MacBook Pro will not sleep when charging and display is closed.

Hi,
My Mac will not sleep when it is charging. When I close my display, it will not sleep.
When I unplug the power cable, it sleeps...
I've tried to reset the SMC, and I think i did, the charger went from green to red etc different colours..
Does anybody know what this might be?
thanks

AIGHT GUYS!
This is how to fix it, and i guarantee u its 90% the cause.!
first of all, if you are a lion user (most likely all of you with this problem) go to system preferences, and then to sharing. turn all sharing OFF. especially printers....
open a terminal, and type in :
pmset -g assertions
This will show u if somehting is preventing ur mac from sleeping. on the left colomn, it should say "PreventSystemSleep" and on the right colomn a number. mine was one, which is probably the same for you guys.
Go to system preferences > Print & Scan > Open Print Queue. Make sure all the printing queues are empty and nothing is in there. You do not need to pause any or anything like that just make sure nothing is in the queue.
Close your macbook lid and look at ur light it should be sleeping. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR U
took me long enough to find out.
dont hesitate to ask me any questions

  • Retina Macbook Pro will not sleep or shutdown, and reboots randomly

My 15" RMBP will not shutdown or sleep and sometimes will restart randomly or restart when it is commanded to sleep.  Forcing it to shutdown by holding down the power key is the only way to shut it off.  It does this when I've created a new user.  I've tried quitting processes, have run ClamXav, have tried to reset the SMC.  It has displayed this type of behavior since I bought it in the summer of 2012, but lately it has become much worse, (refusing to shutdown is new).  Is anyone else having the same problem or can suggest a solution?
    thank you very much

Start by removing "Kaspersky," which is worse than useless and should be removed even if it's not causing the problem.
Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reboot of the machine solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs.  When I close the lid and listen carefully, I can hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so.
This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

    I don't have launch2net installed.
I'm not sure how this will help, but here's the last 5 lines from Console:

  • Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging?

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

Try an SMC reset. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

  • My Macbook Pro will not sleep

2011 Macbook pro on snow leapord wont go to sleep through the energy saver options. Even when I set it to sleep in 1 minute it still wont. The display will sleep but the computer itself will not. I tried closing all apps and it still doesnt sleep as it is supposed to.

Looks like I'm having similar problems to the user whose MacBook Pro wouldn't sleep with the lid open.  I followed your terminal instructions and my readout looks like this:

  • My macbook pro will not sleep while connected to a Thunderbolt Display.

I am getting frustated on this issue after receving little assistance from apple support.  I can put the macbook pro to sleep and all indications are that is sleeping.  It;s hard to tell with a macbookpro retina because they don;t have the pulsiong light to show when in sleep mode like the non-retina models.  I can put the laptop in sleep mode and then return 8 hours later to find the laptop is warm to the touch and doesn't appera to have slept during this time.  I can follow exactly the same steps when "not" connected to the thunderbolt display and the macbook pro is cool to the touch and appears to have slept nicely. what is going on here?  I am using a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad and the issue is replicated when in clamshell mode and when the lid is open.

I'm seeing similar behavior when I disconnect my TBD. My Retina MBP doesn't go to sleep. I get to work an hour later and it is very hot to the touch.
I'm not seeing lots of people complaining, so I wonder if it's something weird I do. Do you have VMWare Fusion or XQuartz running when you try and sleep?

  • My Macbook Pro will not hold a charge

If I charge my Macbook Pro 13" to a full charge, then unplug it, the battery will drain over the next 2 days.
Specifically, if the laptop is "closed" and just sitting on my desk, the little white led light flashes slowly and the laptop loses its charge in about 2 days.  Is this standard?  It's quite annoying....
Should I take this back to Apple and have it serviced/looked at?
    Thanks,
    Lance

  • MacBook Pro will not sleep with lid open, but now solved, very odd.

I bought a 2.4 GHz MBP about a week ago, as soon as I got it home I reinstalled the OS and zero-out the drive. Everything appears to work perfect until I noticed that the MBP will not sleep with the lid open.
    But...
    Close the lid, it sleeps.
Select sleep from menu, it sleeps.
Let the battery drain down with lid open, laptop sleeps.
Whent thru painful troubleshooting process, reseting things, permissions, what is installed, running programs...blah blah blah, nothing no difference.
So, backup the drive using superduper to external firewire and reinstall all over again, just like i did when i first got home, except I did not let it connect to the internet. I went thru and setup everything then connected and performed each update, one at a time looking for what might hinder the sleep process.
And the result is a big fat zero.
Same install process as i did the first time, and same updates as the first time. But now the laptop sleeps perfectly.
Gotta love computers, so very consistant
Just my .02 input on this wacky issue.

Try trashing these 3 .plist preferences and reboot. Reset your Energy Saver preferences.
    HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.AutoWake.plist & com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Also, look at your system logs in your Console application and see what is causing the "wake event." It could be hardware-related. Do you have any external devices attached, such as a mouse or hub? I've seen Bluetooth problems with wireless BT mice.

  • MacBook Pro Will Not Turn On. Charger light flashing

Hi there all. I am having a problem with my late 2011 MacBook Pro, and I have tried everything. I was wondering if you might be able to help. I will describe the problem in detail:
This morning when I woke up and went to use my macbook, it said the battery was 50%, even though it was plugged in. I use it like a desktop, plugged in to a monitor and plugged in to power most of the time. I usually allow it to drain the battery every few days. Anyway, I rebooted it, and the battery was still going down. I tried various things, like unplugging it completely etc. I remembered that my friend had this problem last year, with her exact same model macbook, and she came to me, and I was able to fix it. So, I thought if I followed all those steps I would be fine. I reset the SMC and PRAM. At this point the battery was showing at 0% when the OS (mavericks) loaded, and then after a few minutes the computer switched itself off completely and with no warning.  The light on the charger was sometimes showing orange but didn't appear to be charging after several hours. The battery indicator was flashing 3 times on the first light then fading. It was not turning on at all now.
So, I decided to do what I did to my friend's macbook to fix it.  I unscrewed and removed the back cover, then i carefully unplugged to battery from the motherboard, and left it unplugged for about 20 mins.  I also pressed the power button for 5 seconds while it was unplugged. I then plugged it back in, and made sure the plug was correctly seated, put the cover back on, and plugged in the adaptor. to my horror, this did not fix the problem, as it did with friend's MB. Now the light on the charger was flashing from green to orange, and there was a sound like a hard drive spinning, also the status light on the front of the computer was flashing white. So, I opened it up again and plugged in the power adapter to see what it was. Actually, it is the fan. Whenever the light in charger is orange, the fan spins, then when it turns green, the fan stops! This is with the computer completely powered off. I tried removing the RAM and reseating it. I have tried unplugging the battery, and plugging the power adaptor in. It still does the same thing. There no response to the power button at all. I tried a number of different key combinations that I found on various web sites, it will not respond to and key combos with the power button. It seems to just be stuck turning the fan on and off for over an hour now. I will unplug it, so it doesn't cause any further damage.
does anyone know of anything else I can do? I cannot afford to call Apple or have it fixed. Usually, I am able to fix these problems in my own.. But I'm not sure what to do now.
    Thanks in advance

Can you borrow a power adapter from someone and try that adapter with your machine? That would, at least, solve the problem or eliminate the power adapter as the problem.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, you should be able to get a free test and estimate for repair. It may be something simple, it may be something more complex. But if changing the adapter doesn't work, that's what I would recommend. If it is the adapter you're just going to need to buy a new one - and if you must do that make certain that you order a GENUINE Apple adapter.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MacBook Pro does not sleep when display is closed??? (occasional problem)

Sometimes when I close my MBP display and put it in its case I find after coming back to it that it has not gone to sleep and the fans are running full speed. This has only happened twice (but still twice in two weeks is pretty bad), and it wasnt away for long but I can imagine this being VERY BAD for the computer.
Has anyone else had this problem???

    This is worrisome.
I have the same problem. Several times I've closed the lid, put it in my case, and head home. When I get the computer out it can be piping hot. I'm worried that this may damage the machine, or even start a fire.
This is a new MBP. I've made no changes to power management settings. Since this happens frequently, I've tried closing the lid, unplugging everything and waiting a minute before moving it and putting it in my bad, but I still get the problem. (I even stare it at really hard, willing it to be asleep -- to no avail.) Of course, I shouldn't have to go through The 17 Steps of Putting a MacBook Pro to Sleep. I should simply be able to close the lid, unplug, throw it in its bag and go. Or maybe I'll unplug first, etc. It should be able to handle any normal scenario.
I may have to return this computer.

  • MacBook Pro does not sleep when lid closed

Hi there. I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Before the upgrade my mac would sleep automatically when the lid closed. However, ever since I've upgraded, when I close the lid, my mac doesn't go to sleep. However, if my mac isn't plugged in (running off the built in battery) it goes to sleep. I looked through system preferences and I can't seem to find any settings relating to this, does anyone have any suggestion on what's happening and how I can fix it? Many thanks in advanced.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried: Step 1 Apple menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan > Open Print QueueCheck all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find. Step 2 Apple menu > System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password. Step 3 Apple menu > System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule > Start up or wake: uncheck.    Step 4   Apple menu > System Preferences > Sharing: uncheck all boxes. Step 5 Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable. Step 6 Launch the Activity Monitor application. Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately. Step 7 Reset the SMC. Step 8 Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you clickLog in.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applicationsat first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step. Step 9 Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way. Step 10 If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment. If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • MacBook Pro Will Not Sleep Automatically or Pressing Sleep

My Late 2011 13 in. MacBook Pro has been having some issues lately with going into sleep mode. My Mac is setup with a 2nd monitor, a speaker, an external hard drive, and Ethernet  The apps I always have running, which are in the toolbar, are Kaspersky Internet Security (2014 Edition), Memory Diag, Window Tidy, Boom (System Wide EQ), TeamViewer, and LogMeIn Hamachi. As of yesterday, I was able to press the sleep button and it would go to sleep, but it would never automatically, even after resetting the SMC. I did read somewhere that Boom has a bug that prevents Macs from sleeping, but the article was from 2 years ago. I've only had Boom since I think March. Yesterday, I uninstalled Avast! Free Antivirus and replaced it with Kaspersky Internet Security. That's all I remember doing, so I'm not sure if that affected anything. I know that closing the lid will not make it sleep because of the two screens. I open my mac up at around 11 or 12 every day and leave it running until like 11:30 or 12 every night. Last night, I went to put it in sleep mode and I waited a few minutes, and nothing happened. I unplugged some things, ejected a disk from the disk drive, and made sure nothing was open. A few minutes later and still nothing. I then logged off and still nothing. Finally I just shut it down. Also, on a side note, my computer takes about 5 minutes to finish starting up. Most of my friends and family who have Macs say theirs takes about either less than a minute or a minute. So I'm not sure what been going on there, but that has been going on since about December. Also, all my software is up to date. I have no clue what may be causing it, but my Hard Drive is fine, accept for the occasional Spotlight-caused invalid memory block count.

  • Macbook Pro will not sleep if inactive.  Indicator is solid white.

I've done a bit of troubleshooting without favorable results.  Here's the situation:  The Macbook will not go to sleep from inactivity.  If I close the lid it sleeps just fine, but it won't  if I set the computer to sleep after a period of inactivity.
Take this example.  Display sleep set to 10 min, computer sleep set to 15 min.  At 10 minutes the screen will go black and the indicator will become solid white.  At 15 minutes nothing changes and the computer will stay in this state perpetually.
I've rebooted the computer without opening any apps and this all still occurs.  I've also checked the system with "pmset -g" and everything looks good.  Here is the output from my most recent test.
    Active Profiles:
    Battery Power                    -1
    AC Power                    -1*
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay          4200
    standby          0
    womp                    1
    halfdim          0
    panicrestart          157680000
    gpuswitch          2
    hibernatefile          /var/vm/sleepimage
    sms                    1
    networkoversleep          0
    disksleep          10
    sleep                    3

    ttyskeepawake          1
    displaysleep          1
    acwake                    0

I'm at a loss trying to come up with what could be causing this.  Any ideas?

  • My MacBook Pro does not sleep when it should

MacBook Pro is set to sleep at 11:00pm. Often it does not; occasionally it does. It is also set to sleep after a certain period of time, like 30 minutes. It never does.
    10.6.8.
    Any thoughts?

Then they need to fix it again on their dime.  call them up, let them know and have them schedule a genius bar appointment for you.
