Macbook pro to tv without dvi?

Is there a way to connect a macbook pro to the tv, without using the DVI port?
I can't get the cables for dvi to video without ordering online; and if I order online, it won't be here by father's day week-end, which is when I would need it. Is there another way?

what do the folks at your local (if there is one) apple store say? usually they can get them in a couple of days, and the dvi-svideo cable they sell is pretty common.
There are some non-apple solutions for USB to svideo/VGA/component (the yellow RCA cable), though I've never tried them, and they might be harder to find unless you've got a Fry's nearby.

Can I run my MacBook Pro Late 2008 without battery forever? Is it bad in long term or anything? Does it make the system less stable?
My battery got swollen (and I unfortunately noticed it very late and might have be running with it for months, which potentially explains all the crashes everyday and the trackpad not working anymore, the Apple test also says I have a bar of ram broken...) and I had to remove it because the back pannel did not close anymore... Can I still use my MBP normally forever that way? I was planning on buying a new mac anyway but maybe waiting for the next iMac upgrade in the year... Should I wait?

Other than the system shutting down instantly if you have a power outage, whcih could corrupt the OS. Nothing else bad will happen.

There is no way I would do the smc thing with a laptop that won't come on.

If it's new and you're anywhere near an Apple Store, take it in. If it's less than 14 days old you can exchange it. If it's more they'll repair it for you.

  • How do I combine Gmail contacts, Contacts on MacBook Pro and iPhone5 without duplicating?

I use a MacBook Pro, but my preferred mail is Gmail, so I have a lot of contacts on my MacBook from Gmail and just a few that have gradually crept into the Address Book that came with the MacBook Pro.  Just got a new iPhone 5 and have spent two days manually deleting duplicate contacts that were caused in the switch from my old Droid to the iPhone.  There MUST be a way to efficiently merge all three address/email sources without winding up with triplicate entries!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Inputting audio/video into my macbook pro? with Apple DVI to Video Adapter?

I work with video, and am trying to save my minidv cam's life. is there a more direct way to input directly from a vcr/television into my macbook pro? because right now i'm having to input from my vcr/television into my minidv then into my macbook through firewire.
i was considering the Apple DVI to Video Adapter ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=724 17D66&fnode=home/shopmac/macaccessories/cables&nplm=M9267G/A#overview )
but i'm fairly certain that this is output-only. does anyone know if there is a way to input through it as well, or anything that works similarly?

I thought that cables and adapters worked the same going either direction. I believed that the only concern was the male or female end points on them. Not sure anymore though

  • Windows 8.1 on a MacBook Pro 13" Retina without bootcamp

Hi, I have a Retina MacBook Pro 13" haswell, can I replace OS X 10.9 with Windows 8.1 without bootcamp?

Everything on it will be erased, but the drive will be re-useable.
Use Disk Utility to format it, select the erase tab, select the drive in the sidebar on the left, select MSDOS as the format and press the erase button.
Be certain that you select the flash drive and not your internal drive by mistake.

  • Why won't Macbook Pro startup properly without external monitor & keyboard?

If I connect a external monitor and keyboard to my late 2011 Macbook Pro (running Lion) it starts up just fine.
But if I try to start it up without these (or any other devices) attached, I get no display on the internal screen and the internal keyboard is ignored (the caps lock light doesn't light up when the key is pressed).
However, I don't think it's a hardware issue, as a PRAM reset seems to work (I get the second chime) indicating that the keyboard is OK. And I get a second or so of grey screen before the screen goes black.
I've tried resetting my SMC and my PRAM. The latter seemed to fix the problem once - but then it came back, and won't go away again this time.
I've also tried starting in safe, single user, and verbose mode, but none of these seem to make any difference.
I've been having some issues installing Windows (under both BootCamp and Parallels) but wouldn't have thought that these were related.

I have solved my own issue, so wanted to post here in case anyone else encounters the same thing.
My Macbook was less than 90 days old, so I booked a telephone support call from Apple. But they couldn't help. So I booked a genius bar appointment. I turned up, powered up my Macbook, and it worked fine!
Since it was working OK, there was nothing for them to investigate (though they ran some basic diagnostics anyway). But as soon as I got home it stopped working again.
Now this was really weird, so I started eliminate anything that was different between the environments - power supply, cooling pad, laptop stand...
My Macbook normally sits on an aluminium cooling pad, which in turns sits on a steel laptop stand. And when sitting on both of these (or just the stand) it exhibited the behaviour above. However, when I put it on a wooden desk it worked fine! So I replaced the aluminium cooler with a gel pad and it still worked fine. But why...?
I also noticed another difference. Once I reconnected an external display and keyboard, I found that my internal display now stayed on - whereas previously it had gone off (with only the external display staying on).
Searching on the internet, I discovered that this was normal behaviour under Lion, and what I had experienced previously was abnormal behaviour when the lid is open - but normal behaviour when the lid is closed. And since Macbooks use magnets to determine whether or not the lid is open, those who preferred the closed lid behaviour were using fridge magnets to fool their Macbooks into behaving that way.
It seems that my stand and/or cooler was acting in the same way as a magnet, and making my Macbook think that the lid was closed. So the internal display stayed off whether or not I had an external display connected. Isolating it from the stand with a gel pad has resolved this issue.
So I guess that Macbooks weren't designed to be used on metal surfaces...

  • Format Macbook Pro Hard Drive without a keyboard

HI, I have a macbook pro with a water damaged keyboard that I am selling for parts.  I need to know if there is anyway to delete all of content and or format the HD without the use of an apple keyboard.  I have a cheap external keyboard i am using that does not have the apple command and options key.  Anyone have any ideas?

You could simply remove the hard drive.
Weather you choose to reformate it in an external enclosure would be up to you, if you think for parts it should be included.
You can buy a Apple bluetooth keyboard from Best buy and see if you can get it to connect, either way you have 15 days to return it.

  • Macbook pro with or without retina display?

I am looking to purchase a macbook pro for the next couple of years for my studies, which will be for College and University. However, I am very unsure whether to go for the macbook pro with retina display (15 inch) or the one without. This is due to the fact that the one with retina display has 256 GB flash storage, and I will be storing music, pictures and word/powerpoint documents that will accumulate over the next few years. Is this enough storage? Will I need more? I really like the screen/display on the retina macbook pro, and would love to go with it, however I do not know if 256 GB is enough compared to the 500 GB that the 15 inch non-retina macbook pro offers. Please help! All help would be VERY appreciated.

whatever I have will be with me for the next 4-5 years...should I go with the non-retina because of this?
It doesn't directly follow that you should limit yourself to the non-Retina, because it depends on how much storage you need. If the amount you need in the next 5 years is within the Retina storage amounts you can afford, then of course the Retina would work fine. Now, to work out what you would need in the next 5 years...
    nba123 wrote:
Also do you think I will need 256gb or 500gb? which is more likely for me?
We can't guess that for you, because it depends on your individual storage habits. You said you would need to store "music, pictures and word/powerpoint documents." You would need to start with what you currently store, and then have an idea of how fast you accumulate them. The numbers can vary widely depending on how fast you grow your music and photo collections, and the sizes of the files. For example, a person using a DSLR camera shooting 24-megapixel raw files will have a photo collection that grows in size much faster than someone who only stores JPEG files from a camera phone.
I wouldn't worry about Word or PowerPoint files as those tend to be quite small. What consumes disk space the fastest is digital media: Music, photos, and videos. Especially HD videos. You can store maybe 100 Word files in the space taken up by a single music CD. A single 5-minute HD video can use up the same space as over 1000 Word files.
Also, you will want to leave at least 50GB unused so that the system has enough room to manage temporary files like virtual memory and temp files, some of which can be rather large. If after you run the numbers you will need over 200GB or so, then you should be looking at the 500GB to avoid space issues. For most users, 256GB of total disk space seems to be enough though.

  • Macbook Pro not starting without Holding Power Button

    Hello,
my Macbook Pro (bought March 2008) seems to be dead.
When the power button is pressed (and ONLY IF HELD.. cause if I just push it once it powers up and turns off instantly) it starts and does 2 seconds of normal boot (DVD drive check, HD starts to spin along with the fans) then the power just cuts out and you hear the HD off sound. The LED on the front at this moment keeps flashing and then all goes off.
I tried doing a SMC reset and even a PRAM reset already, but no luck. I've read to try an Hardware Test with the Install DvD so I've inserted it but the MacbookPro powers off before even starting it (The Screen never starts )
    What should I do?
    Thanks for your help :-S

I already tried with the Battery in and without but no luck. I'm sure it's not that kind of problem unfortunally
