MacBook pro stuck at white screen right after the chime.

Hi, yesterday I partitioned my hard drive and made a different partition titled backtrack 5. I inserted the backtrack live DVD into my MacBook Withe the option at boot and it installed on that exact partition. Then I exited opted Mac sox again. Browsed the web a little. Then a little Netflix. Then I turned it off. Today I am trying to turn it on and well its stuck at the white screen after the boot. No apple logo, no world logo. Nothing. Just a white screen. I tried doing command r, option, shift. Nothing helped and there is still a DVD stuck inside and I can't do anything to eject it. So I don't know what to do. Please help. Please.

To get the stuck cd out of the sick Mac, reboot holding the trackpad button down, this should force a hardware eject.
Next your going to need another Mac on 10.7 with a Superdrive and cd's.
Your going to burn a cd of the EFI firmware, but you MUST know your exact make and model.
Download it here
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
These are the instructions how to install the EFI firmware
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
Now what this will do is put the correct firmware into the boot memory, which hopefully should hopefully allow you to command r boot into Recovery.
I don't know if this will write to the EFI parititon or not, replacing the hosed up mess there or not, you'll find out.
If you get into Recovery, your going to need to do this if you don't have a backup of your personal data off the machine.:
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive

My macbook pro is stuck at a white screen and doesnt boot. I tried resetting, tried to safe boot by pressing shift, nothing works,. It is stuck in white screen. Pls help.

If you cannot select Recovery HD at startup, problem is serious enough to take the MBP
to the nearest Apple store. They will help to resolve the issue.
Have you tried pressing option key down while starting the MBP?
Probably that has been tried already.
    Best.

  • Macbook Pro stuck at white screen on startup.  HELP!

Right when i turn on my macbook pro, it plays the startup sound and gets stuck on the white screen. I can hear it running my cd right when the computer starts up. no matter what i do, i cannot get out of the white screen. it just stays there. same thing every reboot. Whats going on???
    HELP ME!

Hi, I had this exact same problem with my 15in mbp just before Christmas. I shut it down one afternoon, and then later in the day switched it back on. It wouldn't boot past the white/grey screen. It wouldn't even get as far as the apple symbol. I tried to start it up several times, but to no avail.
I called up apple support, and they had me run through various keyboard combinations at start up. Nothing worked. According to my observations and the apple telephone operator's knowledge, it was as if the keyboard wasn't booting up at all during the startup sequence, hence it was not responding to the key combinations. There was no fix available over the phone and the advice given to me was to take it to an Apple Store to have the keyboard replaced. Living in Prague Czech Rep, as I am, there is no apple store, only one reseller, which I resolved to take my mbp to the next day.
However, before the night was up, I decided to to do one more thing. According to my (less-than-Vulcan) logic, since I was taking it to be opened up, and knowing that since the dawn of time, hitting machines has seemed to give them a new lease of life, I decided to see what a sharp thump to the side of the computer might do. It wasn't overly forceful, just enough to make me feel satisfied. Would you believe it, the **** thing started up the next second I pushed the power button!
Well, I had many weeks of uninterrupted, blissful computer use until a few days ago. If you haven't heard, quite a few mbp users have been reporting cases of unresponsive keyboards and trackpads whilst running leopard, leading to kernel panics and I have now unwillingly joined their ranks. I am in no way an authority on computers (I think that's rather obvious from my repair technique mentioned above) but I have a suspicion that my little episode last Christmas is related to the current issue of the internal keyboard and trackpad becoming unresponsive, so I'd watch out for that in the future once you're able to get your laptop up and running again. There doesn't seem to be much information as to why this is happening, but for my part, I've found that it's more frequent if pressure is placed underneath the battery, and less frequent under Tiger than Leopard.
I really hope, you're able to get your mbp up and running again. I know how utterly frustrating it is when it's not working and you have no idea why.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Stuck on White Screen and Won't Shut Down

    Greetings,
I just received a 15 inch Macbook Pro with a 2.2 i7 processor earlier today. On my previous computer, a 2009 MB P with a Core2Duo, I've had a shutdown issue on it for the past week or so: when I click the power button, and confirm the shutdown, the computer would start shutting down as normal, however once it reached the white screen with the spinning loading symbol at the bottom, it just got stuck on that. As I've transfered my old data to my brand new computer, I'm still having the same issue with it. I was wondering if this was due to a worm, or some software incompliancy? If anyone could shed any light, I'd be greatful.
    Thanks.

  • Macbook Pro stuck on white screen/Grey apple logo

I have tried all i know to get this thing back to my desktop.
It will just sit at the White loadup screen with the progress circle spinning for hours and hours.
I've tried resetting PRAM, I've tried starting it in safe mode and neither of those worked
I inserted the original mac os x disc and held down C...spit the disk back out while displaying a "?" inside of a grey folder. Any suggestions?

    Hi c,
If you can get it to boot from the install disc again (just keep trying), run Repair Disk (and also check S.M.A.R.T. status while you're in Disk Utility).
Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc>restart>immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen select the language and click Continue> click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).
If the HD has issues, it may be that the optical drive has issues too, and as iV stated, cleaning it would be a good start.
If the HD is good, it still could be the optical drive, but I'd also try running Apple Hardware Test from the install disc.
RAM and the logic board are also suspects.

macbook pro boots to white screen and a ?

    Gus@MaggiesFarm,
try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get past the white screen now?

  • Mac Pro stuck on white screen

Firstly, some details to save questions later:
    Mac Pro 2006
    Snow Leopard (latest update)
After using my Mac Pro as normal last night (no issues whatsoever), I go to boot it up today to find it is stuck on the white screen just after the Apple logo.
My first thought was that my OS drive had kicked the bucket and I'd need to resintall the OS. No biggie. So I attempt to boot from disk, holding "C" whilst booting - the same issue. Goes from the Apple logo to blank white screen.
So I try to boot from disk by holding Alt whilst loading to select drive and boot from the disk there - this time we just get stuck on a blue screen.
Strangely enough, the original OS drive DOES show in the list of available drives.
I have also tried booting in safe mode to no avail.
I've heard talk of video cards failing and causing issues similar to this, which could make sense considering in the last 6 months or so, my mac has had an awful habit of "forgetting" it's resolution, forcing me to restart it.
Can anyone else offer any suggestions?
I'd much rather avoid having to get a new video card unless this is 100% the fault with the mac.

The simplest thing your Mac can do is Alt/Option boot, because all the code for that function is in ROM. In that case, there is no Apple logo that appears, and the screen only goes to the list of available possibly-bootable Volumes, arrayed across the screen. If you are seeing the Apple logo (which is loaded off a Drive) you have not succeeded in Alt/Option booting.
Sometimes having the keyboard plugged into a Display or other Hub can cause the "snag keys" to be missed at Startup, and be ineffective.
If something interferes with your ability to Alt/Option boot, it is most likely to be the contents of your Hard Drive. If desperate, pull out the Boot drive and see if you can Alt/Option boot with only the DVD in the drive.

If you get a external USB or Firewire drive, you can hold c and boot off the installer disk #1 that comes with your computer, the second screen in is a Utilities Menu and Disk Utility.
Select the EXTERNAL DRIVE and Erase, format HFS+ Journaled GUID partition.
When that's completed quit Disk Utility and your back in the OS X installer, install OS X on the EXTERNAL DRIVE.
When that's complete quit and reboot hold down the OPTION KEY and select the External drive to boot from.
    Now GRAB THOSE FILES!!!
After that you can do what you want to the boot drive, if you can't fix it, you can always install OS X again (without formatting) and it should leave your programs and files alone. But if something goes wrong you have a copy on the external drive.
If for some reason you can't access your internal drive, either booted from the install disk in Disk Utility or via the external drive, it's possible your hard drive died.

  • All I get is a grey screen with no drives when I hit option right after the chime.

I installed windows 7 on my MacBook Pro through bootcamp. Each OS boots up fine if direct it from the bootcamp control panel... however, if I use the option button right after the chime, all that shows up is a grey screen.
Info: I just installed windows 7 as said and am using vmware to run the bootcamp partition from within Mac OS... Not sure if this had/has an effect on it. Thanks!

    Hi David,
You may want to post in the Boot Camp forum to see if this is normal:

Hello, I have recently turned on my 2010 MacBook Pro to find that it stays on the white boot screen with the little wheel spinning :( I have no discs or anything to restore my computer back to. What can I do?

First see if you can boot into your Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. If you can get there use Disk Utility to Verify and, if needed, repair you hard drive. If the drive can't be repaired, you'll need a new one.
