Macbook Pro to AVR receiver.

Hi, I connected my laptop with a mini DVi to HDMI converter, then HDMI cable.  I get both video and sound.  The sound, however, is a second or so slower when I play movies/DVDs.  Sound is fine elsewhere (ex. youtube).  Any ideas on why this is so?  Thanks much!!

Thanks for the response Baxter.  I am running the movies through VLC player.

You will need an application like Airfoil for Mac to be able to stream any audio files on your computer to the AirPort Express.

You need to purchase an external drive and start moving some files to it or you can try trashing some files that you no longer need.
Download OmniDiskSweeper and see where your larger files are... you can move them to an external drive or trash them: it's up to you.
I would also begin, since it's obviously don't have backups, a backup scheme or two. See Most commonly used backup methods.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook Pro to AV receiver

I want to connect my Macbook Pro to an AV receiver under the following conditions.
Please help on how and with what cable I can connect to play video/audio through my receiver.
    1) My Macbook Pro only has a DVI output, and of course a regular audio output.
    2) I have a DVI to 15-pin (male) adapter which came with my Macbook Pro.
    3) My AV receiver is Denon AVR-1905, an older model without HDMI but has a few optical inputs.
    4) The receiver also has a regular RGB inputs.
    Thanks in advance.

The MBP has optical audio output. You can connect an optical mini adapter to the audio output jack. You may have to go into Preferences to enable digital audio output.

  • How do I get audio from my macbook pro to my receiver with higher quality than the headphone jack?

I recently got a receiver and surround sound speaker system.  The quality of the audio from the CD player connected to it is far beyond the quality of the audio that comes from the MacBook pro via headphone jack to RCA connection.  This was confirmed by burning a CD from the MacBook, placing it in the CD player then testing the two against each other  -  the same audio piece from the CD player or the MacBook, both connected to the same receiver/speaker set up.  What other options might get better audio quality from the MacBook to the receiver?

The Mac's audio output doubles as a optical Toslink stereo mini jack, just use a adapter to regular Toslink and plug the optical cable to your surround sound system. Fiddle with the sound settings to enable optical output.
Mac's pass surround sound through, they don't do any processing.

  • Macbook pro - onkyo AV receiver... best connection for optimal sound?

was curious what the optimal connection would be from my macbook pro to my AV receiver. the receiver is an onkyo HT-R640 with HDMI and digital optical connections. thanks for any advice!!
    cheers.

Well as of now since the macbooks dont have HDMI, the way to get the best quality audio is over optical.
Head over to www.monoprice.com and search there for the best deals on high quality cables.
What you want is a mini-toslink to regular toslink cable.

  • Macbook pro Mail "Send & Receive"

when i send an email using Macbook pro Mail OS X Mavericks a second copy is created (a duplicate) and both emails are filed in the sent folder.
The second copy is identical to the first one except sometimes is a bit bigger in size. (like for example 10KB and 11KB).
But the recipient only receives one copy. Thank you for the support.

What were the results of taking the steps under the heading "Mail Connection Doctor shows all green dots in the Status column" in the support article?

  • TS1503 After an update on my iPhone 4, (I updated using my MacBook Pro) I first received the message, iTunes was not able to load all of iTunes library back on your phone, not enough free space on your phone. (not an exact quote, essentially the same mean

The complete iTunes library was already on my iPhone 4. Why would it all not go back on? It left out around 4 or 5 songs from my play list. How do I get them back on my iPhone?
Note: All software on both devices is up to date.
Then, I tried to sync my iPhone to my MacBook Pro. I got the message, cannot sync your iPhone because there is not enough free space in the iTunes library (not exact quote, but same meaning).
I researched how to get more free space on my phone which might 'supposedly' alleviate the above issues. I removed some less used apps, and some photos and videos from my phone. Then, I tried backing up again. I still got the message there wasn't enough free space on my phone, and the missing songs from the iTunes library were not returned to my phone. I gave another try at syncing my iPhone. I still got the same message that the phone couldn't be synced because  there wasn't enough free space in the iTunes library.
Any suggestions on how to remedy these problems will be appreciated!
BTW... I read a suggestion on the internet to restore my phone (I did  this recently when something went wrong during a phone update and the whole process went 'hey-wire', shutting down before the update was complete. However, at that time, all of my songs and apps were still on my phone and stored in the iTunes library.) If I restore my iPhone now, will the apps and songs no longer on my phone be lost?
Sorry there are so many questions within the same 'New Discussion' thread I'm starting! But, I think all of these issues are somehow related.
    Thanks!

I Have fumbled all day to this resolved, I'll run the battery down and see what happens afterwards. This is not good !

  • Messed with user acct name & now can't use new MacBook Pro I just received!

I ordered a MacBook Pro 17" i5 for my sister off eBay that was only about 2 months old and seemed brand new. When it arrived this week I charged it up and then began tweaking the prefs and parameters for her, including some custom things and attempting to set up personal accounts for both of us. Since it was not brand new I didn't have to go thru the usual welcome & set-up process. The seller had a generic name "macuser" as the sole user account with no password. When I went to set up the user accounts in the system prefs pane, I foolishly changed the user name from "macuser" to my chosen personal name. It confirmed all was changed successfully, but upon logging out and then attempting to restart it just hangs on the gray apple startup screen indefinitely. In hindsight, I realize I should've created a new user name and then logged in under that and only then deleted the original "macuser" name (although I'm not sure why it let me change the current one "successfully" if that was going to be an issue). I could've duplicated the user folder, named it what I wanted, then when I went to create the new account in system prefs it would ask me if I wanted to use that folder for the new name that it found.
The seller did not have or include any of the restore/install DVD's and I don't have a copy of Snow Leopard (still using Leopard on my MacBook Pro 15") to boot it up with. I'm sure it has to do with directory issues and the system now confused by the new user name created from the old one in this unclean, sloppy way. I tried rebooting in "safe mode" but that is not working (progress bar but still hangs on gray startup screen). Then, I thought about hooking the two MB Pro's together via FireWire and booting the new one up in target disk mode. I was able to access the files this way, but obviously I couldn't change anything via the system prefs of the new MB Pro while in target disk mode. The only thing I could possibly think of was to change the user name on the home folder back to "macuser" in case the computer was looking for that. To be safe I even duplicated that folder and renamed the duplicate with the personal name I had first switched in the system prefs pane (causing this mess). I figured if it had two duplicate user folders, one with each name, I could cover my bases. It would recognize one at least, whichever it was looking for: the original I changed sloppily and/or the new one that I replaced it with and was now registered in system prefs. But unfortunately, that still didn't work.
I was supposed to deliver it and set her up this weekend, but the DVD copies the seller made upon my request were sent out yesterday and probably won't be here until next week. I even thought of logging in as "sudo" or root user, but everything I've read about that seems to indicate you must first set some parameters on the computer to do that before restarting, which of course I cannot access it to do. I'm in quite a pinch, so any ideas I have not thought of would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Apparently the seller gets these wholesale in bulk (maybe at a discount since they are not brand new but still under original warranty and show that they are only a few months old). He said "they didn't send him any this time", but yeah, At the very least I should've gotten those DVD's with it. Maybe I'll ask him or look into securing the originals from Apple.
So is there nothing I can do until I get the discs?

  • How to output sound from MacBook Pro to stereo receiver/amplifier?

Does anyone here know what I would need to buy to send audio from my MacBook Pro to an external integrated stereo amplifier? I'm sure there's something. I'd like best quality so if you know of a USB solution please let me know.

Typo above, 'headphone port' not 'headphone post.'
Glad to help, and thanks for the !
FYI, the mic port is the same, so if you have a need to get digital audio into your MBP, the mic port will do that as well as analog.
The headphone port actually does triple-duty, in that it's both analog and digital out, and with the longer plug found on the iPhone headset, the headphone port can also function as an analog input.

  • Will my macbook pro retina display receive maverics

I just got a MacBook Pro Retina Display, and i got it open box at bestbuy, and I was thinking that it would get OSX Mavericks, please tell me if it would fast.

Mavericks has not been released, and will not be released until the fall. When it is released, you will need to purchase and download it from the Mac App Store.

  • ICal on MacBook Pro will not receive dates from iPhone, but iPhone will receive dates from iCal on MacBook

I recently got a MacBook Pro after having an iPhone and iPad since last year.  I have iCloud set up on all devices to share calendar dates.  However, when I input an event on iCal on the MacBook everything is fine and the event shows up on my iPhone and iPad calendars, but when I input an appointment on my iPhone, it will not update to the iCal on MacBook.
    Help please?

First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

Check that your phone settings are not set to remove messages from your server after downloading.

  • Refurbished Macbook Pro 1.83 received May 12 - Great!

    Hi All:
I realize there are many having issues with their Macbooks, and I was on the fence about purchasing one for a long time. I know there are many reading these forums and are thinking "Should I buy one?" I was one of these folks until I made the jump. I was wondering like many of you, if I buy a refurb 15" for $1699, will it arrive looking and feeling new?
First, I can tell those of you who are thinking about saving a few bucks and going with the refurb that this is a good move, at least from my experiences in the past. My Macbook 15/1.83 arrived looking brand-spanking new and all hardware works as expected. No scratches, no case issues, no screen issues, etc...beautiful. I have ordered refurbs before from Dell and IBM and they looked used. My new Macbook Pro looks gorgeous. Mine arrived 5 business days from order from the Apple site in a decent box, with all accessories included.
All hardware has checked out fine and is in working order - no pixel issues, keyboard issues, battery, cd/dvd drive, etc...
I am still monitoring the heat issue, so I won't comment on that here just yet. I use 3 other laptops in various work roles so I am well used to laptop heat issues in both Macs and PeeCee's. In fact, I removed some small one inch fans from a dead rack server I had and wired those to a USB cable with a small custom case I made and use those to cool my laptops when using them for extended time. I regularly see 20-30 degree differences in temperature by "manually cooling" myself. I know many of you will say this is not a solution to a hot laptop that should not run this hot to begin with. I'm not arguing that certainly, just sharing my own methods for what they are worth.
I do use a Linksys cable router WRT54G and when I first joined my Macbook Pro to the network with a static IP, I experienced the network-wide freeze. I changed my security to WPA Personal and have not had an issue since.
So far, VERY happy with my purchase. I was upgrading from a Powerbook 12" 1Ghz as my primary home laptop and this is much much improved. I also have various PowerMac G4's around and a 17" 1Ghz in the house for comparison.
Anyway, this posting is for the benefit of those thinking hard about buying a new MacBook Pro, and/or thinking of a refurbished unit. My experience has been solid and I feel like a found a great buy. I used the money saved to plop in more RAM and grab some accessories.
I hope the others in this forum find resolution to their various issues.

Hey thanks for posting this - I know this is a site for problems and seeing so many does make me doubt my upcoming 15" MBP purchase. But it's nice to see a positive review every once in a while and I know there are probably more sucess stories than problems. Thanks again.
