MacBook Pro to TV-- how well does it work?

The recent announcement of tv.com CBS's streaming of old TV shows (90210, Star Trek, MacGiver, etc.) for the iPhone got me thinking about how to connect the MBP to a TV.
I've found out that there's a $19 adapter (hmm... should look again at how long the cable is), which is peanuts for trying this, but I'm wondering how well it work.
Any comments? We have an old 20" JVC tube TV and a 20" Zenith LCD TV, neither high-def, neither digital, both take RCA composite cables, so I assume that's how I'll hook up the video/sound.
But, am I going to get audio/video glitches, poor streaming (ISP dependent no doubt), restarts, etc.? Or does it generally work OK?
Note: this is a duplicate post. It was pointed out that this was the better place to post this message!

There are two factors here. The speed of the computer, and the speed of the Internet. You already acknowledged that Internet speed is ISP dependent, and that's true.
I have no problem watching standard definition even off of a slow DSL. However, frame rates are rather stuttery if I use my old G4 PowerBook. If I'm using my MacBook Pro, the experience is good enough that you forget you're watching the Internet (don't forget to click the Full Screen button).
Things change if I click the HD button on the site. This seems to be bandwidth dependent. My home DSL can't keep up, and it stutters. If you want to watch in HD you should have a nice fast cable or fiber connection. The MacBook Pro should have no problem playing back HD streaming if the Internet can feed it fast enough.
The TV connection part is not a problem. Even the old G4 can do it. Video is routed via DVI>HDMI to the TV, while audio is routed from the laptop into my stereo for nice sound.
TV sites are very dependent on Flash and JavaScript, and are very aggressive about making sure you see the ads embedded in the shows. The more you use ad blockers etc. like Firefox's NoScript or AdBlock, the more chance a TV site will not work right.

  • How well does windows work?

How well does windows work on a Mac? I am thinking of getting a mac book pro and I would want to use the MAC OSX most of the time but sometimes on the road I will need to use windows for work. If I install windows also how well does it work?? Have you had any problems?

Lots of questions! I'll do what I can, I am newish to Macs and not an IT expert.
I use a MacBook when out and about, it seems fine, better when I upped the ram and HD. I'm not sure whether "better" is the right term. The pro's bigger screen and keyboard may be useful - your choice. The MacBook is my choice because of weight and price, I'm not sure what to get next time. I think I prefer portability for travel and Mac Pro power for deskbased work. The graphics driver would be the deciding factor for Cad etc for me. Not an issue so far and it's a 2 year old MacBook.
I did put a new hard drive in, the partitions were too small. A 250gb drib=ve is MUCH cheaper than a new machine, simple to install. I allowed the max XP partition at 30gb (FAT).
AV - antivirus software for XP - essential to keep clean files.
Leopard - run BootCamp and follow the instructions. It will tell you when to insert the XP disk etc. Mine was choosy about the XP version, you need a recent one. Early SP1 just don't work.
I prefer to use BootCamp and not Fusion etc - simply to maximise the MacBook resources - it's not sharing anything. That may be why I can run the apps. You just need a little planning on what you are going to work on.
    Think that's all , as I said, I'm just a user.

  • How well does Captivate work with Flash?

I'm kind of new to e-learning. I can create interactivity in Flash  just have not used e-learning software, currently we have Articulate and  it seems to be limited to actionscript 2 and player 6 for some things I  need to do. Below is the description of what I have done.
I created a module built in flash which has 4 questions (will have many more). The data and images are loaded in using an XML file. The questions require  the user to select the correct image, if he doesn't, he is asked to  push a button, to go back. When he selects the correct image he can move to the next question.
I need the module to work in  a linear fashion, in articulate the user can move forward and back to any question as  he wishes because the navigation is on the articulate template and does  not control the swf.
How well does flash communicate with captivate? Can I  pass variables? Can I restict the user from moving forward until a flash  "widget is complete"?
    Any help is appreciated!

At the end of the day, the presentation is compiled into AS3 so you can easily communicated with Captivate. Actually, what you need to do is a Captivate Question Widget. If you build your swf as this, you'll be able to edit your questions from within Captivate and benefits from their LMS tracking features and some more.
I'm pretty sure that you can block to move to the next question but maybe someone else can corroborate.

I am interested in buying a NETGEAR Push2TV display TV streamer to use with my MacBook Pro and AirPort Extreme.
I saw on the Netgear site that a Intel Wireless Display/WIFI driver software is required for PC's; do we have this software installed already on our MacBook Pro's? Is any one using this box and does it work well for you, any problems or setup issues?

  • New 30" ACD + New Macbook Pro C2D 15" How well do they get along?

Hi, I am considering getting a new 15" macbook pro, 2.33 c2d and either a 30" cinama display ( my first choice ) or the 23"
What I would like to know is if anyone else has used both of these combinations and weather or not the 30" combo makes the laptop work any harder.... fans run more? more heat? any other differences/considerations that i may not thinking about?
My main concern is that the 30" will make the fans run all the time or slow down the machine.
    Thanks for any input
    Chuck

    Hi Chuck,
Running a 30 inch cinema display is going to make your computer slightly slower for some operations, but mostly those that depend on the Graphics Chip (GPU), and because it gives the GPU more of a hammering since it's such a large display, you'll find it may get hotter and the fans go on more. If you're doing computationally intensive tasks that don't use the GPU, it won't make them slower.
The thing to remember is that when you have two displays, the VRAM and the GPU processing power is shared between the two screens. If you have a 2.33ghz C2D, you presumably have the 256MB graphics option, which will allot 128MB per screen, which should be fine.

  • How well does GarageBand work with the MB Air or the MB Pro 13"?

Greetings, everyone! I'd considering purchasing my first Apple computer -- to become more familiar with OSX (professionally) and to use GarageBand with my MIDI-compatible electronic keyboard (personally).
I'm having trouble deciding which laptop to buy--the Macbook Air or the Macbook Pro (probably the 13" -- I'm having a lot of trouble justifying the price jump from the 13" to the 15"). I like the beautiful look of the Macbook Air; but I'm wondering whether 2GB of RAM (at least for the models from Amazon.com -- where I want to buy from) will be sufficient. I plan to do basic photo editing, browsing, perhaps some simple video editing, and to use GarageBand. For that reason, I'm leaning towards the Macbook Pro 13" (sadly, with the now-dated Intel Core 2 Duo, and with 4GB).
Can anyone who is using GarageBand with either the Air or the Pro 13" with 4GB tell me what the performance is like? Would I regret going with the Air 2GB, the Pro 13" with 4GB, or even both? Thanks!

    Thanks! I have a Yamaha PSR-E403. 61-keys.

Also, since you asked what model KB I have...
Like most electronic keyboards I'm sure, this model doesn't have any space to place the MBP on top. What do other users use to hold their laptop in an effective spot for lessons, etc.?
http://www.amazon.com/Stage-Stands-Deluxe-2-Tier-Keyboard/dp/B0002M3OJ0 looks good...but I already have the keyboard stand.
http://www.amazon.com/Stage-KSA7500-Second-Keyboard-Stands/dp/B0002E3DNU/ref=sr13?ie=UTF8&m=A3QI5PL377NJ1M&s=musical-instruments&qid=1291044721&sr=1-3 appears to be the upper portion of the same item and would likely work in my situation.
OTOH, these products appear to be designed for placing a larger music keyboard above the primary keyboard -- not for a laptop. Appreciate any comments.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 DVI HDMI out does not work with TV when the power cable is connected

My Macbook Pro (Early 2011) DVI HDMI out does not work with TV when the power cable is connected. If get the blue screen and then can use the macbook but nothing is displayed on the TV. If i go into display I can see that there are two screens but nothing displayed on the TV. If i take the power cable out at this point the TV shows the second desktop as expected. If i then reconnect the cable, the screen flickers, as though it is being affected by the power cable, and the screen goes blank on the TV. Only if i remove the DVI cable do i get the blue screen again. If i remove the power cable and reconnect it will do it every single time, so i cannot see it being a TV issue or a minor glitch.
I have had this working previously but at the minute it seems to not be playing ball....any thoughts
    Thanks

  • How well does VIP work?

I plan to configure two NICs per server in the public network for VIP. Based on what i read, if VIP is being "aliased" on NIC1 and if NIC1 fails, Clusterware will move it to NIC2. And if both the NICs on the server fails, it will move the VIP to the other server in the cluster.
Does anyone have any experience with this setup and do you know how well this works?
    Thanks!

I was not really referring to teaming up two NICs as one, if that's what you meant by pairing or bonding.
According to the RAC FAQs on metalink:
Can our 10g VIP fail over from NIC to NIC as well as from node to node ?
Yes the 10g VIP implementation is capable from failing over within a node from NIC to NIC and back if the failed NIC is back online again, and also we fail over between nodes. The NIC to NIC failover is fully redundant if redundant switches are installed.
    Also, in the same FAQ:
Can I set up failover of the VIP to another card in the same machine or what do I do if I have different network interfaces on different nodes in my cluster (I.E. eth0 on node1,2 and eth1 on node 3,4)?
With srvctl, you can modify the nodeapp for the VIP to list the NICs it can use. Then VIP will try to start on eth0 interface and if it fails, try eth1 interface.
    ./srvctl modify nodeapps -n -A //eth0\|eth1
Note how the interfaces are a list separated by the | symbol and how you need to quote this with a \ character or the Unix shell will interpret the character as a pipe. So on a node called ukdh364 with a VIP address of ukdh364vip and we want a netmask (say) of 255.255.255.0 then we have:
    ./srvctl modify nodeapps -n ukdh364 -A ukdh364vip/255.255.255.0/eth0\|eth1
To check which interfaces are configured as public or private use oifcfg getif
    example output:
    eth0 138.2.238.0 global public
    eth1 138.2.240.0 global public
    eth2 138.2.236.0 global cluster_interconnect
An ifconfig on your machine will show what the hardware names for the interface cards installed.
This is what i was referring to.

  • Intel MacBook Pro and uncompressed video. Does it work???

I'm about to buy a 2nd edit system (currently running dual G5, AJA IO, with FCP 5 and, 3TB of SATA uncompressed storage) I need this next system to be mobile but still do uncompressed video. I see that you can use the AJA IO with the old MacBooks but you need a PCMCIA FW card with dual FW800 drives raided together to do 10bit uncompressed off of Digi Bet or Beta SP. Id there a pcmcia card slot on the new intel macbooks? Is anyone running this setup with success? I need to buy this thin ASAP and have it running soon. Any ideas?

MacBook Pros do not have CardBus slots or PCMCIA Type II. They do have one ExpressCard/34 slot which is, I believe, becoming the new industry standard. Well, ExpressCard is, anyway. It's simply a higher bandwidth expansion card format that uses the PCI Express bus or USB 2.0 for connectivity. It's important to note that the MacBook Pro uses the 34mm form factor (there is also a 54mm form factor). You'll probably have to wait for the hardware you have to support ExpressCard/34.

  • Macbook Pro 15 (2012) trackpad scrolling does not work right

Is there any way to maybe recalibrate the trackpad or anything? any tips are very appreciated, as I have tried all i can think of up to this point.

    Hi rbarnes1121,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
From what I understand, your trackpad on you MacBook Pro can be erratic and perform commands that you are not meaning for it to perform. In this situation, I would recommend reading over the attached article to help troubleshoot this situation.

  • How well does Rewire work in Logic Pro 7.2?

Has anybody who got 7.2 tried Rewire? What do you think of it? Any visible improvement?

probably thats gonna be a no no as well
this was not a bug fix
it was more loops for the GARAGEBAND users, and an intel base LOGIC
    not necessary a bug fix
i swore to god, i have a feeling after this update (7.2) apple is gonna make another update saying they have fix the real problems and we have to pay for it again
then you'll get some idiots from this forum who tell us not to blame apple but to wait and buy and try to see if the problem is still there
get a hint "LOGIC 7" was cool but useless, also 7.0.1 which was useless because it was for free and didn't really fix much bugs
then 7.1 which fix a few bugs but not the most important ones and it also introduced more bugs and they added more loops just to make us happy
    now there is 7.2 .GOD!!
again the most important problems haven't been fix
I bet you, you'll get some appleASS licking user who is gonna tell us not to worry and wait for the next update and hope they fix it
why won't they just listen to our problem so they know how it is in the real world
you testing logic on a clean INTEL mac doesn't mean thats how it is all around
    hopeless!!!!

  • Intensify as external editor: how, and how well, does it work?

Intensify from developer macphun I have assigned as an image editor in iPhoto Preferences/Advanced.  In iPhoto when i click on Edit the image opens in Intensity and can be edited.  Unfortunately, saving after editing the image presents a standard file dialog offering to save the edited image in Documents.  Getting the edited image back into iPhoto requires importing.  Afterwards other data, such as Places, Faces and notes, are gone, although the original unedited photo remains in iPhoto and still has the data.
To edit with Intensify seems to require exporting, editing, then re-importing the photo.  Is this how all iPhoto external editors work?  I had thought that an external editor would substitute for iPhoto's editor and edit the existing photo while it remained in the iPhoto library  I see on the MacPhun web site that Intensify Pro can be run "...as either a standalone app or as a plug-in to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Apple Aperture."  Does iPhoto need a plug-in version to simply replace its internal editor?
In past versions OS X allowed applications to provide services to one another.  I have not kept up with how services are implemented, but I think I expected iPhoto to essentially use its services when an editing program was selected.
Can someone more familiar with OS X services, iPhoto's use of external editors in general and/or Intensity in particular, help me understand this?

    Terrence,
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the help.  Sounds like you have considerable expertise in what I need to learn.  Some of what you said I do not understand.  If you could clarify these points it would help me more.
You say "No it's not like this with any editor used as an external editor in iPhoto."  I assume you mean an external editor would edit the photo while the photo remains within the iPhoto database, so export to edit followed by import to return the edited photo to iPhoto would not be needed.  Is this correct?
You say "... Intensify isn't an editor, it's a non-destructive database-based application."  In my very limited reading and experience, it seems Intensity modifies single image files.  How is an application intended to modify image files to change their appearance not an editor?  How is an application intended to work with single files a database-based application?
While posting here I also asked MacPhun support a similar question.  They replied "This editing procedure is fine, you can send the edited image from Intensify to iPhoto as shown at the screenshot attached."
The menu choice shown does allow saving in iPhoto after pressing in Intensity.  However, the edited image imported into iPhoto has lost metadata such as found faces, places and comments associated with the original, and it is placed in a new Event.  That MacPhun support refers to the product of what Intensity does as "the edited image" shows why I referred to Intensity as an image editor.
You say "In essence, you cannot use a non-destructive processor as an editor" yet "With Aperture I have used it as a plug-in."  To me this sounds like one can use Intensity as a non-destructive processor if Intensity's function is accessed as a plug-in.  That is, the necessity to export images from iPhoto to "process" (what I would call edit) them in Intensity results from how Intensity and iPhoto access the image files, not from the type of processing involved.
You say "This has nothing to do with services ..."  Agreed.  I mentioned services because I thought one application modifying data for another seemed like a service.
On further consideration I realize that non-destructive, eh, processing of an image requires storing the original plus the processing steps which have been implemented.  This seems similar to what iPhoto's built-in editing functions do.  However, I suspect Intensity's more complex processing of the image requires a more complex file structure, which iPhoto cannot read or write.
Supporting this idea of different file structures, I see my originals in iPhoto are typically JPGs of size 800 KB - 5 MB.  After processing by Intensity, "-edit" is append to the file name, the format changed to tiff, and the file size increase by a factor of 8.  The format conversion and consequent increase in file size I have not seen mentioned in Intensity's literature, but may be of significance to other potential users.
You say "There is no plug-in for iPhoto - perhaps you should ask the developers to make one."  Agreed.  Not for iPhoto, which is being terminated, but for its replacement Photos.
