Macbook pro to tv hookup

I am trying to watch a movie on my tv via hdmi hookup on my '11 macbook pro. I've got the necessary hookups to convert to hdmi and the sound is coming through my tv. But my tv is only showing the default "space" background and nothing else. How do I make it show the video?

Because you can see the Mac's desktop image on your TV, the HDMI connection is working.
I noticed that since the LION upgrade, the MacBook Pro will not display a movie on the TV if I choose full screen mode.
If you are trying to watch in full screen mode you'll have to exit that to get a window. Then, if you have the window on your Mac screen, you should be able to drag it to the TV screen. Then drag it to enlarge the window as big as you want it. But don't coose full screen mode again.

    Hi S,
Run optical/Toslink from your MBP's audio out port to your receiver, then connect the sub to your receiver.

  • 2007 Macbook Pro hookup to TV

Hello fellow apple users. I know this has been asked before and I have read through most the disscussions but I still can not figure this out. I am looking to hook up my 2007 Macbook Pro (2.4 Ghz 15 Inch Screen) to my sony bravia 32 inch TV. Seeing how this particular model of macbook pro, although very hardy and has lasted me through now, the screen at the bottom is cracked and will probably at some point snap (annoying...).
Anyway! Just a note to start, I no longer have my original display adapter that came with my computer, it was lost at some point in the move out of my parents house and I do not remember what the hook up is. I purchased an SVGA moniter cable from radio shack since I can hook that up to my TV. I then went to the PX here on base and purchased a mini display port to VGA adapter for my computer, but alas I do not have this hook up on my computer (although the vga adapter end works, obviously).
This is what I'm assuming I need...can I get this to vga adapter?
These are my other ports...can I use any of these?
Any help that can be given will REALLY ease my mind as this has frusturated me for about a month now and the nearest Apple store is 3 hours away. Thank y'all!

I'm thinking I will try out that first link. That seems liek it would work since my TV also has an HDMI hook up. THANK YOU THANK YOU...I can't say it enough, this has been quite the annoyance and you may have just solved it!!
You may not be happy with that NewerTech cable because it's 24AWG cable meaning it's fairly thick and not as flexible as thinner 28AWG HDMI cables you can get.  I recommend the following:
DVI-D Single Link Male to HDMI® Female adapter
28AWG HDMI High Speed Certified Male to Male Cables
Not only is there a wider selection of the thinner more flexible 28AWG cables the combination of cable and adapters is cheaper than the NewerTech.
I have a 15' 28AWG and it's much easier to string around the room and cram (bend) into a corner.

  • What do i need to connect my macbook pro to my samsung widescreen tv?

My Samsung Widescreen TV has a hook-up (15 pin connector/serial port?) for a PC. What do I need to do to connect my MacBook Pro to it and can I use the TV as the monitor or for viewing an internet website?  I'm trying to use the larger screen for a meeting of several people to discuss website improvements?
    Thanks

If you can tell me whch TV & MBP you have i can give you exact cable part numbers and settings but short of that i'll try & see what i can do for you. Older MBP do not support audio over the HDMI & by default VGA doesn't either so will need an audio cable in addition to the video regardless which input you use. aparently newer MBP Do support audio over HDMI so as long as your TV does also you're a one cable hookup. My Samsung has a specific HDMI port labled DVI/ HDMI which accepts a cable i got at the apple store & simply plug  play. Look in your samsung manual to verify what resolutions the TV suppports, select the input & mode from your menue and set the resolution & you should be good to go. Obviously you'll need to do a little tweaking inorder to optimize the screen but assuming you're familliar with your mac to begin with it's a no brainer. you might not be able to run optimal resolution on the TV untill you close the lid (clamshell mode) on the MBP which means you need a key board & trackpad or mouse. on the other hand if you are attempting to mirror the displays or use it as a 2nd display those modes are also available from the MBP setup. you can detect & gather your screens & calibrate the screens right on the MBP (under dispalys) and once you have the TV reckognizing the input it's nothing but a monitor. now all of the above assumes you are NOT running Lion as i'm NOT. I hope this at least gets you in the ballpark.

  • Connecting MacBook Pro 13 inch to external LCD Display

I just got a new MacBook Pro 13 inch without retina display.  I noticed the retina display comes with an HDMI port, but the one I got does not.  It has the newest update to OS X Mountain Lion.  The best external connector I could find was the Thunderbolt connector, but the TV I have is HDMI.  So I went to Amazon and bought an HDMI Cable and a. HDMI-to-Thunderbolt Connector.  I can now connect my MacBook to the TV, everything show up, but it's a little touchy with sizing.  Does anyone know how to fix the sizing of the external screen, so that when i go full screen on the TV, the edges of the window are past the edges of the actual display?  Right now, I can't seem to figure it out.   Maybe I should try a different hookup?

Update:  turn out, i figured out the sizing issues, it seems to be filling the screen perfectly now.  But when i go full screen on one display, the other screen goes fullscreen on a gray screen.  I can swipe between fullscreen apps, just like in a single display situation, but when i do, both screens switch.  Is there a way top display one full screen app on the moniter and have the regular home screen display on my actual laptop?

  • Macbook Pro using Thunderbolt   DisplayPort adapter doesn't recognize monitor.

So I've got a curious situation here. We ordered 3 new 13" MacBook Pros Retina (2013 model) and we were testing a cable hookup with a co-workers 13" MacBook Pro Retina (2012) but it doesn't seem to recognize the Monitor as being connected.
    The setup is as follows.
MacBook Pro --> Thunderbolt Cable (plugged into thunderbolt I/O) --> Mini DisplayPort to Displayport adapter (Link) --> Dell Monitor w/ Full sized DisplayPort Input.
But when we try pluggin in a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable (like this: Link) it recognized just fine and works as expected. The obvious answer is just to get the cable that works. But sadly, we've already ordered the Thunderbolt cables and adapters....
Is there something I'm missing or am I stuck having to tell my boss we need to buy even more cables?
    Thank you.

  • Connecting my macbook pro to a hp laptop

so, i'm wondering if I can hookup my 2012 macbook pro to my hp laptop to use the hp as a second (duel) screen.   I'd like to be able to work on my macbook and have access to two screens at the same time to make my line of work easier....  I've been reading about these mini-DVI to VGA adapters but i'm not sure how or if they are what i need and if they will work.  it looks like i have to buy the mini-DVI to VGA adapter and than buy another VGA cord to go from the adapter to my HP laptop?  is this correct?  I don't wanna order everything if thats not going to work...
thank you to anyone that can help, i'm still relatively new to the mac world and will never go back.  unfortunately for the mean time i still have ALOT to learn

-edit: will these wires also work the other way around? (just in case because anymore I hate using my HP)
    Message was edited by: arabseamonkey

Yes, if you can convince the HP to behave like an overhead projector.
The Mac will gladly send it whatever signal it needs: VGA, HDMI, DIV-X, whatever. Just need to purchase the appropriate Thunderbolt adapter and cable.
The other way around? No. The Mac will not deign to be reduced to a life of "backup monitor".

  • How can I run a 27" Apple Cinema Display and another monitor from my MacBook Pro?

    Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a brand new 15"  MacBook Pro to replace my old one. I was told when ordering it that I would be able to hook up two external monitors to it using the Matrox DualHead2Go hardware. So, I also bought a 27" Cinema Display (non-Thunderbolt since it wouldn't work with the DH2Go). However, when I contacted Matrox they said their products don't support screens as large as the 27" ACD.
    Bummer!
So, my question is: does anyone know how I can hookup a 27" Apple Cinema Display at 2560x1440 and a Acer 22" monitor at 1685x1050 (or, anything less really) to my new MacBook Pro?
I've looked around and haven't been able to find a good answer.
    Thanks for your help!

Will something like this work? A USB to VGA adapter? Can I use this at the same time that I have a Cinema Display plugged into the Mini-DVI port and will they both work at the same time? Anyone know?

  • Two mighty mouses, one macbook pro.

I have a wireless mighty mouse for home. Sometimes lately when I take my macbook pro somewhere, I noticed I have forgotten my mouse. So, I splurged and bought a 2nd mouse to leave in my case so I never have to remember to bring my desk one.
Well, it's not working as planned. I have to re-sync them (or whatever the term is...). I use the one in the bag all day, shut it off. Go home, start up mac, and now my desktop one doesn't work. It's really very, very annoying and time consuming to do this every time.
I did a quick search here, but just didn't see any definitive answers on why you can't use two (or more) wireless mice with one computer. Each has a unique hookup, so it should work fine.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello syn:
This is from the Bluetooth help database:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Bluetooth/1.0/en/blu24.html
If I read the last bullet correctly, you are trying something that Apple says you should not do (the why, I do not know).

  • How do i connect a cinema display to macbook pro

I got a hand-me-down cinema display from my work for hookup to my macbook pro - there are 4 different connections attached and I don't know what goes where.

You can connect to a Thunderbolt port with
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/B/mini-displayport-to-dvi-adapter>
    or the HDMI port with
    <http://www.startech.com/Cables/Audio-Video/Video-Adapter/HDMI-to-DVI-D-Video-Cab le-Adapter-M-F~HDMIDVIMF>
If the display uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
you will also need a DVI to ADC adapter.

  • MacBook Pro won't detect network printer Canon MF4150

I have a multifunction printer, Canon MF4150, hooked upto a PC Desktop and I have enabled printer sharing. The printer is detected and works fine on my PC Laptop. However, when I try installing it on my 13" MacBook Pro, the **** thing won't show up. It doesn't show up under the Windows category of Print and Fax so I tried to set it up the way Apple has suggested in their support section. It asks you to go to advance and input the IP address and location of the printer and then select the printer driver. I would post the link but I conveniently can't find it right now. The printer driver is obviously not listed on the list, so I go to the Canon website and download a mac version of the driver and install it. When I check to see if it's on the list now, it says MF4360-MF4390, but not MF4150. I thought I had installed the wrong one but I downloaded and installed it again, and I got the same problem. Anyone have this printer or have a similar problem? Another way to hookup this printer would be much more convenient, is there anyway that the Window tab could detect it? Any help is appreciated!

The warranty must be close to running out. Take it ASAP to the Apple Store or AASP and have it checked.

  • MacBook Pro retina display goes black while outputting video through HDMI to external monitor??

I frequently connect my MacBook Pro to my 42inch Panasonic TV to watch movies/videos. I use VLC media player for all my playback. The problem I'm running into is that when I put VLC media player into fullscreen mode on my external display, my retina display goes black (I can still see the finder bar at the top and when I mouse down the dock appears but the rest of the display shows all black. If I click on Safari it will open but I can't see it on my MacBook display unless I take the external display out of fullscreen mode.
I would still like to be able to do things on my MacBook while video is playing. I've played around with the display settings but they're pretty limited and I can't figure out how to get it to work the way I'd like. I've seen people having up to 3 or 4 displays hooked up, I'm just trying to hookup one. I would consider this a severe limitation of OS X if I'm not able to separately manage the displays. Hopefully there is a setting or something I'm just not seeing. Thanks.

Yeah, fullscreen mode still doesn't play nice with multiple monitors. The common workaround is to stretch the window out to the edges of the screen instead of using actual fullscreen mode.
