Macbook Pro unable to reinstall factory settings

My macbook pro started running slow so I decided to restart it.  When restarted it I could get it to go past the apple screen and the load bar.  I didnt have my files backed up so I decided that I would just try to restore it back to the factory settings.  Everytime that I try to do this I am getting an error message.  I have verified the drives and apparently theres an issue with my hard drives.  Please advise as to how I can reset the hard drive back to the factory settings and avoid the error messages that I have been getting.  My mac book has always performed well.  The only thing that I can think of that may be causing this issue is the fact that I installed a game from the app store called Capitalism 2.  Please advise.

We cannot help you without knowing what the error message was and what version of OS X is installed. If it said the drive cannot be repaired or that you must backup all your files and reinstall, then here's what you would usually do:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you are using Snow Leopard then do this instead:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Restore macbook pro back to the factory settings, Snow Leopard, then back to Mavericks

If I restore my macbook pro back to the factory settings with the OS X install disc, it came with Snow Leopard.  Would I have to pay to go back to Mavericks OS?

If you have Mavericks now, why not just boot into the Recovery partition, erase the disk with Disk Utility, and reinstall Mavericks? Command and R at boot should get you to the Recovery partition.

  • What is the impact of restoring a MacBook Pro from 2009 to factory settings

I am concerned about all upgrades since original purchase as well as a verison of Office 2008 - all of which I intend to keep.

MacBook Pros are notebooks, Mac Pros are desktops.
Office 2008 was not prebundled with any Mac operating system in full release.   There are some Test Drive office releases that were released at times.   You'll have to find either your download direct from Microsoft, or CD from Microsoft to reinstall Office 2008.   Some have had difficulty with Office 2008 installer running on Mac OS X 10.7 or later.   You can try OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Zoho Docs as alternatives if all you do is Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.   Some Exchange servers require Microsoft's own e-mail program, while others work fine with Mac OS X Mail.   Your best bet is to backup your system at least twice before doing any restore to factory settings.

  • Macbook pro unable to reinstall macosx lion. I dont have the log ins for it Please help.

    Hey Lovely Apple support community.
I just bought a macbook pro off gumtree (a classified listings website).
everything was working fine but the laptop was slow.
I did some research and it mentioned that i needed to repair the disk, i tried that but was it told me i needed to erase everything.
I erased everything and tried to reinstall macosx lion, its asking for verification.
    Solutions i tried:
    - I asked the seller and he said he couldnt help
    - I tried to put my apple id and it declined it.
    - i tried to buy macosx lion but its no longer available
    - i bought macosx mountain lion but rejects it
Please help: What do you guys think is the best way to go on about this issue?

    kngsharif,
which model MacBook Pro did you buy? When you erased everything, did “everything” include Lion’s hidden recovery partition?
You shouldn’t need to purchase Lion if your MacBook Pro originally came from the factory with Lion installed, but you can still buy Lion from the store.apple.com site — for example, the UK page from which Lion can be purchased is here.

And to make things a little harder for me im currently in Thailand, and i dont speak Thai,
So language is a BIG barrier :-( . i know if i was in the States i can get it fix in 2 seconds!
    But thats not the case.

  • MacBook Pro unable to reinstall my OSX

    Hi!
Since I offered my old computer to my paranets, I wanted to erase all content from my MacBook Pro late 2008 and set up a new operating system. I have been already running on Mavericks, but I have an excellent idea to reinstall the OSX from the DVD that I got when I bought this macbook. Everything went pretty fine with the reisntalation, but the horror began when I realised that on Leopard is no App Store and there is no way to redownload Snow Leopard which I bought several years ago.
Is there a way to have snow leopard installed without buying it once more?

Not sure where MacWorlds' article just went?
The Mavericks has a "createinstallmedia" built into the installer. You can format a SD card "Untitiled" so it is bootable (GUID partition/journeled) run this command will automaticly seak out the package and install it on to the SD card. A Bootable installer on a SD or USB flash card.
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Download 10.9 to your working machine, quit the installer. Format a SD card leave the name "Untitled" as in the command above. Inter command line in terminal.
Maybe the link will resurface for all the details.

  • How do I restore my MacBook Pro running Lion to factory settings? I don't want to keep anything on the hard drive.

I am running Lion and know how to get to my Mac OS X Utilities but I cannot figure out how to do a full factory setting restart like I have done the past with the OS disks. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Use disk utility to format your hard drive then reinstall Mac OS X 10.7.2 (Lion) on to the hard drive.

  • I am going to restore my Macbook Pro to it's factory condition. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored my music I had to rename all those songs again. How do I get itunes to remember all of those names?

I am going to restore my Macbook Pro to it's factory condition. I do this every once in a while because it seems to improve performance. I backup everything to an external drive and then I restore only what I want from my backup drive. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored/reloaded my music I had to rename all those songs again. It took me about 2 weeks to reorganize my music. How do I get iTunes to remember all of those names and keep everything exactly the same when I restore/reload the music into iTunes?

It may seem like it does but it really doesn't.
Just delete stuff you don't want.

Use Time Machine, backup everything, do the reinstall (I recommend you don't do it) then restore your user folder with Time Machine.
