Macbook Pro won't restart while updating 10.6.0 - 10.6.8

Hello all,
I'm having trouble updating my Macbook Pro 13 inch from 2009.
Yesterday I turned my Macbook Pro on for the first time in 2 years and I want to bring some life in it.
It still had the version 10.5.8 which I updated with a usb to 10.6.
Now I want to update my OS X version from 10.6.0 to 10.6.8. I've downloaded the files by clicking on ''software update'' through ''about my mac''.
It now asks for a reboot, so it will install the updates. However, the macbook won't restart.
I click on restart and all it does is show very short a blue screen and then I see my background with only my mouse cursor which I can still move around. All of the applications and toolbars are gone and I can wait an hour and it will still be in the same position. So I have to force the shutdown by holding the power button... And when I turn it back on, it didn't install anything.
Can someone please help me out?
Kind regards!

Manually DL and install the 10.6.8 COMBO update.

CD will not eject and MacBook Pro won't restart.

Do a SMC reset, that hopefully should get you booting and while booting, hold the option/alt and trackpad button down at the same time. Once a row of icons appears and if the disk hasn't ejected via the trackpad method, then press the eject key on the keyboard until it does.
Click the arrow to boot up OS X.

If this doesn't work, then take the machine in for service.

  • Macbook Pro won't startup after Update

I guess everyone has been having problems around here. But I really have no clue what to do. I did not even know there was un update until I restarted. After I did it now my macbook pro won't start up. It makes that chime noise at the beginning and then it shows the apple and the spinning thing below it and I left it for 2 hours and came back and nothing had changed.
It my computer broken? Did I do something wrong? Have I lost all my stuff? Please help!

Yeah, I have had the exact same problem. it happen last friday. Also, i'm not sure if this is related or not but right before the update the computer for no reason in the middle of doing stuff it would tell me to force shut down by holding down the power button. not sure what to do. If i ship it out it will be about a 2 weeks before i get it back and if I take it in, they can't put it on the bench for about 5 days. its very frustrating and apple needs to figure something out for service.

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep after updating to 10.4.11

    Hi,
I just updated to 10.4.11 reluctantly from 10.4.9 as whenever I do update I always have issues...I basically just went to software update last week and updated to everything I could. I've just been reading the forums and noted that updating is not always that easy...
Well basically my computer won't sleep if the lid is left open, this is IMMENSELY annoying since I often leave my desk to work on drawings, and I don't want energy being wasted like it is at the minute. Call me picky but I just want my computer to work.
I've reseted the PRAM, (option, alt, p and r), closed all applications, etc, but no luck...
Its a 2.2ghz MacBook pro, 2GB. Thank you in advance
    Neal

The important thing for the future imho, is to always Repair Permissions before & after any update... seems to ward off most of these problems. Of course that is only good if the disk is Verified once in awhile.
Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later to verify or repair disks...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
In fact I'd start with those 2 now, if that doesn't help you may need to reapply some updates by getting them directly from apple>downloads.

  • Macbook pro won't restart after time machine install on new hard drive

I installed a new 500 GB HD on my 13-inch mid 2010 Macbook Pro (since the original crashed).  I successfully connected to the Disk Utility via the internet connection and started recovery from a recent Time Machine backup....but, the computer will not restart.  It's been stuck in the grey screen with the Apple logo and rotating status bar all night.  I shut it down and restarted, but it won't go past the grey screen state.  I can't find any answers on the Support Page.  Help. Any one else have this issue?  Should I have first installed the Lion OS X first and then restored from the Time Machine backup?
Also, wondering if all my programs (2011 ILife & IWork and Microsoft Office) will be reinstalled with the back up?  (I can't find my installation disks for ILife and IWork :-()

Time machine is easy to set up and theoreticaly recover from. There have been reports of problems when a different disk or computer is used.
    https://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?peopleEnabled=true&userID=&containerTy pe=&container=&spotlight=true&q=time+machine
For future reference you may wish to learn about and use cloning of the HDD. I use both CCC and SD to do this and consider it to be the most reliable way to back up and recover.

  • MacBook Pro won't restart after installing Lion

I have a late 2010 model MacBook Pro that I upgraded to Lion about a year ago.  Ever since, I have not been able to "re-start" my computer and have to manually switch the computer off.  Because of this, I cannot install firmware updates.  Do I need to revert back to Snow Leopard or is there another way to fix this issue?
    Thanks.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • MacBook pro won't start after update

Help my MacBook pro was doing an update when it went to restart it never came back on and seems to be stuck somewhere between sleep and on there is no lights but a faint white light on the case open button.

OK, I ran the latest update and my computer would not restart no matter what I tried. So I restored from a backup and everything was fine. Now I just did the OS update again and the SAME thing happened. Only this is a different hard drive.
There is definitely something screwy with this latest OS update and, at the very least, my model of Macbook Pro.
    Apple is wrong.
I lost a week's worth of data in the crash.

  • Macbook pro won't boot after update to 10.6.8

    Hi everyone,
Yesterday I bought an used macbook pro (15 inch early 2008). When looking at it, it was in good shape and the previous owner just did a fresh install of snow leopard. I took it home and whas happy with it. In the first two hours of using it, everything was fine. After installing the update to 10.6.8 my macbook needed to be shut down.. After shutting down it started up again but the screen stayed black. I had no idea why. So I rebooted it by pressing the power button. The same problem remained, it seemed to start up (I could hear the harddrive and fan) but it didn't boot into Mac Os. After a couple of attempts, it now shutsdown immediatly after pressing the powerbutton (3 seconds after). No chime or nothing.
At first I thought this would only be a software problem, because the problem started immediatly after updating. So I put in my snow leopard dvd to boot into that, but I can't even get it to boot into the install dvd. Because it shuts down immediatly after pressing the power button. Then I started suspecting an hardware failure, which would be a very big coincidence to show up immediatly after booting up. These are the things I have tried so far, to no avail:
    - Plugging of the power cord and removing the battery, then pressing and holding the powerbutton for at least 5 sec
    - Holding the option, command, P and R keys during boot.
    - Replacing the memory
    - Replacing the hard drive
    - Unplugging the super drive
    - Starting up holding the d key
At a certain point I was hoping that It would be an harddrive or memory problem. I replaced both with examples I know for sure they are working. But still the same problem; macbook shuts down  almostimmedialty after pressing the power button.
There is no warrany anymore, and technical support would cost me 49 euros per incident.. to probably hear that the macbook is beyond repair. I feel i have just thrown away 300 euro's for an nightmare experience. Does anybody now anything to try, i'm really desperate here

After installing the update to 10.6.8
    What update was that?
So I put in my snow leopard dvd to boot into that, but I can't even get it to boot into the install dvd.
Did the previous owner also give you the discs that originally came with the computer?  Those are what you need to troubleshoot with.  You also need disc 1 to run the Apple Hardware Test.
There is no warrany anymore, and technical support would cost me 49 euros per incident..
Apple Store and AASP diagnostic testings are free.  Suggest that you take full advantage of it.  This way you can find out exactly what is wrong with your computer.  Post back here with the diagnosis and someone will post DIY repair sites.
