Macbook pro very slow at startup, with often "repair disk" demand
I have a mid2009 15'' macbook pro. I have an issue of it being veery slow and some times non-responsive for no reason. It also takes a considerable extended time to startup.
I use only 35-40% of the HD, i have the least posible apps opening at startup, i keep desktop clean etc.
Another thing that is strange is that very often when i perform VERIFY DISK, most times it sais i need to repair from partition (can happen even every day or two)
Is my disk failing? Is there any way to test it?
Note: My optical drive is not working any more (like the drive of every mac owner after 2-3 years ) so i cant use the Hardware Test Cd.Is there any other way?

Use an external drive.

MacBook Pro Very Slow at startup
For the last couple months, my MacBook Pro (running Mac OS X 10.6.5) has been incredibly slow at startup. It used to take seconds to go from shutdown to ready for use. Now it takes a few minutes. The computer also freezes up twice (with the spinning "rainbow" wheel icon) for anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple minutes the first time I open any program after startup.
The computer generally works normally after that. It wakes up from "sleep" quickly and doesn't have any hangups. It just seems to be messed up when starting up after a shutdown.
I'm fairly new to Macs and can't seem to find any kind of system diagnostic or hard drive scan utility on my system to run to check my system, which would be the first things I'd have done with a similar issue with a PC.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. That indicates the HD is failing. Backup immediately while it's still working and take it in for repair. It's in your best interest to make an appointment at the Genius Bar, if you have never done this the link is noted below will get you started. Make sure you let them know what you have done and what error messages you have received.

MacBook Pro very slow to bring up homepage, programs won't open; likely related to failure to upgrade Java on Parallels, told that C disc low capacity, disc compression recommended was unsuccesful/failed. Rebooting, battery removal hasn't helped. Can't open Systems Preferences. Suggestions?
Linc, the resident dump guru, will probably be along in awhile and provide deeper insights, but here goes for now. I'm seeing an awful lot of warnings and messages from Chrome. Any chance you could lay off that browser for awhile and use Safari in the meanwhile? No red messages anywhere in the listing. Have you tried rebooting into Mountain Lion Recovery Mode to do a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions? (Cause in spite of what your config tag says, the dump indicates you are running a ML kernel)

Hello everyone! Thank you all in advance for any type of help or advice, I appreciate it a lot.
I am using:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
Running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2
Processor 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB
Macintosh HD has 294,08 GB free (out of 499,25 GB)
I am a student, using my MacBook constantly during the day. Applications that I use daily - Safari, Word, Outlook and Finder are always on; a lot of the time I am also using Photoshop CS6, Skype.
Ever since the update to OS X Yosemite my MacBook did slow down noticeably. I left this issue unattended as I was using uni computer at the time. Recently I returned to the actual studies and design work on my MacBook. I couldn't cope with how slow it was, ended up in forums looking for the solution. I tried a couple of things already (was restarting/shutting down computer in-between these tasks):
1. Disabled FileVault (it was on for moths, I had no idea of what it is), completed the decryption process (it took around 10 hours).
2. After that I ran EtreCheck, that found a couple of actual and potential issues, I more or less sort it out, will attach the new report in the end of the post.
3. Tried to disable Spotlight to affect mds, not sure it worked.
4. Moved to Trash apps I wasn't using, properly uninstalled only a couple of them. Emptied trash.
5. Erased Safari history that emptied about 500MB of RAM, but then it went back to almost 3.98GB full out of 4GB.
At the moment I only have Safari on and kernel_task takes 570MB of memory, used RAM is 3,88GB out of 4GB.
Fan is constantly on, MacBook is very slow. If I understand correctly RAM is the main issue, unfortunately being a student I am not able to buy and install more memory. I also understand that Photoshop takes a lot of RAM memory, what can I do about it? Photoshop is a crucial app for me.
Is there a way to free some of the RAM memory and make my Macbook faster? Would a clean Yosemite install help? (Can Yosemite at all perform properly on a MacBook with only 4GB memory? What will help it run faster?)
Here's my EtreCheck report:

AnnaLet Spotlight finish indexing your HDD. Stopping it is pointless.
Regarding the fans, it is always running when you turn on the MBP. It is a question of how fast. If there are light loads on the CPU, the fans should be near silent. If otherwise, try a SMC reset.
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If that does not slow the speed at very light loads then there are other reasons that need to be explored.
If you cannot instal;l additional RAM (your MBP will accept up to 16GB) then you will have to accept slower performance. Yosemite is a RAM glutton. The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are Owc and Crucial.
Time Machine or any other backup is only necessary if the data you have on your MBP is important. Ask yourself this question: What will be the degree of inconvenience should the internal HDD fail? All hard drives eventually fail.

Early 2008 MacBook Pro - Very slow start up, very hot
Hi All,
Looking for some help. Searched quite a few of the online forums and have not been able to resolve this issue.
A few months back, my old reliable MacBook Pro (early 2008) started behaving oddly. Have no idea why, but went to start it up one day, and it took forever to start up and get me to the login screen. Been like that ever since. Occassionally, when I finally get to the login screen, the keyboard will not function. After a few minutes though, it always works. This only happens about 5% of the time. Once I log in, everything about the computer from a performance perspective seems to be pretty normal In addition to the slow start up, however, system gets extremely hot at the top of the keyboard, near the monitor. Fans run fast almost all the time when the system is powered on, and often when it is 'asleep'. CPU Temp goes to about 170, and the fans are always between 2400 and 3500.
I took it to Apple a while back, and based on the incredibly slow start up time they believed it was a disk issue. I went ahead and purchased a 500GB internal drive and this past weekend used SuperDuper to copy the original boot disk. All went well and I now have a new internal disk. At the same time, I upgrade the RAM from 2GB to 4GB.
After all that, the system is still very slow at startup and runs as hot as it did before. I will say, it does seem to be slightly faster on the startup, but not what I had become accustomed to for the first 4 years of use.
I looked at the activity monitor and don't see any processes hogging resources.
No anti-virus software running.
Currently running Mac OSX 10.6.8
My battery is pretty muc shot, but I never really use the system unplugged.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!Hi there
I am having a similar issue, my mac is the same age but I am getting a major heat issue.

MacBook Pro: Very slow download
Hi, I'm experiencing very slow download speed with Macbook pro recently. Tried download the same file using a Window notebook worked fine. please help.
I was downloading a spreadsheet from Hotmail: Download speed on Mac: 700b/s; Download speed on Window Notebook: 2Mb/s.That's insane.
Are you sure you don't mean 30Mbps?
Anyway, have you downloaded a test file hosted via ftp by your ISP? -

Why is my Macbook Pro very slow to boot and also everything else?
Hi,
When I start my computer, it remains at the silver screen with Apple logo forever. The startup boot is supremely slow.
Even while i am opening applications, the icons keep on jumping at the dock for a long time before the application starts.
The problem started about two months ago however it has worsened a lot recently. This is my etrecheck profile. Hope it helps. Any help will be appreciated.
My MacbookPro is very slow. Here's the Etrecheck report.
Let me know what i should do.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
After upgrading to Mavericks, macbook pro very slow
Hiya
I upgraded to Mavericks and ever since then my macbook pro is very slow.
When I try to open a new finder window, I get the rainbow ball. Chrome is extremely slow. Word is also slow to open, slow to wake, and slow to shut down. Pretty much everything is slow!
I did repair permissions using disk utility, but that didn't solve the problem.
I ran EtreCheck and here's what I got:

Macbook pro very slow few weeks after Mavericks update
Hi,
Please I am in need of assistance. I have noticed some significant performance degradation after my OS upgrade. Slower system, spinning wheels, hanging and once crashing and restarting. I used to be able to run many apps simultaneously while zipping along. These days not so much.
I have run an etrecheck (following the example found in some other discussions). Please see output below. Any suggestions or advise is very welcome:

Audio problem and macbook pro very slow
Hello,
I have a macbook pro for less than a year.
The latter has begin to be very slow. In addition, I have no sound which are emitted from my Mac, setting apart the opening gong. By the jack, there is no red light that are emitted. I tried to go in the program "audio setup midi" but it does not even want to open. So I tried to open the configuration panel go to select a new audio output device, but to my surprise, after an interminable waiting times, I got a list of blank audio device .. .
I noticed that it started when I put my Mac to version 10.7.4 ... So this is very recent ...
When downloading the update, I was editing a script with automator and my Mac was rammed by an HDMI cable has a television, if it ever can help.
I was wondering how to solve my problem.
thank you
Bonjour,
Je me demandais comment résoudre mes problème.
MerciThe startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
No Sound, Safari Slow & MacBook Pro Very Slow after upgrading to Yosemite.
Hi All,
Upgrading to Yosemite has resulted in the following issues with my computer/laptop:
1. I have lost all sound and the sound options are no longer there after looking in Preferences.
2. Safari only loads parts of pages and then takes forever to load the rest.
3. Generally the computer has been slow with processes taking over the CPU and there seems to be a lot of hard memory swaps.
Attached is the EtreCheck. Any help would be appreciated. It appears that I also am missing some daemons that are launching.

Problem description:
Internet browsing very slow, particularly when scrolling on large pages.
DVD will only play sound, video is just a black screen.
Youtube would originally only play small screen, now won’t play at all.
Generally slow all round - lots of “egg timer”

41.90 GB Page-outsYour MBP needs more RAM based on the quantity of 'Page outs' vs 'Page ins'. 4 GB should be the minimum upgrade, 8 GB would be better. The RAM specifications for a 2009 MBP are; 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM. The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

MacBook PRO very slow Tiger performance
dear all,
I have seen this topic many times but unfortunetly none of the tips mentioned has solved my issues.
Basically I am running OS X Tiger on a Mac Book PRO with 1G of RAM.
CPU wise, no problem, as far as I can see the usage is 30% CPU on average.
RAM wise, about 70% of the RAM is in use.
Now, when I use usual OS X application, the whole systems becomes very slow, for example I have a few (2 or 3) text files open with SubEthaEdit, one terminal window open with just a SSH connection to another machine, and then the regular apps like itunes, Mail, Safari, Address Book, Calendar, Transmit and AdiumX running as well as a few widgets like Clock, Calculator and the Stock Market quotes.
Now, for example when I put my mouse on the Dock, it fails to respond immediately, taking a few seconds to actually display the app name.
More over, if for example a Terminal window is down in the task bar and I click on, it sometime takes 10 seconds to come up.
Same with Adium, I click on one of my contacts, it takes 10 / 20 secs to display the chat window, and if I am lucky I can start typing in it.
Generally, just after a boot, the system is fine, but as soon as I start a few applications, the systems becomes very slow, even sometimes fails to respond.
One particularity is that I work with a Japanese username under a English OS X, as far as I know, this shouldn't be a problem.
Other thing is that I enabled the OS X firewall, but I am still experiencing the same issue when not connected to any network.
I hope those are enough informations concerning my issue, one more detail is that I did disable startup items and check if no extra deamon was running on the system (I did Repair my disk permission as well)
If anyone has an idea on where to check next and what could cause this slowdown issues, that would be great.
Thanks in Advance!
Alexis
MBP 2Gz 15" Mac OS X (10.4.6)20 GB of swap? something is definitely wrong. I run more applications than you, which are more memory-intensive, and my swap never goes above 512 MB. Granted, I have 1.5 GB of RAM, but still...
Putting swap on a different partition of the same disk won't help at all. The bottleneck is still disk I/O, plus now the heads of the hard disk must seek farther to go between swap and reading/writing your actual data.
I would open your applications one by one, from a fresh boot, and see which one eats up all the memory. 20 GB is an obscene amount, and points to a problem.
Edit: I checked again. Menumeters says I'm using 256 MB of total swap space right now, but in Activity Monitor my VM size is listed as 5.46 GB. I'm assuming that's what you're looking at in Activity Monitor. Still, 20 GB of VM size seems obscene to me. -
Macbook Pro VERY SLOW since mavericks! Please Help!
My Macbook pro is a late 2012 model, 2.3GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB ram
Ever since upgrading to mavericks, it has slowed down immensely! It was never this slow or buggy with Mountain lion
It takes a good 2 minutes to load mail, finder is very buggy - it will take a good minute to load a photo - which was not normal
I also run Adobe CC design software - and it is very very slow
Safari is extremely slow and buggy, and sometimes shows screens as below:
I was going to upgrade to 2x8GB ram which will be 16GB of ram - will this solve the problem?
Should i upgrade to yosemite? will these problems be fixed please?
I have tried asking the Apple Outlet here in Malta but they are of no help at all, don't know where else to ask!My Macbook pro is a late 2012 model, 2.3GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB ram
