Macbook Pro vs. Macbook

Hey Everybody
I want to upgrade my iBook G4 to a Macbook Pro. I use Final Cut Express and my computer just doesn't cut it anymore. But, my brother just got a 2.2 GHz Macbook, and I started to question my choice. If anyone could give me some advice, that would be great.
I would either buy the $1999 Macbook Pro, or the $1300 Macbook.
I need the 2.2 GHz
I would like more than 1 GB of RAM
I don't want a glossy screen
I like the ambient light sensor
I like the look of the Macbook Pro more
so tell me, is it worth the extra $700?
Thanks

I've also made the switch from a 7 month old MacBook to the 15" MacBook Pro. If you're going to run FCE then you will probably want the Pro for the faster graphics adapter and its dedicated video memory. Video_guy is correct with the details but you also get FW800, ExpressCard slot (handy for eSata cards and cellular wireless cards), and the 15" screen has the LED backlighting. The 15" screen is probably the finest Notebook screen I've ever worked with for image editing after I calibrated it. Please note though that the 17" MBP screen does not have the LED backlighting at this time. I'm also very happy that I moved from the glossy to the matte screen, just seems more accurate to me (YMMV) and I get way less eye strain by losing the reflections from the glossy screen. Again YMMV so to each their own.
I have no regrets paying the extra $$$ to move to the MacBook Pro, it's a phenomenal machine. Will a MacBook suffice? For most people, yes. But again, the MBP is unquestionably the better unit, only you can decide if the points noted above are worth the extra cash. Cheers!
P.S. Only downside to the MBP is that it does not have a user replaceable hard drive like the newer MacBook. At least not easily replaceable. I did upgrade mine to a 250GB drive using instructions I found on a couple of Mac sites but it's not for the faint of heart. If you are not technically inclined then order your MBP with the biggest drive you can afford to save yourself the hassle. Ram is a different story and you can go third party there for cheap compared to Apple. I put 4GB in mine for under a hundred bucks.

  • ? on upgrading to MacBook Pro from MacBook

I need more screen real estate and love the metal look of the MacBook Pro, any comments from anyone who has upgraded, good or bad.
Specifically, have you had any connectivity issues on the MBP?

I first bought the black Macbook for the mobility and I loved it and still do. But I do a lot of work with Photoshop and video and thought it would be better to have a larger display and I wanted more USB and firewire ports. Also, I wanted the lighted keyboard. I too love the look of the Macbook Pro. So I bought the 17" and I have to say it's my favorite computer.
I haven't had any problems with it. The display is much better than my Powerbook G4. You will not be disappointed. I haven't experienced any connectivity problems.

  • Does it worth to move from macbook pro to macbook pro retina?

    Hey
    I have macbook pro with
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
and its good but many people are saying macbook pro 2013 with retina display is the best laptop and has many features so do you advice me to move from macbook pro to macbook pro 2013 with retina display?
    thanka

It's a very sweet machine, of course. Although the upgrade path is a bit dicey. Just my opinion, but unless you have very demanding graphics needs (in which case you probably should have a desktop system with a huge monitor), I don't see the point of spending all the money. Probably you would get more value if you take your current machine and max out the RAM and get an SSD.
It's hard to advise anyone in such matters via the internet.

But the newest Mac notebooks do not have a firewire port.
So he may need a TB to FW adapter, $29, a FW 400 or 800 cable, $??, and then a FW 400 to 800 cable/port adapter (If the old Mac only has a FW 400 port), $??.
It is unknown if the old Mac has a FW 400 or 800 port.

  • How can I transfer Microsoft office from my old macbook pro to macbook air

how can I transfer microsoft office from macbook pro to macbook air?

Assuming you have the 2011 version the easiest way is go to Microsoft's Web site and download Mac Office 2011 onto your MacBook Air and then run it. If you have the 2008 (or the 2011) version on disc you can turn on DVD sharing in the Sharing control panel of your MBP and install it by remotely sharing your MBP's DVD.
Since Microsoft uses activation when you start Office on the new computer if you use the same activation code as you used on the MBP you'll probably get a message to call Microsoft. Do so and just explain that you got a new computer.

If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences.  If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section.  Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.

  • Will Lion 10.7.x run on MacBook Pro 17", MacBook Pro 2,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz ?

Will Lion 10.7.x run on a 63-month old MacBook Pro 17", MacBook Pro 2,1 (2GB RAM) with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz ?
Currently running Leopard 10.5.8 and about to update to Snow Leopard.

It will run, if that's what you want. I'd think twice though. If you want to try Lion, upgrade your RAM to the max: 4GB's(Apple says 3, but your machine will run 4), however only a little over 3GB's will be able to be addressed(limitation of your computer). IMO, Lion needs a minimum of 4GB's of RAM to function properly. In your case, you'd be a little shy. I'd suggest you go to SL & stay there.

  • MacBook Pro or MacBook Air for college

    Hi guys!
So this is the typical college question from a mac lover, do I get the air or the pro?  Currently my major is undeclared, but I'm looking into engineering.  At the moment I don't do a lot of work with video and photography, but I am hoping to get more into that stuff although it wouldn't be like getting a major or a minor in it.  More like just fiddling around.  I usually watch a lot of DVDs and I have a fairly large music library.  I'm hoping to just use netflix and get rid of some old music next year but chances are that won't happen.
Currently I have just the regular old MacBook circa 2010.  I like it, although it is soooooo slow now like it literally takes 10 minutes to open up safari for the first time after shutting it down, not the mention the screen has started to go awry (which is all my fault, don't step on your macs because it does not end well).  I justt need an upgrade for next year.
I like that the air is light and has a super good battery, however I don't know if I like how slow it is.  I like the pro because its faster, comes in a 15" and is just all around more powerful, however I don't like the battery life quite so much and I don't know if the size would be the much of a big deal.  If anyone wants to suggest the 11" air, I'm just bonn stop you right here because that is not happening.
I'm kinda leaning toward the air, but every time I go to purchase it something inside me asks if that what I really want.
Alright so what are everybody's thought! Thank you!

I recommend you a Macbook Pro (preferably maxed out in the specs). I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and so far it has worked marvels for me. The Macbook pro is a little heavier than the MBA, however i feel that what you should really look for is performance and not merely things like weight (specially if its so little difference). As for the battery, I don't know in your college, but in my we have ALL around the campus TONS of power outlets, so that shouldn't matter. So yeah.. between MacBook Pro and MacBook aire definitively Macbook Pro

  • MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air for online college?

I'm starting grad school in another month or so (MA in Education and a k-8 teaching credential). The entire program will be ONLINE with WGU (Western Governors University). I'd love to buy and use just a MacBook Air, but I wonder whether it will be sufficient for an online program? My other option is a MacBook Pro.
    Any thoughts?

    define sufficient
If you plan on much/ larger video editing then get the Pro.
I own both, and love both,... prefer the Air a bit more for portability, however that is purely subjective.
The NEW macbook Pro and Air are extremely close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics, also HDMI output on the new macbook Pros!. ....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
DETAILED bench tests between the new AIR and the new PRO here:
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/how-to-choose-13-inch-macbook-air-vs-13-i nch-retina-macbook-pro/2/
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air vs. Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse (rough analogy)
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/168509/why-you-might-be-disappointed-by-the-resolution- of-those-new-retina-display-macs-feature/
A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are much faster due to SSD density
"The 512GB Samsung SSD found in our 13-inch model offers roughly a 400MB/s increase in write speeds over the 128GB SanDisk/Marvell SSD"

  • Trackpad Fix for All Macbook Pro and Macbook Models.

Apple has issued a update for the Trackpad but the update is only compatible with the newer unibody Macbooks and Macbook Pros.
I have made the following patch that is compatible with all Macbook Pro and Macbook models with trackpad issues. Don't forget to run the registry patch last.
    Download it here:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SNIG71OI
This should fix the trackpad issues for all Macbook Pro models.
    1. Go to Device manager and go to the "Apple Multitouch Mouse Properties."
    2. Go to the driver tab and click on Update Driver.
    3. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
    4. Click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".
    5. Click on the "Have Disk" button.
    6. Browse to the location of the included "Apple Multitouch Mouse Driver" folder and hit OK.
    7. Click on next and it will update the driver.
    8. Double-Click the included "MouseFix" registry file.
    9. Restart and enjoy!

Thanks a lot for the effort you made. Rightclick/Scroll problem is not as bad as before, but its still there. What exactly did you change in the driver files? I'm very interested in this.
I think about programming my own drivers. A good base for that will be perhaps the source code for this linux demo:

  • IPad mini vs iPad and MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air

I want to buy an iPad. I am trying to decide which is best to purchase to satisfy my expectations and what I would use the product for- the current 4th gen iPad or the new iPad mini. I do like the fact that the iPad mini fits so nicely in your hands but I also really like the fact that the 4th gen iPad has such an a advanced A6X chip giving it awesome graphics and its big beautiful 9.7 inch screen.
I like to take photos and play games and search the Internet. I bring my current iPod touch 4th gen many places with me. I like to FaceTime and email and text my friends with iMessage. I also like to watch movies and tv shows and listen to music and watch music video. However I do not like to read books.
What can't you do with and iPad mini that you can't do with an iPad and what is the difference (besides the sizes). What would you do with an iPad mini you wouldn't do with an iPad or what would you do with an iPad you wouldn't do with an iPad mini?
          ALSO
What is the difference between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air and what are they best used for and which would best satisfy my hobbies while using apple products (listed above). Which is best to get MacBook Pro of MacBook Air and what would you do with one and not the other.

  • Macbook Pro or Macbook Air for college? (Science/Psych Major)

Hi, I'm a last year high school student that has had a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2012 model) (2.5GHz Intel i5, 4GB) since the end of 2012. It's been getting kinda slow on me and I've been thinking of getting a newer Macbook at the end of the year for college next year.
I will definitely be majoring in a Science/Psychology sort of degree. It won't be a strongly mathematical, calculative degree that requires fancy software.
I'll most likely use it for:
    - Taking notes in lectures
    - Using Microsoft office programs
    - Online research and doing homework
    - Web browsing
    - Social media (facebook, tumblr, pinterest etc.)
    - Listening to music (Spotify)
    - Skype occasionally
    - Watching videos (Youtube, TV programs)
    - Game i.e. League of Legends (maybe, I might just keep it on my MBP or abandon the game)
    - iMovie / Final Cut Pro (maybe, if I keep editing simple videos that are around 3-8 minutes long)
I'm willing to have an external hard drive to hold any extra stuff.
Which laptop should I get? Macbook Pro did work efficiently with all of the uses above but it's gotten quite slow in terms of response time, loading, booting up etc. Should I get a Macbook Pro 13", Macbook Air 13" or maybe even the Macbook 12" (but that's a little less cost efficient). I'd like something light to carry and efficient.

If you're in any way serious about the video then the Pro.
