MacBook pro vs MacBook air. Which will last longer?

I am just starting high school and need a computer that will last me through high school and also college. Will simply be doing word processing and surfing the web. No gamut or very intensive things. Which will last longer? Which is right for me

If that is your sole or prime criteria onto which to base your decision, then an argument for the MacBook Pro might be stronger. The MBP will have a superior processor, and a more upgradeable memory/HDD structure. The three elements tend to lead to a product which might have more longevity as either usage or complexity of os/applications increase, long term.
As far as physical longevity, the two are going to be fairly comparable. one might argue that the physically spinning HDD on the Pro may have a lower mean time between failure, but then again it is easily replaceable.
I tend not to focus on these characteristics too terribly much, because my turnover rate for computers is fairly high. I chose the MBA for what it gives me today, and for the next couple of years at most. For me, the MacBook Air is a far better choice. That being said, you may want to consider other factors in your purchase decision.

My Macbook pro running Lion 10.7 will not connect via a wireless network to either of my printers, Epson and HP. Both printers report an excellent connection to the correct network. The Macbook reports "printer not found"
Until 2 weeks ago all worked well. Both printers makes me think some setting in the computer must have changed.
    Any suggestions?

System Preferences>Fax & Scan. Delete the printers and re-add them back in.

  • MacBook Pro disconnected from Time Machine will no longer allow set up same computer

How to set up Time Machine which is giving me the error message that my sparse bundle is already in use

We don't see this error as much as we used to.. I mean we never had a day go by without 2 or 3 requests for fixing the "already in use"
With Mavericks it has much more severe problems which have probably masked the issue.. but it is nice to see Mavericks does fall back into the well worn path laid out by Lion and Mountain Lion.
Nowadays it is not just PC where there the first support question is..
Did you turn it off and on again??

  • If i buy my macbook pro with a flash memory will i get instant on like the macbook air?

If i buy a macbook pro with a flash memory will i get the instant on feature like the macbook air?

Almost, if you up your memory to 8GB or even 16GB (for around $80) AND use the SSD (solid state drive)((flash memory)) it should be an "instant on" sort of setup.
A pretty cheap way to go I must say.  Only a couple hundred extra to be such a fast computer.

  • For a software engineering which is best MacBook Pro or MacBook Air

for a student of software engineering which is better MacBook pro or macbook air

What do you need for software engineering, a large screen? a large disk? a lot of ram  (like for 3d apps)? a lot of calculating speed?
I think that the answer is no to all, but what do you think?

  • Macbook Pro or Macbook Air for college? (Science/Psych Major)

Hi, I'm a last year high school student that has had a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2012 model) (2.5GHz Intel i5, 4GB) since the end of 2012. It's been getting kinda slow on me and I've been thinking of getting a newer Macbook at the end of the year for college next year.
I will definitely be majoring in a Science/Psychology sort of degree. It won't be a strongly mathematical, calculative degree that requires fancy software.
I'll most likely use it for:
    - Taking notes in lectures
    - Using Microsoft office programs
    - Online research and doing homework
    - Web browsing
    - Social media (facebook, tumblr, pinterest etc.)
    - Listening to music (Spotify)
    - Skype occasionally
    - Watching videos (Youtube, TV programs)
    - Game i.e. League of Legends (maybe, I might just keep it on my MBP or abandon the game)
    - iMovie / Final Cut Pro (maybe, if I keep editing simple videos that are around 3-8 minutes long)
I'm willing to have an external hard drive to hold any extra stuff.
Which laptop should I get? Macbook Pro did work efficiently with all of the uses above but it's gotten quite slow in terms of response time, loading, booting up etc. Should I get a Macbook Pro 13", Macbook Air 13" or maybe even the Macbook 12" (but that's a little less cost efficient). I'd like something light to carry and efficient.

If you're in any way serious about the video then the Pro.

Dear all, I have a MacBook Pro bought in April 2011. Last April, it got stuck while the wheel was spinning and I had to force it shut. That cost me my hard drive. Now, it's stuck again. I tried esc, cmd+tab, moving the trackpad on the apple, but no. HELP!

    Dear John,
thank you for your prompt reply. After I sent the email, I left the wheel spinning to see if it would eventually stop. It didn't, but after a while the screen turned blue, so I decided to switch everything off with a forced shut-down. I could not restart with the OS DVDs because I am currently away from home, but fortunately everything was more or less fine after restarting. It then got stuck again, I forced it shut again, restarted again, and now it seem to work but I won't overdo it and will switch off smoothly after writing this (unless it gets stuck again). Last April I have replaced the HD, so it's now just under 6 months old. And, of course, since the crash occurred when I was abroad and had backed up just before I left, I have lost only a few days' work. Still, and I know this will make me hugely unpopular here, with my 5 previous laptops running on MS Windows I never had a problem. Which does not mean I loved the OS, or I would not have switched to Mac.
Anyway, and this is the main reason for this message, thank you very much again for your speedy intervention.

  • MacBook Pro and Mac Air - "external monitor"

Is it possible to connect MacBook Pro and Mac Air and use one as an "external monitor"? And if so, which cable would I need?

    Hi Hello1852,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
To use another Mac as a secondary display with your Mac, it will need to be an iMac, not a portable Mac.  To learn more about using another Mac as a secondary display, take a look at the article below.

  • 13 inch MacBook pro vs MacBook air

I am looking to get my wife and me each a new 13 inch Mac. My wife and I both will be using it for the basic needs, web, email, iTunes and so forth.  She will be using hers for pictures of our family and that sort of thing.  I will be using mine for videos from my go pro 2 and doing some basic editing, DVD making and family trip type things.  No advanced rendering or graphic design, however I would like to do some minor photo editing as well.  I assumed the airbooks would be good for her and the MacBook pro for me since I will be using video. However if the MacBook air would be sufficient for my needs as well I would rather spend less money if it does the same work.  However I do no want to get a laptop that will to be satisfactory just to save a few pennies.  Any suggestions? Thanks

What I will advise you is that the ram can not be upgraded in an Air after you purchase it. If you chose an Air 2gb or 4gb will be the max it will ever have.  Based on this alone I would not get an Air as my main computer because I want to keep my mac for the long term, and 2gb ram is already the minimum requirement for the current version of OS X (Lion).  New MacBook Pros can be upgraded to a max of 16gb (which is agreeably not necessary for the average user at this point in time).

  • I am thinking of getting my first Macbook pro for uni and was just wondering which one would be the best? The macbook pro or macbook pro with retina display? or even wait for the new release in 2013 ?

I am thinking of getting my first Macbook pro for uni and was just wondering which one would be the best? The macbook pro or macbook pro with retina display? or even wait for the new release in 2013 ?

If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences.  If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section.  Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.

  • MacBook Pro or MacBook Air for college

    Hi guys!
So this is the typical college question from a mac lover, do I get the air or the pro?  Currently my major is undeclared, but I'm looking into engineering.  At the moment I don't do a lot of work with video and photography, but I am hoping to get more into that stuff although it wouldn't be like getting a major or a minor in it.  More like just fiddling around.  I usually watch a lot of DVDs and I have a fairly large music library.  I'm hoping to just use netflix and get rid of some old music next year but chances are that won't happen.
Currently I have just the regular old MacBook circa 2010.  I like it, although it is soooooo slow now like it literally takes 10 minutes to open up safari for the first time after shutting it down, not the mention the screen has started to go awry (which is all my fault, don't step on your macs because it does not end well).  I justt need an upgrade for next year.
I like that the air is light and has a super good battery, however I don't know if I like how slow it is.  I like the pro because its faster, comes in a 15" and is just all around more powerful, however I don't like the battery life quite so much and I don't know if the size would be the much of a big deal.  If anyone wants to suggest the 11" air, I'm just bonn stop you right here because that is not happening.
I'm kinda leaning toward the air, but every time I go to purchase it something inside me asks if that what I really want.
Alright so what are everybody's thought! Thank you!

I recommend you a Macbook Pro (preferably maxed out in the specs). I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and so far it has worked marvels for me. The Macbook pro is a little heavier than the MBA, however i feel that what you should really look for is performance and not merely things like weight (specially if its so little difference). As for the battery, I don't know in your college, but in my we have ALL around the campus TONS of power outlets, so that shouldn't matter. So yeah.. between MacBook Pro and MacBook aire definitively Macbook Pro

  • MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air for online college?

I'm starting grad school in another month or so (MA in Education and a k-8 teaching credential). The entire program will be ONLINE with WGU (Western Governors University). I'd love to buy and use just a MacBook Air, but I wonder whether it will be sufficient for an online program? My other option is a MacBook Pro.
    Any thoughts?

    define sufficient
If you plan on much/ larger video editing then get the Pro.
I own both, and love both,... prefer the Air a bit more for portability, however that is purely subjective.
The NEW macbook Pro and Air are extremely close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics, also HDMI output on the new macbook Pros!. ....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
DETAILED bench tests between the new AIR and the new PRO here:
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/how-to-choose-13-inch-macbook-air-vs-13-i nch-retina-macbook-pro/2/
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air vs. Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse (rough analogy)
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/168509/why-you-might-be-disappointed-by-the-resolution- of-those-new-retina-display-macs-feature/
A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are much faster due to SSD density
"The 512GB Samsung SSD found in our 13-inch model offers roughly a 400MB/s increase in write speeds over the 128GB SanDisk/Marvell SSD"

  • IPad mini vs iPad and MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air

I want to buy an iPad. I am trying to decide which is best to purchase to satisfy my expectations and what I would use the product for- the current 4th gen iPad or the new iPad mini. I do like the fact that the iPad mini fits so nicely in your hands but I also really like the fact that the 4th gen iPad has such an a advanced A6X chip giving it awesome graphics and its big beautiful 9.7 inch screen.
I like to take photos and play games and search the Internet. I bring my current iPod touch 4th gen many places with me. I like to FaceTime and email and text my friends with iMessage. I also like to watch movies and tv shows and listen to music and watch music video. However I do not like to read books.
What can't you do with and iPad mini that you can't do with an iPad and what is the difference (besides the sizes). What would you do with an iPad mini you wouldn't do with an iPad or what would you do with an iPad you wouldn't do with an iPad mini?
          ALSO
What is the difference between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air and what are they best used for and which would best satisfy my hobbies while using apple products (listed above). Which is best to get MacBook Pro of MacBook Air and what would you do with one and not the other.
    Thanks!,
