MacBook Pro won't sleep when closed

So yesterday I closed the computer at the office and came home with it like normal and this morning the battery was dead which was unusual.
I plugged in and started up, no big deal.
Then I finished just now and shut the computer and noticed that the apple and the screen stayed lit. I can't find the place in preferences to tell it to shut down when closing the screen...
Any help would be appreciated

I have the similar problem with my mac book pro 17" after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.7 and installing Safari 4 - when I close it, it goes down in the sleeping mode, but only once. When I open it and whant to close it for the second time, it doesn´t - it´s freezing. Also, if I do it manually thrue the menue, it ist the same. It is freezing and the coursor is gone and only thing I can do then is to turn it off and start again. After that the same play start again - standby works only once. Any help proposal? MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reboot of the machine solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs. When I close the lid and listen carefully, I can hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so.
This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

MacBook Pro won't sleep when lid is closed and battery lights won't work?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 15" and ever since I got it, the battery indicator lights wouldn't light up (not that big of a deal) and the computer wouldn't sleep when I closed the lid.
I've reset the NVRAM/PRAM, the SMC and verified/repaired my hard disk as needed. But the computer still won't sleep when I close the lid (regardless if the machine is plugged into a charger or not). Is there a known fix for this problem? I've been searching through the forums and troubleshooting from advice that other people have suggested, but nothing seems to be working. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Macbook Pro won't sleep when lid shuts or hit sleep

Hey Everyone,
So after the latest update my Macbook pro no longer immediately sleeps after shutting the lid. It also won't sleep when 'sleep' is hit in the apple menu. It's actually really annoying as I need it for security.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Macbook Pro won't sleep when lid open

My 2011 Macbook Pro won't go to sleep if I leave the lid open. I have checked System Preferences>Energy Saver and the display/computer sleep is set to 10 min for both Battery and Power Adapter settings. Even if I close all the applications down, my computer will still not go to sleep. The battery just gets completely drained if I forget to close the lid. Help?

MacBook Pro won't sleep when shut

I body slammed my computer and cracked the screen. I bought a new, 3rd-party screen and had a friend install it. Now when I close the lid it won't fall asleep, and I must select sleep from the menu. Also, when it is asleep, the heartbeat is dimmer than usual. Tried resetting SMC, no luck.

I'd guess:
a) The magnetic sensor was left out or not aligned properly so it's not getting the 'lid closed' trigger
b) The lamp was replaced out of alignment so isn't directly in position to glow correctly

MacBook Pro won't sleep or shutdown (intermittent problem)

Every so often my MacBook Pro won't sleep or shut down. I can't find any rhyme or reason to it.
I notice the problem when I close lid, and it doesn't go to sleep. I then hit apple menu:sleep, and it does nothing. I hit shutdown, and OS shuts down, but gets stuck at blue screen with spinning circle indefinitely. Have to hold power button for 5 seconds to finally shut down. Startup is then slow, but doesn't give me an error message indicating improper shutdown or failure.
Most of the time it sleeps fine and shuts down fine.
Other posts seemed to have the problem more reliably, and the fix had to do with startup items. Mine is intermittent, and the only items in my startup folder are Norton Antivirus and Parallels.

I am also experiencing the exact same problem you are describing. Completely random when the machine will not sleep or shutdown, although it seems to occur more often when I've had the machine running for a few days, moving between home and office locations.
I have VMWare Fusion and Office 2004 installed. No iStatPro. I'm wondering could it be related to the kernel extensions that VMWare and Parallels install? Is anybody experiencing the non-shutting-down problem who doesn't have either VMWare or Parallels installed?

☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

MacBook Pro goes to sleep when copying files from attached drives

I have noticed that since installing Yosemite my MacBook Pro goes to sleep when it is in the middle of copying a large number of files. When I wake it up the copying continues.
I have also noticed that when I am watching videos from my shared iTunes library on an Apple TV the video will stop after about 15 minutes and the connection to the library is lost because the MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. When woken up then access to the library is restored but I need to reselect the movie and then resume.
I have changed the power saving options to do not let drives sleep when idle and do not sleep laptop.
Anyone else have any experience of this or better still a fix.

I have just found that if I turn off the display sleep in the power settings then the problem is resolved. It means though that the screen on my MacBook Pro is on all the time albeit with a screen saver.

The only way it turned on was by removing the charger from the Macbook Pro. This only happene one time but still wondering what is going on with this battery.

You might want to try using another charger in case the charger is faulty. If that doesn't help, take the MacBook Pro and charger to an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians test the system to see where the fault is.

Macbook Pro won't sleep

I have this setup: a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, an external 27" cinema display, a bluetooth apple keyboard and a bluetooth magic mouse.
The MacBook Pro runs with the lid closed.
It looks like the computer won't sleep anymore. It stays on for days when not using it. In my settings I have set I want the computer to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity.
I prefer to switch off the keyboard and mouse when I'm away from my computer, so I can't use the Apple menu or shortcuts to make the computer sleep.
Any idea?

i am pretty sure this is because you have it connected to an external display. i am not sure if there is a workaround for this.

MacBook Pro Won't sleep sometimes

Soon after starting my MacBook Pro (2010 model) it will be able to sleep. However, after some time, it will being able to sleep. It won't sleep when I close the lid, or when I choose sleep out of the Apple menu. I've tried quitting all applications, the system won't wake from incoming network connections, and I haven't changed anything more than getting a new external hard drive recently.
I've also tried checking the console for issues, but couldn't really find anything (although I'm not certain what I'm looking for) and resetting the pram. I'm pretty certain the problem is somehow software related, but I'm not sure.

Try a SMC reset. It governs such things.
