MacBook Pro will not charge, only works when plugged in.

My MacBook Pro says it is at 68% battery not charging but the source is coming from the power adapter. It hasnt gone down for the past day or so. Also it only works when it's plugged in and shuts down immediately when the charger is unplugged. I just bought a replacent cord and this started happening. Does anybody have a fix for this? Here is some of the System Information (I dont believe it is a battery failure problem though the system says its normal)

  • Classic iPod not charging; only works when plugged in

My iPod Classic would work only when plugged in my computer or to the wall. I noticed that when I plug it, the battery automatically turns green and the fully-charged symbol appear. However, when I unplug it, it doesn't work. Any ideas on what I can do? It's no longer under gaurantee so anything that I can do at home would be helpful. Thank you xx

Seems very unlikely you need a new Macbook since it works when "plugged in"; at worst you will have to spring for a new battery.
Try running this program - it will give you info about the state of the battery:

Otherwise, you should probably take your computer in to a service place to be tested, since there a a few possible causes of this behavior.

  • My macbook pro will not charge when I am using it.

My macbook pro will not charge when I am using it. My battery will say "charged" then "not charging" and it goes back and fourth. It says "Power Source: Power Adapter". But when I use my pro it will loose the power source then reconnect a second later to it. This problem is getting annoying because I have to stop using my macbook pro to charge it.

    Reset SMC.

Some basics please, what vintage is your MBP, have you plugged anything else into the wall socket to verify that it is live? which light doesn't turn on, the charger or the MBP?
Hold the power button down for 15 seconds, wait for 2 then press it normally and see te MBP it turns on

  • My Macbook Pro will not charge. I have tried other charges and nothing. Can the MagSafe port go bad? Is that expensive to repair?

My Macbook Pro will not charge. I have tried other charges and nothing. Can the MagSafe port go bad? Is that expensive to repair?

The port can fail. Internal boards can fail. Batteries can fail. All with the result that no charging occurs.
You can try Resetting the System Management Controller and you can try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters.
But usually you will have to take the mac in to a service place for testing.  It can get expensive, although occasionally it is not.

  • My macbook pro will not hold life even though plugged in - I know battery life is about gone; does that mean it won't stay alive even though plugged in?

My macbook pro will not hold life even though it is plugged in when I use it.   I know the battery life is about gone, but didn't realize this effects it when plugged in or does it.  It is about 7 years old.   This is second battery.     Am I right to think this?

You are right - a dead battery can some times play these kinds of tricks.
If this is a removable battery, I suggest you take out the battery and try running it on the power adpater alone.

  • MacBook pro will not charge even when the charger is plugged in and working

So this is a strange one.
I have been using my MacBook pro for a lot of film editing and motion graphics. Recently, I noticed that my battery kept going down, even when charging. I thought nothing on it and kept using it. After around 4 hours, the battery went from 90% to 23% WHILE plugged in. This got me nervous. When I plug in the MagSafe charger, the light comes on and I get the "charging" symbol in my toolbar. The light turns orange and then, after a few minutes, the power starts to go down instead of up.
I have had this laptop since Christmas 2012 and this has never happened before. The laptop does charge, but only when I am running no application, when the screen is shut or when the laptop is powered off. Bear in mind that right now, I am on Firefox, that is the only application open, yet the charge is still going down. I assumed it was because I was using Premiere CS6, After Effects CS6 and Cinema4D, but now even when they are not open, the batter will not charge when I am using the laptop.
What is going on? Is in the charger? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am starting to stress!
    Thank you everyone for reading,
    -Rory Campbell
UPDATE: I am currently only running Firefox and Finder. Now the laptop is charging as usual. However the second I open up Premiere, After Effects etc, it goes down. I have no idea what is going on!

Try resetting the PRAM and SMC. If you don't know how to, don't worry. They're very easy to reset. Just google how to do it. If that doesn't work, the only thing I would suggest is to take both the laptop and the charger to your local genius bar to have them examined. If it's less than a year old, apple should replace whatever is wrong with it as long as it was a factory defect.

  • My MacBook Pro will not charge.

    Hi Apple Support Communities!
    I have a 2006 MacBook Pro 1,1.
This computer is equipped with an Intel Core Duo processor, and 2 gigabytes of 667 DDR2 SDRAM.
It works absolutely fine, but I am having small problem with it: it will not charge. Since it is from 2006, Apple considers it to be "Vintage and Obsolete." I have no idea what is wrong with it, and am in need of it in proper working condition by this August. I do not have the original install discs for it, and have no way of running the hardware test to see if there are any problems. What do you all suggest? Thank you in advance!

    joncwyatt,
you can contact Apple directly to purchase a replacement pair of grey DVDs for your MacBook Pro, which has (among other things) its model-specific Apple Hardware Test. (The Apple stores don’t stock the grey DVDs.)
Was your new battery sold by Apple, or was it manufactured by a third-party? Have you tried purchasing a different battery for your MacBook Pro, to make sure that the problem is not with the new battery currently in your possession?

  • Macbook Pro will not charge.. Help

My macbook pro got a some water spilt on it so I put a fan over it and and used rice to try to dry the moisture. The computer itself works fine everything works like it normally would except that it will not charge. It recongizes that the charger is connected to it but says it's not charging. The charger itself isn't the problem because I tried another charger and it didn't work either. Is it the battery or is it something else that doesn't work? I'm pretty despirate for help and I don't have any warrenty on it so I don't want to call Apple if I don't have to and pay $50 for them to tell me that something is wrong..

try an smc reset see if that works here is an apple link that will explain you how to do so http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

  • New MacBook Pro Will Not Charge While in Use

I'm not sure if this is an issue, however, I have been unable to find more information regarding this, so I thought I'd ask. While plugged in (MagSafe LED=Orange) the computer hovers around the same percentage of charge (i.e. +/-2%), even with very low to no use, and every once in a while says (Not Charging). However, when in sleep with the deck shut, it charges promptly as it should.
I've occasionally seen it charge slightly while in use while using the plug without the extension portion, however I am unsure if this is related. I have tried resetting the SMC, restart, etc. So my question simply is, is this an issue, or is the computer specified not to charge while open?
    Thanks!

As eww indicated, it may be a fault with the charger. The reason for my question was because you can use the 60 watt charger that comes with the 13" model on the 15" model (which comes with an 85 watt charger), but... it will only provide enough power to operate the 15" model while in use... it does not provide enough power to both operate the machine while charging it. It will only charge with the machine shut down. Your symptoms sounded very similar... but as you're using the correct charge, it may just be a bum charger. These types of things tend to fail early on if they're going to fail at all. With it only being a few weeks old, that would also seem to make it more likely to be a faulty charger. Apple tends to be very good with these things. If you have an Apple store nearby, set up a Genius appointment online. There's a good chance they'll just replace the charger for you. It's a good to bring it in though so they can check it out for you just in case the problem is with the charging circuitry in your Mac and not the charger.

  • My retina Macbook Pro will not charge, what are my options?

I have a water damaged 15" rMBP, everything works fine and dandy except that it will not charge. Maybe it's the charger? The battery? The cable that connects the battery feeding power to the system? No idea. I can only use it if it's plugged in which is a HUGE bummer for me. I have Apple Care, but Apple obviously won't help me. I tried and they didn't, I don't think a different rep would make a difference . I know I messed up, but I've come to accept that fact at this point. I was wondering if there is anything I could try/fix/replace to get the charging working again? If there was water damage to the logic board wouldn't everything else stop to work as well? Theres gotta be something to try.. please help!
I think replacing the battery would fix this, but I have no way to tell. Would apple do this since I have apple care? If I just asked them to replace the battery?

Basically, you're just screwed. There are liquid sensors in the MBPs and the liquid damage would be obvious to any liquid damage. You'll just have to take your unit in and get a quote on how much it would cost to replace everything that needs replacing.

  • My MacBook Pro will not charge (no light on adapter)

I've been trying to charge my macbook all day, but it will not charge - the adapter light (green or amber) will not even turn on, and the computer is cold. Is it likely the adapter, battery, or something larger?

Hi  jsfisher13. Will your Macbook Pro start up with battery and power cord attached? If so, download coconut battery app. I will give you a link. I have a 2009 Macbook that my daughter uses and it does not show as charging and will not run with battery removed. What I found is, that with coconut battery app, the Macbook was charging . But it was so slow that it would not show in the apple systems power or at the battery icon on the top menu. The charge rate was between 2.5 and .3 amps.Should be at least 12 volts. or 23 amps. Her Macbook took 8 hr. to go from 30% to full charge. If you can not see any green at all on the mag safe power adapter, even a very faint green you might have a defective dc in board. That is what you are plugging the mag safe into. It plugs into the logic board. You would have to take it to the apple store to have them run a test on it.http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
