MacBook Pro- Stuck in safe mode!?

Hi, I am a first-time MacBook user and need a little help...
I am running lion software and recently performed a software update (pop-up screen general update). Since doing this, my Mac is now:
- Only allowing me to type in Shift Mode i.e. I cannot type '1' but it types '!', '3' becomes '£', etc etc
- Stuck in safe mode
- Will not recognise any USB's (however i suspect this is because it's stuck in safe mode!)
Any help would be much appreciated??? I cannot use it any more, and it makes me just want to get rid of it! :-(
Thanks in advance....... :-)

Try resetting the SMC - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 - see the drop-down menu on "Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own."
Good luck,

  • Macbook Pro Stuck in Sleep Mode

My macbook pro went to sleep and wouldn't wake up. This has happened a few times before and was usually cured by just holding down the power button to turn it off then turning it back on. This time that's not working though.
When I try to turn it back on only the little power light comes on and the disc in the drive spins up, but that's all the further it gets. There is no chime and nothing is displayed on the screen.
Anyone know what the problem might be and anyway to fix it? Tried clearing the pram, but that did nothing.
Hope it isn't major as I'm a month out of warranty ... plus the nearest store is over an hour away.

Well, after more searching around the internet, I found that sleep mode and bad ram make the front light do the same thing. So after my restart it was stuck in some kind of sleep mode coma, the ram must have died when I forced it to power down. Once I took out my corsair ram and threw the original stick that came with it back in, it fired up.
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • MacBook Pro stuck in sleep mode: can't restart or shut down, black screen

I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro Unibody. After installing the latest Software Update, including a Firmware update for my SuperDrive, the following problem has occurred, for the very first time:
I closed the lid of my laptop for the night, as I do routinely every night, thus putting my MBP to sleep. I leave the various apps open, usually Firefox, iTunes and Entourage. The next morning my MBP felt hot and the screen remained black... it would not change. After repeatedly trying and failing to clear the black screen and bring my apps up, I held the power button down to do a complete Shut Down. My system turned off, but did not do an actual Shut Down. When I press the power button to turn it on, it comes right back into sleep mode with the screen remaining black. I cannot seem to force either a Shut Down or a Restart. I unplugged all peripherals and the power cord, let my MBP cool down completely--for a couple of hours-- and tried everything again. Still no change: I'm stuck in sleep mode with a black screen. I've also tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, but neither works, probably because I'm not coming from a Shut Down. Is anybody else having this problem? Anyone have any suggestions? I think the problem must be somehow related to the latest update, but whatever it is, I'd like to resolve it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't get into my system to see my update version, but I'm certain I'm running the most up-to-date version of Snow Leopard and all other latest updates applicable to my mid-2009 MBP, as I run Software Update routinely. I thoroughly completed all update installations, including the SuperDrive Firmware update, followed all instructions meticulously, including rebooting, and actually used my system for at least one full day without any problems. I'd even recently repaired all permissions. Everything was "humming" along very well. This problem came totally out of the blue. Because the screen is black, I can't actually see what's on it; however, I've put my MBP to sleep every night by closing the lid and it awakens in the morning when I raise the lid. This time the sleep light indicator is on, but nothing happens when I lift the lid, touch the track pad or a key. If I hold the power button down briefly, the sleep light goes out, but when I press the power button again, the light comes right back on. If I depress the power button for several seconds, to initiate a shutdown or restart, it simply shuts off the fan and refuses to completely shut down. This is evidenced by the fact that depressing the power button to start up brings the sleep light on very quickly. I can tell by the way the system sounds that it is on behind the blackened screen. Sorry I can't get you the update versions.
    Thanks

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro stuck in clamshell mode?

I asked a similar question to this earlier, but now the problem has been more consistent. I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I often use with an external display, plugged in via mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. The problem is, after I've unplugged my macbook to "go mobile" and am away from my display, if I ever have to restart my computer or boot into Windows 7, my computer will think it's still in clamshell mode. The screen will stay dark, and if the lid is closed, the white light will stay on steadily, not pulsing. However, if I plug into my external display when this is happening, the external display works fine and I have a display again. When I look up my displays while connected to an external display while this is happening, my internal display isn't even listed in the system report; it's like it doesn't exist! And this is especially a problem now as I am away on a 3 week school related trip.
I have not been able to consistently reproduce this problem. Sometimes it restarts normally, sometimes I restart it and get the gray + apple logo screen that then goes dark, and sometimes the internal display just never turns on. The problem doesn't seem to be related to an OS, as it happens when booting into Windows 7 OR mountain lion 10.8.5. I've tried resetting PRAM mutliple times as well as performing an SMC reset multiple times, and neither has helped. This even happened when I was booting into a mountain lion install USB, as I thought maybe a fresh install would help. I've seen many other forums discussing a similar issue, but none described quite like mine.
What gives?? How can I get my macbook to restart normally? I really don't want to have to make a repair, even though it's looking like a hardware problem. My computer is one month after Apple Care has expired, and I can't afford a pricey repair as I'm a very in debt student who only has a MacBook because his school gave it to him in the first place. I would be very appreciative for any suggestions and/or help! Thanks!

    Hello thedoctor8706
Reset your NVRAM and test to see if that resolves your issues. Typically that will resolve video, volume, startup disk selection, and kernel panic issues.

  • How can I get files off of a MacBook Pro stuck in sleep mode?

A bit of a backstory: Recently my mid-2008 MacBook Pro stopped working. When I try to boot it up, the screen just stays black and the idle light flashes perpetually. I've reset the NVRAM and SMC, even attached it to an external monitor, but nothing works. After a lot of research, I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the hall effect switch.
But I digress; I don't actually need this computer repaired, as I have a second (newer) MacBook Pro I can use. However, there are some files on the old one that I'd like to retrieve. And yes, I've tried booting into target disk mode, which unfortunately doesn't work for reasons listed above.
Essentially what I'm asking is, is there a way I could transfer the files off the old computer to the new one? I know, I should take it to the Apple store, but that's not really an option right now due to personal reasons. I'd just like to know if anyone could suggest another way.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Remove the drive and connect it to your other Mac with a SATA to USB adapter. Copy whatever files you want off the drive.

  • MacBook Pro Stuck In Sleep Mode - Won't Boot

    LAPTOP
2008 17" aluminum Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard
    SCENARIO
I was using my laptop, closed the lid and took it to the office. Removed it from the laptop bag and it would not come out of sleep mode using mouse / keys. I hit the power button once (this has happened before and hitting the power button once has woken it from sleep mode). This did not help. I held down the power button for a hard reboot. The laptop shut off. Now I can't get it to turn back on.
    ISSUE
When I hit the power button to turn it on:
The SIL blinks twice slowly like it's in Computer Sleep state and then the laptop turns off.
When I hold the power button to turn it on:
The SIL blinks slowly once like it's in sleep mode, then stays solid and dim for 4 seconds, then blinks very fast for 2 seconds, then goes dark for a second, then blinks slowly once more like it's in sleep mode, then the laptop turns off.
In both instances, I can hear the dvd drive begin to spin immediately after hitting the power button. Also, when I put my ear to the laptop, I can hear the hard drive start up before the laptop shuts off.
    TROUBLESHOOTING
I've tried the following. All resulted in no change.
    - Reset PRAM / NVRAM
    - Reset SMC
    - Checked RAM was installed correctly, wasn't jiggled loose for some reason
    - Boot laptop with power cable, no battery
    - Boot laptop with battery, no power cable
    - Boot laptop with power cable and battery
    - The above 3 boot scenarios with PRAM / NVRAM reset and SMC reset

I just purchased my second fresh battery for this machine and cannot afford an entirely new laptop right now. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

Did you figured something out ? Mine, of similar age, started behaving the same yesterday. Since I replaced most of the original devices, I suspect the onboard clock battery being depleted by now... ? I'm not even sure there such a battery in there.

  • Windows Stuck in Safe Mode - mouse won't work - need my data...

New Mac User, well two months of trying to get it to opperate correctly. Unbelievable! I've re-installed XP SP2 too many times to count, finally had it up and thought it was running fine for the last week, then I went over to the Mac OS tried accessing windows through boot camp, it shut down the Mac OS, then when I tried to go back to boot windows directly, I received the damning <windows root> \system32\hal.dll file is missing or corrupt - again.
I've gone through a bunch of posts, tried a number of the instructions, and now have a worse issue, my computer is now stuck in safe mode with Windows, by instructions, here, I'd disabled everything for start up in Configuration Utility and checked start up in safe mode there too, so now I can't get it out of it, and since my mouse and keyboard won't opperate in safe mode, I get to the log in page to select user but the mouse just won't move and pressing "CTRL ALTDLT" no response.
In the Recovery Counsole when I rean CHKDSK /r this is what it came back with...
"The volume appears to contain or or more unrecoverable problems."
    97638572 kilobytes total disk space.
    90877508 kilobytes are available.
406 bytes in each allocation unit.
24409643 total allocation units on disk.
22719377 allocation units available on disk.
So what does that mean? Not sure what the " volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" means when it's not telling me what they could possibly be. Thoughts anyone?
If anyone knows or has some good advice on how to get windows back up and running correctly, and without wiping out my data - as I can't get it backed up, I would be tremendously grateful...
2 months of this is really enough, dying to use my system, and praying that I can...
    Thanks so much,
    Kitti

    Here's what worked: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
I followed the instructions above and once I finished, After re-booting, I selected Microsoft Windows XP Professional and the System Configuration Utility came up.
On the “General” tab, it shows that the Start Up Selection is on “Selective Startup” with everything checked, but what’s marked “Using Modified BOOT.INI
Tried to change it to “Normal Startup – load all device drivers and services” then re-start.
Windows came back up, but so did the System Configuration Utility and still showing that it was starting up with “Selective Startup”
Now just need to figure out how to start it up in “Normal”, if in fact that’s possible. Will keep you posted and if anyone has any further suggestions, that would be much appreciated.
I do hope this will help all the others that have run into the main issue, which I have found is caused by the Parallels Desktop by they way, not Microsoft, and that start having issues by getting the dreaded " hal.dll " file is missing or corrupt on a direct Boot to Windows.
    Very long and sleepless night….

Please refrain from using caps! looks like you are shouting.
You say that your machine is stuck in safe mode. when you boot does it go straight there?

  • I occasionally have issues waking my macbook pro up from sleep mode and have to restart the computer. The apple store replaced the sleep part but the problem is still there

I occasionally have issues waking my macbook pro up from sleep mode resulting in my need to restart the computer. I dislike all of my programs opening at once when I do get the computer started becasue it slows the cpu down. The apple store replaced the sleep part but the problem is still there. Note: i never had this problem with snow leopard

I'm not certain but my new MBA 13...when in sleep mode comes back on from a black screen when I simply click on the left mouse button. Also, one time I did a SECURE EMPTY TRASH on files that totalled more than 1GB and it took so long that the fan kept increasing in speed so I pressed on the POWER button and the MBA shut...I was able to boot up with no problem. As a rule, I now only do secured erases for trash bin data totalling 500mb or less...anything above that gets a regular erase (dump).

  • Stucked at Safe mode (windows 8.1)

It's been 5 months that my Hp laptop stucked at safe mode.
5 Months ago i tried to delete Eset Smart security from my laptop, the program said that the best way to do it is by Safe mode, so i reboot my laptop and then it asked for a password, so i enterd my normal password for every account i have, and it said it's
    incorrect.
I tried tutorials of hacking into the laptop, tutorials of passwords recovers, not working.
Because it's a safe mode, no network.
I need a solution that will leave my data in my laptop, i have pictures, works, programs, important stuff.
    Please help.

    Hi,
Which account did you choose when you logon Safe Mode? To uninstall Eset Smart, you can also uninstall it at normal mode.
How about using system build in Administrator account to logon Safe mode? Have you tried yet?
