Macbook pro unibody (late '08) fans running at max on startup

recently i was playing a game at a friends house, plugged in of course, and my computer shut off. i realized that though my friend said the socket was on, he had forgotten to turn it on....
so it shut off. upon turning the power on and having it show up again, i quit the game and the fans were running on high. i restarted the computer, and noticed that the fans were running on MAX on startup, going back down to normal speeds after 5 minutes (along with my computer starting up alot slower than usual). I reset the SMC (or it seems like i did..) and i repaired disk permissions, and tried repairing the disk too but still nothing. any help please?

...and tried repairing the disk too...
Did you repair the disk, or didn't you? If not, you need to. Abrupt shutdowns can be hard on the disk directory.

  • MacBook Pro Unibody (late 2008) crash when using GeForce 9600M GT

Every time I do heavy 3D rendering or play 3D games (such World of Warcraft) with the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, after few minutes my MacBook Pro (unibody, late 2008) freezes, black screen and audio looping, no actions possibile, only hard shutdown... No problems with the 9400M.
What should I do? Get a replacement?

I've had mine for a little less than two months and I noticed the overheating shortly after I got it. I think it's mostly because the fans don't spin up soon enough because the SMC controller on mine does not work properly and even if you reset it, it reverts back to only spinning the fans after a cpu/gpu temps over 90 degrees Celsius (almost boiling point!).
Mine is currently in for service but I'm being told that they haven't been able to duplicate the issue so I don't understand what method of testing they are using. I hope they don't keep my computer in repair for a long time. I know that if I fire up the Black & White 2 Demo, Call of Duty 4, or Spore and play for about 10-20 minutes the computer crashes if the fans don't spin up... Apple released a firmware update for the SMC controller but it doesn't apply to my model which is a MacBookPro 5,1 , maybe Apple doesn't realize yet how widespread the fan problem even on the late 2008 model is but it needs to be resolved and a third party utility to control the fans should not be necessary on the finest laptops available on the market. I'm confident that they will come up with something...

  • Macbook pro is not charging, fans running constantly and very loudly

I have a macbook pro 13-inch, Late 2011, until a month or so ago it had been running perfectly with no problems. At some point the magasfe power adapter stopped working, when i plugged it into my laptop there would be no light on it, and my laptop would not turn on or show any sign of turning on, i also tried the charger on my friends macbook and it did not charge hers either, i assumed it was a problem with the charger and therefore bought a new one but then found there was other problems with the laptop, it seems to only turn on when i connect the charger and then quickly press the power button before a light comes on the magsafe power adapter and hold it for around 5 seconds, the light is constantly green on the magsafe power adapter, as soon as it starts up the fans come on and are extremely noisy, the barttery doesn't charge and the laptop only works when connected to a source of power, the battery icon has an x in it and says 'no battery available' i have tried multiple supposed fixes such as resetting the SMC, cleaning the fan, and other things i have seen online but nothing seems to be working, I'm starting to wonder if the battery needs to be replaced? and if that has anything to do with the fans running constantly, can anyone help or having any other suggestions of how to fix my problem?
    thanks

  • Macbook pro 10.7.5 fan running fast and hot

Recently (past 2 weeks) my macbook pro (just over 1 yr old) 10.7.5 fan has been running fast and hot. It begins after uploading photo's into iPhoto '11. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes for it to cool down and run at normal speed. Uploads are usually 50 to 200 images. I verified the Activity Monitor CPU % and nothing exceeds 12%.
I did a restart twice this week which seems to be a temporary solution. Any tips to resolve this is appreciated.
Happens when running iPhoto is only app open.

When you were checking Activity Monitor, did you select "All Processes" from the drop down list at the top

  • Macbook Pro 13" Late 2013 Fan Not Speeding Up

I just got my MBPr i5 late 2013 a few days ago and I noticed that the fan never speeds up. I have downloaded macs fan control, as I do on all my macs and the fan never speeds up unless I set it to a constant rpm. I've purposly stressed my computer and saw the temperature shoot right up to 95 degrees celcius, and the fan speed always stays at the minimun of ~1295 rpm. No matter what I do I cant get the fan to speed up under automatic control. Is there something I can do, or should I just contact Apple Care?
Another note is that ever since updating to 10.9.2 I cant access any network drives or use airplay(which I can do from my other mac). Is this a normal issue with 10.9.2?

Yes, i bought the same $2599 Version.
I even tried two of them.
They all run super hot. Especially with chrome. Something is not optimized here.
I tried to watch some videos online using battery. It lasted 4 hours.
It was running hot all time.
I wish it could run like my bro's 2013 macbook air 13".
It runs cold regardless of using chrome or whatever.
The only time it gets warm was when i was rendering.
And it lasts like 10 hours.
I am still can't decide on keeping it.
I bought it for portability and power, but poor battery seems like giving me not much portability like the air.

  • I installed Mountain Lion on my one-year-old MacBook Pro and now the fan runs every time I use it.  That very seldom happened before.  Does Mtn Lion ,ake it work harder?  If so, can I go back to the old OS for some peace and quiet?

This is my first time trying to post a question so I'm not sure I did it correctly...

Hi JoeyR.  Well, according to this link at the Apple Store, OS X Moutain Lion became available in July and I downloaded it for $19.99.  I figured I would do that before renewing my Norton security SW.  Are we talking about the same thing?

  • Macbook Pro Unibody 2008 freezes when switching video cards

I hava a Macbook Pro unibody late 2008 running Snow Leopard and I have noticed that whenever I switch from one video card to another the system completely freezes after a while. It does not happen while doing something specific or intensive. It seems to be completely random. I have searched in forums and found out that other users are experiencing the same issue but I have found no solution yet. Does anyone know of some way to fix this?

    Try resetting your computer's SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If that doesn't resolve the issue, you may want to download and install AppleJack, a free, open-source utility that runs in Single User Mode and that has sorted out occasional problems with sleep, failure to shut down, etc. on my machines.

  • Late 2008 MacBook Pro unibody - Hard Freezes under Vista 32bit

    Hi folks,
I am a relatively new Mac fan (started a few years ago when I purchased a Mac Mini for home because I didn't want to suffer Windows at home as well as at work!)
Anyhoo, late last year I purchased a MacBook Pro Unibody jobbie so that I could have the best of both worlds for my work. I can run Visual Studio under Vista for C++ development under boot-camp and run the Mac and OSX for just about everything else.
However: I have a problem that is testing my patience to brand new levels. In summary:
About once every couple of hours or so (and it's not reliable: could be after 30 seconds, could last several hours) Vista freezes. And I mean freeze: it takes a "hold the power button down" routine to get out of it. This, of course, has made Vista and lots of my work pretty upset. There's nothing quite like writing to a file when this happens for maximum tears. I'm running through tissues like you'd never believe
I have done some research on this over the months and have tried many possible solutions including, but not limited to, ensuring that I'm fully patched up and that there is no suspicious software, updating all the drivers (paying particular attention to NVIDIA's ones - as a DirectX/OpenGL programmer for the past 10 years I'm acutely aware of how touchy they are). None of these have worked.
The closest I've come to something that looks like a solution is this thingie called Riva Tuner; but it does not recognise the April 2009 NVIDIA drivers.
I understand that it could be linked with something NVIDIA's drivers do to speed up/slow down the cards depending on load/heat/whatever.
I'm so far down my tether at this point I really do not know where to turn. I love my MacBook, but I need Bootcamp and Vista to do my job. It was my choice to get a Mac rather than a PC, so I guess it's my own fault. I have seen many other users on the Internet who have the same problem but none of them appears to have a fool-proof resolution to this issue.
Thus, I thought I'd come here, get my best begging trousers on and grovel to Apple and to the learned users here to see if there is something that I can do to get everything working again so that I can continue to bask in the MacBook Pro glory knowing that my Vista installation is reliable.
    Grovelling over,
    Mr Cuttle.

Do you have anything against running Windows in a VM (virtual machine) under OSX to do your work? On the unibody, this is much more stable than boot camp in my experience.
here are the steps I took
    1) install smcfancontrol in OSX
    http://www.eidac.de/
    2) install virtualbox free virtualization software from Sun Microsystems
    http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.2.2/VirtualBox-2.2.2-46594-OSX.dmg
    3) install Windows using virtualbox like normal; use smcfancontrol to bump fan speeds if it runs hot (normally not needed unless you watch video or game).
    4) turn on seamless mode and run your windows apps side by side with OSX apps for free.
if you have issues setting it up, read here:
    http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html
this video shows how it works, albeit with a weird Japanese game app instead of Visual C++
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z47MKa9Jdwk
and this screenshot that I took shows just how much you can do with this:

    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

  • Macbook Pro 15 Late 11 extreme fans noise when using external monitor

Dear Apple, recently I bought Macbook Pro 15 Late 11. I really love it's speed and new OS X Lion, BUT this Macbook really noisy when I use external monitor and keyboard. I work on external monitor all the time. I don't care about how hot my Macbook is when I'm on external monitor. Let it just be hot and quiet.
P.S. Example. I run Ableton Live and have 6200 RPM working on external monitor (awfully loud!). CPU 90% idle. When I switch off external monitor and use internal one, RPM drops down to 4500 with the same Ableton work session. By the way, I don't need cool graphic card. Apple, let our work days be quiet.

I did that and it didn't help. It's common problem with an external monitor. Here are some links:

  • Macbook Pro 15" Late 2011 - Running Extremely Slow

I've only had my Macbook Pro for about 9 months. Lately it's been running EXTREMELY slow, and freezing up at some times. I have a RAM monitor, and it will sometimes drop below 192MB! I have 4GB installed, and I only run a few light-weight applications, No Final Cut, or Photosop. On a typical day I'll have the following open at once: Safari, Spotify, Minecraft, Mail, Messages
Nothing 4GB can't handle right? I guess not. I don't download from untrusted websites, so I doubt it's a virus. I honestly have no clue. I don't have the Apple Care, and I'm not sure if this is covered in the 1yr limited warranty that is included with the computer. Hopefully someone can help me resolve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Caleb.

  • Reinstal Mac OS X, iWork09, iLife09 on Late 2008 Macbook Pro unibody ques?!

Alright so I've got a quick question for you knowledgeable people, I've got a late 2008 macbook pro unibody and has unfortunately installed some crap on my hard drive since i got it, and i want to be just like i got it out of the box. I want to delete everything off my hard drive, like completely erase, do I do that using the disk utility application or could i erase it completely with the mac OS X install disk that came with my mac? That's the specs of my harddrive(Hitachi Media Total Capacity : 232.9 GB (250,059,350,016 Bytes). When I reinstall my mac OS X, I will be waiting for Snow leopard (because its only $30 bucks if an upgrade), since they say the footprint of that O.S. will be considerably smaller that os x. but before i install snow leopard i want to reinstall my iwork and iLife programs, which are both 09. This leads to the next question that i have, my mac shipped with iLife and iWork 08 and I bought versions 09 after. They are single licenses and I want to know if I will be able to reinstall iWork09 and iLife09 after my reinstall of OS X without buying them again.
Thanks for any help in advance.;)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Here's an article on Installation options:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US
It should give you clear instructions on how to proceed. You will boot from your install disc to do the Erase and Install. To erase the boot drive, you will use the Disk Utility that is on your install disc.
You have the iLife 09 and the iWork 09 discs? Then you should be able to reinstall them from the discs after installing the OS. The single license means that you are licensed to use them on only one computer at a time.
Be sure to make a good backup of anything you want to keep before erasing your drive and reinstalling the OS.
Incidentally, you can save a few GB's of space if you do a custom installation and eliminate any languages and printer drivers you won't ever use.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro Kernel_Task over 300% ; laptop running very slow

My new (4 week old) MacBook Pro suddenly this weekend started running very slow with the fan running constantly. I found the "kernel_task" was running the CPU over 300%. I tried various methods mentioned in different threads but nothing worked. I eventually went all the way to wiping the disk and reinstalling the OS. This has NOT fixed the problem. I do not know where to go next. I am posting a copy of the EtreCheck report I ran, and I am looking for any help.
The next step is taking this thing back to the Apple store. I love my MacBook, but not when it is not lagging like something running Windows ME. I expected more out of this machine than this.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
    high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.
