MacBook Pro with Retina Display suddenly became unresponsive. Very clueless.
So I was in safari, no biggy. I load up some youtube video and as i put my finger on the track pad, the cursor doesn't move.
I tap the keys and nothing is happening. I use cmd+q to quit safari and nothing happened.
I look up on my iPhone how to force quit an app and i try it; needless to say nothing happens.
The strange thing is, the video is still playing.
I press the power button and suddenly the screen turns off and nothing i do makes anything happen.
I press the power button again, nothing happens.
i plug in the magsafe and the green/orange light doesn't appear.
I google stuff and press shift+control+option+pwr and then I press the power again. the machine turns on like nothing happened.
What gives? is there something wrong with my mac?
should i have it checked out?
Try resetting the SMC. If the problem happens again, take it in for diagnosis.

I've been very happy with this new baby, for about a week now. It never gave me any problem. Then tonight it suddenly died, without any sign. Then I couldn't turn it back on again, no matter what tricks I tried. Is there any solution besides bringing it back to the Apple store tomorrow morning?
Very frustrating for an old Apple fan... I don't want to waste a couple of hours trying to fix a tech problem on a brand new Macbook Pro...Well unless you want to go through the hassle of waiting for a replacement unit you can try a few things on your own.
Make sure it is plugged in and charging (Orange LED light will indicate it is charging Green means it is fully charged)
Once it is plugged in make sure everything else is unplugged
The only thing plugged in should be the power adapter
On the left hand side of your keyboard press down and hold the Control Shift and Option Keys
While you are holding down those three keys hold down the power button as well
Hold down all 4 of these for 10 seconds
After 10 seconds let go
Try turning your mac on
If this works problem fixed!
If this does not work try calling 1-800-MYAPPLE (You get 90 days of free complimentary phone support on your product)
If you purchased AppleCare you have 3 years of it and you should have this number on hand it can really help you out
I always advise friends and family to purchase applecare if they plan on having their product longer than a year
You will get 3 years of phone support as well as hardware support
That means if you have any questions or anything goes wrong just call Apple
It also means if your computer breaks it is covered! Meaning no out of pocket expenses unless it is water or accidental damage

I just got the new macbook pro with retina display like a week ago and I've been noticing that the quality of the built-in camera on it is so bad.
It's even worse than my 2009 iMac or my sister's 2012 13" macbook pro. I don't get why this is a facetime HD built-in camera when i can obviously see that is not even near HD. Or is it just my computer. Do i have to bring it to the apple store??it's advertised 720p so yes it is the same as all the other MBP. it may just be the resolution of your monitor is stretching the pixels. Don't worry about bringing it to the apple store.

I'd like to digitize audio from a minidisc player into my 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with retina display, but can't see a way to change the internal mic input. I understand that previous MacBooks allowed the headphone jack to double as a mic input, but mine doesn't seem capable of switching. I've tried using a mini to mini cable, with no luck, and also tried using a headset splitter adapter (3.5 mm 4-pin to 2x3-pin 3.5 mm headset splitter adapter from Amazon) because I read that that would allow me to plug in headphones and input audio. But in both cases, the only "input" available in my sound preferences is the built-in internal microphone. Am I missing something? Is there a way to digitize audio through the headphone jack?
Not likely. headphone jacks are usually output only devices unless specifically stated to support input, and even then, it may not be audio input that they support, but merely control input for volume and such.

I know many have this issue but i can't find a solution to the problem. i get message saying insuffisiant disk space in the volume iPhoto library and i have plenty of space available. i have the new macbook pro with retina display. i have never seen this message before and i have 2 other macbooks and have had many other also. i am assuming this is a problem with the new macbook retina. does anyone know the exact fix to this issue? i have seen many sugestions to try to fix this issue but none have solved the issue for anyone that i can find in the Apple Support Community. thank for looking into this in advance.
******A true apple fan********Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

Since purchasing a new iPhone 5 and macbook pro with retina display I have decided to keep the iPhone 5 for phone contacts only, and the macbook for email contacts only .. Is there a way for me to keep these as they are recorded on each apple product when I sync with iTunes as it has changed my iPhone and put in email contacts and thus deleted iPhone phone contacts once when I syncd thanks appreciate any help
To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them -

I have bought the full version of Windows 8.1 and would like to partition it on my MacBook Pro. Could someone please help me out by posting step-by-step procedure or a video on how to do it? It is my first time partitioning the Windows operating system and would like to clarify with the community on this before I install it.

Thanks !OK, use Windows 8 in Bootcamp. Be aware that there are no Bootcamp drivers for Windows 8 yet. So you may experiance not only delays but display problems, freezing, crashes and other problems.

On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15", that I purchased a few weeks ago, started coming up with the following message on my desktop:
"USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices".
I unplugged the device and the message still keeps coming up.
This is what I have done so far to troubleshoot:
I shut down the laptop. When booting up I pressed the command+option+p+r at the same time. It comes up with a menu to reinstall OSX, Get help online, Run Disk Utility, etc. I choose the disk utility and repair the disk and then restarted.
The message keeps popping up and I can't seem to get rid of it. Why does the message keep popping up even though I don't have any devices hooked up to the laptop at all? Any help to reenable my usb ports and get rid of the messaage would be helpful.I talked to Apple Support and we at least stopped the bleeding, a little bit. These are the troubleshooting steps I did before I contacted Apple Support:
1. Reinstalled OSX
2. Restore the last known good Time Machine Backup.
This did not fix my issue, so I called Apple Support and they told me this:
1. Turn Power off.
2. Wait 15 seconds.
3. Plug in Magsafe adapter.
4. Wait 15 seconds.
5. Hold down the Shift+Option+Power Button for 20-30 seconds.
6. Turn Power back on.
Ok, this stopped the bleeding a little, but as soon as I plugged in a Apple USB Superdrive
and a Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter. This "USB Devices Disabled" pop-up pops up like every 30 minutes now. At least, it is not constantly popping up after I close it, so I guess it will do for the temporary. Going to contact Apple support, later, though to see what else can be done. -
Windows XP on macbook pro with retina display?
I am going to be helping a client with putting Windows XP on a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display later this week.
This client has two programs that are XP-specific, and MUST be run by booting XP fully and not virtually with Parallels or other options.
So we are going to be using bootcamp.
We have the XP install disc, and an external USB CD/DVD drive from Apple.
I've found postings online about people installing more recent flavors of Windows (Vista, 7, etc) on these machines
but I haven't found anything about Windows XP on the MBPro with retina display.
Anyone have any tips to share?
This should still be possible and not a big problem, right?

Thank you for any helpful info anyone can provide.First off there are no programs that are XP specific and no programs, that I know of or ever heard of, that can not run in XP in a virtual machine.
Most all programs that will run on XP will run on Win 7, unless they are older programs. Those older program that will run on XP and not on Vista or 7 will also run on Win 2000 or 98SE. So as stated before I don't know of any programs that will only run on XP and no other operating system.
A Virtual Machine is Just That, IE a set of Virtual hardware. The Operating system has No Idea it is running in a Virtual Machine on top of a Host operating system. They are completely separate except for the VM using some of the physical hadware in the host computer. Like the USB ports, the network interfaces and the CD/DVD drive. And the VM software is made to allow those devices to look like they are part of a Physical computer the VM OS is running on.
So I have not idea what these programs could be that would not run on/in a Virtual Machine with XP Installed.
Please let me know for future reference.
So your options are.
1) Install a Virtual Machine software program. VMware Fusion, Parallels or Virtualbox. Then install Win XP into a Virtual Machine.
2) Buy and older Windows computer that will run XP natively. It doesn't need to be that old, 3-4 years old will do as most all major PC manufacturers have XP drivers for their 3-4 year old computers and most if not all hardware manufacturers, Vid cards, Ethernet & WiFi cards, still list drivers for XP.
