Macbook pro will not start from the install disk
I have a 13 macbook pro that i am giving to my sister. I am trying to wipe my info and put hers on it. I followed the directions on the apple website and it wouldn't work. I realized that i was using the install disk from my imac. Now that I am using the correct install disk it gets stuck with a gray screen with the apple logo. It stays in this state until the screen goes black and does nothing. I also went into system preferences and told it to start using the install disk now it wont even start it just gets stuck on the gray screen. please help.
Hold down "C" while the computer turns on, then choose the DVD.

Actually it sometimes gets a little further, the display will dim and the pointer will appear and then whoop it will turn off. if i do a verbose start up, it will finish all the steps, the white screen will appear and dim and then it will turn off.

Have you tried booting with the install disc that came with your computer?
Find it and then run Disk Utility to verify your hard drive. If errors are found, try to repair the disk.
It sounds as if the hard drive might be failing.

My Macbook Pro will not load from Snowleopard Install disc
I have been having some issues with the speed of my mac, and yesterday decided to reset from the install disc.
Every time I try to load my mac from the disc it shows signs that it's reading the disc, but then ejects it and goes straight to the screen with the apple logo and cogwheel, where it gets stuck.
I cannot get past the cogwheel screen, i have reset PRAM and SMB, with no success.
Holding the option key does not help as it doesn't acknowledge the disc, and i have checked the disc, it is scratch free, an it d the drive is clean.
When running hardwear test it shows up 1 error with my harddrive, (the reason i was resetting from install disc in the first place.)
HELP!The error is for a sensor, so that should not indicate a problem with the HDD. As for your installer disc the Mid-2009 MBP 13" came with Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You might check what is printed on the disc label just to be sure.
I don't know why the disc won't work. It could be an alignment problem with optical drive or something on the disc's innermost tracks. It can't hurt to get a lint-free cloth and clean the disk with alcohol.
You might try turning off the computer and wait a few minutes then restart it. Put the disc in before you shut it down. Then when you restart the computer press and hold down the "C" key immediately after the chime. -
Macbook pro will not start up after installing anti virus program.
Cannot back up - is there anyway to go back to prior to installation of software (last sunday)? I took this to the apple store yesterday and they told me I must back up my data so I do not lose it but i cannot get it to start up to do so. It started several times yesterday but will not today.
This macbook was purchsed on amazon.com last october in germany and the warranty (per the apple store) started in June when amazon bought this machine from them so nothing is covered. I am a foreign exchange student (from germany) in michigan for the year and really need to get the computer going and am willing to lose my data if I cannot get it to back up.
What steps can I take to either get computer up (is there a "safe" mose like a windows product) or is there anything I can so short of wiping system clean myself?

Interesting attitude. Whether they get infected or not is not the point, they will not be very happy to have received it in the first place.
Safe mode will not work. I am not sure what to do from here - can I just wipe out the system and reinstall since I cant get the system to start up in safe OR back up my files??
By "Safe mode will not work" do you mean it crashed in Safe Mode too or do you mean you couldn't get it to go into Safe Mode?
Try pressing Cmd R during boot. This will boot you into Lion Recovery. You might be able to reinstall Lion without affecting your files.

You should have your old OS X disk, the one that came with your computer. You can boot from that disk and perhaps copy your files from the hard drive before you try anything else. Recovering files this way is not something I've had to do so I can't give much advice. -

My MacBook Pro will not start. When I started it goes to a gray screen with the Apple logo and has the spinning dial. When I started in safe mode it will not start. In safe mode it as an error message that says MacBook Launch_msg(): Socket is not connected
If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
This should invoke recovery Mode.
Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.
Report any error messages. -

OK, then try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Since you can boot into safe mode successfully, I'm assuming the problem may be with a bad third-party extension or plug-in (such as a driver for third-party hardware or a bad Flash plug-in, for example.) It can also be a problem with a bad cache or preference file. If the above doesn't help then use a utility like Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.5, Cocktail, TinkerTool Sys..., or OnyX to clean out user, system, and font caches. -

Since you are getting to the login screen, it is booting past the "gray screen" phase, so try the steps in this article, like a Safe Boot.

My 13.3" macbook pro will not power up.The battery indicator light does not come on.The Mag safe charging light flickers green and red dimly.I had a cell phone connected to the USB port.
This didn't work for me, so I did a bit of searching and TONS of pages later in google, I found an answer. Here are the steps for people who also were in my situation:
1. Take off bottom case

3. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds
4. Plug a charger in, and it should start booting up
5. After shutting down again, reconnect the battery and close the case up
6. It works! (hopefully, if you guys had the same situation I did) -

I had the same issue I bought my MacBook Pro in Jan. my harddrive was bad and they had to replace it. I know the guy held down the shift botton for a little then pressed the power botton while still holding down the shift botton and it turned on but not completely since my hard drive was bad.
