MacBook Pro with SIM-Card.

MacBook Pro: How can I connect to my internet provider without WLAN? I have a SIM-Card.

Just after having the communication in January in this forum I solved the problem quite easily with an adapter with the name D-Link (3G HSUPA USB ADAPTER DWM-156). I place the SIM card in this adapter and stick the adapter in the USB-socket and the installed SW (delivered in package) starts. The SW lets me manage the connection and offers some usefull statistical data.
It really doesn't make sense that the Macbook doesn't have a drawer like iPhone or iPad to use the SIM card.

4s microphone has malfunctioned on most outgoing calls for many months. People can't hear me for first 10 seconds of outgoing phone calls. I've synched w healthy Macbook Pro, replaced SIM cards, replaced iPhone 4s when Apple Store thought it was probably a hardware problem, called Applecare (no mic issue admitted). OS problem??? I think so! [Possible] good news: for the past 2 days, since updating to 5.1.1, no one has reported problems hearing me!
I'm concerned Applecare folks did not admit to me that so many other 4s users also has malfunctioning mics.

    Why would that even matter?
The device obviously has a hardware issue and is under warranty, take it to Apple for replacement and move on with life.  No reason to make things difficult.

  • If I buy an external hard drive for my new MacBook Pro with the retina display, can I play The Sims 3 on it?

    Hi!
I recently bought the new MacBook Pro with the new retina display, but since it does not have a dvd/cd drive, I was going to buy an external one. I think I will be able to use it to watch dvds, but can I also play the computergame The Sims 3 on it? If not is there anything else I can do?
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can try formatting the external drive on your eMac using Disk Utility and choosing a well-known format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html. It's quite possible that your new iMac would be able to read it, but first, tell us which formats Disk Utility lists.
If you have those songs in iTunes, simply go to Music folder and copy the iTunes folder to the external drive. Then, connect it to the iMac and copy the iTunes folder to Music folder.
If they are not in iTunes, copy your songs to the external drive. Then, connect it to your new iMac, open iTunes and drag the songs into it

How to get photos from iPhoto back onto a SD card. I have a MacBook Pro with built in SD card slot. I have tried "Export" but this does not work.

It's best to export the photos to a folder and then drag the folder onto the memory card.  Memory cards are usually formatted for PCs, FAT 32, which doesn't permit more than a limited number of files in the root directory. Putting the photos in a folder gets around that limitation.

  • CAC Card Problems on MacBook Pro with OS Lion 10.7.3

I bought a CAC Card Reader for my MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.3 and it doesn't work. The USB is recognizing that it is in there, but when i try and access the AKO website it doesn't work. I know I read on Mac Os Forge about Apple not sending the new OS Lion 10.7 with the smart card reader abilities. But there was also an update on the website for smart card services dated 19 Aug 2011, for OS 10.7. I downloaded it, installed it, and still have had no luck accessing my AKO website. Anyone else have this issue and/or has anyone been able to or have any ideas to figure out how to make it work? Thanks!

Try militarycac.com.  The Chief does a good job of discussing the issues that you are trying to address and shows both free and commercial solutions that resolve the issues.

  • Macbook Pro with 128Mb video card and gaming

Everyone is saying that the Macbook is no good for gaming. Ok, I can see that. But how does the base model Macbook Pro do with games ? I'm in the market for a new notebook and it's either going to be a black macbook with 2Gb or a macbook pro 2.16Ghz with 128Mb video and 2Gb RAM. I can't afford a more expensive macbook pro with 256Mb of video ram since I'll already be stretching my budget with the 2.16 pro. I'm not a hardcore gamer (used to be, though) but I definitely enjoy gaming from time to time. I don't want to be able to play the lastest games at super high resolutions but I would expect a 2006/2007 computer to be able to run a two year old game like c&c generals without a hitch (which the macbook doesn't, even with the universal binary patch). Anyone have the baseline macbook pro ? How does it do with games (OS X, I'm not planning on forking out for a copy of Windows XP).

I'll second blamb327. I am playing World of Warcraft on my MBP C2D, 128MB video ram, 1.5GB ram. It runs extremely well, in full screen or windowed mode. I prefer to use windowed mode so I can see IMs coming in or email notifications. But it runs really well. It certainly heats up though, usually the high 140s, sometimes into 150. The fans run constantly at about 4000-6000rpm. It still runs cooler than it does when ripping cds or making iMovies. I may put a small desk fan on it for really long sessions, just to keep things running nice and cool.

  • Help - VMWare Fusion, Macbook Pro, Vista, Graphics Cards & Games

Help, please ... We just purchased a new MacBook Pro with an NVida 8600M graphics card. The operating system is up-to-date.
I installed the latest version ov VMWare Fusion. Then installed Windows Vista Basic, and it is up-to-date with Service Patch 1. All the basic Vista services appear to work as it would on a PC.
Next, I installed the game Sims 2. When I try to run the game, I get an error message that says:
"... did not detect a hardware capable of running DirectX 9.0 ..."
I checked NVida and the 8600M is capable of running DirectX 10.0.
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this game to work????
    Thanks

VMware is software emulation and at this point cannot use your graphics card. You need to install Vista using bootcamp and run it through there to have access to the graphics card. remember to install the boot camp files and all drivers after you install Vista

  • Macbook Pro with Retina wont detect monitor on mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter

So after reading Jeff Atwood's post, I decided to jump and give it a shot. So this week I got my monitor in from Korea, and I already had my Apple mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter, hooked everything up - and nothing. Monitor doesnt show a signal, and no display shows up in user preferences.
To verify the monitor actually works, i plugged it into my windows box - and boom, right away there it is in all its glory. So I called apple support, after spending about an hour going through the "are you sure its plugged in stuff", the tech finally admitted to being stumped and blamed the adapter. Not to be deterred, I then went to my local apple store and talked them into trying their adapter to rule out the adapter - regardless of the adapter, the mbp wont detect the monitor.
Just for fun, i tried my old single mini displayport to single dvi, the monitor is recognized, but that obviously cant drive the right resolution, so i just get a backlight. Same deal when i try the hdmi port with a hdmi to dual-link dvi adapter on the end of it. Also tried display port to the same hdmi with adapter on it (the joys of working in a dev shop - cables to test everywhere)
I have read / tried a ton of things:
re-installed / uninstalled air display, just to be sure it was gone. went through all my apps just to see if there is anything like this i could think would be effecting it
install gfxCardStatus to ensure i am on the nvidia (discrete) and not the internal card
Played with different settings on SwitchResX to try to force the res over hdmi - no love - os rejected each one
I bought the monoprice adapter wondering if it was just the apple adapter since the apple adapter has been panned, no love from it either
    Reset the PRAM countless times
I have two other adapters coming in to test with in a day or two - maybe one of those will be magic, but at this point i kinda think its software on the mac. My Spec:
I am running Mountain Lion with all the latest updates
New MBP with Retina (2.6g processor, 16gig ram, nvidia video card)
Here is the ebay link to the monitor
Now the other weird thing is pretty much universally these auctions say the monitors cant be run on a laptop - which makes no sense to me, because its just a connection, if the video card is strong enough (which my machine better be) it shouldnt matter the source. The listing mentions its a "by-pass" monitor, which is something I and google have never heard of.
So any sage words to make my day?

Magic was, I have to have the adpter plugged into the mac, let it recognize all with the monitor powered off.
then power on the monitor, and boom gloriousness
For future generations, setup that works:
    1) MacBook Pro with Retina
    2) Monitor From Korea (example auction)
    3) Accell Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Active adapter (amazon)
    4) Boot mac, plug in adapter, let it recognize the monitor, power on monitor

  • HT4736 Taking too long (2 minutes) to locate and download photos into Photo '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I checked and repaired HD permissions. Any ideas?

Regarding iPhoto '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I am dealing with iPhoto taking too long to download photos.  Specifically, I rechecked and repaired HD permissions. I am running the most current software my five year old Intel MacBook Pro can run.   What happens is that when I connect an external SD card, or my iPhone, the new version of iPhoto takes up to two full minutes to fully acknowledge the device. Then locate new photos and be ready to download them to my external HD.  I am kind of concerned about this.  This has never happened before.
I take 20,000 photos a year.  I really don't want to lose any.  Or is there something I am doing wrong?  Or need to be aware of?  Any experienced suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Have a great day.
PS.... The cameras I use are Canon SX-30, Nikon D3100, and my iPhone 4S.  Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello Old Toad.... Those sound like great ideas.
I thought I checked and repaired disk permissions on my main boot HD.  That boot disk is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  Capacity 749.3 GB.  Available 562.53 GB.   BUT.... now that I think of it.... the Seagate external HD with USB2 interface is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Capacity 639.79 GB, Available 36.2 GB with my latest iPhoto Library 517.37 GB that was already scanned & updated to be read by the latest iPhoto version.
I'll try your suggestions tonight as far as double checking 'permissions' and setting up a tiny test library.
Or maybe it's time to fill up another External HD?
I appreciate your and anyone else's suggestions to try.
Have a great day. ~~ David in Rochester NY

  • Windows XP on macbook pro with retina display?

I am going to be helping a client with putting Windows XP on a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display later this week.
This client has two programs that are XP-specific, and MUST be run by booting XP fully and not virtually with Parallels or other options.
So we are going to be using bootcamp.
We have the XP install disc, and an external USB CD/DVD drive from Apple.
I've found postings online about people installing more recent flavors of Windows (Vista, 7, etc) on these machines
but I haven't found anything about Windows XP on the MBPro with retina display.
Anyone have any tips to share?
This should still be possible and not a big problem, right?
Yes, I know the resolution will likely be the biggest issue, but it should still install and run, yes?
Thank you for any helpful info anyone can provide.

First off there are no programs that are XP specific and no programs, that I know of or ever heard of, that can not run in XP in a virtual machine.
Most all programs that will run on XP will run on Win 7, unless they are older programs. Those older program that will run on XP and not on Vista or 7 will also run on Win 2000 or 98SE. So as stated before I don't know of any programs that will only run on XP and no other operating system.
A Virtual Machine is Just That, IE a set of Virtual hardware. The Operating system has No Idea it is running in a Virtual Machine on top of a Host operating system. They are completely separate except for the VM using some of the physical hadware in the host computer. Like the USB ports, the network interfaces and the CD/DVD drive. And the VM software is made to allow those devices to look like they are part of a Physical computer the VM OS is running on.
So I have not idea what these programs could be that would not run on/in a Virtual Machine with XP Installed.
Please let me know for future reference.
    So your options are.
    1) Install a Virtual Machine software program. VMware Fusion, Parallels or Virtualbox. Then install Win XP into a Virtual Machine.
    2) Buy and older Windows computer that will run XP natively. It doesn't need to be that old, 3-4 years old will do as most all major PC manufacturers have XP drivers for their 3-4 year old computers and most if not all hardware manufacturers, Vid cards, Ethernet & WiFi cards, still list drivers for XP.

  • Macbook Pro with retina 13-inch - should I have gone for the 15?

Hi I recently bought a 13-inch Macbook pro with retina display. I am delighted with it. My main usage is
1.Word processing - this is what I basically use it for (translating, text editing, heavy email)
    2. Examining photos to see if they are suitable for publication - don't need any special software
    3. Browsing the web (a lot!)
    4. Plan to learn In Design (software) so I can help out my colleagues. (Nothing too intensive, maybe 3-4 pages a month).
    5. Watching movies and listening to music while on the go (or even at home)
    6. Using Parallel for Windows 7 (3-4 applications only)
I heard that the 15-inch one is more powerful. Did I make a good choice or should I have bought the 15-inch one. It seemed a bit heavy for me at the time I saw it but  no-one told me it was so much more powerful. I have the basic late 2012 model with 128GB SSD but also have a light 1TB hard drive and superdrive.
Please reassure me that I have not made the wrong decision but if you think I have, then tell me. I am a first-time Mac user, and coming from a Vaio X (which recently died) the power of this thing seems awesome!!

That MacBook Pro is perfect for you, and I don't think that you need a 15-inch MacBook Pro, even if it's more powerful than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. There are some important differences between the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and the 15-inch MacBook Pro, like the graphic card or the processor, but if that MacBook works properly, continue using it
