Macbook Pro : Which model best for a student? Thanks.

Hi, I'm currently pursuing 2nd year of pharmacy programe, and I'll be moving abroad to finish another 2 more years of my studies. And before that, I want to replace my current Macbook White Unibody Late 2009 model. I know it still works well, at least up to my needs. But I wish to get a much more sturdy and of course, better build quality, not to mention that I have a few cracks for my White. So I am looking at the current Macbook Pro 13 inch, knowing that the higher end 13 inch doesn't really worth for the bucks. I've been comparing it with the refurbished Early 2011 15 inch Macbook Pro, can't cough that much money for a brand new one, hope you can bear with it. I know the new Macbooks are coming, but if I were to get the 15 inch model, I probably won't be getting the new Macbook, rather than getting a refurbished late 2011 model, saving for that I'm just a regular user, lots of works, journals and stuff to work with, so I really like a bigger display than my current 13 inch. Apart from that, I have been thinking to get an external monitor display when I move abroad later on, but looking at the matter that I have pack and deliver that monitor back to my own country after graduating, I don't feel like getting a monitor then, kind of troublesome for me. So I hope to seek for some professional advice from fellow Mac users. Any advice is most welcome and God bless you all. Thank you for your help. I really do appreciate it Hope you have  nice day ahead.
Edit : I have an iPad 3, so I would probably bringing that to class more often rather than any laptop, on frequent use. Knowing that my accommodation is 30minutes away from my campus.. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Are you still looking for an early 2011 15 inch macbook pro? i currently have one that I'm hoping to sell in the next month or two. It's less than a year old and is like new. If you're interested at all in video editing and/or 3d rendering, some hardcore gaming, this laptop can handle them, thoughthe GPU is somewhat lackluster. But for everyday tasks, light video editing, HD movies, this should be able to last a long time. I got it stock, except I swapped the harddrive for a Seagate 500 gb Momentus XT Hybrid Hard Drive. I also got a protective snap-on cover and keyboard protector. If you're interested at all though, contact me.

  • Which 15" MacBook Pro will be best for my planned use?

I am heading back to school and am required to get a MacBook Pro for class (I am a Design, Art & Technology - AKA Multimedia - major).  The suggested specs from the school are as follows:
    15-inch MacBook Pro
    2.7GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB GDDR5 memory
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
I am in the process of researching if this is the best computer for my needs.  I am upgrading from my current laptop - a 2.53 GHz 15" MacBook Pro from '09 with 4GB of RAM and 7200 RPM 750 GB HDD (upgraded from a 5200 RPM 250 GB HDD) running 10.6.8 - which has been holding up great for four years.  At this point though I need a second computer that has a quadcore processor.
    My normal/expected usage:
I will likely be working on projects in web design, some light game design, app design, interactive installation, etc. for class.  I anticipate working on video editing software and Photoshop as well.  I regularly use Ableton Live with an external audio interface, MIDI devices and third party plugins for music production (20 to 40+ track mixing & mastering) and may start to use it for live or interactive projects.  I run an external monitor as a second screen when at home and do a good amount of multitasking work with the second display where quickness switching between applications is key.
I stopped by the local Apple store today and had a conversation with one of the sales reps exploring the possibilities of deviating from my school's suggested bundle above.  We talked about the benefits of SSD's on performance but the drawbacks on storage size to $$ ratio (I need at least 500GB of storage space, preferably 700GB).  The rep suggested multiple times that the Retina display model would be best for me because it is a more durable computer and makes more sense than dropping the 2.7 GHz processor to a 2.6 GHz on the above recommendation and using the money to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD (since it would be a similar computer but without the hi-res screen).  But the Retina models were in stock, while the custom non-retina model I was considering building online was not, so I do not know if the rep was just doing his job as a salesperson and trying to move what the store had in stock...
What I am hoping to get opinions on is: Given my planned usage, will the school's suggestion be sufficient/will my downgrade of proccessing power to fund an SSD be insufficient/does it make sense to really stretch my budget and get the Retina 15" 2.7 GHz with 8GB RAM and 512/768 GB SSD?  Even with the educational pricing and my usage, I don't know if the upgrade to the Retina 15" is justified - but I am not very experienced in comparing computers.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks!

I say DITTO to what Clinton just told you, AND what woodmeister said.
As to use of the External HD  use same for all large media files, PDF , pics, movies etc.
Keep your internal SSD for programs and primary (use it every day) working files of small size.
Yes, I would replace the SSD as upgrade and RAM myself.
Ram takes 30 seconds to do, anyone can do that nearly with eyes closed.  EASY
SSD, youd need to use carbon copy cloner or likewise, clone your internal HD to the SSD, check with a boot to make sure all ok........then install the SSD, very easy, like Clinton said, .....done it many times.
    You asked:
Are you able to reference info on them without moving the data to the internal SSD?
Yes, you can alter, open close etc files off the external HD same as you can the internal SSD, however access speed will be slower, but plenty fast enough for anything you want to do, watch movies off same, work on/ alter/ create files on internal and then backup to external
You need an external HD at any rate for Time Machine backup, and backup in general. NEVER trust any internal HD, or a single copy of anything.
In fact you should always have at least 2 backups for data, in which case a 2nd external HD is highly recommended.

Which one should I get if I am

    -Watching Netflix
    -Doing School Work
    -Editing and uploading videos
    -Playing 1 or 2 Games.
Thanks if you can help me.

Go for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. It has got a quad-core CPU and a better GPU, which will improve your video editing and games experience, even if the Intel Iris Pro GPU is not the best GPU for those tasks

  • Macbook pro 13' or 15' for design student?

Hey, I am an industrial design student looking to buy a Macbook. I am considering buying either the 13" Macbook Pro or the 15" one. I am going to be traveling a lot, therefore size does matter, but on the other hand I'm worried that the 13" screen will be too small. What do you suggest I do?

Personally I have a preference for the 17" MBPs which are no longer offered as 'new' and I have not found it difficult to deal with when traveling.  Thus my suggestion is to opt for the 15" MBP.
Again if I were to purchase a new MBP I would order the 15' with the anti glare, high resolution display.  But my opinions really don't matter, yours do.  I suggest that you go to an Apple store and make side by side comparisons.
Which ever option you choose, defer increasing RAM or a larger/faster HDD.  Use third party vendors after purchase because you will get far more for your money than if special ordered via Apple.
    Ciao.

  • Which macbook is best for automobile student?

I am taking automobile engineering course & I need a laptop.. Please give me a right suggestion!
Which macbook is best for automobile student?

Any of the new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro models will do.  Check their features at Apple.com > Mac.  The Air and Pro models are now very close to each other with the Air a little less expensive and a little lighter (3 vs. 3.5 lbs.).  I would purchase 8 GB of RAM no matter which machine you buy.
The question is how much permanent (SSD) storage do you need?  128 GB, 256 GB, more?  You need to decide this up front and you cannot increase it once it is delivered so choose carefully.  How much storage do you use on a current Mac or PC?  How much additional storage do you plan to use?
If you undersize the SSD storage all is not lost.  You can offload seldom-used data onto an external hard drive.  However it is easier to manage the storage if it all fits on your system drive.
Also check out refurbished Macs at http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals.  These come with the standard Apple one year warranty.

  • Which MacBook Pro suits me best?

    Hello,
I am wundering which MacBook Pro suits me best? I am going to study computer science in Colone soon.
So the MacBook will mainly be for university, but I also want to use it for:
    - Photoshop
    - Xcode
    - Surfing the internet
    - Virtual machine with Windows, Windows Server, and Linux
So after all I hast two questions:
    1) Is 8 GB of RAM enough or shall I upgrade to 16 GB?
    2) Should I buy the Core i5 2.6 GHz of the Core i7 2.8 GHz model?
    That you for your help
    Se7enUltimatePro

If you want to save some money don't bother with the Moshi or Belkin.  You're paying for the name like buying Monster cables, which are overpriced too.  Get the following adapter from monoprice.com.
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support

What is a good solid state hard drive for a Macbook Pro (2007 model)? I imagine they're still expensive, but I'm curious which would be good picks if I were to go for it.

I am using the Corsair P256 (256 GB) SSD. It is actually a Samsung drive. It works well, but will only give you part of the speed advantage due to the fact that the MBP from 2007 only has a 1.5 GB/s interface, while newer MBPs have a 3.0 GB/s interface.
Impact on battery run time seems to only be an increase of 15-20%.
Boot time on my MBP is 40 seconds to login prompt. System seems very responsive.

Setting up new ipad 2. Won't accept my PW for my Airport Extreme (Wi Fi network?)  Where is the PW for my Wi Fi? I am stymied. Can I set up through my MacBook Pro, which IS connected to my WiFi network?

If you could provide the make and model number of the modem that the AirPort Extreme will be connecting to, we can likely tell you a bit more about what to expect in the way of getting the AirPort set up and working.
Unfortunately, "plug and play" does not apply here. You will need to set up and configure the AirPort Extreme using your iPad or iMac to name the AirPort as a device, assign a device password, name the wireless network, assign a device password and a few other things.
Once the AirPort Extreme is set up, you can connect the PC to one of the LAN <--> ports on the AirPort Extreme using an Etherent cable.
The iPad and iMac will connect to the wireless network that the AirPort Extreme provides.

No one knows if there will be a new model and if so, when that would be. However, there always will be something bigger, better, and newer around the corner, so you'd be waiting forever.
Buy it when you want or need it.

I am the administrator of my MacBook Pro, which I share with my kids. One of them forgot his password, so as the admin I changed it for his account, but  when I try to see his account, it says I need to provide the keychain password. How can i get it? I have no idea how to sort this out...

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
You must back up all data before continuing, unless you've already done so. If you need to back up but can't log in, ask for instructions.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead the instructions on this page:
If you forget the password and FileVault is on
