MacBook Pro startup beep

My MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) doesn't "beep" when starting up. What can the cause of this?
Thanks.

I do not have any explanation for you.  What I suggest is to run an Apple Hardware Test and see if that picks up any useful information:

I also would make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and see if the technicians will be able to find the answer.  Note that genius bar evaluations are free.
Ciao.

  • Why does my MacBook pro keep beeping 3 times. The screen is frozen.

Like my MacBook Pro keeps beeping 3 times and pausing for 2 seconds. The screen is frozen.  How do I fix this and what is going on?

That is  a RAM issue, do you have any spare ram you can swap to confirm?  Possible causes:
    a ram module going bad
    installation of incompatible ram
your ram may have become dislodged
    I would suggest:
    - removing all ram from your MBP, and reinstall it to see if that helps.
    - if you recently installed new ram, remove it, then restart the computer with  the old ram to see if this helps.

  • MacBook Pro - 3 beeps at startup - memory issue

I've searched the forum and learned that the 3 beeps at start up indicate no good memory banks found.
Trying to understand what happened in my situation. Got my wife a Macbook Pro last year. It had two 1GB Samsung memory sticks in it. I replaced them with two 2GB Crucial memory sticks (model limited to 4 GB memory). It's worked for about a year. Suddenly, the beeping and fails to start.
Tried reinstalling the Crucial memory. No better.
Tried replacing the memory with two new 2GB PNY memory sticks. No better.
Go back to the original two 1GB sticks. Now boots and working.
Question: what am I missing? I could believe the memory came loose or the Crucial memory went bad. Having trouble believing that the Crucial memory went bad and the new PNY memory is also bad and only the original memory is good, or that I failed to properly seat either set of the 2GB sticks but properly installed the 1 GB sticks.
Did something change recently (say, within the past month) that could cause 2 GB sticks to be an issue?
Is it possible something happened to the slots when I tried to reseat the memory that would cause 2GB to fail but 1 GB to work?
Have not yet tried mixing and matching to see if I can get 3 GB total memory to work, etc.
Thanks for any ideas as to what would cause this combination of events.

I believe it may be a bad/incompatible memory and/or bad seating or memory socket issue.

  • The Tale of the Beeping Macbook - AKA- My Macbook Pro keeps beeping when trying to boot into Snow Leopard Disc's disk utility

Quick back story:  about a month ago my macbook was falling and I caught it quickly, I had a game controller in my hand and it lightly hit it whilst I was catching it; the laptop made no contact with the floor, couch etc.  Upon reveling in my epic matrix esque catch I noticed it was beeping and the screen was completely black - Horrified I held down the power button for a forced power down and then turned it back on to see that it was fine, along with no visible scars, dents etc to the chassis.  Now flash forward to present day, and the macbook pro is only two months old (bought may 4th 2011) and I notice it's got some slightly irregular slow loading points when loading a browser, photoshop, etc.  I do the standard disk utility to verify the disc and it says
    "Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 537095 instead of 537096)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 161641 instead of 161640)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
So I put in the snow leopard disc to go to the disk utility within, reboot the laptop, and it goes to the gray boot screen with the dark gray apple logo and stays there whilst doing the aforementioned beep from my spider-sense catch.  Does anyone happen to know what is wrong?  Would that tiny tap from my controller when catching it have caused this problem I have now?  Is there anything I can do at home to fix this since I can't get to the disk utility on the snow leopard disk?  Will Batman ever get out of the Joker's trap?  Or am I better off just making a genius bar appointment?  Thanks in advance.
    -ZRS

Are you using the Snow Leopard disc that came with that Mac?  A gray disc that came with a different Mac won't boot yours, and a Retail (white) disc with a version of OSX earlier than the one your Mac came with won't boot it, either.
If you don't have the right disc, do you have an external HD, or can you borrow one?
(By the way, your post shows you're running Tiger; you might want to update that.)

  • MacBook Pro Startup and Display Issues

I've been having some random problems with my MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, ATI Radeon X1600 graphics). Specifically:
    1. Lines across the screen and purple boxes sometimes appear.
    2. The graphic effects (e.g. zooming a window) sometimes get "frozen" on the screen. In other words a remnant from the animation will stay until the window is refreshed.
    3. The Mac sometimes freezes during the startup process. Sometimes the login screen will be unresponsive and other times the Mac will almost bootup but fail when loading startup items.
    4. Less frequently the Mac will freeze randomly. I previously had iStat Menus installed and each time the MacBook Pro froze up it indicated both read and write disk activities.
Yesterday I decided to wipe the machine clean and start from scratch in case there were a software issue or corruption on the hard drive that was causing my woes. I completely erased my hard drive and even zeroed the entire disk to make sure everything was completely wiped out. I also disconnected all peripherals to simplify things as much as possible.
The first time I tried the reinstall everything completed successfully but the "Welcome" movie froze part way through. I then had problems running the install again. I was able to boot off the Leopard DVD, but the machine froze a couple of clicks into the install procedure. After numerous tries I was able to erase the hard drive once again and install Leopard. This completed successfully and I installed all updates.
The problems started to show up again almost immediately, however. I installed iLife and iWork and all the updates and had the computer freeze up on me again during a reboot. I also noticed that the display issues started to show up again even before installing any third-party software.
I've tried running disk tests with Drive Genius 2.1, but no errors have been reported. I've also used the freeware Rember program to run memory tests but have yet to see any errors. Sometimes my Mac powers up without any problems and once it's powered up it often stays running for days. The display issues appear quite frequently. I've using iStat Menus to keep an eye on the temperature sensors and everything appears to be normal - so it doesn't appear to be temperature related.
Fortunately the computer's still covered under the extended AppleCare warranty, but I would like to have some idea what's going on before I take it in just in case they're not able to reproduce the issues.
Any suggestions and insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading my rather long-winded message.
    Cheers,
    Tim

I took my MacBook Pro in for repair and it turned out to be an issue with the logic board. I had the logic board replaced (fortunately it was covered under my extended AppleCare warranty) and these problems are a thing of the past.

  • Slow i7 MacBook Pro startup and battery life issues

    Hi Everyone,
My i7 2.66GHz 15" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM does a couple of things that worry me
    1. The battery life is poor, 127 Charge Cycles, 6 months old. I'm sat on Chrome with one window open and it's reading 3hr 16 min on 83%
    2. The startup into 10.6.5 is painfully slow. It seems to load up the menu bar at the top and hang mid flow, just before the battery status and time remaining appear.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance! Mike

There seems to be a lot of unanswered questions floating around here.
Its kind of scary seeing some of these "issues" and not seeing any answers.
I just spent 3 g's on a 2011 mbp, and I am really hoping all the great things that I've learned about Apple still rein true. Those are the only reasons I bought one.
My startup is very slow as well.

  • MacBook Pro startup glitch

After disconnecting the HDMI cable to my MacBook Pro (Mid-2014 model) it started having startup glitches whenever I turn it on. Grey and white stripes appears at the bottom of my screen, I think they're Apple logos? A smaller display appears with the stripes and it goes back to the normal display.
Notice the smaller display on the second picture. How can I get rid of this glitch? Please help.

Please try an SMC reset and a PRAM reset:

  • Macbook Pro startup

Hi, quite new to this but since upgradeing my Macbook pro from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5, the startup process is now showing a apple logo prior to going to the desktop.
When I turn it on I see the normal, bright Apple screen with logo and spinning ring, this then stops and goes to a darker grey screen with the Apple logo before going to my desktop, it pauses there for approx 5 seconds, it never used to do this prior to the upgrade.
Everything works fine, but anyone else got this and any ideas how to stop it?
I also have the same issue with Time machine as others, used to be quick but no longer, 5 hours and still going for a 10 gig backup.  No sure if the USB sockets are slow, it took ages during the week to copy music to my memory stick.

  • Macbook Pro startup screen distorted

I have a 2 Ghz Intel Core i7 16GB RAM, Early 2011 - 15" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.3.  When I start it up, the startup splash screen doesn't fill the entire screen.  After a few seconds, the screen shows distorted colors and shapes, and then resizes and boots up normally.  Is this a known problem? Can this be fixed?

If the PRAM reset doesn't fix it, it sounds like a bad 10.8 update or a hardware issue.
Try to see if you can do a #8 here
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Make sure to reboot twice so EFI takes hold as that loads first before OS X .
You can install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, see if it's not a hardware problem.

  • Macbook Pro Startup Tone?

I have recently bought a Macbook Pro after using Windows for years. I have the Macbook Pro 13" Retina if this helps. Each time I start the Macbook there is a startup tone. Is there any way to mute this sound on startup? Hope you can help. Thanks

You really don't want to do that because the startup chime is the first piece of information about whether the computer is working properly.
Try turning down the sound volume. Sometimes this also works for the chime.
Search at macupdate.com for utilities that will mute the startup sound.

  • Please help, my macbook pro makes beeping sounds.

My macbook pro keeps making a beeping sound while the sound is turned on, does anyone know why and what to do about it?

    Hi...

  • Flashing question mark folder on macbook pro startup. PLEASE HELP

I have a MacBook Pro which I think is a 2011 version. When I startup the computer it comes up with the flashing question mark folder. I can't start it up via disc as I do not have the disc that came with the mac :( .

Di you try restarting and booting whilst holding down the command and R keys? Or even the command, option and R keys (assuming that you've a 2011 model)?
Some 2011 models came with discs as they shipped with Snow Leopard. Those that shipped with Lion had no discs. If your machine originally shipped with Snow Leopard, you can call Apple, with the serial number of your MBP handy, and order a set of model-specific discs (cost is, I believe, around $25 with taxes and shipping).
Please 'call back' and let us know if you've tried booting either to your Recovery partition or to Internet Recovery.

  • 2010 unibody 15" Macbook Pro 3 beeps after reformat

I bought a 2010 Unibody 15" Macbook Pro from an office that was closing. They had not removed their software from the Macbook and did not provide the username and password. I tried to reboot from a purchased copy of Mountain Lion and I just get to the gray apple with the spinning wheel and a repeating 3 beeps. So I booted it as a taget drive and hooked it up to my 2008 17" Macbook Pro and used Disk Utility to erase the hard drive. Then I used a purchased copy of Snow Leopard to reformat the drive. In the Target mode, it showed the installation was successful. But upon unmounting and restarting, the 15" Macbook Pro returns to the gray apple and spinning wheel and 3 beeps. Undaunted, I again started it in Target mode and hooked it back up to the 17" Macbook Pro. Again I used Disk Utility to Erase the 15" hard drive. Then I unmounted the 15" and put the Mountain Lion disk in and tried to boot the 15" from the CD. No joy! Again the gray apple, spinning wheel and the repating set of 3 beeps.
When I first got the 15 Macbook Pro, it would boot to the Username and Password screen so it looked like it had been used on a regular basis before it was sold.
    Any ideas?

Three beebs indicates a problem with RAM.  See Attached.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538
Take it out, clean the contacts and replace it properly making certain that it is seated firmly.  If still no success, get new RAM or take it to a genius bar for verification.  The correct RAM specifications for a 2010 MBP are:  204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
