Your MacBook is stuck, so hold the Power button until the MacBook turns off. Then, turn it on again and install 10.7.5 with the Combo version > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

WHAT??? Now that's a disappointment! I was sure the all-seeing, all-knowing Prof. Kappy would instantly discover the problem thru time and space....
Ok, back to the issue at hand, the Prof. is right. In none of the OP's participation, nor in any of his choir of followers save mommy power is there the least hint of what Apple product is failing. While y'all get a move on and disgorge the details, may want to try a Safe Boot. Hold down the Shift key prior to the startup chime and wait awhile. IF it starts, then it means you have some third-party software that's causing the problem. Else there's a strong probability a complete reinstall will occur in your near future.
In the future and in spite of what some purists may say, be sure to service the system disk BEFORE patching. By "service" I mean booting up the Mac using your Install DVD (Snow Leopard or priors) or booting in Recovery Mode (Command R, in the Lions and successors), running the Disk Utility found in that mode and doing a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions. Until NO errors show up. Cause patching up an already damaged system will only make things worse.

  • CD will not eject and MacBook Pro won't restart

CD will not eject and MacBook Pro won't restart.

Do a SMC reset, that hopefully should get you booting and while booting, hold the option/alt and trackpad button down at the same time. Once a row of icons appears and if the disk hasn't ejected via the trackpad method, then press the eject key on the keyboard until it does.
Click the arrow to boot up OS X.

If this doesn't work, then take the machine in for service.

  • MacBook Pro (2006 OS X 10.6.3) won't restart to finish software update (10.6.8)

MacBook Pro (2006) won't restart to finish the update. It only turns off.
I can turn the machine back on, but the update has not been installed.

There may be a redirect issue if an adware software has been
installed by accident or by intent; usually if someone goes to a
web site where questionable downloads of software are free,
there may be (included, added to) the packet you get, adware
    or perhaps even malware.
So, if this is the case, the symptoms you say are part of this
experience may be related to an adware or other badware
running in the background. A 'cleanmymac' or 'mackeeper'
can also mess up a Mac computer, & they are not advised.
Several posts to the ASC discussions are about these kinds
of things and many point back to a user going to some web
site and downloading something. A click can do it.
A way to help find some evidence of certain kinds of add-ons
(outside of looking into the Browser's add-ons and see about
deleting those that relate to odd behavior, or badware) such
as adware, one could get and use this free utility & get a
report of general system info, and then post it online to see
if someone can spot some of the characteristics adware or
other malware may have included in the system.
There is another way to get a more lengthy report than etrecheck
as Linc Davis has posted, that uses more detailed effort on the
part of the user, in order to get a larger fuller report.
This is the short and easy way to look for a few clues that may
be addressed through using advice in TheSafeMac guide.
    •EtreCheck: (also click on read-more)

The report from the above may be helpful along with info in the
site below. Note there are other guides in TheSafeMac, too.

Hopefully the issue with the browser can be resolved in one
of up to three/four different ways, depending on what it is.
PS: recent updates to some OS X versions, etc do not
include update to Snow Leopard; only later systems.

  • Macbook Pro won't restart while updating 10.6.0 - 10.6.8

    Hello all,
I'm having trouble updating my Macbook Pro 13 inch from 2009.
Yesterday I turned my Macbook Pro on for the first time in 2 years and I want to bring some life in it.
It still had the version 10.5.8 which I updated with a usb to 10.6.
Now I want to update my OS X version from 10.6.0 to 10.6.8. I've downloaded the files by clicking on ''software update'' through ''about my mac''.
It now asks for a reboot, so it will install the updates. However, the macbook won't restart.
I click on restart and all it does is show very short a blue screen and then I see my background with only my mouse cursor which I can still move around. All of the applications and toolbars are gone and I can wait an hour and it will still be in the same position. So I have to force the shutdown by holding the power button... And when I turn it back on, it didn't install anything.
Can someone please help me out?
    Kind regards!

Manually DL and install the 10.6.8 COMBO update.

  • Macbook pro won't restart after time machine install on new hard drive

I installed a new 500 GB HD on my 13-inch mid 2010 Macbook Pro (since the original crashed).  I successfully connected to the Disk Utility via the internet connection and started recovery from a recent Time Machine backup....but, the computer will not restart.  It's been stuck in the grey screen with the Apple logo and rotating status bar all night.  I shut it down and restarted, but it won't go past the grey screen state.  I can't find any answers on the Support Page.  Help. Any one else have this issue?  Should I have first installed the Lion OS X first and then restored from the Time Machine backup?
Also, wondering if all my programs (2011 ILife & IWork and Microsoft Office) will be reinstalled with the back up?  (I can't find my installation disks for ILife and IWork :-()

Time machine is easy to set up and theoreticaly recover from. There have been reports of problems when a different disk or computer is used.

For future reference you may wish to learn about and use cloning of the HDD. I use both CCC and SD to do this and consider it to be the most reliable way to back up and recover.

  • MacBook Pro won't restart after OS update

Was prompted last night to do an OS Software update. I was running 10.8.3. I started the update and had to run out. When I returned, the screen said i needed to restart my computer to install the updates. I did, and now I can't restart/reboot past the Apple Logo and progress bar which gets to about 1/6th in progress. The computer just shuts down?? Need help please. Thanks!

  • My mid year 2009 macbook pro won't turn on completely...

My mid year 2009 macbook pro froze while safari was open, I could not force quit, and I lost my trackpad control, so I turned it off. Now, when turned on, the screen comes on but the computer doesn't open completely, then it times out and turns off. What now?

    Hi Melophage,
Thanks! for replying to my plight!
Nope, Safe mode didn't work...We tried everything in the manual, starting w/ Safe mode, on to resetting the PRAM and also used the utility disc that came w/ the laptop, to repair the disc...at which point we got into a continual error 19 loop, but the read out stated that the hard drive was OK..? Now we can't eject the disc...I guess we are headed to the Apple Store for an estimate for repair.  Ouch!
Is there a way to eject the disc right now?

  • MacBook Pro won't restart after Mavericks update

I recently installed the new Mavericks update  on my MacBook Pro and after downloading Pages, Keynote etc. I had to restart. When I try to restart however, the Apple logo appears with the progress bar but as soon as the bar is full it switches off.

    Hello SerenAlyx
Check out the articles below to go over troubleshooting the issue of the grey bar when you are starting up your Mac. It will go over starting up in Safe mode as well as booting to your Recovery Disk to maybe reinstall OS X Mavericks.

  • Macbook pro won't restart

    Hi...
    Ok here's my problem:
The Firefox and BitTorrent applications are not responding, I was gonna try 'Force quit' but the computer doesn't seem to recognize that the applications are not responding. So when I secondary click on the icons in the dock there is only the 'Quit' option and no 'Force quit' option. The 'Quit' option doesn't work (not anything else either).
Then when i downloaded some software updates yesterday the computer needed to restart, but when i clicked the 'Restart' option a window saying that the computer couldn't restart because Firefox wouldn't quit popped up...
I tried uninstalling the applications but that didn't work since they are running...
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks in advanse, Marcus

    Run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.
Find the processes that won't quit, select them, hit the force quit button. It should kill them without hesitation.

  • MacBook Pro won't restart properly after restore

I recently needed to do a restore on my MacBook Pro 15" (2008).  My computer indicated that the restore was successful and to restart.  When I did, I get a screen with what looks to be some type of code in the upper left and a box in the middle that tells me that I need to restart and to hold the power button down until the computer shuts down.  I've done this numerous times; removed all external drives, ejected the back-up cd, taken out the battery, did a safe boot, did a boot holding down option, command P & R but nothing.  Any other solutions to get this to restart properly?  Thanks!!

    Those are kernel panics.
Did you do a full restore from Time Machine backups?
If so, see #E8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting
    If not, please clarify.

  • Macbook Pro won't eject cd completely

When trying to eject a cd on my Macbook Pro I clearly hear the eject mechanism working as it should. But somehow the cd never comes out. Instead the drive acts as if a cd was just inserted and starts reading the disc.
I've tried various commands in Terminal, rebooting the computer while pressing the mousepad and even tilting the MBP in various directions while ejecting - all with similar results.
I'm getting pretty desperate. Suggestions anyone?

My MBP just started doing this yesterday, I was able to eject the disc by holding my MBP upside down i scheduled an appt for later today to have my drive replaced

  • MacBook Pro won't restart after installing Lion

I have a late 2010 model MacBook Pro that I upgraded to Lion about a year ago.  Ever since, I have not been able to "re-start" my computer and have to manually switch the computer off.  Because of this, I cannot install firmware updates.  Do I need to revert back to Snow Leopard or is there another way to fix this issue?
    Thanks.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
