Macbook Pro with XP + Sound drivers, Headphone speaker deactivation?
I recently discovered that the SigmaTel audio drivers which comes with the BootCamp Beta don't deactivate the built in speakers when headphones are plugged in. Using the apple supplied drivers, sound works fine in XP games. But it obviously isn't a good solution since playing music or games will annoy everyone around me even when I have the headphones plugged in.
On another forum I found a post from people who have had success installing the SigmaTel drivers for 945G chipset motherboards available from Intel's website. These drivers completely deactivate the built in speakers, but work fine with headphones. They work fine in XP at the desktop for playing MP3, DVDs, etc. Unfortunately they're broken in games that use the DirectX 9 DirectSound libraries, with wildly garbled sound output (Serious Sam 2, etc).
Has anyone found a solution that both works in games and deactivates the onboard speakers when headphones are plugged in?
I have the same problem as well. I tried the instructions too from that other link. all it did was disable my speakers and only the headphones would work.
Hopefully someone has another idea, maybe another type of driver??

I was just curious if a short in the Beats by Dre cord will cause a problem with the overall sound of a macbook pro? I ask because during FaceTime calls when I disconnect the cord my macbook makes loud scratching noise until I adjust the volume with the volume buttons? Anyone know what this may be?

My MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.2, only audio on the headset, and speaker mute. With Windows, the audio works in speaker and headphone jack. What is the problem? What's the solution?
There is probably a red light on inside your headphone port, indicating that the analog/digital switch in there is stuck in the digital position. Insert a headphone plug and wigle it around, especially in the horizontal plane, as you insert and remove it several times. This will usually unstick the switch and restore normal operation. If it doesn't, the machine will need to be repaired.
This has been a fairly common problem, but in most cases it is easily cured as described above. -
Right speaker on Macbook Pro (with Retina) not working..
Bought Macbook Pro with retina display yesterday and just noticed sounds is only coming from the left speaker. I've checked on system preferences and when I turn the left hand speaker down there is no sound. Is this a manufacturing error or something I need to do?!

Not a lot to go by from the lack of detail in your post, however let me try to help.
[note I may not follo up on your response - just a heads up as i'm very busy [ arent we all]]
Anyway, I bought a HP Pavilliion 500 the other day. and was stoked - awesome machine at a great price locally.
So after plugging in my Altec Lansing 6.1 surround sound speakers using the brown/black/green colour coded input plugs on the back of the PC's audio card (built in) - to correspond with the cables on thealtec lansing, I noticed that 2 speakers were working at the same time, and another speaker did work at all.
I spent about an hour or 2 pulling hair until I finally turned everything off, then plugged it in, then turned n the speakers and then the PC - voila - the speakers were working, one thing I had to do though was move them around as the front right speaker was now the middle etc, no biggy - just moved the speakers around...
PS: there was a siding button on the back n my speakers that allow full 6.1 or stereo - which I hd to change to get it to work.
Also on the altec lansing model I have I had to adjust the surround knob on the main speaker control to #10 for surround for the speakers to work individually.

Check what inputs you are using. Check the inbuilt sound control software, in my case it was DTS Audio Settings, which allowed me to tweak things a bit.
Sometimes yes it is hardward,but when you know your have "known good speakers"as I did, and a brand new PC - which in theory should handle the speakers I am using, then it can be a combination of trial and error to get them working...
I gues you have the latest drivers, and if you dont have any great input options (ie: if you only have headphones socket) and are using stereo - ty some headphones? - as sometimes it can be the cable socket itself which is just built slightly different so the speakers dont all come thourgh like they should...

Would a busted speaker in a macbook retina display affect sound through headphones?
I was recently told that my macbook pro retina display had a busted speaker, this conclusion came about because whenever I played audio, and annoying buzzing would come from the speakers. Since i have not had the time lately to take it into apple and have them fix it, I have had to use headphones. To get to the point, I was wondering if busted speakers could affect the sound quality of in-ear earphones?
If your not getting the same Buzzing then there probably isn't anything wrong with the audio chip. Muffled sound in a Movie? Join the club. Every time I watch a movie I have to raise and lower the volume. Not sure why, in my opinion, modern movies have terrible sound. Music way to loud, voices way to low and forget about when they are talking quietly. I though it was me but all my friends say the same thing.
Never have to do this with movies made in the 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 or 90's. It is only with newer movies. -
I'd like to digitize audio from a minidisc player into my 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with retina display, but can't see a way to change the internal mic input. I understand that previous MacBooks allowed the headphone jack to double as a mic input, but mine doesn't seem capable of switching. I've tried using a mini to mini cable, with no luck, and also tried using a headset splitter adapter (3.5 mm 4-pin to 2x3-pin 3.5 mm headset splitter adapter from Amazon) because I read that that would allow me to plug in headphones and input audio. But in both cases, the only "input" available in my sound preferences is the built-in internal microphone. Am I missing something? Is there a way to digitize audio through the headphone jack?
Not likely. headphone jacks are usually output only devices unless specifically stated to support input, and even then, it may not be audio input that they support, but merely control input for volume and such.

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either. I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!
There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
10. Reset the NVRAM.
11. Reset the SMC.
12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.

Did you download and install the Windows Support software? If you did, did you use the Boot Camp Control icon to set up the trackpad how you want it?

Retina macbook pro with thunderbolt display causes speaker issues
I have a thunderbolt display and used the speakers fine on old macbook pro. I now plug in my new retina macbook pro 15" with mountain lion and the sound plays fine for a while then starts to crackle real bad and then stops all together. If I switch the the laptop speakers then switch back after 30 or so minutes the thunderbolt speakers will work again for a short amount of time then again crackle and stop.
This may be mountain lion related but I have tried another non-retina version macbook pro with mountain lion and did not notice the issue but it was only for an hour or so. So this leads me to belive its the computer.
Any suggestions? its really really anoying and wasting my time trying to fix it.I have the exact same issue. I hauled the TB Display into the Apple Store 3 times and finally they replaced it. Come to find out this new one has the same issue still. So It has to be rMBP related at this point. Unfortunately I don't think I have it under warranty still and the issue is hard to demonstrate. I recorded videos of it but every time I go into the store and plug it is the same as switching the speakers from internal to external and it takes 30-60 mins before it degrates to scratching sounds.
Please let me know if you ever foudn a solution. Im going to try to keep taking it in until I can get this resolved. -

We have a tower, and I don't see an on/off button. Should I just unhook the power cord from the tower? We also have the phone line hooked to the tower, should I unhook as well? I'm assuming the PC is off before I do this?

Brand new i5 Macbook Pro making "clunking" sounds with any sort of movement
I bought a brand new 15" Macbook Pro with a core i5 processor a few months ago. While it is the first Mac I have owned after a lifetime of owning and building PC's, I love it to death.
Anyways, anytime there is any sort of movement, say, if I'm moving from my desk to the couch and I pick the laptop up, it makes a clunking noise which to me sounds exactly like a failing hard drive. The difference is that it only clunks once or twice during the movement, and then stops once I stop moving the laptop. This happens even if I move the laptop very carefully.
My girlfriend has had her 13" macbook for years, and it does not do this.
It doesn't seem to affect my performance (yet), but i'm wondering, is this normal? Is this maybe the warning sign of a hard drive that could be failing prematurely?it is the sudden motion sensor and what you hear is correct it comes from your drive . when the accelorometer detects certain G's it shuts the drive which makes the drive head park suddenly and the " clunk " you hear is the drive head parking . while it's perfectly ok ( you can not hurt your drive by parking it ) it might get boring after a while if you move it around too much .. you can go ahead and disable your sudden motion sensor at the cost of risking damage when your machine absorbs some proper shock . your choice .. if you google disable sms in google you will get the code to do it if you ever wish to do so

Why can my LG Portable Super Multi Drive (GP08NU6B) burn discs, but not read them? Right after I burn a DVD successfully, I stick it back in the drive and it says "The disk you have inserted is not readable by this computer" I have a 2006 15" Macbook Pro with a broken Superdrive, and this external disk drive is the only optical drive that worked via USB. This external drive was bought in 2010 and worked fine up until a month ago. This is supposed to be a Plug and Play device, and LG assures me the drivers are already included in Mac OSX, yet it seems somehow my Macbook lost the drivers and it won't let me watch DVDs now or recognize any discs at all!
How can I find and somehow reinstall the firmware for this optical drive?Sounds more like a hardware issue to me.
