MacBook Pro will not power up beyond gray screen and spinning circle.

Hi all,
Everything was fine earlier, but later went to turn on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.6) and here's what happened:
- Apple start up "gong" sounds
- Screen lights up gray with dark gray Apple logo in center
- 12 segment gray circle rotates
This goes on for about a minute or so and never advance to beyond to blue screen, login window, etc., the screen just goes black and shuts down after that. I since tried powering it up about a dozen times and the same sequence of events happen with no complete start up.
Battery is fully charged and 110VAC power supply is plugged in.
Anyone have any ideas that might help? Please let me know if I didn't provide enough info.
Thanks in advance.

You'll have to do the following if possible:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

This didn't work for me, so I did a bit of searching and TONS of pages later in google, I found an answer. Here are the steps for people who also were in my situation:
    1. Take off bottom case
    2. Unplug battery - blurry image here: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/03cC79r5Dx4/0.jpg
    3. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds
    4. Plug a charger in, and it should start booting up
    5. After shutting down again, reconnect the battery and close the case up
    6. It works! (hopefully, if you guys had the same situation I did)

Sleep light is on but MacBook pro will not power up

    Hi a,
If the sleep light is already on when you try to start up, that means the MBP isn't shut down, so cannot start up. Hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds to shut it down, then try starting up.

  • Macbook Pro will not power on without battery installed

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook Pro A1226 that fails to power on without a battery installed.
i.e. will not run off AC power on its own. I have tried 2 other power adapters, no change. All 3 adapters are outputting the correct voltage without fluctuations.
But, if I am in OSX with a battery plugged in, shutdown the laptop, remove the battery while AC is still plugged in, it will power back on without any issues. But as soon as I remove the battery, it will not power back on using just AC.
Is this an I/O board issue, or a mainboard?
I have power drained the unit and reset the parameter ram.
    Thanks

Any update on this? This is the same thing that's going on with my laptop right now. I was at the Genius Bar and they said they can send it in for repair. Takes 7-9 days and costs a minimum of $310. At the time I was there, my computer wouldn't start up at all, because the battery had drained to less than 20%. It didn't even start with just the power cord (no battery in). The "genius" finally got it to work by doing a PRAM and SMC reset. Got home and was able to recharge my battery to 100%. Used my computer for 2 days before I dared to take it off the power supply. Lo and behold, as soon as I take it off the power cord, then re-connect it, it shows "Not Charging". I tried to do SMC again, but no luck. Keeps saying "not charging". Even tried with a brand new battery. Do I have to get the I/O board thingy replaced?

  • My MacBook pro will not load past the grey screen with the spinning wheel. What do I do?

My MacBook will not load past the grey screen with the spinning wheel of death. Anyone have any solutions?

Invoke Safe Mode by holding down the shift Key as you restart. This will do a Disk Utility "Repair Disk" as it starts up (so it takes a few minutes longer) and then load with minimal extensions loaded, and request your login username and password, even if you normally do not use them to log in.
Safe Mode runs the screen using simple, unaccelerated commands. Most things are available in Safe Mode, but things that rely on extensions will not be.
Acomputer that works in Safe Mode, but fails again after you restart, often implicates your extensions and add-ons.

  • MacBook that will not reboot- stuck on apple logo and spinning gear

Hello I have a MacBook that will not reboot. It gets to the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning gear and that's it. I have tried restarting the PRAM, performing safe boot, and verbose method. What can I do to get my Mac back? please help

Try holding the power button for about 10 seconds and try powering it on again. If all else fails, bring it in for servicing.

  • Brand New Never Used Macbook Pro Will Not Power On. Please Help!

Ok so I just recieved my Macbook Pro 13" in the mail today, and when I went to turn it on it wouldn't. The power-up sound doesn't play and I have full battery power. I followed all of the steps leading up to the power-up step so I don't know what is wrong. I also tried all of the suggestions mentioned in the user guide, and don't know what to do next. I guess I will bring it in to the store soon if I can't get it fixed. Kind of disappointing since it is my first mac...

Lol yeh it came almost fully charged. I called Apple and am going to now send it back because it is DOA. Now I get to wait for at least another week before I get a new one. Ty for your responses.

  • MacBook Pro will not power on

Heres what happened, I had my 13 inch Late 2011 MacBook Pro on Friday morning and used it for several hours.
I shut it down (power off) and several hours later went to power it up and got no response from the power button.
MagSafe has a green light, battery indicator on the side shows full lights.
I messed around with it and discovered that if I disconnect the battery and plug in the power cord the unit will power on.
However shutting it down produces the same problem. Also after it powers up the number keys do very weird things. #1 changes volume, #2 produces @and a $.
Nothing has been installed or messed with in months.
Tried the SMC reset but that wont work because it wont power up.
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Should metion OSX 10.9.5 (13F34)

Bring it and the power cord into service.  They might be able to tell what is wrong.

  • Scammed on craigslist - Macbook Pro will not power up

okay so I thought it could never happen to me .. but I wanted to buy a used Macbook Pro and finally found someone who was ready to sell and so we set it up to meet at a Panera Bread.
He showed up with the laptop already powered on, which didnt make me suspicious for some reason.  He showed me around on the laptop and we connected to the free wifi and surfed the web.   When I started to shut it down he told me to select restart - that should have been a big warning flag.  Instead I selected shut down and put the lap top in the case and said thanks and headed home.
Anyway I got home and tried to power it on and - no luck.  No noise, no fan or hard drive spinning.  The power adapter shows green for several seconds and then turns amber.   I tried all of the control, shift, command, power button combinations with no luck.  Of course the seller is not answering my calls either.
My question is - how did he get it running to sell it to me?  He must have figured that out or got someone to get it to boot up for him so he could sell it to me.
    -Greg

Update  - the screenshot from luca16 helped me find the location of the contact pad on the 2009 Macbook Pro.  Also I found I had to hold the screwdriver against the solder pads for a few seconds before the fan started and the laptop started booting up. Thanks Luca for your help!
