Macbook Pro Storage Options

What is the difference between:
Serial ATA Drive, Solid State Drive and Flash Storage?
750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm AND 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
Lastly, what is 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM on a Macbook Pro with Retina Display?
Thanks.

"Serial ATA" refers to the type of connector interface between the drive and the machine, doesn't matter if it's a SSD or a hard drive.
Otherwise known as SATA, there are progressive improvements to it's speed. SATA 1, 2 and currently new machines 3 at 6gb/s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA
Solid State Drive means a drive with no moving parts, unlike hard drives which have moving parts.
Solid State Drives are shock resistant, unlike hard drives which are not, and perform faster than hard drives, however they are very expensive in large sizes, cant' be securely erased and have limited write capability.
Most users should have at least 500GB of storage on their boot drives, 750GB-1TB if they are video media consumers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_State_Drive
Flash Storage is a type of Solid State Drive
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory
750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm AND 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
750GB refers to the amount of data the hard drive can hold, the 5,400 RPM is the rotation speed of the magnetic platters
The 750GB 7,200 RPM drive will perform better than the 5,400 RPM drive, however it might slightly lower the battery life of a portable machine, if your laptop will be used on power cord most of the time, then it's a non-issue really.
Hard drives can be securely erased, don't wear out like SSD's do and are a lot more economical in larger sizes, however the machine can't be moved while it's in operation or the heads will strike the platters and ruin data.
The best all around option for most laptop users is the 7,200 RPM 750GB drive as it will give better read performance and large storage with the ability to scrub the drive of unwanted data.
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

    Thanks in advance.

Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
Please don't use the Storage displays in About This Mac as they can be quite misleading. What you need to know is:
    Drive capacity.
    Available space.
    Used space.
You can find that by selecting your drive, then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. The info is in the upper panel:

  • MacBook Pro Storage Bug

    Hello,
I have recently bought a new MacBook Pro (non-retina) and in my laptop has 500 GB HD and i have 353 GB Free of space

    How is this Possible?

  • Macbook Pro Storage

i was running low on storage in my Macbook Pro, so i decided to buy an external hardrive to save all my video and picture files there. So i moved all files to the external drive, deleted the copies in my macbook pro, then when i checked my storage, it was still full. iv'e checked all duplicates and have deleted them as well. is there a way to solve this?

    sassycuna wrote:

Look under Disk Usage, it will show a pie chart and tell you how much space is used and free.
You should try to keep the pie chart below 50%, but not more that 75% filled.
STORAGE is taking lots of space in my mac. is that essential, or can i delete those as well, since i have an external hard drive already?
Don't know what "STORAGE " is, did you or someone else install some sort of backup program?
If there is backup software running, it could be making a backup of your stuff and account for why you don't have any room.
    i'll checkout the program now
Yes, that will help you visualize what is taking huge amounts of space on your drive.
If you copied the space hogging files/folders off to the external drive, you can then delete them on the main drive.
However I would keep two copies of your data at all times, take your time and don't rush things else you might accidentally delete something permanently.

  • Macbook Pro Storage is nothing but 'Other'

My macbook pro (version 10.7.5) is almost completely full and as it keeps reminding me my startup disk is full which causes everything to run painfully slow at times. I am very keen to clean up and so need to know what is taking up the most space, however when I try and view my storage use in 'about my mac' it shows; audio - zero KB, movies -zero KB, photos- zero KB, apps - zero KB, backups - zero KB and then 'Other' is shown to use 318.75 GB. it is very annoying because i need to figure out what to delete.
I'd really appreciate any help i can get
    cheers, Joakim

I suspect, however, upon looking at your free space, the computer is booting into safe mode because there is not enough space on the startup volume to boot normally. You need atleast 8GB of free space to boot OSX. You should have 15% of your HD space free at all times. Free up 20 GB of space. Unload large media file or archivable documents onto an external storage device or cloud based service if need be (note, you will have to delete these documents for your hardrive after unloading them, since they are automatically copied , not moved to external storage).

  • MacBook Pro - Storage Q about the "Other" category for GB

I have a MacBook Pro with 128 GB storage capacity.
    On it... I have
    20 Gb - Audio
    9 Gb - Movies
    5.6 Gb - Photos
    6 Gb - Apps
    0 Gb - Backup
    47 Gb - OTHER
    This leaves 32.41 Gb free.
My question is...How do I find out why is OTHER at 47? What is in there that is taking up over 1/3 of my storage space? How or where can I look for this, or clean it up?
    Thanks for any help.

Hi Gary, I may have a simple solution for you, and hope it's not too late.
    Try to uninstall AppTrap !
I have a MacBook Pro 15" with 16GB RAM and two SSD in it. So it can't be slow But recently I saw that my CPU was hot (70-75°C) and fans were spinning even with all apps closed. Same problem with the battery shorter than ever. In Activity Monitor I saw that AppTrap (that you have too) was taking 2,88GB of my RAM… So I disabled it on the pref panel and uncheck launch at start, and I quitted it in the activity monitor. My CPU becomes cool again (40°C) and fans stopped instantly.
I really hope this will help you !

  • Upgrading macbook pro storage

I am probably going to buy a MacBook Pro with Retina. I'm probably only going to get the 256GB SSD, because $500 more to upgrade to 512GB seems too much. I know that I won't be able to upgrade the SSD myself later, but what I'm wondering is, if I do need more storage, can I can pay Apple later to upgrade the storage for me? I have heard about people doing this through the Apple factory but I don't know if it's true. Or would I be stuck with the 256GB indefinitely unless I went with a 3rd party seller?

You're stuck with the 256GB that your Retina came with....
In the future - it might be possible to upgrade the flash storage since it's attached via daughter card....
at this time however, it is non upgradeable.....
taking it to Apple for upgrading it to a larger one isn't possible at this time once you buy it...
    good luck..

    Merci d'avance.

  • New MacBook Pro - Storage in "About this Mac"

I just got a new MacBook Pro (256 GB storage) and set it up as a new computer (rather than migrating from previous computer).  I am curious about the amounts showing up in the Storage tab of About this Mac.  Here's my current allocation:
    Apps: 11 GB
    Other: 7 GB
    Audio: 1 GB
    Photos: 900 MB
    Movies: 400 MB
I'm most interested in Audio, Photos and Movies since I haven't added any to the device nor have I synced with iCloud.  Perhaps they are files that are pre-loaded on the OS?
Does this look normal for a right out-of-the box MacBook Pro?

    Parts of OS X.

  • Macbook Pro storage filled completely by other

I've been getting the message that my Start Up Disk Is Full. So I went to About This Mac > More Info > Storage and noticed the following:
How is the possible I know I only have about 200GB of information on this computer?
    How do I fix this?
Im running Mac OS X Lion software.

    “Other” Storage
A commonly asked question is what is included in the "Other” storage category reported in the About This Mac Storage display.  Other includes everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps and backups.  In other words it includes the OS, mail, documents...  See http://pondini.org/OSX/LionStorage.html and What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It? and Apple Support Communities https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5142
    Recovering Disk Space
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files or purchase a lager disk or SSD (see below).  You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again.  More headroom is better.  If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    - Restart in Safe Mode:
      Restart the computer.
As soon as you hear the chime press and hold down the right shift key.
Be patient. Hold it down until you see the Apple icon.
      Empty the trash.
      Restart in normal mode.
    - Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
Hold the option key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
Select "Library" from the drop down menu.
        Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes
        Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
    - Empty the Trash.
    - Restart.
    - Re-index your system disk (Macintosh HD):
      http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)
    For more about backups:
    Time Machine Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:

    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Do not rely on restoring files from Time Machine; delete only those files you never want to see again.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional references on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  As noted above this will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

    Hardware — Bigger disk/SSD:
If your system has upgradeable storage then if you are still tight on disk space consider larger storage.  If you have a disk consider replacing it with a one TB disk.  Check out an upgrade to an SSD-Hybrid disk. Google "Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch".  If you have an SSD consider increasing its capacity to 240 or 480 GB.  A standard 240 GB SSD would cost from $200 to $280. See OWC and Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/ for options.  OWC sells 120, 240 and 480 GB SSD upgrades for MacBook Airs.  A 240 GB upgrade costs $265.   http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/ .  If your Mac is under warranty or AppleCare replacing the SSD will void the warranty.

Is it possible to configure a new MB Pro with a different video card or etc etc or is it just the basic options on the web site?

    Hello Elise,
The graphics card is on-board and can not be replaced. or upgraded down the road. If the graphics card is important you will have to order the MBP with the one you want
    Cheers.

  • Macbook Pro 15'' options for gaming and college

    Hi there Apple Community!
I'm having trouble choosing the best cost benefit for a new Mac. I'm a college student and my main priority is to have a mobile unit to cary with me for classes. I'm also a gamer, and since this will be my main computer I'd like to have one that could also run games like Civ 5 and WoW smoothly. Therefore I believe the best option for me would be the cheapest 15'' MBP.
However, both the price and the extra weight scare me. I'm not confortable with walking around with a R$ 6,600.00 notebook (about US$ 3,300.00 - I'm in Brazil and thanks to taxes all the prices are overrated ).
I'm studying options to reduce the risk of walking with such a valuable piece of hardware around while giving me what I need where I need, and after some time I've matured the idea of having more than 1 device.
My first option would be to get me cheapest 13'' MBA along with a Mac Mini - the one with the Radeon 6630M videocard on it. They cost together about the same as the 15' MBP, and would give me both a lighter option to go to college and a dedicated videocard for games, though this card is weaker than the one in the MBP - and I'm not sure how well this card would handle the games I want to play.
Another option would be to get myself the both cheapest 21'' iMac (with the same videocard as the MBP) and the cheapest MBA. This would be a bit more expensive than the MBP, but no big deal, and I'd still have both a decent unit at home for games and the mobility I need for college.
My last option would be to get the 13'' MBA and use the rest of the money to assemble a gaming Windows 7 PC. This would be my last resort, though. I know I can assemble a terrible machine with this budget, but I believe I could have what I need - decent (not extreme) gaming experience at home - from a Mac, even if I have to use Bootcamp.
I'd like to know from you who own Macs what you think about these options. I intent to make my purchase this month or the next, as my classes begin in August. What would u think to be the best combination? Or is the MBP the best option? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Thanks for the reply, OGELTHORPE. Refurbished products were the 1st thing I thought when I saw the cost of a 15''MBP. Unfortunately there's not even a link for this store in Brazil's store. I'm not sure, but I believe this is because of the mistrurst we brazillians have upon refurbished equipments sold by many other companies that fail to meet quality specs - some companies even try to push them as 'new' to the customers... I know that US Apple follows refurbishing rules to the letter - not hard to find people around the web saying that they got a nice deal for buying a refurbished Apple and that they would do it again. I wish I could buy a refurbished unit from the american Apple Store and have it delivered to Brazil, but I believe this is way too much to ask for the 'free shipping' they offer...
As for gaming, I do like it, but I'm not looking for a gaming station - otherwise I'd look for a PS3, Xbox 360, etc. I do want a computer to complement my studies at home - this is my main focus after all, and it would be desirable if this new computer could also run some games for me to play when I can.
I'm just not satisfied with the Intel HD 3000's performance (some people say they are even weaker than the previous nVidia models they replace). This is why I'm trying to get my hands on one of those new Radeon videocards.
Anyway I've heard that Apple may show some new products on this week's presentation at WWDC.Let's hope something good is coming.
