MacBook Pro startup glitch

After disconnecting the HDMI cable to my MacBook Pro (Mid-2014 model) it started having startup glitches whenever I turn it on. Grey and white stripes appears at the bottom of my screen, I think they're Apple logos? A smaller display appears with the stripes and it goes back to the normal display.
Notice the smaller display on the second picture. How can I get rid of this glitch? Please help.

Please try an SMC reset and a PRAM reset:

If we look at above log i can see few seconds wasted on kCGErrorFailure. Can anyone suggest on how to remove this error from my MBP OS X 10.6.3?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the update.
Upgraded to 10.6.8 combo and still KCG errors exist.
Also i can now see new error after upgrade as below:
Oct 17 14:49:22 localhost WindowServer[66]: Unable to open IOHIDSystem (0xe00002bd)
Now sure why this error is coming and if i have to worry about this?

  • MacBook Pro Startup and Display Issues

I've been having some random problems with my MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, ATI Radeon X1600 graphics). Specifically:
    1. Lines across the screen and purple boxes sometimes appear.
    2. The graphic effects (e.g. zooming a window) sometimes get "frozen" on the screen. In other words a remnant from the animation will stay until the window is refreshed.
    3. The Mac sometimes freezes during the startup process. Sometimes the login screen will be unresponsive and other times the Mac will almost bootup but fail when loading startup items.
    4. Less frequently the Mac will freeze randomly. I previously had iStat Menus installed and each time the MacBook Pro froze up it indicated both read and write disk activities.
Yesterday I decided to wipe the machine clean and start from scratch in case there were a software issue or corruption on the hard drive that was causing my woes. I completely erased my hard drive and even zeroed the entire disk to make sure everything was completely wiped out. I also disconnected all peripherals to simplify things as much as possible.
The first time I tried the reinstall everything completed successfully but the "Welcome" movie froze part way through. I then had problems running the install again. I was able to boot off the Leopard DVD, but the machine froze a couple of clicks into the install procedure. After numerous tries I was able to erase the hard drive once again and install Leopard. This completed successfully and I installed all updates.
The problems started to show up again almost immediately, however. I installed iLife and iWork and all the updates and had the computer freeze up on me again during a reboot. I also noticed that the display issues started to show up again even before installing any third-party software.
I've tried running disk tests with Drive Genius 2.1, but no errors have been reported. I've also used the freeware Rember program to run memory tests but have yet to see any errors. Sometimes my Mac powers up without any problems and once it's powered up it often stays running for days. The display issues appear quite frequently. I've using iStat Menus to keep an eye on the temperature sensors and everything appears to be normal - so it doesn't appear to be temperature related.
Fortunately the computer's still covered under the extended AppleCare warranty, but I would like to have some idea what's going on before I take it in just in case they're not able to reproduce the issues.
Any suggestions and insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading my rather long-winded message.
    Cheers,
    Tim

I took my MacBook Pro in for repair and it turned out to be an issue with the logic board. I had the logic board replaced (fortunately it was covered under my extended AppleCare warranty) and these problems are a thing of the past.

  • Slow i7 MacBook Pro startup and battery life issues

    Hi Everyone,
My i7 2.66GHz 15" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM does a couple of things that worry me
    1. The battery life is poor, 127 Charge Cycles, 6 months old. I'm sat on Chrome with one window open and it's reading 3hr 16 min on 83%
    2. The startup into 10.6.5 is painfully slow. It seems to load up the menu bar at the top and hang mid flow, just before the battery status and time remaining appear.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance! Mike

There seems to be a lot of unanswered questions floating around here.
Its kind of scary seeing some of these "issues" and not seeing any answers.
I just spent 3 g's on a 2011 mbp, and I am really hoping all the great things that I've learned about Apple still rein true. Those are the only reasons I bought one.
My startup is very slow as well.

  • Macbook Pro startup

Hi, quite new to this but since upgradeing my Macbook pro from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5, the startup process is now showing a apple logo prior to going to the desktop.
When I turn it on I see the normal, bright Apple screen with logo and spinning ring, this then stops and goes to a darker grey screen with the Apple logo before going to my desktop, it pauses there for approx 5 seconds, it never used to do this prior to the upgrade.
Everything works fine, but anyone else got this and any ideas how to stop it?
I also have the same issue with Time machine as others, used to be quick but no longer, 5 hours and still going for a 10 gig backup.  No sure if the USB sockets are slow, it took ages during the week to copy music to my memory stick.

Yes it is. At least on my original MacBook Pro. Video Tutorials-Learning about Macs

  • Macbook Pro startup screen distorted

I have a 2 Ghz Intel Core i7 16GB RAM, Early 2011 - 15" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.3.  When I start it up, the startup splash screen doesn't fill the entire screen.  After a few seconds, the screen shows distorted colors and shapes, and then resizes and boots up normally.  Is this a known problem? Can this be fixed?

If the PRAM reset doesn't fix it, it sounds like a bad 10.8 update or a hardware issue.
Try to see if you can do a #8 here
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Make sure to reboot twice so EFI takes hold as that loads first before OS X .
You can install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, see if it's not a hardware problem.

  • Macbook Pro Startup Tone?

I have recently bought a Macbook Pro after using Windows for years. I have the Macbook Pro 13" Retina if this helps. Each time I start the Macbook there is a startup tone. Is there any way to mute this sound on startup? Hope you can help. Thanks

You really don't want to do that because the startup chime is the first piece of information about whether the computer is working properly.
Try turning down the sound volume. Sometimes this also works for the chime.
Search at macupdate.com for utilities that will mute the startup sound.

  • Flashing question mark folder on macbook pro startup. PLEASE HELP

I have a MacBook Pro which I think is a 2011 version. When I startup the computer it comes up with the flashing question mark folder. I can't start it up via disc as I do not have the disc that came with the mac :( .

Di you try restarting and booting whilst holding down the command and R keys? Or even the command, option and R keys (assuming that you've a 2011 model)?
Some 2011 models came with discs as they shipped with Snow Leopard. Those that shipped with Lion had no discs. If your machine originally shipped with Snow Leopard, you can call Apple, with the serial number of your MBP handy, and order a set of model-specific discs (cost is, I believe, around $25 with taxes and shipping).
Please 'call back' and let us know if you've tried booting either to your Recovery partition or to Internet Recovery.

  • MacBook  Pro screen glitches out, gray lines appear on it then my computer freezes and must be restarted sometimes it will beep 3 times when restarting and other times it won't. Is this a virus?

I have a MacBook Pro running mavericks. Sometimes the screen glitches out, gray lines appear on it then my computer freezes and must be restarted sometimes it will beep 3 times when restarting and other times it won't. Is this a virus, software issue, water damage, etc? An error message usually appears after being restarted. It does it all the time please help.

No Virus. You have a Hardware Problem. 3 Beeps means a RAM problem. You could try Reseating the RAM is its sockets.
But that wouldn't necessarily cause the screen to Glitch Out, as you say.

  • Macbook pro startup is slow and also word is not working properly

My macbook pro is slow when starting up every time and this is annoying.
Also, having problems with word as documents not opening all the time.
    Anyone else having similar problems?

  • 'No Entry' sign on MacBook Pro startup.

I realise this question has been asked on here many times before, but all of the solutions haven't worked and I think the problem might be that my hard drive is knackered... Ran hardware test and it's not showing anything wrong with system. Cannot reinstall operating system, think it's not recognising the HDD. I tried to reinstall the OS without wiping the hard drive and it wouldn't do it, so I tried wiping hard drive, but it couldn't do that. I tried a few different boot options that I found online, the last one I did was Command and S (I think) but couldn't send the command that somebody had mentioned, it just came up with 'Still waiting for boot file to be found'.
As you can tell by the way I'm writing this, this is all fairly new to me and so if I've not explained it that well let me know. But, I think it needs a new hard drive, but would like a more expert opinion, if anybody can help?!
If it is a hard drive problem, what are the best hard drives? I'm thinking a 1tb. MacBook Pro 13" - Model: A1278, 4gb RAM, 2.4ghz, which hard drive to get?
    Many thanks in advance!

You need to go to an Apple store, G Bar, ASAP. Your Mac SSD/Flash storage has died and needs to be replaced or the complete system replaced.

  • Why won't Macbook Pro startup properly without external monitor & keyboard?

If I connect a external monitor and keyboard to my late 2011 Macbook Pro (running Lion) it starts up just fine.
But if I try to start it up without these (or any other devices) attached, I get no display on the internal screen and the internal keyboard is ignored (the caps lock light doesn't light up when the key is pressed).
However, I don't think it's a hardware issue, as a PRAM reset seems to work (I get the second chime) indicating that the keyboard is OK. And I get a second or so of grey screen before the screen goes black.
I've tried resetting my SMC and my PRAM. The latter seemed to fix the problem once - but then it came back, and won't go away again this time.
I've also tried starting in safe, single user, and verbose mode, but none of these seem to make any difference.
I've been having some issues installing Windows (under both BootCamp and Parallels) but wouldn't have thought that these were related.

I have solved my own issue, so wanted to post here in case anyone else encounters the same thing.
My Macbook was less than 90 days old, so I booked a telephone support call from Apple. But they couldn't help. So I booked a genius bar appointment. I turned up, powered up my Macbook, and it worked fine!
Since it was working OK, there was nothing for them to investigate (though they ran some basic diagnostics anyway). But as soon as I got home it stopped working again.
Now this was really weird, so I started eliminate anything that was different between the environments - power supply, cooling pad, laptop stand...
My Macbook normally sits on an aluminium cooling pad, which in turns sits on a steel laptop stand. And when sitting on both of these (or just the stand) it exhibited the behaviour above. However, when I put it on a wooden desk it worked fine! So I replaced the aluminium cooler with a gel pad and it still worked fine. But why...?
I also noticed another difference. Once I reconnected an external display and keyboard, I found that my internal display now stayed on - whereas previously it had gone off (with only the external display staying on).
Searching on the internet, I discovered that this was normal behaviour under Lion, and what I had experienced previously was abnormal behaviour when the lid is open - but normal behaviour when the lid is closed. And since Macbooks use magnets to determine whether or not the lid is open, those who preferred the closed lid behaviour were using fridge magnets to fool their Macbooks into behaving that way.
It seems that my stand and/or cooler was acting in the same way as a magnet, and making my Macbook think that the lid was closed. So the internal display stayed off whether or not I had an external display connected. Isolating it from the stand with a gel pad has resolved this issue.
So I guess that Macbooks weren't designed to be used on metal surfaces...

  • Corrupt MacBook Pro Startup Screen

    Hi everybody,
Occasionally, when i start up my MacBook Pro, the sign-in screen background image is corrupt along the bottom and the right hand side (See images below). I can sign in no problem, then all corruption is gone. The laptop always functions perfectly.
    Any ideas?
    Paul
    Purchased: October 2011
Processor: 2.2 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)

Went to the Apple Store. I was there about 1.5 hours.
The gentleman at the Genius Bar did all kinds of hardware tests and memory tests. Everything passed.
He explained i have two memory chips (memory modes?) and the machine switches between the two, depending on the workload, and it's possible some software doesn't work well with this setup (switching back and forth). So it could be a software problem. If my screen goes corrupt again, he suggested i unclick the "Automatic graphics switching" in the Energy Saver preference pane. This would force the computer to use one graphic mode and, if the corruption stops, we know it's a problem with the graphics. (I voiced my opinion that it's unlikely to be software because the corruption occurs before i'm signed in.)
He checked the logs on the date and time of the corruption in the pictures above and didn't find any entries.
He suggested i take a screen shot the next time this happens. I told him screen shots can't be taken until you are signed in on your machine.
He wanted to take the machine for a few days. I told him i'd have to bring it back at a later date, i have too many personal files i'd have to remove first.
Bottom line, the problem couldn't be identified in the time i was there.
He did question TechTool 6's compatibility with this version of OS X. I'm certain it's compatible (i just checked), but still, when i got home i disabled TechTool's protection features … which normally run in the background. They're turned off now.
    It's wait and see.

  • MacBook Pro Startup Disk Full

    Hi,
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro Retina after nearly running out of space on my old MacBook, I transferred all my stuff over but I seem to have exactly the same amount off space left on my MBP as I did on my old one even though the Pro has more storage?
It's got 8GB of memory compared to 2GB on my old one, although it had 250GB storage, is that the same as 250GB Flash storage on my MBP?!
I'm a little confused (as you can probably tell!)
    My old MacBook: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP583

250 is 250 is 250. You didn't get a larger hard drive. You just got more ram.

  • MacBook Pro startup beep

My MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) doesn't "beep" when starting up. What can the cause of this?
    Thanks.

I do not have any explanation for you.  What I suggest is to run an Apple Hardware Test and see if that picks up any useful information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
I also would make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and see if the technicians will be able to find the answer.  Note that genius bar evaluations are free.
    Ciao.
