Macbook pro unexpectedly shuts down

Hello, I am having some issues with my macbook pro 2012 edition. It is often shutting down/restarting unexpectedly. When it is on charger or when I had put it to sleep after attempting to power it up, its shut off and recovers where it was left off.

Help is really appreciated. I dont want to reinstall the entire OS with all the software.
Thanks!

That kind of panic is usually caused by a memory fault, but you should start by removing the worthless Symantec "security" software.
Remove the Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:
Uninstalling your Norton product for Mac
Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh
If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. Back up all data before making any changes.

My macbook pro unexpectedly shut down after an usb plug in, and it won't turn back on. Please help!

I have this problem also. The only way to get the computer to turn back on is to open the bottom and disconnect the battery then reconnect. I have found similar problems across the web, some people seem to fix the issue by resetting the SMC, but that doesn't do anything for me.

Out of no where, in the middle of working on something on the MacBook, it just quits all open programs and restarts. What can be causing this. I just got my MacBook a few days ago. This is the second time this has happened.

Bad RAM or the RAM is NOT seated correctly. I had the same issue. Replaced the suspected stick and problem is gone. Make sure you run the "Apple Diagnostics" by inserting Disk 1 of the install and hold the "D" key while re-booting. See if you have any other issues. Also make sure the RAM appears in the "System Profiler".

  • Why is my MacBook pro unexpectedly shutting down?

I've got a 2008 MBP (core 2 duo) that I've recently upgraded to Lion.  I've had issues with it shutting off before the upgrade, but now it happens much more frequently. I suspect it's overheating, but sometimes lifting the machine or even just a gentle nudge will kill it if it is "thinking".  I had the battery replaced less than 6 months ago and, while the fresh battery has been really great, it didn't actually solve the problem. I don't know if it is overheating or if it is a logic board thing (to be honest I don't even know what a logic board is). I am still under warranty, but since I am in Japan, I'd like to have a good guess at the diagnosis before I go in and try to explain what's wrong.   Is there some way to find out for myself what the specific cause is? What does the community think? Sorry if this topic has been posted a hundred billion times, and thank you for the help.

Boot in Safe Mode by holding down Shift before the startup chime. If you can boot, there may be a problem with your startup drive.
Additionally (and optionally), boot holding down CMD-S to enter Single User Mode. It should automatically run and check your drive for problems.

MacBook Pro just shut down without notice. It had about 40% of the battery life. It will not turn back on and I noticed when plugged in the little light on the power cord is blinking orange, not a solid green like normal.  Anyone have this issue before?  I've only had this for about 3mos.  I called apple support. They tried one thing then said I have to take to the apple store. Unfortunately I don't have one nearby. So before I travel an hour+ away I thought is give it a shot on here. Thank.

    Hi S,
Did they have you try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?

My MacBook Pro recently shut down on me all of a sudden. When I restarted it, it popped up with a gray box with 'OS X Utilities,' then listed various options such as 1. restore from time machine backup, 2. reinstall OS X, 3. get help online and 4. disk utility. what do I do now? I have not backed up to Time Machine in a few days, so I'm not sure I should restore from time machine backup, is there something else I can do? Help!

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

    Hmm, good luck then!
I'm pretty much exactly on the opposite side of the planet, but I've been to Vermont and remember its rural beauty well. However, I can't imagine you having the only Internet connection within a reasonable radius (where "neighbors" hanging off the same ISP don't count). Uh, that note only if your wired connection to the router produces no good result, either...

macbook pro wont shut down without holding the power button nor cycle for updates to restart

Sorry I said sorta wrong. I can shut down and I can update to the point of restart but it just sat for 45 minutes after an update. It goes through the update and to restart then the bars chase each other in a circle and it never restarts. So I hit the power button and go through normal reboot but loosing the update in the process. It does not matter how long I wait for a natural reboot after an update or click to restart it will chase the little bar in circles all day literally and never reboot.

    Hi aaliyafrommarkham,
In order to troubleshoot this, I would recommend that you start with an SMC reset. Information on this procedure can be found here:

    1. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
    2. If there's no change, see below.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Macbook pro 2012 shuts down right after start up!

macbook pro 2012 shuts down right after start up. I tried the recovery mode but disk doctor cannot repair Mac osX hard drive. This is the second time that I have to format hard drive and install agin all applications. please advise!

I am not familiar with "disk doctor" but if you used Disk Utility to repair or reformat the hard disk, and it failed again, it is very likely the drive itself needs to be replaced. It cannot be repaired.
If Disk Utility cannot repair a hard disk it definitely needs replacement.
All 2012 MacBook Pro models are less than a year old and therefore covered under Apple's standard one year warranty. Have them fix it.

My macbook pro keeps shutting down when I try to use it , any ideas ?

I don’t know why this happens and with the information you have provided I doubt anyone can do so so with accuracy.
Please read these (they concern general trouble-shooting and how to pose questions on these fora):

  • Since I've loaded the creative cloud my MacBook Pro keeps shutting down.  Need suggestions.

SInce I loaded the creative cloud software my MacBook Pro keeps shutting down. Is there a reason for this?

There is not one specific program that it shuts down in, random shut downs and I could be in an Adobe application or another program. It may be be a coincidence, but my shut downs seems to have started after I installed Adobe's Creative Cloud.  Apple now has my laptop exploring what may be causing my issues. Their first reaction was that it could be some sort of software conflict.  I'm waiting on their diagnosis.

  • MacBook Pro keeps shutting down unless connected to mains power

My MacBook Pro keeps shutting down unless connected to mains power, even when fully charged. I took it into Apple store, Leicester, UK - battery diagnostic shows good condition so they updated the system but that hasn't worked. I'm running OS X 10.6.8

Thanks! I've followed your suggestion and so far my MacBook has been behaving for the past few hours without being plugged into mains power! Fingers crossed...

  • Macbook Pro random shut down whilst using battery

My Macbook Pro randomly shuts down whilst using battery power even though their is plenty of charge in the battery.
    Any ideas??

does it do it when plugged in?
Also it sounds that there's a power failure and causing it to shutdown, I would get it serviced asap, the battery connector might be faulty.
