MacBook Pro will not finsih booting up after Yosemite upgrade
I upgraded my 2013 MacBook Pro to Yosemite last night, but I encountered a problem when I tried booting up this morning. Whenever I turn my MacBook on, the progress bar slowly begins to load, and then it disappears and I see a grey circle with a slash through it, like a "not allowed" sign. Is there any way I can fix this? Please let me know. Thanks!
Hi Crystalmirror,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that it can be both frustrating and concerning when your computer will not startup as expected. In this situation I would recommend working through the troubleshooting steps in the attached article to help resolve the issue.

First gen Macbook pro will not turn back on after grey screen of death
Hi, i have a first generation Macbook Pro. As i was browsing the web, my computer all the sudden froze and the "grey screen of death" appeared and shut of my computer. After, it tried to restart, but it wont get past the CD rom or hard drive noise it makes once you press the power button. I hear the noise fully cycle once, then it restarts the noise and keeps skipping. Once its done, the computer IS on, but the screen is black and I cannot do anything. Please help! Ive never dealt with thins kind of problem and Im sort of a noob with computers. Is the computer fried? It is after all 7 years old, and I use it daily.
After the startup sound (be precise) after the sound press the shift Key until the apple appear.
If that wont work. Try an SMC reset
Then try a PRAM reset
This procedures are on apple webpage -
Apple MacBook Pro 15 " 2.4iC2D/2x1Gb/160Gb/256V, 07-02-2008, always properly updated.
Lately Iphoto worked slow and stuck many times. After ugrade from Maverick to Yosemite had to upgrade IPhoto as well.
After that the laptop started 2 or 3 times, after that it showed me a black screen.
I succeeded to connect with a firewire cable the laptop to my Mac and could look into the laptop.
Unfortunately there was a power break, and I don't succeed in reconnecting.
The laptop stays warm and I hear (I suppose) the hard disk.
What to do? I want to find my fotos and put them on the Mac.I went to apple today and they told me that the hard drive has unmounted itself. They have my macbook right now and they said they're going to replace the wire that connects the hard drive to the logic board and see if this solves the issue. If it doesn't work they will replace the existing 250GB hard drive in my macbook with a 500GB as they no longer make that size hard drives (cost of £130 for the replacement). The problem is that i dont have my macbook backed up so will there be anyway to get data off the od hard drive?

1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Macbook Pro heating up and draining battery after yosemite upgrade.
On Friday, I upgraded to Yosemite and I really like it. However my computer keeps heating up very quickly when doing simple tasks and the battery also drains. About 1% every 2 minutes when on Safari and having Pages open in the background. What can I do to slow down the battery drain. Before, on Mavericks I could get a whole day on Safari but now about half a day.
This is the report that I got from EtreCheck.

How do I uninstall Yosemite please ? Since I upgraded my 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up
My 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up following my upgrade to Yosemite. How do I uninstall or downgrade back to the previous version of OS please ?
You can't downgrade or uninstall unless you first erase the drive. Try the following:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

HT203254 MacBook pro will not boot up?
My 2007 MacBook pro will not boot up. Sometimes just stops booting before password screen, but other times after that. If I get to put in my password it goes on, but I either get a blank screen or partial jumbled screen. When using boot disc and run hardware test it gives a video controller error 4VDC/1/40000003. Would that make it hang up and not fully boot? I can understand it giving blank and jumbled screens.
Means you need a new logic board. Make an appointment at an Apple store to confirm.

MacBook Pro will not boot up, stops at Apple logo
My daughter's 3 year old MacBook Pro will not boot up. The grey screen with Apple logo comes up and it looks and sounds like it is going to boot up but after 30 seconds it goes black and turns off. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
The internal HDD will have to be replaced. Since you cannot get the MBP to acces the internal HDD, you will have either use Target Disk Mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Or take out the HDD and place it in an enclosure and then connect it to the MBP via USB. (After you have installed the new HDD and the OSX)
You may or may not be able to get information off of the HDD.

Macbook pro will not boot even to grey screen ??
my macbook pro will not boot even to grey screen ?? Just stopped wprking after I closed the cover.
What other indications are there, does the white light turn on, solid or pulsing?, do you hear the startup chime, or bong if you prefer. Can you hear the drive, the fans?

My MacBook Pro will not start up after entering password. Circle with an X in it and 'cancel' below it is on bottom of screen. When clicking on cancel, nothing happens. This just started last night.
Hi MJTOOTS,
Since you are getting to the login screen, it is booting past the "gray screen" phase, so try the steps in this article, like a Safe Boot.

My Mid 2010 MacBook Pro will not boot
My Mid 2010 MacBook Pro will not boot regularly, in safe mode, in recovery mode or from original OS DVD. Is this the logic board?
I've tried resetting the SMC and pram numerous times and even tried switching out hdd's to try and do a clean install on a new hdd.
If I attempt to boot regularly or from recovery drive the grey apple logo appears for a period before the screen goes black and the power LED operates as though in 'sleep' mode. I'm unable to wake it from this state and the same applies to booting in safe mode.
When attempting to boot from the OS DVD that was originally packed with the computer it just freezes on the language select option, this occurs with the other hdd's I have attempted to use.
Any other suggestions to get it working? I fear the logic board has gone and that the repair won't be worth the money.
Thank you in advance.Hi JRC8.8,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in trying to troubleshoot this issue. You may want to see if your MacBook Pro will boot directly to the Apple Hardware Test, as outlined in the following article:

Macbook Pro will not boot beyond grey screen. System freezes.
My Macbook Pro will not boot-up or get beyond the grey screen (with spinning gear wheel.) I've tried all the recommended actions: resetting PRAM, disk repair, permissions repair, re-boot in safe mode etc but still the problem persists. When viewing the safe-boot in verbose mode, the system seems to hang at the stage when it's checking the Airport & Ethernet - the last line on the page reads: "AppleBCOM5701Ethernet: 0 0 setFixedSpeed - logic error, speed any?"
Any ideas how to fix this without doing an Archive & Install?
I'm assuming that if I do an "Archive & Install" then I will lose all my Applications (VLC, Handbrake, MS Office for Mac etc.) Will this actually be the case? Will I lose them.
Any help gratefully received. Many thanks.jfromplymouth wrote: ...I'm assuming that if I do an "Archive & Install" then I will lose all my Applications (VLC, Handbrake, MS Office for Mac etc.) Will this actually be the case? Will I lose them...
Archive and Install just affects the System files, so any apps you have should still be available afterwards. The Installer on the disk that came with your Mac, when you bought it, will tell you this before you proceed. Of course, you can always back out of the Installer if you feel chicken.
Notwithstanding it is still necessary to backup everything. You need to check that Time Machine is set to also backup your Applications folder. It might be set not to do this.
It may not be necessary to worry about this if you have the original installer disc(s). I think any stuff downloaded from iTunes etc can be re-downloaded. However, it's probably quicker to get Time Machine to backup your apps if you can afford the HDD space. It's bound to be quicker than re-downloading the stuff plus any updates. And of course there's those Apps that you have but forgotten about. What about them? -
MacBook Pro will not boot. Just get grey screen. When I hold down control + R, I get blank blue screen.
Which model MacBook Pro do you have?
It's COMMAND and R that will take you to your Recovery partion, not Control and R.
If a later model, can you boot into Internet Recovery (booting whilst holding down the command, option and R keys)?
