Macbook Pro stuck on software update

I haven't done Software Update for awhile (maybe weeks), so I finally decided to update my Macbook Pro (2011 & running Snow Leopard). There were a lot of things to update as it said it was installing 15 items. The progression bar is mostly full and it is almost finished - probably the equivalent of around 98% done - but it has been stuck there for about 2 hours.
I don't think it's crashed since there's not the rainbow ball spinning just the pointed arrow, and it says it is "Running package scripts" underneath the download bar. If I also recall correctly, I remember reading something about an EFI firmware update before I clicked 'Install and Restart' to update.
Should I force reboot or wait it out? I personally don't think it's going to go anywhere waiting it out, but I also don't want to potentially distort any memory or anything if that is possible.

  • The update "MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be applied

When trying to update my new Macbook Pro with Retina through Apple's software update application, I get the error:
The update "MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be applied
The update could not be expanded, and may have been corrupted during downloading.
I've already went through the process twice to download this update.

Same type of error, but getting 90% downloaded and error message that the update cannot be saved. But it then goes to the screen to apply, but with 90% only - no instructions that it will only download 90% and the rest will come during the update - not going to apply.

  • MacBook Pro froze during software update, now it's stuck at gray screen

My MacBook Pro was running a little slow today so I did a Disk Utility repair and that went fine then I did a software update (OS X, Java and remote desktop) but it froze during the last ten percent of the update install and now when I boot up it won't get past the gray apple screen. I tried to restore Lion but since I bought this used my Apple ID wasn't used to purchase Lion so I can't do a restore.
I've tried to safe boot and boot from a CD but no go.
I also tried the short and long Apple hardware tests and those found no problems

In case anyone else needs an answer to this, I called in to Apple. Tech support said to power it off and let it reboot itself. I had to go back into updates and tell it to finish the install (restart computer, was the only step remaining) and it worked fine. It took longer because it had gotten hung up during the previous restart. ( Just to clarify, I was stuck on the grey screen after the restart step of the install.)

  • Macbook is stuck on software update

I have a MacBook Pro and I had done a software update but it is stuck on updating it's been like this for two days. Is there anything I can do? I've shut it down with the power button but once it's turning on again it attempts the software update again.

    Which update did you do?

  • Upgrading to latest Safari for OS X 10.6.8 MacBook Pro? No software updates available

I am getting several notices that my current safari browser (5.1.10) is out of date or not supported.  Everywhere I look suggests that I should be able to upgrade to the latest version of Safari through my MacBook Pro's Software Updates (OS X 10.6.8).  However, there is not a single upgrade available for my computer, and this has been the case for nearly a year.  I would greatly appreciate some guidance on how or where to proceed to get the latest browser update.
    Thanks!

That only applies for the versions of Safari compatible with Snow Leopard. Newer ones require Lion or above; alternatively, you can switch to a product such as Firefox.
To upgrade the computer's OS, pen the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • MacBook Pro frozen during software update

I moved from Snow Leopard to Lion on my MacBook Pro (2010, I think) a couple of weeks ago.  Today, I was prompted to update the software, including an OSX update -- my first update of Lion.  I'm guessing it's 10.7.1 or 10.7.2.  Alas, I didn't write down the 5 updates specified.  The update proceeded normally through "moving items into place," and has remained there ever since (3 hours so far).  I'll let it go overnight just in case...  but if it's still twiddling its thumbs, is a hard reboot a safe option?  Or do I leave it running and drive the 70 miles to the Apple Store?  Or pray to the Mac Gods?

Well...I went through the "Express Lane" to set up a case #, then chatted with a Support Guy in Tucson.  I'm now back in business, though it took about 2 hours on the phone and an overnight re-install.
    1. Hard reboot.  Mac wouldn't restart normally; reached apple logo + spinning gear.
    2. Restart + command +R to get to Utilities; chose disk utility
    3. Disk utility, Verify disk --> corrupted
    4. Disk utility, Repair disk --> repaired (but still no successful restart)
    5. Disk utility, Repair permissions --> repaired (but still no successful restart)
    6. Utilities, Reinstall OSX --> I went to sleep while it did this.  It was back in working order by morning, no lost files.
    Thank you Apple Support, Tucson!

  • My macbook pro stalls during software update and never finishes the update

My Macbook Pro is a 17-inch laptop purchased in early 2011. It's on system 10.7.5.  Software Update keeps telling me I need to update.
I click ok, it starts to update, then gets stalled "moving 3 items into place".
I've tried many times to do this update, but it NEVER finishes the update, just stays stalled "moving items into place" and it can stay that way for HOURS.  Then I need to go back to work, so I re-start.  What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • MacBook Pro and  iMAC Software update

I need some help from my Apple Junkies.... So both my MacBook Pro and my iMAC are showing that there is new software that needs to updated which are apart of the OS X 10.9.4 update combo, take it my computer is updated to 10.9.4 but in the app update section it shows I need yo update the iTunes  11.4, iBook 1.0.1 and Safari 7.0.6... Now when you look at the bottom of the updates at the "Updates installed in the last 30 days" all of the above are updated.
But the issues are: I can't get rid of that red 1 for updates (yes I've tried putting the time into the future 6 months and longer no help) and
I'm trying to restore my iPad and Apple TV which neither MacBook Pro or iMac are allowing it because it is saying unable to connect to network which clearly I'm connected to the internet... I'm using Verizon for home internet as well.
    - I've tried installing the above individually but it keeps saying calculating yet no movement left it up for over 24 hours with numerous reboots... about ready to throw both out the window..

My guess is Google did something wrong, figured it out and fixed it. The suggestions feature went away in Safari for Google, but not for bing, and continued to work in Firefox. It is all fixed this morning. I happened to be using Google when it stopped functioning, it had nothing to do with updates to the Mac, since as it went south I restarted in an earlier Snow Leopard version and discovered it was not working there either. So it was a Google action that caused the mishap, nothing that Apple did. Anyway, all's well now.

  • My MacBook Pro isn't software update

Hi there, my macbook pro(mid-2012) is not software update, every time, macbook pro is gives error ''Software Update server (192.168.0.0.198) couldn't get a response.''. I don't know what to do.

    erendincer,
it sounds as though something is misconfigured somewhere; that server address has the form of a local IP address, except it has five sets of period-separated numbers rather four sets. Five sets make it an invalid IP address; but even if it had four sets, that IP address would be for a server on your local network rather than one on the Internet somewhere.

  • My MacBook Pro froze during software update 10.9.2. What do I do?

My current operating system is 10.9.1 and I downloaded the 10.9.2 update. I am now stuck on the Installing Software Update screen that appears during reboot. I have been stuck here for about an hour and don't know what to do. Help, please!

  • HT1338 My brand new Mac Book Pro won't download the new iTunes or 10.7.4 update. I get this message The update "MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be saved. I am using a Verizon MiFi which is my only internet.

    q

I would try doing it again (running Software Update), immediately after doing a Restart.  If it still does not work, both of those updates are available as stand-alone installers.
The latest iTunes (10.6.3) can be downloaded here
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
This is the updater for 10.7.4, assuming the current Mac OS X version is 10.7.3

If the current Mac OS X Lion version is earlier than 10.7.3, this is the "combo" updater

  • Locked out of macbook pro by a software update restart

Every time I update suggested software from the Mac App Store that includes an item requiring a restart, typically a security update, I am locked out of my computer upon restart.  For years I have set my login to: my full name and a blank password, automatic.  At restart, I get stuck in an endless loop of the name and password screen, accepting my entries, 2-3 seconds of gray screen, then the name and password screen.  I can't count the times I have reinstalled my OS to solve this.  At least 20!!  It is as time consuming as it is infuriating.  I have even wiped my hard drive clean and restored my info to a new user.  Still, no love.
    Any clues?

    Eric Root,
I'll give that a shot.  It may take some time before I can verify this as a solution but i will respond.  Thank you.

  • I'm running 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro and need to update to Java 7 in order to take a software assessment test for a potential job. The Java app will only upgrade from 10.6 or higher. What can I do?

I'm running 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro and need to update to Java 7 to take software assessment tests online for a potential job. What can I do?

Apple Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10
Apple Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 17
    Apple Java 2013-005
I would suggest you upgrade your computer's OS minimally to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
