Macbook Pro suddenly slowing down

Hi, my macbook pro has plenty of space left and has been fine up until a few days ago... I never have many programs open... so... I got the instructions from another page for what to post up here, so here goes...
%user = goes between 3.00 and 5.00
%system = goes between 4.00 and 6.00
%idle = goes between 90.00 and 93.00
Page outs = 3.21 GB
Swaps used = 1.87 GB
Reads in/sec = 0
Writes out/sec = 0
(for the most part, though writes out/sec does occasionally bounce up, sometimes to 2, 4, and at highest 16… reads in/sec never seems to go higher than 1 or 2)

my macbook pro is slowing down!i was looking for drive cleaning applications bau i couldn't decide which one is more useful!

There are NO applications that will make your MBP run faster.  At best they will have no effect, at worst they will create more problems.
Start with this comprehensive trouble shooting document.

Pay particular attention to the Hard Drive and third party applications.

  • MacBook Pro is slowing down

So I've had my Macbook Pro since 2009 and it's been slowing down the past couple years and I want it back running like it should.  I recently updated to Yosemite and feel like that's the culprit.  I also ran EtreCheck so maybe someone can help me identify the problem from there?

  • My macbook pro suddenly shuts down

    Hello everyone,
I am having problems with my MacBook Pro.
It suddenly shuts down without any warning. I tried turning it on, a few seconds after the sound, it would shut down.
I read the User Manual and tried a command "press Power Button, and immediately hold down Command Option, P and R Keys simultaneously" and my laptop turns on. Sometimes it would still suddenly shuts down.
I also noticed that the mouse sometimes isn't as responsive as it used to, very slow.
I also downloaded iBoost to see if it helps.
    Hope to hear from you.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Dominic23 for your reply.
What I noticed from the link you sent is:
Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
I bought my MacBook Pro last December 2010...will this be OK if I follow the steps? Even it was mentoned for models early 2009?
    Thanks and best regards.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro suddenly slowed to a crawl

So after work today I go to startup my MacBook Pro (2011, 2.2ghz Intel i7, 8gb ram, 1gb VRAM, running Lion), and for whatever reason it's suddenly terribly slow. Never had a problem with it before, but now it takes 20 min to startup, all my apps run extremely slow, and require force quits because they take so long to close. Any attempt to perform one function in one app automatically makes every app freeze for at least a minute or two. I ran activity monitor and got nothing out of the ordinary, but something is definitely sapping my performance. About a week ago I tried (unsuccessfully) installing windows through boot camp, and when it didn't work I uninstalled the partition. That's really the only thing I can think of that'd be a problem, as I had a vaguely similar problem on my last Mac.
I should also mention that since deleting the Windows partition whenever I go to startup my computer I have to hold the Alt key to select my startup disc or else it'll try and start as Windows and then fail (giving me a "press any key to find boot disc" sort of error message requiring me to restart and hold Alt to select OSX, and when checking my partitions it shows just one section, but that one section doesn't include all of my hard drive. I tried expanding it to cover everything but it gives me an error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

When you deleted your failed Windows installation, did you do it using Boot Camp Assistant? I suspect not, but that's what you needed to do to recover the full use of your hard drive. See page 20 of this guide:

  • Macbook Pro suddenly slow

    Hey everyone,
Lately I've noticed that my Early 2011 Mabook Pro has been running slower and slower. I find myself seeing more of the running beach ball lately and not sure what has happened. I haven't installed anything new other than updates, and noticed it will run slow on startup and even with just Safari open it will start to slow down opening other apps and things. Here is my EtreCheck Data:

Any thoughts? I did a Verify Disk in Disk utilities and came back fine.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • MacBook Pro 15" Slows down to a stop

I love the new leopard system however I have noticed that my macbook pro is crawling lately. I f I restart the computer it will temporarily speed up but after going into standby a couple of times the computer will slow to a crawl forcing me to restart the computer.
The only 3rd party program which I can even potentially attribute this problem to would be parallels, however it does not seem to be the issue. Certainly my computer should not be having ANY speed issues. A problem I had earlier was major trackpad issues (occasionally the trackpad would freeze up and the cursor might even go in the opposite direction), this seems to have gone away. However the computer continues to run slowly. I am wondering if it could possibly be a hd issue? I have a 160GB hd 5400rpm.(standard but hey...)
    Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem. Leopard worked fine for the first few days, but now my computer is at a crawl. I tried freeing up a of space on my HD, but it did nothing. Starting programs, running then, shutting them down, coming back from idle/screen saver, even switching panes in "Spaces" takes forever... it makes no sense, and its infuriating. This thing carries my life with it, my work, my contacts, my college material and papers, my entertainment, and its barely functional. Granted Leopard is fairly streamlined in comparison to Tiger, but at least Tiger actually performed steadily.
Oh, and side note: as cool as Spaces is, they should have made it more like virtue-desktops so you could customize it with backgrounds and such, and not lock programs to the pane in which it was opened, that's just stupid. Not that any of it matters if the damned thing becomes the computer equivalent of a tortoise. . .

  • Macbook pro keeps slowing down

My Macbook pro had been playing up lately.  Looking at the activity monitor the Memory Pressure keeps going to red and slowing the computer down. A Safari Web
Content process keeps opening up and causes it to use up all the RAM, slow down and a few times caused it to crash. The process is https://autotrader.portal.com. How can i stop this from running? Every time it opens up by itself I have to force quit it to stop it slowing up and freezing.

  • New Macbook pro is slowing down.any ideas why?

    Hi There,
I bought a macbook pro last July and in the last week I have noticed it slowing down, loading webpages takes longer etc.... I updated to yosemite recently but I am not sure that is the issue. Could it be something to do with cache, someone was trying to download movies on it so maybe I have a small virus?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Read my earlier reply about virus.
    You can forget about virus
    You don't have one
I suggest you download and install EtreCheck from http://etresoft.com/etrecheck
Run EtreCheck and publish report here

  • Macbook pro sudden shut down

My 13' pro, bought 3 months ago, has developed sudden shut downs three times this evening.. This is the first time I met this problem. The first and second time, battery is about 30%. and then i plug in the charge, but it just shut down again. I was not playing games, just browsing some webpages and doing my research.
Is there anyone know what might be the cause?? Is that a battery problem?? What should I do???

The record starts from June 26 and ends on July 17.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Slowing down and acting weird for no apparent reason.

I got this computer in September 2010 new from apple. Macbook Pro 15", 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5. memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 build: 10J869 version 10.6.7
Recently it seems to have hit a wall (running very slow). When I try to open any program it takes 10 times longer than normal...Always beach balling. This isn't normal. I have not been running many programs besides firefox and itunes lately. And The occasional Word Processor document. Sometimes when I type the computer will go very slow letter by letter. (it takes a few seconds to type one word) Also, sometimes it will work normally. I haven't had any weird error messages. Although, just a few minutes ago I was in Firefox and the words at the top of the screen vanished. (File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools Window-----all disappear)
Please help, the computer is not very old, I don't understand why this is happening.

A slow computer can be caused by a multitude of issues. The first thing I'd try is to check in Activity Monitor (Application - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and run it while you are doing your normal computing, what I'd recommend looking for are 2 things:
    1. Look to see if there is an application or applications that is taking a lot of %CPU. For example if you noticed FireFox or iTunes using 85% of your CPU that is a huge red flag something is wrong.
    2. Next click the System Memory tab towards the bottom and see how much FREE RAM you have during normal computing. If it's 500MB or below then your system is starved for RAM.
Report back what you find and then we can test some other items.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 slowing down

I have had my MBP for almost a year now.  It seems to be slowing down.  I have 4g ram, 500 gig 7200 rpm hd, 2.4ghz processor and am running OSX 10.6.7.  I use my MBP quite frequently using programs such as Microsoft Office 2011, iPhoto, iMovie and several others.  I partitioned my hard drive so I have 350 gigs on the MAC side and 150 gigs on Bootcamp. I am a recent convert from Windows and I know that there are defrag programs for Windows and utilities to "clean it up" and speed it up.
Are there programs available for Mac to do the same thing?  I am having more and more problems with iMovie and iPhoto slowing down considerably.
    Any suggestions?

  • Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists

My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet.  Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
    Any advice is appreciated!

    Melophage,
I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga  whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!

  • MacBook Pro unusably slow while copying files over network

I have a 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo running at 2.33 ghz. I have a gigabit ethernet connection to my 1TB Time Capsule (which also provides my wired and wireless network services). However, when I copy files to the Time Capsule (simply drag and drop copy OR Time Machine backup) my MacBook Pro suddenly slows ways down and becomes almost unresponsive to the mouse--kinda like the network copy is taking up all the computer's resources. I move the mouse and maybe 10 seconds later the mouse pointer jerks across the screen and then stops. I literally can't do anything on my computer until the file transfer stops. This also happens when I copy to or from other Macs on the network.
It also happened before I switched to using the Time Capsule...i.e. when I was using a LinkSys router.
    I'm running OSX 10.5.2.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to where I should be looking for possible solutions to this problem? Or is this quite normal? (surely not!).
    Thanks in advance.

Kappy: I think it's only 100mbps because Network Utility says 100mbps, and the router is (to the best of my knowledge) only 100mbps.
mindaugas: Thanks for the reply. I dont think the ports on it are gigabit as you said (source: http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/linksys-wrt160n/4505-3319_7-32815481.html "The Linksys WRT160N doesn't support the faster Gigabit standard for wired connection, nor does it have USB support"). Anyway, don't think it's overheating, since I'm not having any problem with resetting or dropped connections, just slow. Still, I'm starting to think it can't be much else other than a problem with the router somewhere. Taking it back isn't an option, but maybe I'll stick with it as long as possible and get a better router soon.
Just a thought, could this be anything to do with 802.11g devices connecting to the router as well? Or does this not matter? (Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm no networking expert)
