MacBook Pro with Retina Display or without?

I am an ametuer photographer and I want a Mac to edit my photos. I've heard that the MacBook Pro is better for RMD. I was wondering if, for editing photos, if I should get it with Retina Display or without? Thank you for your help.

Do you currently use a Apple Mac computer or are you switching to Mac for photo editing?
Keep in mind that no notebook has the proper screen size, even a 17" notebook, for good photo editing.
And then you have the only people capable of viewing what you have edited on a Retina screen are those that have Retina screens. Otherwise everyone else will be viewing your edited images on standard screens.
If you are going to switch to Mac for image editing there is nothing that special about a Mac for that. Photoshop runs just as well on Windows as it does on Mac. Mac uses the same graphic processors as Windows along with the same CPU.
Personally I would not by a Retina screen in the current Macbook Pro design. Way to limited for me in the construction of the system. The Retina screen Mac's are basically sealed units that not even Apple can easily take apart and repair without replacing complete system groups. Everything is either soldered or glued in place. Even the barrteries are glued into the case.
So I'd buy the standard model or If I used Windows I'd stick with that.

Windows 8.1 is not yet supported by Boot Camp. The best way currently to install Windows 8.1 is to use a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. Installation instructions are on the Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox site.

How does Autodesk Maya run on the MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

One thing I do know, is the the UI is very small and menu items/buttons are hard to see. Someone posted a video of a now removed autodesk forum response on how to adjust font sizes .cfg file style, but I tried and it did nothing to the small text in Maya 2014. If you plan on it and don't have button and menu locations memorized by feel, I wouldn't use this software on a macbook pro without an external display, or change the resolution out of retina to use Maya.

I have a lot of music, that I would ideally like to transfer to my new laptop, but I have had trouble understanding whether or not it would fit. I don't know if it will. I have about 28 days worth of music. Can I transfer my library without messing my new computer up?

Open iTunes and display your music library. In the iTunes status bar at the bottom of the window you should see what you wish to know. Or you can simply select your /Home/Music/ folder then Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window where the size of the folder willl be displayed in the upper panel.

I can't decide which MacBook with retina display to buy. I'm switching to a Mac from a PC, but I am used to the Mac platform. So far I'm am thinking that, I will choose the 15 inch model, if apple would lower the price a lot at the upcoming event WWDC 2013. But I would consider buy the 13 inch if apple rises the processor speed, offer more ram, and ssd, while keeping the same price.

I am a researcher so I store a lot of papers, data, and use numerical software. I have had a 17inch high spec macbook pro for over a year now. I find that apart from the large screen, it was unnecessary to get the high specs. This is why. Firstly, the hard drive is easy to replace and upgrade, apple charge a lot for their own ones. Secondly, the ram in my one was upgradable (which i didnt know when i bought it) and i since upgraded to 16gigs from 8 and its amazing. Thirdly, the newer macbook pros run hotter than the previous ones.
The retina is overrated and the programs for retina need more memory and processing power, so what you find is that your hard drive will get taken over sooner, your mac will run hotter, and battery life lower.
I would say to you, dont worry about the processor speed, the normal speed offered is perfect, more than that is not necessary unless you are running highly demanding apps, the mac will run hotter too. Dont bother getting a large hard drive in the macbook. Get a flash SSD drive, and buy a good portable 2tb HD, like a WD one, and use that to store as much of your work as possible. I believe apple started soldering their ram cards to the motherboard or something so that people cant upgrade. Check in advance and see if the macbook you want can be ram upgradable, then get a lower ram model and buy good 8gb ram cards to make 16gig. Very very easy to install them, took me about two minutes to do mine, it will be much cheaper.
If I think of anything else i will post back. Dont forget to install GFX card status too and use integrated only when on battery, i get up to ten hours of battery life without wifi, around 8 with wifi.
edit. I forgot to mention that if you buy your mac and try to open it you will void the warranty.

Not sure why you'd want CS5 for your new Mac with Retina display.
Retina support was first added to Photoshop in CS6 version 13.0.3

I have CS4 and just installed it to my new MacBook Pro with Retina display and was upset to see that they don't configure. All of my application are blurry and pixelated. I am currently debating on downgrading to an older MacBook Pro without retina or trying to buy CS6. I can not afford Creative Cloud. I want to make sure that CS6 will work on my retina computer before making that investment. Does anyone have experience using CS6 on a new retina display?

The update for a Mac retina display requires a subscription to InDesign CC. It is not and will not be available for InDesign CS6, which will not be getting significant updates.

1. It will if you run heavy-graphics processing such as HD-movie streaming or gaming. But the system should shut itself down instead of overheating. And if you keep the system on a flat hard surface (rather than on bedsheets), it should be able to keep itself cool enough to not overheat.

4. No. You need an external optical drive.
5. No upgrades, not even RAM or flash storage.
6. Simple internet only requires basic graphics processing. Streaming HD movies from NetFlix requires faster graphics response. Gaming requires faster graphics response. Faster graphics response requires a better graphics chip than the one integrated into the CPU, one with its own RAM.

The quality of built-in camera on macbook pro with retina display is far worse than any other mac. Why?

I just got the new macbook pro with retina display like a week ago and I've been noticing that the quality of the built-in camera on it is so bad.
It's even worse than my 2009 iMac or my sister's 2012 13" macbook pro. I don't get why this is a facetime HD built-in camera when i can obviously see that is not even near HD. Or is it just my computer. Do i have to bring it to the apple store??

it's advertised 720p so yes it is the same as all the other MBP. it may just be the resolution of your monitor is stretching the pixels. Don't worry about bringing it to the apple store.

Is there a way to digitize audio using the headphone input on the 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with Retina display?

I'd like to digitize audio from a minidisc player into my 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with retina display, but can't see a way to change the internal mic input. I understand that previous MacBooks allowed the headphone jack to double as a mic input, but mine doesn't seem capable of switching. I've tried using a mini to mini cable, with no luck, and also tried using a headset splitter adapter (3.5 mm 4-pin to 2x3-pin 3.5 mm headset splitter adapter from Amazon) because I read that that would allow me to plug in headphones and input audio. But in both cases, the only "input" available in my sound preferences is the built-in internal microphone. Am I missing something? Is there a way to digitize audio through the headphone jack?

Not likely. headphone jacks are usually output only devices unless specifically stated to support input, and even then, it may not be audio input that they support, but merely control input for volume and such.
You can get a USB audio input instead. i.e:

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
