Macbook pro turns on when power adapter is plugged in

Sometimes my macbook pro (early 2011), turns itself on when i plug the power adapter is plugged in, and the screen is black and unuseable and I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. Then i turn it back on and all is fine.
It does not happen all the time and I believe it has something to do with my power on schedule (my computer turns itself on at 2:00am and turns off at 7:50am) however it still turns on if the power adapter is plugged in after 8am
Just wondering if this happens a lot or my hardware is dodgy? (has happened on 10.7, 10.7.1, 10.7.2)
Tim

+I always power down my mac mini when not in use and then turn off the surge protector. ... Also this keeps resetting the internal clock.+
Since you have done this as a habit and it is an older machine, I suspect the "watch battery" inside the Mini that powers the Mini's pram needs to be replaced. These seem to get depleted faster when Minis aren't connected to power full time.

Can I use a new US MacBook Pro with a UK power adapter? I am pretty sure I can as the output of the adapter says 100-240v, but would welcome any input other than my assumption! Many thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yes the MagSafe can be used with any 100-240 volt supply, you'll get best results if you use a cable/adapter that has an earth or you might feel a tingle in your palms when using it ...

You either need to plug in your charger and if that isn't working if your machine is less than a year old take it in to your nearst Apple Store and let them deal with it. Or if you are out of warrantee you will need to get a new battery for your Mac

This is a current sensor on the power bus. This seems consistent with your symptoms.
A faulty sensor on the logic board means  the board has to be replaced,  take in for repair:

  • Macbook Shutsdown when power adapter is plugged.

    Hello,
My Macbook (Jan 2007), is not charging. when i plug the magsafe it goes off. The charging lite turns green just after few seconds, it does'nt stay orange. I have tried everthing resetting SMC, PRM, changing battery etc. Does anyone have any clue, as to why is this happening. I hope its not anything to do with the Logic Board, i guess not, checked the HD other stuff-just don't what to do. Macbook is dead, no way to put in on. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

I too have periodically experienced a strange noise (spinning/hissing/scratching) coming from the area where the power adapter cord plugs in to my powerbook. The sound is louder than my HD activity.
It happens only after plugging in the power cord while the computer is on with a semi-discharged battery. If I shut the computer down while it is making the noise, the sound level decreases durring the shutdown and becomes very quiet when powered off (possibly stops). The noise also stops when the cord is unpluged with the computer running but returns when plugged back in without restarting the system.
This does not occur every time I plug in as described above.

  • Spinning noise when power adapter is plugged into pb

when I plug my power adapter into the powerbook, i get a noise smilar to a hard drive spinning. Unplug it and the noise is gone.
    Any ideas?

  • Macbook pro turns off when taken off the power-cord, is the battery bad?

For a while my MCP when I take it off the charger it doesnt hold the whole time as it should and the battery doesnt last long, and now the past couple days when i take my laptop off the power-cord it will stay on for five minutes then shut down. I dont know what is going on, maybe a bad battery? I got my computer august 2006 . These are my numbers.

isnt the fully charge capacity a little low? what should I do?
    thanks!

If your MacBook Pro is a core duo model you may have a bad battery and be elgible for a battery replacement. The batteries on the original core duo MacBook and MacBook Pro had the warranty extended and extra year. The details are in this link.

  • Macbook pro with retina display power adapter popped / exploded!

I was just charging my macbook pro with retina display when a loud "pop" noise came from the power adapter and the red light on the magsafe2 connector went out. I unplugged it all immediately, but there was a burnt kind of smell and bit of black 'sooty' type material around one of the edges of the adapter!
    Thankfully the rMBP appears fine.
I actually just got a replacement rMBP as the other one had a small scratch on the body. So both the charger and the rMBP that was atached at the time of the pop, will be returned in a few days anyway. Still I am a little alarmed by it all. The charger was plugged into a 6-way extension adapter with surge protection, so I don't think it was a power surge. And anyway my tv (also plugged into the socket adapter) was on at the time and there was no problem there. Can I assume it was just a fault in the adapter? I will tell them about it of course when I call up tomorrow to arrange the return. I just hope the same isn't going to happen with the new rMBP and charger!
Has anyone else suffered a similar "pop" and broken adapter?

Apple's warranty IS international. You have a one-year warranty when you buy the machine and you can extend that - and your phone support - to three years by purchasing the AppleCare Protection Plan, which is international as well.
Good luck with your new computer!

  • Macbook pro turns off when i charge it

My Macbook pro (2013 500mb 13') works fine but occasionally it will just turn off randomly when I'm using it. I have noticed recently that it happens particularly when I plug it in to charge. I am fully able to turn it straight back on after it turns off and it works normally again. It probably happens twice a day, I have it updated to the most recent updates and I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM but nothing seems to work.

    Resetting SMC may help.

  • MacBook Pro turns off when unplugged from outlet

I have a MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo 2.26GHz
2 days ago when I unplugged it from the wall it shut off. It has been doing this since even though the battery is fully charged.
Once it is off I am able to turn it back on not plugged in and use it for the full length of the battery without problem.
Anyone would know what would cause this? and how to fix it?
    Thx

I would try the SMC reset.

  • Burnt with Macbook Pro 13" 60W Magsafe Power Adapter

I just bought a Macbook Pro 13" and unboxed it. As usual with my heavy duty devices, I decided to charge it for a day and then begin using it. As I plugged it in, the Magsafe LED flashed on. During the night, there was an issue with my electricity as the main power flickered on and off. The next morning, many of my different appliances were burnt along with my charger and my son's Macbook Pro charger. Is it really burnt or might there be an issue with the computers themselves?

well if you just bought then you should be able to return it for a refund and buy the same one again.

  • Macbook Pro turns off when the charger is moved

Had to replace my charger lately but since I've got the new one whenever I move my macbook (or just the charging cable) the macbook turns itself off. Is this a problem with the cable that I'll need to get looked at? Not sure whether this is important or not but this charger gets hot when it's plugged in even when it's not plugged into the mac whereas my old one never did.

Check the connection where the charge enters the MBP.  Look for debris and discoloration.  Also check that the spring loaded pins in the charger connector are free and not stuck.
Since this is a new charger, I suggest that you make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and bring the charger and the MBP.  Have the technicians examine it.  Also bring the purchase receipt for the charger.
    Ciao.
