the boot drives GUID partition map (unlike XP), this is likely why it's borked now.

  • MacBook Pro. Was Streaming radio. When came back to computer it appeared to have shut off. Now can't get it to respond in any way.

MacBook Pro. Was Streaming radio. When came back to computer it appeared to have shut off. Now can't get it to respond in any way. Now that you can't remove the battery, I don't know how to get it to quit, although it doesn't appear to be making any noise, so might have quit on it's own.  Any ideas? Thanks!

I honestly don't remember what it came with though I do remember having two drives so long ago.  Since then I've had to replace them with newer, faster ones, and just didn't really need a second drive.  I don't copy cds, I just need something to read DVDS (which the current one doesn't seem to want to do) and occasionally burn something.
I bought the MacPro becuase I am a tireless multitasker, having super memory eating programs on at all times.  Right now I am working in Photoshop while watching a movie, with two P2P programs open, two chat programs and surfing the internet, with two monitors active so I can see everything.. I can't imagine the average pc doing this wthout blowing up   Mac Pros are the ultimate computer for those that like to do a lot at once.
The speed and memory capacity of the Mac Pro make it the best computer hands down to handle a mind that can't be satisfied with doing just one thing at a time!
And six years after buying it, it can still eat the average pc for breakfast  How's that for great?

  • For some reason, when my Macbook Pro starts up, all of the MS Office applications open.  This was not happening when I first purchased the laptop, and I never added these apps to the startup menu.  How do I remove these apps from startup?

For some reason, when my Macbook Pro starts up now, all of the MS Office applications open.  This was not happening when I first purchased the laptop, and I never added these apps to the startup menu.  How do I remove these apps from startup?

By default Mac apps do not close when you close the window you were working in. Unlike in Windows when you click the top right X icon in any program is closes the window and the program shuts down. On Mac OS X clicking the X in the top left hand corner only closes that windows and leave the program running in the background. If they are left open and you reboot they will restart with the system and load a window for them.

  • MacBook Pro boot problems

Hi. Over the last few days i have been having problems with my MacBook Pro starting up. If i put it to sleep it will not wake up, just get a blank screen and if i turn it off, it will not boot. I can hear the drive spin up, the chime sounds, but just get a blank screen. The apple logo is not illuminated and the caps lock key illuminates when pressed. The only way to get it to boot is to turn it off and on repeatedly around 30 times and then itll boot up and work fine. My battery was pretty bad so thought this might be the cause but after replacing it, its still the same. Its running 10.8.2 and i think its a late 2010 MacBook?

The folder / question mark means that the system is either not on the startup disk you're using, or has been damaged.
If you can't boot from your original hard drive (you may need to press the Option key while booting to select a startup disk), try booting from your install DVD (hold C while starting up). Option will not show drives or partitions that don't have a bootable system on them (it can, however, show a drive with a damaged system that will, when tried, yield the ? and folder icon.)
You should then be able to run disk repair or switch back to your original startup disk so you can move some "stuff" to an external drive.

  • 2012 macbook pro retina display artifacts on screen when using onboard video

2012 Macbook Pro Retina Display artifacts on screen when using onboard video.
About a month ago I've noticed these strange artifacts (blocky pixelated looking) running vertically down the screen. It first started when using Safari. Then it started to happen all the time. I turned off the auto switch video in preferences, which I'm assuming forces the computer to use the separate video card and the artifacts go away.
On top of that issue I also have had the ghosting issue.
    Anyone else have this problem?

artifacts onscreen could mean a faulty gpu. You said by forcing it on inbuilt gpu you do not find this issue highlights that. Do take it in to apple for service and also tell them of your ghosting issue.
There are a few retina owners who have faulty gpus.

  • Weird 1st Gen Macbook Pro wireless problem

    Heya,
Recently i went on holidays for a week and left my macbook pro at home switched off.
Before I left it was working completely fine and would happily connected to my DLINK wireless router, as it had been for the previous few years.
Upon my return, i started my laptop only to find it was having trouble keeping a connection to the router. After about an hour it stopped connecting all together.
    Relevant info
    1) Router has been power cycled, as has the macbook pro.
    2) Router has been reset to factory default.
    3) Another macbook and ipod touch can see the router and connect fine using it
    4) I tried new user profile on the Macbook pro, as well as trashing the network prefs.
    5) I just finished doing a clean install on the macbook pro, and still no dice.
    7) I have reset NVRAM
    8) Both MB and MBP are running 10.5.7
    9) NO ONE TOUCHED THIS WHILE I WAS AWAY. The house was locked.
    10) Although it cant see the router, it can however create a network and also connect and keep a connection to another macbooks network, including shared internet.
The last one is the real strange part of this. At first i thought perhaps it was just the Airport dying, but the fact it can create a network aswell as connect to other networks create on other macbooks is a bit weird.
My neighbors WIFI usually comes up in the list of available networks, but this macbook pro is just not seeing ANY wireless networks that is originating from routers.
I just dont know what to do
I dont have the money to repair it, not to mention buy a replacement.. and i use wireless every day.
    any clues?
I have searched through the discussions, but anything similar i have found either have been unresolved or turn out to be something to do with the router.
but the router appears to be operating normally, i am current use it to write this post.

I am having the exact same problem with my MacBook and Airport Extreme. It seemed that once I downloaded the latest firmware 7.4.2, I am getting connectivity issues to the Airport. I have a strong signal, but the base station disappears often, even when the laptop is sitting right next to. Signal strength is good throughout the house, but connectivity to internet is spotty at best. My iPhone can connect to the Airport with no issues and is able to connect to the internet.
I did a factory hard reset and went back to the 7.4.1 firmware, but still am having same issues. Sometimes I have great connectivity, but more often then not, I am getting nothing. My MacBook appears to be able to connect to other wireless networks, i.e. the one in the Apple Store. But I haven't been able to confirm if any other computers can connect continually to the Airport. I have perfect internet connection through the ethernet ports on the Airport. Interference might be contributing, but shouldn't have any issue with the laptop sitting right next to the base.
Is there anyway to run diagnostics on the wireless card or the base? I did the PRAM reset, but nothing changed. I am glad I am not the only one who is now experiencing this. Very frustrating because a week ago, I was working great and have been for over a year and half.
Looking for any other bright ideas on how to troubleshoot.
