MacBook Pro won't stay awake with external display AND power connected

I've been using my MacBook Pro with an external 23" Apple display for several months, always with the lid closed and with no problems. Suddenly, I can no longer keep the MacBook awake when its lid is closed. *The AC power IS connected.* I plug in the display, close the lid, wake the system with my external keyboard, but then it will quickly go to sleep again after a few seconds. No matter what I've tried I get the same behavior.
Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not, I installed the Leopard graphics update a few weeks ago. Could this be a cause?

Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

my labeled files on my macbook pro won't stay colored

Ok, in theory you cannot lock the hard drive, so, run Disk Utlities, First Aid, Repair Hard Drive again.  It should come back with a message that all is OK.  Then run Repair Permissions.  That often returns a lot of messages that are not actually problems, just grumbling by the system.
Then try a normal restart by clicking the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart.  If you restart normally all is fine.
If not, then restart on the recovery HD again and try an Install Mac OS X and see if that succeeds this time.

  • MacBook Pro frozen on startup screen with progress bar and then it turns off

    Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 15" of early 2012 with a i5 Intel, 4GB of RAM  and a  500 GB HD.
I was installing the new suit of Adobe, when suddenly my Mac got frozen, vertical coloured lines appeared and the image on screen went distorted. I had to reboot the Mac by holding the power button until the screen turned off and when I turned it on, the lines appeared again and it itself automatically rebooted. Then the screen (now with no vertical lines) got frozen on the startup grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel for hours with no response.
I tried to follow the steps of the official mac forums like verifying the HD with CMD+R and then Disk Utility, it says everything's fine; the same happens with CMD+S, no errors. I reinstalled Mavericks with the same CMD+R. I already reset the PRAM, SMC  and performed a Safe Boot staring up in Single user mode and Verbose Mode and nothing, the same startup screen. I made too thins thing of holding shift until the progress bar appeared.  Three days later (Today) I repeated the steps again and finally the verbose mode. Now, when I turn it on, the startup screen appears again (Apple Log and spinning wheel) with a progress bar. When it completes, the Mac turn itself off.
if you can help me, please. I don't know what else to do. The last thing is technical service.

  • Macbook Pro won't start up - Apple logo displays, but NO spinning gear, fans full speed

    Hi there,
Not sure what could be causing this - when I start up my Macbook Pro, I get the grey screen, the chime, and the apple logo - but NO spinning gear appears, and after a little while the fans go to full speed.  it hangs like this forever.
I recently installed a new 128 GB SSD, which seemed to be working great for awhile, but now I'm having this issue.  FYI I also have an OptiBay with a 500GB hard drive in it, but it's not the startup drive, it's only used for media storage.
Any insight would be helpful, thanks!

    Hi S,
    Try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Boot from install disc (insert disc> restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > select Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” (good) or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified," run Repair Disk > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

  • Macbook pro won't shut down, restart or logout and finder cannot open

I installed an update and restarted my Macbook Pro. After it restarted, I opened iTunes and it lagged everything so I couldn't doing anything for like 2 hours. Then finally I was able to close iTunes through command-option-esc. And everytime I open iTunes it just continues to lag again and so I would have to keep doing command-option-esc. I thought a way to fix this was to restart my Macbook Pro again, but this time it wouldn't restart. It would close everything, remove everything that was on desktop, and only the Dock would just remain. I've also tired shutting it down and logging out, but the same thing would happen. Everything on the Dock would open except for Finder. Don't know about iTunes though. I don't want to open that just in case it lags my Macbbok Pro again.
So can anyone help me? Give me any advice on how to fix this problem, without losing all of my files?

The advice depends upon which OS you are running. Well the advice is the same the procedure is different.

  • My MacBook pro won't click even with an external mouse... What do I do?

On my MacBook pro I can move the mouse pointer around with the trackpad, but I can't click or tap to click. The same is true even with an external usb mouse. Can move but no click.

The question is, what model macbook do you have, year, and OS.
Some signifigant OS upgrades from older machines have encountered the no-click occurance that you mention.
Further information is required on your model and OS you both CAME from and are currently ON.

  • Outfitting 13" MacBook Pro to Use at Desk with External Monitor

Hello, I have decided to throw out my 2007 Dell Dimension laptop and go with a 13" MacBook Pro. I would like to use the new laptop both at my desk, connected to an external keyboard and possibly mouse, plus an external monitor, and at times just as a simple laptop outside the office.  I heard that you can configure it so that there would be an extended desktop, consisting of the MacBook Pro's screen plus the external monitor.
I am looking to compile a list of hardware accessories I would need to do this and for recommendations about the best hardware to get.  (I suppose that the most important piece of hardware would be the monitor itself.)  (I am assuming that everything would be plug and play and that no additional software would be necessary)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    many thanks

    Steve
    Do you really need 2560 x 1600?
Your MBP will deal with up to 1920 x 1200 which is pretty good on an external (say 23" monitor)
So to set up - DVI out to your monitor. Mains power in to the MBP and you can have it screen off while you work away. With no power adapter both screens will be on.
Go to System Prefs / Displays to set up your res and screen layout. You can have mirrored or extended.
Your MBP will get hot and its best left with the lid open for heat to get out. Open the lid once its woken from sleep. Startup will be with screen open. Then put MBP to sleep - close lid - wake up from the keyboard.
    Hope thats what you needed!

    Hi Bizzlewood,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know it can be both frustrating and concerning when your computer doesn’t seem to wake from sleep. There may be a few different troubleshooting steps I would suggest in this situation. Please refer to the attached article for troubleshooting information.
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
Your computer cannot wake from sleep
Make sure your computer isn't powered off by pressing the power key for one second.
If you're using an external display, make sure your display is not powered off or unplugged.
If you are using a Mac notebook:
Make sure the computer's battery is charged. Try connecting the power adapter to the computer, then press the power button for one second to see if the computer powers on.
Make sure the AC power cord is connected securely to the power outlet, and that the outlet it is working correctly. Confirm the power adapter or cable is attached firmly.
If your computer is plugged into a power strip, make sure the power strip is not turned off. Check to make sure other items connected to the power strip are receiving power.
Confirm the right power adapter is connected on Mac notebook computers. If a lower wattage power adapter is used than the one that came with your Mac, it may not provide enough power to charge the battery while the computer is powered on. Make sure there is no debris in the MagSafe port that might prevent charging. When your MagSafe cable is connected properly, you should see a green or orange light on the connector.
If the issue is still not resolved after verifying the above information, please be sure to follow the steps listed at the bottom of the article in the Additional troubleshooting section.
    Cheers,
    Joe

  • Calendar on my MacBook Pro won't sync events with my iOS devices via iCloud.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (non-retina) running OS X Mountain Lion, and an iPad 3 and iPhone 4S running iOS 6.1.3.
I recently created some events in Calendar on my Mac, and later wanted to edit them on my iPad.
The event didn't show up on my iPad, so I tried my iPhone.
Neither worked out, and I assumed it was my Internet connection.
Later, my iOS devices still wouldn't get the events from my MacBook.
I made sure all my devices were logged into iCloud with the same account and the calendar synchronization was enabled.
    Still nothing worked!
How can I get my events to sync?

Be sure that the calendar on the mac is in the "icloud" group and not "on my mac".  Calendars "on my mac" do not sync with icloud.

  • Macbook Pro won't stay connected to my pc based netowrk

I am new to mac. I have a PC network and if I reboot my macbook pro (early 2011) it will connect fine to all the computers but after a certain amount of time it will disconnect from them and won't be able to see the computers. My mac is still able to connect to the internet just fine without any issues. Any suggestions?

iTunes would open, and it would say error 9, or error 1611, I do apologize for missing that bit, looking up the error, it seems usb related, but all my other USB devices and mp3s work fine on my USB hubs, no matter which I use for the ipod, it does it.
Edit: forgot to mention that it ONLY saw it in recovery mode, and everytime I would try to restore it would give those same errors, had to restore it on my fiances PC this morning.
