My macbook pro will turn on but screen stays black. There is no sound on start up and keys dont light up. I have done all the resets:
I disconnected the computer from the power cord, and from all other cables.
I held down the power button for several seconds to turn off the computer.
I let it sit 5 minutes.
I restarted the laptop while holding down the Shift key and nothing happened.
Holding down Command, Option, P, and R to reset your PRAM and NVRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379The only thing I haven’t tried is “floating” the computer. I’m not ready to heat it up to the melting point.
I need lots of help!!! any ideas? Its a MacBook Pro 15” or 17.5” about 5 years old. Its about 2 updates behind (OS: Snow Leopard)

Zane W is giving you good advice.  Take it to an Apple store genius bar and have them examine it for free.  You then will know what the issues are and then can make informed decisions.

If the normal restart doesn't work, and you restart on the recovery hard drive, from the choices of things to do window that appears, select Terminal, and in the Terminal window type: resetpassword and then press enter.  You will have a window with the users to choose from to reset the password.  Select the one you want and you will be able to reset the password, double entry of course.

    Make a PRAM reset > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 Also, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If they don't work, that may be a display or GPU issue. Take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller. If you want to know which is the part, connect an external display

My computer  will turn on, but the monitor, keyboard, and mouse do not respond at all. I can't do anything to try and fix It. I booted it once and it tried to do an automatic repair, but then the screen went black and nothing after that. I have tried unplugging everything, and waiting a while, but I still get nothing.

  • My macbook pro will turn on but will not start up.

My macbook pro ['08 Silver keys] will turn on but will not start up. Screen is black and keyboard is unresponsive, besides power button. Help!

ugh, no chime is not good, as that means it is not getting past the firmware POST phase.  Is the sleep light blinking fast?
One thing to try is to access the RAM slots, remove, then replace and reseat the RAM.

  • MacBook Pro using power adapter but not charging.

My MacBook Pro is plugged in w/the power adapter, the green charging light is on, but my battery percentage is only showing 15% and is not increasing.  It was actually at 60% this afternoon...went to 22% and now is @ 15%.

Could be bad battery or faulty charger or faulty charging circuitry. Take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • MacBook Pro will turn on, but won't go past the gray screen.

Earlier today, my MacBook Pro took a small tumble to the ground.  I did not shut off, but it was working a bit slower. I decided to do a restart on it and now it will turn on, I can hear the CD drive is still operational, but it gets to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinner at the bottom and sits there.  Any suggestions or thoughts?

    Use Target Disk Mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
You will need a Firewire cable.
Another option is to extract the HDD from the MBP, place in an enclosure and then connect it to the iMac.
    Ciao.

  • My new MacBook Pro will not allow me to log on.

I got my mac book pro for christmas 2011, so its practically brand new. When i turn it on, i click on the log in place where i would put my password, but the area wont stay selected. None of my keys work aswell. when i press on a key, a beeping sound happens. like as if its not permitted. I can use all my control keys at the top such as playing music, changing my brightness , adjusting my volume levels, ect. What do i do?!?

Try doing an SMC reset per this knowledge base article.
If that doesn't help, you may need to visit an Apple genius bar and have the technicians check to see why the keyboard isn't working right.

  • My MacBook Pro will turn on but goes to the logo and loads.. But after loading it won't turn on

I clicked to turn my MacBook on.. It goes to the apple logo and loads like it's going to turn on afterwards. But then, the logo just sits there for hours. What exactly is wrong and how can I fix this???

It's hard to offer troubleshooting suggestions other than the basics when the OS system is unknown.  Each OS has it's own troubleshooting and/or diagnostics.

Sleep light is on but MacBook pro will not power up

    Hi a,
If the sleep light is already on when you try to start up, that means the MBP isn't shut down, so cannot start up. Hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds to shut it down, then try starting up.

My MacBook Pro will not connect to my home wifi but will connect everywhere else. My other Apple devices (I-pad, I-touch, another MacBook Pro) connect to the router without problems. It was working fine but all of a sudden stopped working. Thanks!

    try this.
get back into your router's settings and start deleting devices that are not connected to your router.
you can also delete the ones that are connected - they'll connect again.
on the DHCP side of it, increase the amount of users that can connect/log in to your router.
see if that sorts it out for you.
    good luck.

    Yes.
    Password doesn't work?
If so, try resetting it. If the computer is having any other problem, take it  to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Reset Password starting from Recovery HD
Start the computer, then press and hold down command and R keys to start into recovery partition.
When you see the Apple logo, release the keys.
Wait until  OS X Utilities window shows up.
Move the mouse to the menubar at the top and click "Utilities", then select "Terminal"
    from the drop down.
    Terminal window will appear.
Type in   resetpassword   and press enter on the keyboard.
    Leave the Terminal window open.
Reset Password Utility window will open with Macintosh HD selected.
Select the user account from the popup menu box.
    Enter a new password.
Reenter the new password for the user.
    Enter a hint.
    Click the "Save" button.
Click  in the menubar and select Restart.
If Keychain dialog box appears, select “Create New Keychain”.
    Best.
