Macbook Pro won't recognise Lacie external HD

The beginning of this week i sold my old 2008 iMac (running Lion) as i wanted to upgrade to a new Macbook Pro. I was using my old iMac with an additional Lacie Rugged 1TB external HDD which was set-up via time-machine and i backed up everything through that and never had a problem with it.
Just before i sold the iMac i backed everything up for the last time with the view that i could simply plug my HDD into the new Macbook and retrieve my system, apps & files..Unfortunately after several attempts i can't even get the MBP to recognise the HD even exists! I know there's no problem with the HDD and i always eject it properly before switching it off. I've tried different USB ports, different leads, Disk Utility etc etc.. but still cannot seem to get the MBP to recognise the HDD! It's all very frustrating.
I've searched through the forum to no avail, so does anyone have any ideas for what i can do from here?!

  • Macbook Pro won't boot with external HDD plugged

I have a weird problem. My late 2008 Macbook Pro won't start with external HDD plugged either FW or USB... The screen stays white until I unplug it and then the Apple logo is there.
Anyone know any solution for this? Or anyone have the same problem

yeah I had the exact same issue with one of my 750GB externals too. I just left it for a while (about an hour or so) and it was fine..
I believe its so slow because the system is indexing the drive, which can be a very slow process if the drive is big, has a complex folder-hierarchy, and/or is fragmented.
Does the hard-drive appear quite quickly in Finder once OS X has started up? if its slow it may confirm what I've just said.

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize 1TB external drive

    Hey team,
My mid-2010 MacBook Pro won't recognize my WD My Passport 1TB drive.  I was copying files from the drive to my computer when my computer went to sleep (didn't run out of power, just went to standby mode).  Turned computer back on and now it won't recognize the drive.
It is a USB 3.0 cord (computer is only USB 2.0 and the cord works with other drives) and when plugged in, the light turns on and the disk spins but isn't recognized my this or other computers (also not in Disk Utility).
Tried a handful of disk recovery programs but nothing wants to 'see' the disk plugged in.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

yes yes yes,   I warn people about WD drives on this link:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

    What now?
Only option is to buy the SAME exact HD and swap controller boards,  or pay someone a LOT more $$$ to do the same thing.
its not soldered there, its just a controller/ SATA  "one piece"
They do that to save 50 cents in mfg. costs.
I mention your "issue" in that link.    Which is why you do NOT buy WD ext. HD.
they make the controller board and SATA card one piece.
CURRENT MFG. THAT HAVE controller board and SATA cards as one piece are :  WD USB drives, and Toshiba USB Canvio
However Toshiba didnt USED to do that, but they started doing it at the end of 2013.
    avoid those 2.
To avoid that nonsense, buy Hitachi drives in USB.
    Or, the best option:
Save money and invest in a bare hard drive backup and redundancy plan
    Its cheaper
    less fuss
more reiable, removes the nasty failure point of SATA card interfaces.
    takes up lot less space.
Bare hard drives and docks. The most reliable and cheapest method of hard drive data storage, archives, and redundancies
The best method for your data archives and redundancies, which is also the least expensive, the most reliable, and the most compact option is the purchase of naked hard drives and at least one USB 3.0 HD dock ($40 roughly).
While regarding Time Machine and your Macbook or desktop, your primary backup is best saved to a conventional USB (or Firewire / thunderbolt) hard drive inside an enclosure, the most important part of your data protection begins after your 1st / primary Time Machine / backup; and these are your secondary (most important) data storage devices, archives and their redundancies.
However bare hard drives and docks (below) also work perfectly as a Time Machine backup, this is for home use, since the docking station is certainly not very portable as a notebook Time Machine backup device should be; nor should bare HD be packed around with a notebook, rather remain at home or office.
Six terabytes of 2.5" HD pictured below in a very compact space.
Bare hard drives and docks have the lowest cost, the highest reliability, and take up the smallest storage space
    Drawbacks:
    1. Care and knowledge in general handling of naked hard drives (how not to shock a bare HD, and how to hold them properly). Not a genuine drawback.
    Advantages:
    1. By far the least expensive method of mass HD storage on a personal basis. Highest quality naked HD can be purchased in bulk very cheap.
    2. Eliminates the horrible failure point of SATA bridges and interfaces between external drives and the computer.
    3. Per square foot you can store more terabytes of data this way than any other.
    4. Fast, easy, no fuss and most simplex method of data storage on hard drives.

  • My macbook pro won't recognise HP C4480 scanner. Help please.

My new macbook pro won't accept my scanner. I have a C4480 photosmart printer and it will print from my macbook but when i try to scan, it says unknown error. I have installed from HP CD and from HP website but makes no difference. Help please. Thank you.

I also have this problem. My MacBook alays has trouble recognizing HP printers and scanners and I allways have to restart programs and reboot the laptop in order to scan with HP scanners.
However with the C4480 it just does not work it doesn't seem to matter how many times I reboot.

  • Macbook Pro will not recognise WD external hardrive

    Hello,
My hard drive, which has all my time machine back ups on it, just stopped working. It was working fine last week when I last backed up, however when I plugged it in to my macbook pro today my computer would not recognise it. I am quite worried as my hard drive has all my files and photos on it.
I believe the model of my hard drive is a WD 1TB external hard drive, and it is a few years old. I have never had any problems to date.
When I tried to use disk utility though, it picked up the hard drive in there but said it needed to be repaired but would not repair it.
Can anyone tell me how I can fix this or what my next steps should be?

First see if another computer recognizes it. If not, it's possible the drive is still good and the circuit board in the drive housing has failed. That's relatively common. If that's what it is you need to get the actual drive out of the WD housing and into another external enclosure. Something like this:

  • MacBook Pro won't recognise my iPod as a removable HD?

    Hey guys,
    I have the 2nd Gen 40GB iPod with a 2.4GHz MacBook Pro 17".
The iPod works perfectly fine with iTunes, but it's not showing on my desktop as a removable HD like it used to with my old 1.33GHz PowerBook.
Has anyone got any idea of what the problem could be?
I know before there was some kind of settings you could change in iTunes to make it availale on the desktop, but I can't see anything this time round.
All help in the matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chris

After you iPod shows up in the devices section select it. In the main itunes window you should be on the summary tab. In the options section there should be a check box next to the "Enable disk use" option. make sure this is checked. Hit the Apply button. Eject the ipod and then connect it to see if you can now use it as an external hdd. I would also suggest un-checking the "open itunes when this ipod is connected" option, that way if you quickly want to drag a .doc file or something to your ipod you will not have to deal with itunes opening.
If Enable Disk Use is already checked deselect it, recheck it and make sure to hit the apply button if it is there (it won't be if there are no changes to made to your ipod configuration.)

  • Macbook Pro won't work with external display?

The very first time I connected my brand new Macbook Pro to my 23" Cinema Display the laptop screen displayed mostly static, though the external monitor continued to work. The computer was sent to Apple for repair. Apple replaced the logic board. Though the nature of the problem changed following the "repair" (the Macbook's screen now goes dark instead of displaying noise) the laptop still will not drive the external monitor successfully without multiple re-starts. I've experimented with turning the sleep mode on and off as well as the screen saver. No effect. Is anyone using this set up successfully or is there some fatal design flaw in the Macbook Pro? System 1.4.8, 2 gigs RAM. Thanks.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've driven the 23" with another Mac. I took the laptop back to the shop today. Hopefully they can resolve the issue.

  • My Macbook Pro won't recognise and/or detect my Epson WF-5320 Printer anymore.

I have a new Epson WF-3520 series printer that when first purchased and set up according to the guide connected perfectly with my Macbook Pro. Eventually, when I went to print a document, my Mac would tell me the printer was not connected. I had restored the printers default settings and had set up the printer as first purchased, which lead to it to work again. However, over time it decided not to connect again. Now when I attempt to install the printer's connection with my Macbook, it tells me connection failed. Whenever I go to Syste Preferences > Print & Scan > then click the "+" button to add my printer (as I have read this suggestion on other forums for this particular problem) my Macbook will not recognise any nearby printers at all. Are there any detailed step by step suggestions on how to fix this problem? It is very inconvenient as I need documents printed for university and I can't keep affording to print at public printing stations. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, Thank you!
Also, I do not have a USB connection that could connect the printer and laptop together.. would this be an issue? As the printer is wireless.

I also have this problem. My MacBook alays has trouble recognizing HP printers and scanners and I allways have to restart programs and reboot the laptop in order to scan with HP scanners.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot if external device is plugged in...

    Namely, my iPod.
If I turn my macbook pro on and the iPod is plugged in, the system won't boot - it locks up on the grey screen before the apple logo even appears. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hey there,
When I restart my Macbook Pro I have to unplug my USB hub on the right hand side or my computer will just hang at the white screen when it first turns on. Once I unplug the hub the computer boots, and once it gets to the log on screen I can plug in the hub and everything works fine. Has anyone found a fix for this yet?? It's pretty annoying because it also happened randomly and hasn't worked properly since. I have replaced my USB hub just to make sure it wasn't the issue and my computer still won't boot with it plugged in.

  • Unibody MacBook Pro won't recognize WD External Drive

I just upgraded from the old MacBook Pro to the earlier model unibody MacBook Pro. I had a WD external drive with firewire 400, and bought an expresscard adapter with firewire 400 so that I could connect to my new computer. the computer recognizes the adapter, but the drive will not power on or appear on the computer. It works fine with the old computer, though. Some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • My Macbook suddenly won't recognise my external hard drive

    Hi there.
I am using an Intenso 2,5" MemoryStation as an external hard drive. I have a few folders with pictures on it and my TimeMachine. When I plug it in it would usually show up on my desktop and start backing up my hard disk automatically. Something has now changed.
My dad gave my Macbook a new hard disk with more storage. When he put it in, he first safety copied all my stuff onto a separate external hard drive - ie. not my own. My Macbook is working perfectly and looks and acts exactly like before. But when I plug in my external hard drive, it now doesn't show up, neither on my desktop nor in disk utility. I can see that the external hard drive is responding as a light switches on and off when I plug it in and out; I don't think it is broken as I have taken very good care of it.
I'm worried that I have formatted my external hard drive so that it will only respond to a (now old) backup of my Macbook, which I can't access from my new hard disk.
I do also have the external hard drive that my dad originally used to backup all my stuff - with the older backup. Is there a way I can have my external hard drive read the new external hard drive (with the old backup of my Macbook)? Or has anyone experienced anything like this before?
Sorry if it got a bit complicated. It is evident that I am no tech expert.
    Best,
    Anne Sofie
