Macbook Pro with Dual hard drives. Scratch Disk, Memory 64bit, Raid, Set Up Questions.

Hello, this is my first post.
I just upgraded from the original 2006 17" Macbook Pro to a refurbished 13" Macbook Pro 2.53GHZ 4GB Ram (2009 model).
I bought the MCE Tech Optibay and installed it (if you dont know anything about it, ask me, its amazing.) So now I have 2x 500GB 7200RPM Seagate hard drives installed.
I am running Snow Leopard, CS3, Lightroom 1.4.
I have the main hard drive set up with Snow Leopard and all the Applications. I keep all my files on external firewire 800 drives, except files I am currently working on.
The second hard drive is set up as a scratch disk for Photoshop CS3 and that is it.
I am looking to upgrade to CS5 and Lightroom 3 here within this month or so. Or if I get anxious, tomorrow, haha.
I want to know the best setup I can do with my current set up with CS3 and for my future setup with CS5.
Any info will appreciated.
-Would some kind of raid set up with my internal drives be better? How does raid work with scratch disks?
-If I upgrade to 8GB memory in my macbook pro, would I even see a difference in performance if I didn't have a scratch disk? Since CS5 and Snow Leopard can use more memory in 64bit.
I think thats all I have on my brain right now. I may have more questions, or I can guarantee I will have more later.
Thanks alot.

First the scratch. Like you said, most everyone has a different take on scratch discs but I'd guess you're wasting one heck of a lot of hard drive space using all 500 GB for Scratch, did I read that right? If I did read it correctly YES, partition it and get some use out of it!!
I've got a unibody MBP 2.93GHz, OS 10.5.8, CS3 & PS 5 (running in 32bit mode), and 8 gigs of ram. I've partitioned the one 300 GB drive so 50GB is scratch, the other partition is for OS, & Apps, and documents (images).
I use LR 2 first than export to PS 5 to finish up. My photos get to be 300MB to 500MB in size and both versions of PS work on this setup just fine. Using PS 5 in 64 bit mode is faster opening files but NON of my plugin's are 64 bit yet, that's why I'm still stuck in 32 bit mode.
Not knowing what size or kind of files you work on makes giving advice a bit tough but try setting the status indicator (don't know the right name for it) in the bottom left corner of any PS open file to "Efficiency" and watch what happens when you process your files. I rarely see mine drop below 90%, I've got the usable RAM in PS Prefs set to it's max suggested, cut way back on History and Cache.
Can't wait for NIK and others to offer their plugin in 64 bit, later this year is what I was told.
There used to be an old "rule of thumb" with old version of PS about Scratch disc size. I don't remember exactly but it may have been 3 to 5 times the size of your biggest file??
Good luck, Alan

  • Configure Macbook Pro with one hard drive to work with FCP

I would like to do some video editing while on the road. I have a new Macbook Pro with Final Cut installed. I know that the capture scratch should not be on the same hard drive as the application. How do I set up the computer to work with FCP when I have only one hard drive. I do have external hard drives to use when editing at home but I would like to edit while traveling in the car or on a plane.

If you don't have an external drive attached, FCP will default to the system drive. The CAPTURE SCRATCH folder will be located in the DOCUMENTS>FCP DOCUMENTS folder. You CAN edit on the system drive, but performance might suffer and you might get dropped frames. DV, OFFLINE RT are fine, HDV and other formats might give you headaches. I have edited DV and OFFLINE RT HD on my laptop's hard drive on a plane without much problem.
Get a bus powered hard drive like the G-Raid Mini. This way you only need one power source.

  • MacBook Pro with 'dead' hard drive

    Hi,
I have here a MacBook Pro, I believe it's 2009, the unibody model with the pop-out battery and HD door. Belongs to my boss.
This morning, on the day when he has some vital legal matters occurring, it refused to boot
He has the drive split with boot camp. It grey screens with the GSoD standard on boot, on option-boot from windows side (after prompting for normal/safe mode, it GSoDs), and on boot from install cd. It fails to do mount anything in Target disk mode.
The drive cannot be verified, repaired, etc via disk utility when I got it to boot there after waiting forever.
I removed the hard drive, put in an enclosure, and connected it to our Mini Server, which informed me that the drive could not be repaired and that I should back up its data ASAP. Which I am doing right now - it all seems to be accessible, but the drive claims to not be writable.
So my question is: is it a safe presumption that the only problem with this machine is the faulty HD? I've just never heard of a hard drive failure in which the data was still readily accessible.
Please advise! It's copying now to disk image, and I may make a second bootable copy to an external HDD in a moment if I can find one.

Upon completion of both copies of the contents, I delved in. Most files seem intact. Having copies, I asked disk utility to format the drive. It did so and reported success. I have now reinstalled the hard drive in the macbook, out of curiosity if nothing else, and have used disk utility to initiate a restore of the bootable copy to the formatted, empty original faulty drive. It appears to be working, albeit an eta of 3 hours or so.
Thus, to clarify, the original drive is now empty, reporting healthy, and being restored.
On the flip side, maybe a restoration of cloned data, if there was NOT a physical drive problem, is a bad idea... this is all getting confusing.
Could his boot camp setup or something have caused... I don't know... a partitioning error? Something that made the hard drive seem to fail when in actuality is was only a logic problem of some kind?
Just curious... I'm going to let this pan out and see what happens. Let me know if anyone has any feedback.

  • Buy MacBook Pro with a hard drive or a SDD?

I am considering buying a MacBook Pro (Lion version) but stuck at which hard drive to include:- A hard drive with faster speed for greater performance or a SDD?
These options below where one can choose from if buying online.
    750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm [+ £40.00]
    128GB Solid State Drive [+ £80.00]
    256GB Solid State Drive [+ £400.00]
    512GB Solid State Drive [+ £880.00]
The no. of GB of each SDD stated doesn't sounds as much as the Serial ATA Drive. That confuses me!
    Any advice on this?

SSD's are much more expensive because 1) they are relatively new to the consumer computer market and 2) they are much, much faster.  I would get a HDD and wait for the prices of SSD's to drop, or still order one with an HDD and install an SSD yourself.  You can order them for much less money and they are very easy to install.  I have done so myself.  Directions both in print (included in the owners manual with the new mac) and video can be found all over the internet.

I currently run Mac Pro with three hard drives. Can I dual boot or even triple boot with Snow Leopard on one drive and Mountain Lion or Lion on others?
I need to keep Snow Leopard so that I can run some old softward.

If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.
CCC can clone Lion Recovery - great for moving or backup.

It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard.

i tried transferring my iphoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook pro (via external hard drive), but when i open the new iphoto, it seems to have transferred ALL images ever used on my old macbook. so i tried to just delete all those images so i could try a different approach to transferring, but the new iphoto won't let me do anything and every time i try to delete anything it crashes (since the image amount is so high).  please help!!
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • How do i copy files from my macbook pro to my hard drive? These files were previously started on my old dell.

how do i copy files from my macbook pro to my hard drive? These files were previously started on my old dell.

More then likely that external drive is formatted the Windows NTFS format which Mac OS X can Read but it can not Write to that format. So you would need to copy all the data off that drive, to either a Windows PC or to your Mac, thenn use the Mac to format it for the Mac OS. Which would be Mac Extended (Journaled) with a Partition Table of GUID.
If you want to use that drive on both Mac and PC then you would need to format it either FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Loading CS5 Master Collection onto new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive

I have a complete, legitimate, registered version of CS5 Master Collection. I also have a new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive. I have lost the disk, but have the box and confirmation email when I registered the product, with the key code. This product cost alot of money and I really need to get it onto my new machine. Can I do this without having the additional cost of a new DVD drive? I already paid for and own the software with keys so it's not like I'm trying to bend anything or do it for free. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Download the CS5 Master Collection trial version from

You must follow the Very Important Instructions on that page first otherwise the links will not work.

i am a dj and my macbook pro 13inch 500g hard drive is almost maxed out. i want to upgrade to a 1tb HDD. what is my best option?

Depending on the year of the MBP, the hard drive may not be considered a user replaceable item...but you can check the available 1 TB drives at good sources such as OWC, http://www.macsales.com they are great to deal with and have on-line videos showing how to do most installation tasks.

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

I doubt the license is affecting the performance - it might be a case of the software being too old for the machine.
In any case, you can contact Adobe support thru chat and have them reset your activation count to eliminatre your doubts regarding the license.
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

Purchase new superdrive, takes 2-3 weeks for shipping at my city.
It can't be done. If your computer has an internal optical drive, working or not, that is the drive you must use. Only computers such as the Macbook Pro Retina/Macbook Air that have no internal optical drive can install Windows from an external drive.
