Macbook pro will not "wake up" after going into powersave mode?

I've tried everything. I hit the enter key any key for that matter, reclosing the macbook or even giving it a few moments. I've had some issues with it lately. Like a kernel panic last week, tried a disk utility repair option. Fixed some things but NOT this. any ideas? I think we had a recent update like two, three weeks ago this is becoming annoying. Is my macbook dying? The only time my macbook comes back to life is if I hit the power button for a few seconds. Then a grey screen appears along with a black screen then my regular screen.

Hello, Libracious,
It sounds much like your system may be entering what is referred to as 'Safe Sleep.'
Mac computers: Progress bar appears after waking from sleep
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757
Safe Sleep ensures that data stored in main memory will not be lost should the computer shut down due to the battery being drained completely . Prior to your computer entering sleep, Safe Sleep automatically saves the contents of main memory—such as desktop settings, open applications, and other work in progress—to the hard drive.
There are two situations in which a computer will enter safe sleep:
In the event the battery becomes completely depleted while the computer is asleep, the computer will shut down. But when a power adapter is connected or a freshly charged battery is installed, the computer can be restarted. Press the power button as if turning the computer on and it will automatically return to the desktop state that existed prior to entering sleep. This means that applications and files will remain exactly as they were prior to the computer being put to sleep, making it easy for you to continue with your work.
With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices.
Cheers,
Allen

My MacBook Pro will not start up after entering password.  Circle with an X in it and 'cancel' below it is on bottom of screen.  When clicking on cancel, nothing happens.  This just started last night.

    Hi MJTOOTS,
Since you are getting to the login screen, it is booting past the "gray screen" phase, so try the steps in this article, like a Safe Boot.

  • MacBook Pro will not wake up under Windows 7

Note: I've just installed Boot Camp 3.1 and the problem persists.
The first time I put the computer to sleep (by closing the lid) under Windows 7 x64, it will sleep and wake no problem. The sleep indicator will flash. If I try to put it to sleep a second time at a later time, the sleep indicator will not flash and instead stay bright. By opening the lid, the light goes off, but the computer will not wake, forcing me to hard reset.

I have had this problem since I got my late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro. I have posted the problem here many, many times and never have gotten a solution. I have escalated this to Apple support too many times to recall and I keep getting told that this is a Windows fault and only happening to me. Despite me pointing them to these support forums showing many people having this issue. Apple refuse to admit anything is wrong. I eventually got my money back after taking the case to consumer affairs. Joyous.
    Hope you have better luck!

  • Macbook pro will not wake from sleep without shut down?

My macbook pro 2007 will not wake from sleep without holding down start button and then restarting? Is this a serious problem?

You can Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
You can run the Disk Utility> Repair Disk from Recovery ( command R on start)
if that does not sort it I would reinstall OS X

  • MacBook Pro will not wake from sleep

My new 13" MacBook Pro will occasionally refuse to wake from sleep. Touching the keyboard or moving the mouse will turn on the keyboard background lights but the computer will not wake. This occurs without any peripherals attached.  I have reset the PRAM and the SMC ... no help.
The only option for recovery is the hard power down with the power button and restart. Anyone else seeing this?

Yes and I hate it. I am having pretty much the same problem, and have tried the same solutions, also Iupgraded to Lion and there still has been no relief. My computer just runs slower.

  • HT203176 MacBook Pro will not wake up from sleep

My MacBook Prof laptop will not awaken from sleep sometimes. The laptop could be left open and I walk away for awhile. Come back and it is in the black screen status. When I hit a key to wake it up....it won't. Have to hold the power key down for several seconds to turn it off, then push power key to turn back on. Also, sometimes I close the lid and walk away. Come back several hours later and it will not wake up. Went to the Apple store a few weeks ago. They ran a quick diagnostic on my hardware and said it was all fine. They suggested they wipe clean the hard drive and I start fresh. We did and everything was fine for a few weeks. Now it starting all over again? Very frustrating and time consuming to have to restart your computer multiple times a day.
Any suggestions or thoughts? Could it be a hardware issue? Should I let the Apple store run the 7 hours hardware test?
    Thanks.

How recently? I would still give them a call. You may be surprised at the outcome.

Purchased a MBP three weeks ago.  After putting the MBP to sleep it will not wake up.  Shows black screen and makes fan sound but will not start unless power off and then on again and at times this does not work.

    Hi a,
    Try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If no luck, you have 90 days of free AppleCare phone support and a one year warranty. Contact AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple Store "genius" bar.

My MacBook Pro 10.6.8 will not respond to any key of pad once it goes to sleep.  I need to hold the power button down, then close the lid, open the lid and hit the power button for it to re-boot.  I have tried having Disk Utility fix permissions and that has not helped.  I would sure appreciate any and all asistance.

  • MacBook Pro will not boot up after Yosemite reinstall

I see that someone else has a similar problem but a potential responder asked A.N.Other with the same issue to start a new thread - hence this post.
I have a MacBook Pro, mid-2010 (I think) 500GB HD and maximum RAM. I installed Yosemite several months ago. The machine ran more slowly after installation. Eventually it reached a point where even typing a line of characters would set the beachball spinning. I removed seldom-used apps: there's about 25% free disk space.  I ran Onyx on it, which I have used successfully over the years.  I tried all the usual remedies e.g. verifying the disk (okay) and repairing permissions using Recovery Mode. Despite permissions being repaired a number of times, the same permissions - almost every one of which involved iTunes - continually recurred. I made a full back up. I switched the machine off then restarted it in Recovery Mode and used it to Reinstall Yosemite. It did take an age to download and then indicated that it was installing with "22 minutes remaining". That 22 minutes ran to several hours but I had seen this happen before, so just waited. It then went to the next step which is a restart - when the progress bar got to about 40% it slowed right down then stopped completely at about 50%.
I left it running  overnight but the bar had not moved by the following day. I switched the machine off using the power button, then on again. The result was the same - freezing at about 50%. I have, since then, tried to start in Recovery Mode as well as Safe, Target, etc but there is simply no response to the keyboard commands - the logo and the progress bar appears, gets to 50% and freezes. When I did the full backup to an external HD I created a Recovery Partition on that: I have tried starting the machine without the HD plugged into the USB port and also with it plugged in - no difference, save that when it is plugged in the power light on the HD comes on, is static and then goes off.
I frankly have no idea what to try next. I need to access data on the machine or the backup pretty urgently: I am typing this request for assistance on a very old PowerBook G4 running OSX10.5.8 - at least THAT is reliable!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated - I live several hundred kilometres from the nearest Apple retail store and would like to avoid that trip if possible.

I didn't try or allow it time to sleep in safe mode. Out of frustration, I decided to use recovery mode using time machine with my external HD and went back to the last setting before installing Yosemite. Seems to be working fine now without Yosemite. I guess I will wait til Yosemite is improved before upgrading to it.

  • Macbook pro will not wake up

My 15" MacBook Pro seems to be "asleep" and I haven't been able to "wake" it up for over a day now. Even after I hold the power button down for 10 seconds it still will not reboot.

Hold the power button for five seconds to force shutdown, and then push the power button again to restart.
I would do a SMC reset too:

  • MacBook Air will not power on after going to sleep

I have a 13" MacBook Air (2012) that has been giving me some issues on and off lately. The past month or two, it has had a few instances where it would take a lot of time and work to get it to "wake up" after the lid was opened. A few times I had to hold the power and reboot it as it was non-repsonsive and would not display anything on screen (black screen). Then a few weeks ago it was un-responsive for a minute upon opening the lid but I eventually got it to come alive but it was very slow to get going as there were quite a few programs running and it auto-rebooted itself. Once I logged in, it did it again but this time it got hung up on the apple logo on boot and was in a cycle of trying to reboot itself but failed at the apple logo. I eventually got it into recovery mode and went into Disk Utility. It found some problems with the hard drive and fixed them. After that, it booted up fine and hasn't given me any problems UNTIL... yesterday, it won't even attempt to power on at all. It was working fine yesterday morning and I was only using Safari (no other programs running) then I closed the lid and left for a few hours with it just sitting there. I didn't take it with me, drop it or anything like that (In fact, it's never been dropped). I just left it right there where I was using it and closed the lid. I came back in the afternoon and opened it up and waited for it to come on but nothing happened. It wasn't even powered on as I put my ear up to it and listened for noise. I've tried holding the power button, I've tried Option+Power, I've reset the SMC, but nothing happens. I don't know what else to try. I believe this model may have a recall on the solid-state-drive but I'm not sure that is it as it should at least power on and display a folder with a "?" mark if the hard drive was bad. I'm wanting to attempt to resolve this before I make a 1.5 hour trip to the Apple store so any help and suggestions are welcome.
    Things you should know:
It successfully resets the SMC as the orange light flashes green for a few seconds before turning orange again.
I've tried the charger with 2 different plugs with and without the extending cord. I've also tried booting on battery power only.
The power button is not broke as it recognizes it while doing the SMC reset.
Thanks so much for all your help, Silas

  • Macbook pro will not start up after installing anti virus program.

Cannot back up - is there anyway to go back to prior to installation of software (last sunday)?  I took this to the apple store yesterday and they told me I must back up my data so I do not lose it but i cannot get it to start up to do so.  It started several times yesterday but will not today.
This macbook was purchsed on amazon.com last october in germany and the warranty (per the apple store) started in June when amazon bought this machine from them so nothing is covered.  I am a foreign exchange student (from germany) in michigan for the year and really need to get the computer going and am willing to lose my data if I cannot get it to back up.
What steps can I take to either get computer up (is there a "safe" mose like a windows product) or is there anything I can so short of wiping system clean myself?
    Please advise and thank you

Interesting attitude.  Whether they get infected or not is not the point, they will not be very happy to have received it in the first place.
Safe mode will not work.  I am not sure what to do from here - can I just wipe out the system and reinstall since I cant get the system to start up in safe OR back up my files??
By "Safe mode will not work" do you mean it crashed in Safe Mode too or do you mean you couldn't get it to go into Safe Mode?
Try pressing Cmd R during boot. This will boot you into Lion Recovery. You might be able to reinstall Lion without affecting your files.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1533
You should have your old OS X disk, the one that came with your computer.  You can boot from that disk and perhaps copy your files from the hard drive before you try anything else.  Recovering files this way is not something I've had to do so I can't give much advice.

  • MacBook Pro will not start up after plugging in aftermarket USB cord

After attempting to plug in an iPhone 5 to my MacBook Pro 13", the unit shut down and won't power back up. Tried resetting the SMC (no power) and can't get it to restart. Black screen and MagSafe won't show power either. Any help?

I had the same problem. I found a solution online that actually works. Apparently, ur computer doesn't recognize ur battery which is why it's not turning on. I don't yet why connecting the USB causes the problems though.
You have to remove then reconnect the battery connector. Here are the steps, they are simple.
    1. Remove the bottom cover by unscrewing the 8screws on the bottom of your macbook pro.
    2. Locate the battery connector, which should be on the right side of the RAM slot. Here is how it looks like.
    https://cdn.tutsplus.com/mac/authors/legacy/toby%20seers/2012/09/29/battery%20co nnector%20side.jpg
    3. Carefully remove the connector then wait for 10seconds before plugging it back in.
(Your laptop might turn on after this step that’s fine.)
    4. Close the bottom cover by screwing back in the 8 screws.
Removing the connector won't void ur warranty, but if u had warranty I highly advice u to take it in to genius bar.
    I hope that helps.

  • MacBook Pro will not wake up from sleep

When I left for work, my MBP (2007) was working fine, I put it to sleep).
When I got back from work, I tried to wake it up, and nothing.
I powered it down and tried to reboot. Nothing, not even the chime.
I pulled the battery, and held the start button for 10 seconds.
Tried to reboot with and without the battery; no chime, dark display.
Sounds like my firmware fried, and Applecare expired recently.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
