Macbook Pro / Toshiba External Drive issue

I have been using a Toshiba External HDD drive for about a year. Everything was fine until a couple of days ago when I attempt to connect my drive to my Macbook Pro ((10.5.8), I'm getting the following "The device you are trying to connect is drawing too much power therefore the USB connection will be be disabled". Therefore I can't access stored info: iTunes, documents etc. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Again, it's has been working great for the past year.

To add to Kay's comments I have a little Toshiba drive that just did this. I started using a hub and the drive worked for a few more days and then died completely and I returned it under warranty.
Once you get it working I would highly suggest making sure everything on the disk is backed up to another disk and I wouldn't use it for anything important.

    Yesterday, while using Final Cut Pro X, I noticed the program/my computer was starting to run slow--and then I was totally caught off guard by a warning that my startup disk was full. I checked Storage and Finder and both my MacBook Pro and external drive had less than 1gb of space each! I usually use Secure Empty Trash and have no problems...but for my drives to be full, it clearly hasn't been working for a few days, possibly weeks.
    I'm using a MacBook Pro (early 2011) and a LaCie Thunderbolt external drive. I'm running Mavericks (10.9.2)
    I am not using Time Machine. When I look at Storage under About This Mac, my Backups on my MBP and LaCie drive are both at zero KB.
    I read through the forums and tried going into Terminal and entering sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash ...but all that did was free up about 10gb on my external drive (I'd emptied upwards of 90gb from my trash).
    Right now I'm basically stuck with a slow laptop and very little storage space, which has slowed my work to a halt. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
    Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
    The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
    Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • UPS Energy Saver on MacBook Pro for External Drives

    A search here has shown this topic come up before -- such as at https://discussions.apple.com/message/1886738#1886738 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/8162836#8162836 -- but I can't find a resolution, so I'm bringing it up again.
    I have multiple FW drives connected to my MacBook Pro. The MBP is connected to an APC Back-UPS RS 1200. OSX does not make the UPS Energy Saver autoshutdown preferences available on the MBP, the reasoning being that a laptop shouldn't need UPS autoshutdown because it has its own battery which is likely to run for far longer than the UPS would.
    That's all well and good for the MBP itself, but it doesn't account for the multiple FW drives which are attached to it for backups and other purposes. In the event of a power outage, without UPS autoshutdown, the UPS will run down, and the drives will abruptly power off, exposing them to potential data loss and damage.
    It's also not a solution to suggest that I manually power things down once there's a power outage, because the power can go out while I'm away for more than the few minutes of UPS battery back up time. The only real solution is to have UPS autoshutdown available on all portable machines. Unless and until Apple offers a (surely very simple) OS update to make that happen, I'm still interested in a solution.
    APC's own software for autoshutdown stopped being updated long ago, so there is no version compatible with Snow Leopard.
    The only potential solution I've found so far is http://www.apcupsd.org/ -- but its documentation is overwhelming and it appears that it may need other supporting software, a fair amount of Terminal usage, etc., all making it not very user-friendly for the very simple usage I'd want to make of it.
    Does anyone know of any other solutions, software that can run on a MBP to add UPS autoshutdown functionality?
    Re: Apcups, is anyone using it successfully on a MBP? If so, does anyone know if the version listed here -- http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Apcupsd.shtml -- is a simple application that I can easily install and configure like regular Mac apps? If yes, then I'll likely be very happy with no need for the following question. If no, can anyone provide simple instructions to set up Apcupsd to do what I want?

    Big assumption there. With today's notebooks so capable of acting as desktop substitutes, they are often left running unattended to complete demanding tasks overnight or while the user does other things.
    To be able to suspend such activities and gracefully power down an external drive or drives in the event of a power outage, the Mac would have to have instructions from each third-party application or process that is running about how to interrupt its activity safely and without jeopardizing the integrity of whatever hard disk directories are in use. Then it would need to unmount the drive(s) and, if they were bus-powered drives, turn off the power to each of them at the port to which it was connected. I bet it would be possible for all app developers to write such instructions into their apps' code, but where's the incentive for them to do so? This isn't a feature that most users would gladly pay extra for, I suspect, and the cost of adding it to apps that don't have it now and testing it for reliability and proper function under all conceivable circumstances would not be trivial.
    If the drive(s) were AC-powered, the computer wouldn't be able to power them down itself -- the UPS would have to do that, or simply leave them on and power them until its battery was depleted or the AC was restored. It wouldn't matter which happened as far as the drives and their contents were concerned, because once the computer stopped using them, powering them off would be safe at any time.

  • Macbook Pro Reformat Hard drive issues

    Hard drive crashed a few months back in my MBP.  My optical drive doesn't work and I have Snow Leopard install disks.  I went to Best Buy, bought a 1TB Seagate SATA SSD+HDD hybrid drive to replace the 250 GB one I had.  I'm trying to get the stupid thing to format buy I'm not having any luck.  Here's what I've tried:
    1.  Was able to boot up through disk utility and tried to install OS Mavericks wirelessly but when I login to my apple account to verify, and click install I get a quick message stating there was a problem and to try again.  It never works
    2.  Bought a external optical drive and tried to install Snow Lepoard but when I turn it on that way it tries to load and then goes to a gray screen tell me that my computer needs to restart.  I restart it and it does the same thing.
    3.  Went to the Mac Store to ask some questions. . .told them I had an iMac and bought a firewire cable. I've tried to install Snow Lepoard via firewire cable but the instructions that I find just plain don't work.  I run Lion on my iMac and I can get my computer to recognize my MBP but choosing that and formatting it with the drive on my iMac isn't working either.
    I'm about to use the stupid MBP as a frisbee out my back patio.  Please help!

  • 17" MacBook Pro with external monitor issues under 10.6.4

    I have a 17" MacBook Pro 2.4ghz "connected" to a 23" Apple cinema display. For years now I've been able to just connect and wake from sleep with the MBP closed and start working. Ever since I've upgraded to 10.6.4 I have had problems getting my external monitor to switch on. I've had them both in the my local service centre and had them tested and they're both working fine individually. I though it may have been a power supply or Nvidia problem but they're fine. I can't get my monitor to wake either with the MBP closed or open. The sleep light will be lit but there is nothing on the monitor. I've zapped the PRAM, reset the SMC, run DiskWarrior and repaired permissions. Nothing works. I've even followed Apples guide to using them together under clam mode. Still no joy. So for now I'm stuck without being able to use my monitor which has been tested and is functioning properly. I'm wondering if anyone else has the same issues.

    that works, although the laptop isn't really close enough to my other monitor for that to make sense. I'd still like to know why it's acting this way.................... thanks for the feedback, though

  • Battery Life with Macbook Pro and External Drive

    I have a mid 2010 macbook pro with a 7200 rpm 500 gig internal drive and then a 1 terabyte external drive that I believe runs at 5400 rpm. I will be going on a trip tomorrow and I plan on watching some movies that I have made backups of while traveling. Will my battery last longer if the movies are stored on my internal or external drive? This may be an easy question but I know very little when it comes to power consumption. If I had enough time I would try them both on my own but I would like some input from others. Thanks! Also not sure if it matters but I am running lion the screen is 15 inches and it has the 2.8 processor with 8 gigs of ram. 

    Does the external disk have it's own power supply?
    If it does it will not affect your MBP battery run time.

  • Windows XP Pro on MacBook Pro with 'external drive'!?

    I don't want to load Windows XP Pro on the MBP ... it will take up too much space - I'm running Final Cut Studio and Logic Audio.
    Can I put Windows XP Pro on a SEPARATE DRIVE, along with the few apps I want to use in Windows ... and then BOOT from that drive when I want to work in Windows?
    And would there be something specific I have to watch out for?
    Is there a good article somewhere about running Windows on the Mac Intel? That would help my technical guy create the bootable Windows\Mac Intel version external drive?

    I'm awaiting my new Final Cut Pro Studio Universal disks, and then my Logic Audio 'Universal' disk ... I don't think I'm going to have a lot of room to play with.
    I'm already eyeing the 120 gig drive.
    But, actually, I'm not sure I want to have Windows in any way connected to this computer. The idea makes me nervous.

  • MacBook Pro + FS100 + external drive....help!

    I am currently in production on an indie film...this weekend we have a location shoot where I will need to download the footage from our FireStore drives onto external drives so we can have a smooth production and not lots of downtime for offloading said footage.
    I have a MacBook that I planned on using for this function (usually we just put it on the Quad-Core after the day of shooting is over) but I only have one fire wire input on my MacBook - I need to have one for the FS drive and one for the external HD.
    Any suggestions?? I'm stumped (or I could just be fried from this long month of production...)

    I will check out my externals to see if I can figure it out. I think they do have 2 firewire inputs....I'm not quite sure though how to configure that....Both the computer & FS100 drive would go into the HD? Man, I feel like an idiot - this is unchartered territory for me!!

    The easiest way to do this would be to set up a wireless storage network. The best way to do that I know of is to buy an AirPort Extreme base station, which has that capability. This way, you can share multiple disk drives wirelessly in write mode with multiple Macs.
    A cheaper alternative is to connect one of your MBPs to your external disk drive and enable fire sharing on it (via the sharing preference panel). On the MBP that has the disk drive, select its icon and get ino on it, then make sure the permissions are set up properly on it. You can then mount the disk drive on the other MBP.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 AirPort Driver Issue Causes Grey Screen of Death

    Hello, I'd like to report a problem with the AirPort driver. It appears that if you connect to an AdHoc source for internet connection, the computer after a few minutes will crash with a Grey Screen of Death. Upon reboot it says a serious error has occurred with a stack trace pointing back to the AirPort driver. I have all the latest patches installed as well. I thought this was a problem with my laptop so I exchanged it for another with and it exhibited the same problem.

    Do you know if he submitted an error report after the crash? I got prompted but I didn't get a chance to because I wasn't in a WiFi zone and after reformatting the machine, I don't want to get another GSOD so I haven't connected to Ad-Hoc so I hope someone else was able to successfully report it.

    This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

    To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
    Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
    But however you do choose to link the two machines...
    Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
    This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

    It can't be done. If your computer has an internal optical drive, working or not, that is the drive you must use. Only computers such as the Macbook Pro Retina/Macbook Air that have no internal optical drive can install Windows from an external drive.

    If what doesn't work?
    If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
    You can then do any of several things:
    1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
    2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
    If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
    3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
    If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times.
