Macbook Pro trackpad and keyboard freezes after attempting sleep mode

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".
This has been happening a lot when I am using Skype while talking to someone with video and sound. The computer tries to go on sleep mode because I am not typing or touching it - it thinks I am away because I am just talking and watching the person on the other side.
I touch the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode and with that it freezes the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse" cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and a study I am conduting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it sleep ever. I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

this is in the wrong category. I added a new message to the right category: MacBook Pro but I don't know how to delete it from here.

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".

I have to keep touching the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode. If it attempts to sleep, it freezes and stops the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person on Skype with no problems, and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse"/trackpad cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard. But that interrupts the Skype call and the video and the internet connection. It is a very frustrating interruption.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and my website usability study I am conducting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it go on sleep mode ever, but I forget sometimes when I focused on the study.
I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware. I am also concerned that if I never let it sleep it will shorten the battery's life span.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (beginning of March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.

"...No, I haven't. I am assuming it will take too long, they might not have the answer, and I don't have the time for a long phone call now.
The Apple store in Arlington is always too busy and you I waited over an hour to be helped a few times before."
    1. The phone call will at the very least get you a case number and they can advise you if this is a current issue.
    2. Making an appointment with the genius will at the very least cut down your wait time.

  • Macbook pro trackpad and keyboard don't function

I was working on my photography coursework monday night, and my keyboard froze, but the mouse worked. then I restarted it (losing all my unsaved editing, by the way) and neither the trackpad or internal keyboard worked. after that, for a few days, they both worked on and off, before completely ceasing to function.
I'm running 10.5.6, and I had to buy an external mouse and keyboard this evening.
my warranty has run out, I don't have apple care, and I cant go for more than 24 hours without my computer because we don't have another one in the house.
does anyone know what the problem may be, and how to fix it without being without a computer for the next god only knows how long? (the place I got my mbp from doesn't allow loaned computers etc.)
(I do not have the money to buy a new laptop either)

Funny thing is I had the exact same problem last week. I run a Macbook Pro 2.2 intel. The laptop is alway in a studio, on a stand and connected to an external keyboard and Wacom tablet. I'll use the laptop keypad and trackpad maybe 1% of the time out of the day. The day I updated to 10.5.6 is when the keypad and trackpad stopped working.
I had updated to 10.5 about 2-3 weeks previous, after running 10.4 for over a year with no problems. The original Archive and Instal had so many issues that I was forced to do the new instal and wipe the hard drive. After a few calls to Apple regarding the 10.5 install issues, I was offered an additional 90 days warranty.
When I took it into Apple last weekend for the keypad and trackpad issues I was told that the warranty that was offered as a goodwill gesture didn't cover any hardware issues, only software. Apple ran through a few things on the laptop and also tried booting off a bootable startup disk and couldn't figure out the problem.
I did check the cable issue as described below and also went thought other resets that I have read about in other posts. All to no avail.
Apple has quoted a new top case assembly and a new keyboard. With labor I'm looking at a total of £205 to fix the issue.
Seems a bit funny for it to all happen so soon after my 10.5 purchase and also on the day of the 10.5.6 update. I'm aware of how may others may have done the same update with no issues but this laptop has been treated with kid gloves over the past year and a half. If I was rough with it, then I could except it but when it's been treated as it has been then I just can't understand it.
Any others with the same problems, it would be good to hear from you.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Mountain lion freezes after deep sleep

    Hello All,
I am having a strange problem with my MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012 (Mountain Lion 10.8.3). Since about January time It keeps crashing after I put it into a deep sleep. After closing the lid - waiting for 1 hour or so - then reopening the lid, i get presented with the normal Apple login screen (breifly) and then it crashes and i get a grey screen saying my mac has had an issue and it needs to restart.
When i log back on i get an error message that I can send onto Apple and then my Mac carries on as normal. Very weird.
I have searched these forums, been into the Apple store, spoken to Apple done hardware diagnostics, reinstalled the OS (worked breifly then stopped working again) - so i assume its one of the programs or bits of hardware that i use (which i have tried to isolate/remove)- but i am still strugling to solve these issues.
It would be great if someone could give me some advice around:
    1. Where I can find these log files/error messages, etc.
    2. Understanding what it is causing this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

The solution is to dump the 100€ mini-display port DVI-D adapter that apple sells and buy a mini-Display to Display-Port cable for 6€. No crashes, no annoying interruption of the display (which I had several times the day for 2 or 3 seconds). There are very short interruptions now, but it is much better than with the apple adapter. The apple adapter needs a USB port, which is not necessary with the simple cable.
As for the monitor: Burn In, otherwise great. The burn in can be erased via monitor menu but should not be there in the first place.
    Hope this helps.

  • My MacBook Pro starts and shuts off after loading for sometime

My MacBook Pro starts and shuts off after loading for sometime

Try starting in Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while booting. Safe mode takes a while to load the OS. After that, restart the computer normally.
If that does not work, start up in Recovery by holding down the Command and R keys. In the window that opens, choose Disk Utility at the bottom and verify and repair your disk. Repair permissions while you are there.

  • Trackpad and Keyboard Freezes on my Macbook

I have a spring 2008 model macbook whose keyboard and trackpad will freeze when my macbook gets too hot. Usually before it freezes up the macbook will try, over the course of several minutes, to eject a CD even though there is no CD in the drive. Shortly after that the keyboard and trackpad freeze up.
I've taken it to the Mac Store and they ran the computer through a "stress test" but could not get it to have the same trackpad freeze as I did so they did not fix it. I have taken the battery out and that seems to help a bit but it did freeze up as I was writing this post and had to reboot.
Anybody know how to fix this on a Macbook (not macbook pro)? Thanks

My keyboard and trackpad freezes too. It seems to occur when screen dims. After I force the restart by holding down the power button, everything works again. But later, it will freeze again.
I have built-in keyboard and trackpad firmware version 1.0.1. No additional updates cued when this application is selected from the applications\utilities holder.
I am currently running Mac OS 10.5.6 on a White MacBook 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2Gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Plugging in an external mouse works during the freeze.
    Please help. Thanks

  • Macbook Pro Retina Mouse/Keyboard freeze

    Hi there,
I have a 2013 macbook pro retina that's less than a month old. I have experienced a number of trackpad/mousepad freeze issues while using the computer. They occurred in close succession while using 10.93. I update to 10.94 and had not experienced the problem again since then(a week or more) but today it crashed. this is a big problem as i am a dj and use this laptop to play live gigs. I was hoping that you could help me isolate the problem. What happens is I will be working away and suddenly the mouse will freeze and the computer will become unresponsive, the keyboard doesn't work except for the power button.... also, the desktop background disappears upon forced restart.... any ideas? what may be causing this? Thanks in advance, Richard

If your machine is less than a month old, you should use your warranty and call AppleCare (you have 90 days of phone support) or take your machine back to the Apple Store (make an appointment with the Genius Bar first) and let them deal with the issue.
If yours is the 13" model, there is a thread on here (somewhere) about trackpad and keyboard failures when also using Bluetooth, I think (don't quote me on that - I don't have the affected machines so I don't follow the thread too closely).
But I do believe that Apple is aware of the issue and had 'fixed' it in either a patch preceding 10.9.4 or in 10.9.4 itself.
    Give them a call...

  • Macbook Air Trackpad And Keyboard Unresponsive!! PLEASE HELP!

Hello everyone, a while ago (about 2 months) my Macbook air started having troubles with its trackpack and keyboard. At random times they would become unresponsive and just stop working. They would work for like 1 second when the computer turns on but then it would stop. A couple weeks ago the problem stopped occuring the keyboard and trackpad were working fine and dandy. Of course until last night, I open the computer and the trackpad and keyboard won't work.. The keyboard lights are on and the power button works but nothing else does it is extremely frustrating! I did an SMC reset which worked for like 5 minutes until it stopped working again. I have done a NVRAM reset nothing, I have done everything that I have seen but I need a fix for this! The mac is running OS X 10.9.3 and I am pretty sure that is the latest. Please help me guys I am really getting frustrated with this undying problem ;/

you don't need to disassemble your device.

  • Macbook pro mouse and keyboard don't work after installing drivers.  Help!

I just installed windows XP SP2 on a macbook pro 2.66 i7 running 10.6.4. I installed the boot camp drivers from my OSX install disk and now neither keyboard, trackpad, nor usb mouse work. Not sure what to do other than delete the partition and start over. Any help is much appreciated!

I have the exact same problem with the same two operating systems and the same exact computer. Needless to say, I would also love to get an answer to this question.

  • MacBook Pro beeps and briefly freezes in predictable pattern

    I have an early 2011, 15" MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8.
Recently, it's been making fairly quiet but high-pitched beeping noises, not sporadic, but in a regular pattern. When this beeping occurs, whatever I'm using briefly freezes: If I'm using Chrome, the next page will load only after the beeping stops. If I'm using VLC, the video freezes typically for 10 seconds; once the beeping stops, the video turns gray for a second before continuing normally. If I'm using iTunes, the audio similarly freezes. I've also noticed these hitches occur about once an hour.
I don't know what caused this. A week or so ago I moved out of my apartment. There it was fine, and now it's like this. To my recollection, nothing else major has happened. I'm very delicate with my laptop, so I'm sure I didn't bang it up or anything.
If you're curious about console messages during the hitches:
VLC says:           main input error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late (jitter of 9408 ms ignored)
Chrome says:      The GPU process hung. Terminating after 10000 ms.
    Any ideas?
P.S. More about the beeping noise: It's the kind of noise a healthy computer makes during run-of-the-mill processes, only in a peculiar, regular pattern. I may be confusing beeping for subtle clicking, by the way.

  • Macbook Pro trackpad partly stops working after 1 touch

I have a very strange problem with the trackpad on my macbook pro (late 2008, fully updated, SSD, 4Gb).
When a mouse is used all is fine. WHen I touch the trackpad ONCE, it will stop working correctly, it will:
    - not detect a single click
    - will detect a doucle click
    - mouse moving (one or two fingers) no problem
IF the SMC is reset (unplug/remove battery/hold power button 5 sec/put battery back/ plug in power/start up)
all is ok, BUT after 1 time use the trackpad the same appears.....
    I have sofar tried:
    - SMC (described)
    - PRAM reset
    - disk utility (recover/fault detect)
    - restore from time machine
    - Yasu
nothing new is configured, the only thing i can imagine is that I moved the mac, while it was running, from its place and walked away from the place were the connected bluetooth mouse was located.....
    anyone any clue?

    Tx Ogelthorp,
But this did not work; one strange observation:
While not touching the trackpad from start after reset it works with a seperate mouse as it should.
Then one touch on the trackpad and it is ignoring the single click BUT SO IS THE MOUSE?
so no hardware fault I guess as it is exactly repeatable...
    any other ideas?

  • Issue with MacBook Pro trackpad and Adobe Lightroom 5

I'm using Lightroom 5 on a MacBook Pro (mid 2012).  Whenever I'm in the development tab I am unable to click on anything within the center third of the screen.  If I want to get to the 5th or 6th photo in the bottom pan, I have to use my mouse.  I am able to click on things only on the left and right sides of the screen for some reason.
This only happens in Lightroom.  Any ideas?

    Thanks for the quick reply.
    Lightroom 5.7.1
    OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
I'm not using an external display.  If it matters my MacBook is a 13".
As an example of what I mean, look at the image below.  Everything highlighted in green I'm able to click.  After I'm in develop for more than a few minutes, I'm suddenly not able to right click or left click on anything.  The typical "mouseover" changes don't happen either, such as the subtly highlighting that happens when you mouse over an image in the bottom pain.  As if Lightroom isn't detecting the mouse there at all.

  • Macbook Pro-Mouse and Keyboard cable

So i have a macbook pro running OS X
Specs: 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo
               4 gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram
               250 gb 7200 rpm
               Dual body design year: 2008
My problem is that the keyboard and mouse have gone out several times and I have found that the sticky note under the battery works for awhile but the cable supplying the keyboard and mouse eventually fail due to a failed design for a machined slot for the cable.  I have first replaced this by buying a new topcase only to have the problem fixed for a year.  Today i have installed a new cable that i purchased online only to have the keyboard and mouse instantly work again flawlessly.  Has apple determined this a faulty design and will they compensate for my misfortune so i can possibly buy a new laptop or should i just switch back to Microsoft? Thanks

I'm just guessing, but I suspect you have a better chance of winning the state lottery than of Apple giving you the price of a new MBP for your old machine with its array of do-it-yourself band-aids. This is probably true even if your state has no lottery.

  • Macbook Pro screen and keyboard lights problems

Hi there, I have a macbook pro 15'' late 2011. Lately I realised that the screen does not dim when in a dark room and the keyboard lights do not work either. The keyboard keys work for dimming and lighting the screen, but it does not happen automatically. As for the keyboard lights, pressing the F5 and F6 buttons brings up the image of keyboard lights and they seem to be increasing and decreasing, but in fact nothing happens and the keyboard remains without any lights.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks without lighted keyboards that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Macbook pro screen and keyboard light turns off

    Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my macbook pro, if im sitting at a table and i glide my laptop slightly my screen and keyboard light goes off and i cant see anything.
I have to turn it left or right to try and get it back on.....same thing if i close my computer and reopen it again it wont wake up from sleep mode.
anyone else having a similer issue? is this software related?

That seems like a loose or failing cable.
You could try a SMC reset:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964  to elimate the controller.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
    check warranty https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
You could try running the Apple HArdware Test, not always definitive however.  If it shows an error code report back.
