Macbook Pro vs Macbook Air for Aperture while traveling

I have an old Macbook (white) that we've used for years while traveling, but Aperture 3 can't be used on it so I need to upgrade. (My MAIN computer is a 21" Imac). I will use it only for traveling to download photos each night and be able to review them, delete them, etc. and make DVDs of photos to serve as a backup.  Once at home, the photos that have made it through the early  elimination phase will be downloaded (with their masters) to the Imac...then deleted off the laptop.
Question: Is the Macbook Air WITH the external DVD burner, and 128 gb SS going to be what I need without overkill? OR...is the MBP that includes the DVD burner and has the 500 gb HD going to be what I need. Is the SS drive going to be more reliable for travel? (I'm careful with my 'puters.)
I'm an avid photographer, so will be using possibly two full 16 gb cards each day. (I take over 100 gb worth of cards with me.)
Price IS a consideration...would like to keep the price as low as I can.
Thanks.

Sorry I forgot the 4 GB RAM max of the MBP. My recommendation (based on your only-2-choices spec) still stands. I agree that the 4 GB is a very major limitation, not so much today but over the life of the box. The good news is that pages to SSD slow operation but are much less problematic than pages to HDD are.
Laptop 2.5" hard drives basically sujck from a boot drive performance standpoint.
However if we do not constrain to just your original 2 specific choices I would choose a MBP:
• The low end MBP can be had with SSD for +$200, IMO far preferable to MBA or HDD MBP. And RAM can go to 8 or 16 GB via third party as needed; also a 1 TB HDD can replace the Superdrive.
• My personal preference is to sell the iMac and go with a strong SSD MBP + external display as discussed in this thread:

  • 13" MacBook Air vs 13" MacBook Pro Retina for aperture while traveling

Okay team, I think that I now the answer to this but here goes.
I'm looking for a light MacBook to take with me to download my photos into Aperture and do sorting, tagging, maybe light editing for posting online. We are traveling to Europe for 24 days this summer, and I will be backing up pictures for 4 people.
I had thought about a used Air, but the recent price drop of the 13" Retina MacBooks, military exchange has dropped the price on last years 13" Retina down to $1500 with the 256gb SSD, and no taxes. It's about the same as the 13" MacBook Air with the price drop.
Is this a no brainer? I haven't used a smaller MacBook like this before, my old one was a 17" and my wife has a 2011 15" MacBook Pro.
    Any opinions? Thanks, Mark

The graphic card is the same in the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and the MacBook Air, and the processor is similar, so you won't experience any big difference between them, but the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display will be faster. Apart from that, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display comes with 8 GB of memory. Note that the memory in both MacBooks come soldered, so buy your Mac with the memory you are going to need

  • Pro vs. Air for internat'l travel

I am traveling to west Africa in a few months, and I want to buy an Apple notebook for my trip.  The question is, do I go with a Pro or an Air?  It's very dusty and humid in Africa, so my initial thought was the Air.  But I really want the optical drive, do then I thought the Pro.  I can buy an external optical drive for the Air, but I don't know how that would work without electricity (I'll be using the computer on battery power most of the time).  Any advice?

If you don't need the optical drive with you on the trip, go with the Air.  It is lighter and less power hungry (important if you are away from a power source for extended times).  You can buy a USB connected optical drive for those times that you actuall need one (remember that dust is an enemy of optical drives).

As I posted "it is an Unknown", at least to me, what type FW port is on the OPs older Mac.

But the newest Mac notebooks do not have a firewire port.
So he may need a TB to FW adapter, $29, a FW 400 or 800 cable, $??, and then a FW 400 to 800 cable/port adapter (If the old Mac only has a FW 400 port), $??.
It is unknown if the old Mac has a FW 400 or 800 port.

Yes.  You can use one of a higher wattage, just not a lower wattage.

  • MacBook Pro or MacBook Air for college

    Hi guys!
So this is the typical college question from a mac lover, do I get the air or the pro?  Currently my major is undeclared, but I'm looking into engineering.  At the moment I don't do a lot of work with video and photography, but I am hoping to get more into that stuff although it wouldn't be like getting a major or a minor in it.  More like just fiddling around.  I usually watch a lot of DVDs and I have a fairly large music library.  I'm hoping to just use netflix and get rid of some old music next year but chances are that won't happen.
Currently I have just the regular old MacBook circa 2010.  I like it, although it is soooooo slow now like it literally takes 10 minutes to open up safari for the first time after shutting it down, not the mention the screen has started to go awry (which is all my fault, don't step on your macs because it does not end well).  I justt need an upgrade for next year.
I like that the air is light and has a super good battery, however I don't know if I like how slow it is.  I like the pro because its faster, comes in a 15" and is just all around more powerful, however I don't like the battery life quite so much and I don't know if the size would be the much of a big deal.  If anyone wants to suggest the 11" air, I'm just bonn stop you right here because that is not happening.
I'm kinda leaning toward the air, but every time I go to purchase it something inside me asks if that what I really want.
Alright so what are everybody's thought! Thank you!

I recommend you a Macbook Pro (preferably maxed out in the specs). I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and so far it has worked marvels for me. The Macbook pro is a little heavier than the MBA, however i feel that what you should really look for is performance and not merely things like weight (specially if its so little difference). As for the battery, I don't know in your college, but in my we have ALL around the campus TONS of power outlets, so that shouldn't matter. So yeah.. between MacBook Pro and MacBook aire definitively Macbook Pro

  • MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air for online college?

I'm starting grad school in another month or so (MA in Education and a k-8 teaching credential). The entire program will be ONLINE with WGU (Western Governors University). I'd love to buy and use just a MacBook Air, but I wonder whether it will be sufficient for an online program? My other option is a MacBook Pro.
    Any thoughts?

    define sufficient
If you plan on much/ larger video editing then get the Pro.
I own both, and love both,... prefer the Air a bit more for portability, however that is purely subjective.
The NEW macbook Pro and Air are extremely close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics, also HDMI output on the new macbook Pros!. ....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
DETAILED bench tests between the new AIR and the new PRO here:
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/how-to-choose-13-inch-macbook-air-vs-13-i nch-retina-macbook-pro/2/
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air vs. Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse (rough analogy)
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/168509/why-you-might-be-disappointed-by-the-resolution- of-those-new-retina-display-macs-feature/
A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are much faster due to SSD density
"The 512GB Samsung SSD found in our 13-inch model offers roughly a 400MB/s increase in write speeds over the 128GB SanDisk/Marvell SSD"

  • Macbook Pro or Macbook Air for college? (Science/Psych Major)

Hi, I'm a last year high school student that has had a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2012 model) (2.5GHz Intel i5, 4GB) since the end of 2012. It's been getting kinda slow on me and I've been thinking of getting a newer Macbook at the end of the year for college next year.
I will definitely be majoring in a Science/Psychology sort of degree. It won't be a strongly mathematical, calculative degree that requires fancy software.
I'll most likely use it for:
    - Taking notes in lectures
    - Using Microsoft office programs
    - Online research and doing homework
    - Web browsing
    - Social media (facebook, tumblr, pinterest etc.)
    - Listening to music (Spotify)
    - Skype occasionally
    - Watching videos (Youtube, TV programs)
    - Game i.e. League of Legends (maybe, I might just keep it on my MBP or abandon the game)
    - iMovie / Final Cut Pro (maybe, if I keep editing simple videos that are around 3-8 minutes long)
I'm willing to have an external hard drive to hold any extra stuff.
Which laptop should I get? Macbook Pro did work efficiently with all of the uses above but it's gotten quite slow in terms of response time, loading, booting up etc. Should I get a Macbook Pro 13", Macbook Air 13" or maybe even the Macbook 12" (but that's a little less cost efficient). I'd like something light to carry and efficient.

If you're in any way serious about the video then the Pro.

    souvikfromKolkata,
you’ll know as soon as the rest of us do if Apple decide to produce a new non-Retina model. My guess would be that they won’t do so, but that’s only a guess.
With Internet, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint representing your main usage, either a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air would be suitable for you.

  • For a software engineering which is best MacBook Pro or MacBook Air

for a student of software engineering which is better MacBook pro or macbook air

What do you need for software engineering, a large screen? a large disk? a lot of ram  (like for 3d apps)? a lot of calculating speed?
I think that the answer is no to all, but what do you think?

  • IPad mini vs iPad and MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air

I want to buy an iPad. I am trying to decide which is best to purchase to satisfy my expectations and what I would use the product for- the current 4th gen iPad or the new iPad mini. I do like the fact that the iPad mini fits so nicely in your hands but I also really like the fact that the 4th gen iPad has such an a advanced A6X chip giving it awesome graphics and its big beautiful 9.7 inch screen.
I like to take photos and play games and search the Internet. I bring my current iPod touch 4th gen many places with me. I like to FaceTime and email and text my friends with iMessage. I also like to watch movies and tv shows and listen to music and watch music video. However I do not like to read books.
What can't you do with and iPad mini that you can't do with an iPad and what is the difference (besides the sizes). What would you do with an iPad mini you wouldn't do with an iPad or what would you do with an iPad you wouldn't do with an iPad mini?
          ALSO
What is the difference between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air and what are they best used for and which would best satisfy my hobbies while using apple products (listed above). Which is best to get MacBook Pro of MacBook Air and what would you do with one and not the other.

  • New MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6) Freezes while playing Portal, WOW, etc,

I have the new macbook pro that came out February 2011 with Mac OS-X 10.6, and I have encountered multiple problems with the computer running sluggish and freezing up in some applications. For example while playing Portal, the computer will get extremely hot and everything will freeze while the fan slows down, then it will come back, and about 5 minutes later it does it again. Same thing happens with WOW and I'm sure with many other applications. Even will run slow while watching tv on Netflix. It's ridiculous and unacceptable. Is there a news release with a factory defect or an update available to fix this overheating problem? Thanks

Is there a news release with a factory defect
Not that I am aware of. Check Google or call Apple Care as you are still under warranty.
or an update available to fix this overheating problem?
User Tip: How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
Per your user manual: Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
From MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.
    with Mac OS-X 10.6
Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.7 or you can go to Apple's download website to install the combo update. Also, update everything that is listed in Software Update that pertains to your computer.
Check WOW's website for updates or contact their customer service department and forums.

  • Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version?

Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version? What are the negatives?

That is a question only Apple can answer and the purchaser must decide if the price is worth it.  Apples pricing for upgrades in the past has often been such that third party RAM and HHDs/SSDs were less expensive.  However those options are no longer available with the retina MBPs.
