MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display RAM Failure?
Hi there!
I just bought a new MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display on Christmas at an Apple Retail Store, and I was experiencing some lag. The lag occurred when creating simple graphical animations, like swiping to reveal Mission Control. So I took it in. The diagnostics were fine, so they said that they'd try and repair it. After a few days, I got a call and they told me that I have bad RAM. And being a computer freak, I understand that it is part of the lo-bo. Now they have to order an entirely new logic board, and I have to wait even longer.
For $1700, that was disappointing. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Well, I was told that nobody in the Apple Retail Store had seen this specific problem before. I couldn't find anything on the Internet either. I wanted to know if there was someone else who's MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display's Hynix RAM slowed down graphical performance, because it sounds odd. I am aware that defects are common, but this seems, again, particularly queer.

Macbook pro with or without retina display?
I am looking to purchase a macbook pro for the next couple of years for my studies, which will be for College and University. However, I am very unsure whether to go for the macbook pro with retina display (15 inch) or the one without. This is due to the fact that the one with retina display has 256 GB flash storage, and I will be storing music, pictures and word/powerpoint documents that will accumulate over the next few years. Is this enough storage? Will I need more? I really like the screen/display on the retina macbook pro, and would love to go with it, however I do not know if 256 GB is enough compared to the 500 GB that the 15 inch non-retina macbook pro offers. Please help! All help would be VERY appreciated.
nba123 wrote:
whatever I have will be with me for the next 4-5 years...should I go with the non-retina because of this?
It doesn't directly follow that you should limit yourself to the non-Retina, because it depends on how much storage you need. If the amount you need in the next 5 years is within the Retina storage amounts you can afford, then of course the Retina would work fine. Now, to work out what you would need in the next 5 years...
nba123 wrote:
Also do you think I will need 256gb or 500gb? which is more likely for me?
We can't guess that for you, because it depends on your individual storage habits. You said you would need to store "music, pictures and word/powerpoint documents." You would need to start with what you currently store, and then have an idea of how fast you accumulate them. The numbers can vary widely depending on how fast you grow your music and photo collections, and the sizes of the files. For example, a person using a DSLR camera shooting 24-megapixel raw files will have a photo collection that grows in size much faster than someone who only stores JPEG files from a camera phone.
I wouldn't worry about Word or PowerPoint files as those tend to be quite small. What consumes disk space the fastest is digital media: Music, photos, and videos. Especially HD videos. You can store maybe 100 Word files in the space taken up by a single music CD. A single 5-minute HD video can use up the same space as over 1000 Word files.
Also, you will want to leave at least 50GB unused so that the system has enough room to manage temporary files like virtual memory and temp files, some of which can be rather large. If after you run the numbers you will need over 200GB or so, then you should be looking at the 500GB to avoid space issues. For most users, 256GB of total disk space seems to be enough though. -
15" Macbook Pro with or without retina display - heavy use
I work in online marketing, and just about live on my computer. I have tons of photos, some videos and music, but also a lot of files that I access via a personal and a professional DropBox. I have a 1TB backup drive that I use for Time Machine. I also travel a lot for work, and currently am running out of room on my existing Macbook Pro, and am torn over which model to get next.
I currently have a 15" mid-2009 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.2
Processor: 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Hard drive: 500GB
USED: 431GB (yeah I know that's a lot)
Here's my concern. I love how fast it was, but it's getting slow as I have more and more stuff on it. It's got some dings and dents from being carted all over the country, and I've had to replace the screen once (I cracked it..) so now there's some dirt underneath it that I keep meaning to clean but just haven't gotten around to it. I have the 1TB backup drive, but it's not easily portable. And I frequently (always) multitask, so need a computer that can handle having everything opened and running multiple programs at a time (5- 10 programs depending on what I'm doing). I have the glossy screen (holy glare!) and if I stay with the non-retina, would definitely get the anti-glare hi res screen.
Based on all of the above, which makes more sense for me to get?
15" Macbook Pro with Retina ($2,799)
2.6GHz Quad Core i7
8GB 1600 MHz DDR3L (do I need to upgrade to the 16GB? no, right, seeing as how I have just 4GB now?)
512GB SSD (concerned this won't be enough - do I just spend another $100 and get a portable external drive?)
15" Macbook Pro Anti-Glare Hi Res ($2,499)
2.6GHz Quad Core i7
8GB 1600 MHz
1TB Serial ATA Drive
Here's my last question - based on what I've read, the SSD is significantly faster than the traditional drives, is this true? If so, does it make sense to just go with the retina display and purchase an external HD so that I have more room?
Thanks so much!I would go with the 512 SSD if your going for speed. The 1tb Ata will hold more but you will notice perfomance slowing down once you fill up past around 700 gigs
Also the make 500gig passport external drives that are about the size of a smartphone and are extremely portable and will not effect the speed of your computer -
I'm wondering how I can tell the differences between the late 2013 model and the early 2013 model of MacBook Pro with 13-inch retina from the box?
You can enter the serial number in the appropriate field on a web site such as this and it will tell you what model it is:

MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display and SSD upgrade?
Looking to upgrade to a SSD in my MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display. Are there ones that work better in a MacBook Pro?
In theory at least, any SSD will work fine. There are some additional considerations to make, however. It mostly revolves around updating the drive's firmware. Many SSD companies do not offer Mac-friendly ways to perform this procedure. From the list Clinton provided, you can drop Corsair and Samsung immediately for this reason.
I would not consider OWC, Intel, or any SSD that uses a Sandforce chipset because of spotty reliability. Yes, improvements have been made, but I still do not trust them. Of the dozens of SSDs I've owned and deployed over the last 2-3 years, the only ones to need replacement were ones with Sandforce.
That leaves Crucial, Plextor, and OCZ. The former two basically use the same Marvell chipset. While I can't speak for Plextor, Crucial's firmware updates are OS agnostic. You simply down an .iso file, burn it to CD, boot from that disc, and perform the update. It works perfectly on a Mac. Doing a quick check of Plextor's support site, it seems the proedure is the same.
For OCZ, I'm only focusing on the Vector and Vertex 4. The former is brand new, having just hit the market within the last couple weeks. If you're looking to buy right now, I would stick with the Vertex 4 as it's a more proven commodity. OCZ has created a suite of tools that you copy to a USB flash drive. You can boot from it, and it takes you to what I think is a very heavily modified Linux distribution. From there, you can do a firmware update, check drive health, and perform a SATA secure erase to return the drive to its "out of the box" state. To get the most from the tools, you should have a USB mouse plugged in. Also, firmware updates require the use of a hard-wired Ethernet cable; you can't use wireless.
Bottom line - for an SSD upgrade, stick with Crucial, Plextor, or OCZ as they are the most Mac-friendly (aside from original Apple parts, of course). -

Recently purchased a Macbook Pro with screen of retina of 13,3 inches. My question is, can I install the new Final Cut Pro X , is capable of withstanding the app? Or that Final Cut is convenient to install?
Generally any Mac made since 2009 can handle FCP X.
Your small screen is not ideal unless you are young and have good vision.
However, you needn't ask whether or not your computer is suitable as you can find out yourself by downloading the free 30 day trial.

In addition, to get you up to speed with FCP X, you can also watch 2 hours of free video tutorials here

I got the following message after the crash, it happens a few times a day, my system is the base with 16gb ram late 2013 15" macbook pro retina. it only happens when i am connected to an external display, I do have a converter from vga to displayport. also, i run 4 different browsers in incognito mode as i do web testing and also have about 30 tabs open and excel and a few other apps open, not sure if this is what makes it happen or if it is the external display? it is under warranty, so if you see anything below that may relate to the hardware i can bring it in and get it fixed.

Sounds like you are having trouble with the screen on your Macbook. If you are not getting anything on the screen, take a look at this article.

Macbook Pro with or without Retina for college?
I'm either going to buy the 15-inch 2.6 GHz Macbook pro or the 15-inch 2.3 GHz Macbook pro w/ Retina display. Cost is relatively the same and that's how much I'm willing to spend. I plan on using my computer to store my music, watch movies, and do some occasional video and photo editing. Of course, all my school work will be done on this computer too. It seems like I can get a lot more for my money by purchasing the Macbook w/o retina (but then, am I really going to feel a noticable difference?). Is the retina screen that much superior to the non-retina screen (esp. if I order the non-retina with 35% extra pixels?)
Thanks!nba123 wrote:
whatever I have will be with me for the next 4-5 years...should I go with the non-retina because of this?
Macbook Pro Mid 2012 15" Retina - Display blackout on restart.
I am having a major issue with my 15" Retina MacBook Pro (mid 2012). When I shutdown the Macbook, and boot it again later, it is not showing anything on screen.. Even the grey screen on bootup.. Completely black.. I can hear the startup chime, and a bit later, keyboard backlight turns on, which is indicating that the boot process is completed.. But no display.. Even for 15-20 min.. I cant even access Bootcamp and Apple Hardware test.. (Even if they are available, I can't see them on screen.. Fully black.. And I can't know where to click on what, in that darkness..)
But one small thing I found was, when the keyboard lights up, I just closed the lid.. It then goes to sleep.. Again opened it.. I found the screen working normal, after a small flashing of Blue screen.. I'm thinking that this problem occurs only at startup, but not at sleep.. This is not a solution, but a temporary remedy..
Can anybody help me over this issue..??Hey SreeHarsha Vardhan,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Sounds like you are having trouble with the screen on your Macbook. If you are not getting anything on the screen, take a look at this article.

What is the best antiglare film for the Macbook Pro 15.4 inch retina?
I personally don't like glossy films but nearly all computers these days come with such a display. I am looking for a good antiglare cover for my screen. I would prefer that the cover not disrupt the color quality of the display but at the same time I would like it to not be a permanent stick-on film. I know that in banks and such official places they have these privacy protectors that are put on and then removed from screens. Is such available on the market?
Apple sells the Moshi anti Glare screen protector.

I dot have any personal experience with these, but they look like they may be a nice add on. -

MacBook Pro with 30 inch Cinmea HD - Mirroring
I just discovered that when I have my Cinema HD display connected to my MB Pro and I have the lid of the MB Pro closed then I don't have to use two displays - the MB Pro's and the Cinema HD display - and that the menu bars etc all appear on the Cinema HD screen. Which is great and just what I wanted.
However, I have noticed that the fan on the MB Pro is now running more frequently presumably because the vents don't have great access to air.
Could this harm the computer?I don't think the air vent access is affected at all by having the lid closed.. the vents are at the back. probably what is more likely to be happening is that using a large display like a 30" is making your computer's graphics GPU work quite a bit harder, which is generating a lot more heat.

Hi, I have a page in which users fill out a form and then ithey press the send button. The send button generates a request to a servlet via the GET method and passes it all the arguments. Now the user is taken to another page (LETS call it 'PAGE A').
